    I've never been a fan of the Gmail appearance, but do like the simplicity of Inbox. For some reason, it just looks nicer to me. Since I don't receive as many emails as some of you, Inbox will probably work just fine for me, at least on my Android phone. Good job Steve!

    Thanks for the review Steve... I've been using Inbox for a few weeks now & I love it. Definitely helped clear out the clutter, & I really like the Google Now style reminder feature. The most impressive thing to me was how it helped clean up the wife's inbox, she's they type that's always afraid to delete & file away. Inbox has completely solved that problem for her.
    Keep up the good work sir...

    Things make perfect sense when you describe them. I had put this new 'inbox' away in my mind, thinking I had to make a choice and didn't want to...afraid somehow I'd miss something. Now I realize I don't have to. Thank you for making this much clearer. I will play with both, as I must admit I'm attracted to the new clean interface and pinning important emails to the top!! I will now look at many of your other videos.

    Three questions...InBox is all right but I need the following 3 things. By the way, I love all your videos - so helpful. THANKS!!!!
    1) How do you use the groups you set up in GMail to send an email in InBox
    2) Is there a way to make a sub Label in InBox? For example if you have a label in Gmail you might have had sub labels to separate the years - doesn't seem you can do this in Inbox.
    3) One feature in Gmail I used often is making an email an Event? How can you do this in InBox
    4) sorry one last question - it doesn't' seem like you can drag and drop emails into the labels (Bundles) like you could in Gmail, any suggestions?

  • @puffdong
    @puffdong 10 лет назад +2

    You can create your own bundle within the sidebar, and make it so it even adds an email automatically when it has a specific subject! I use that all the time, it's super handy!

    • @JaiSequoia

      I agree Simon. 2 days ago I had to dump using Mac mail on my desktop because I changed my Gmail password and all of a sudden Mail didn't know how to handle the 2 part verification I had created a while ago. Anyway, I had already been using inbox on my iPhone and my android tablet and I LOVE it. I agree that Gmail interface has lots of customization but it can get confusing to set up. The sidebar bundles is what I use to teach Inbox where to put emails so if I feel overwhelmed with all the emails in the main inbox I can quiet all that but clicking on a bundle and reminding myself of the conversation and threads. I also LOVE the reminders and pinning ability! Integrating to do with my email is perfect for me as a busy graphic designer. This is also another reason why I like the white interface with colourful avatars or pictures. @Dottotech I do wish they would add colours to the BUNDLES so that when something that comes in that's in a bundle the icon has a specific colour that I set. That would be helpful to grab my eye.

    Hey Steve, not sure if this was a feature 2 years ago when you recorded this video, but you can setup your labels (from normal Gmail) as bundles in Inbox. There's a bundled and unbundled section. If you move the labels to your bundled section, like - for example - the paypal ones...you can set those up so that they show up immediately, once a day, or once a week.
    I have been using Inbox for a little while now at work, and I really wouldn't go back to Gmail. I love the ability to use Zero Inbox methodology in Inbox (with the snooze feature). Inbox has been a real game changer for me!
    Love your channel. Keep up the great work!

    Thanks for the overview! This might be too little too late for those working on bailing on email! For snooze to be useful, items should *stay* in your inbox w dates in the future - the inbox has the potential to be a digital tickler IMHO. This said, Evernote is still my tickler solution as it is more effective at overall aggregation of just about anything!

    I am with Tyler below - I am admittedly one of those people who are...OK NEUROTIC about having as little as possible in my inbox at all times! :-) To that end, I love the features such as snooze and/or pinning for those items that I will get to in the next few hours or days. Stuff that does not go to Trello as an action item not tied to a project. I have tried Gmail from time to time but have previously stuck with Outlook as a desktop app (for last 20+ years!). However, I believe Inbox is something that will enable to finally use a web-based email client, that also integrates with the rest of my Gsuite apps. So I get the clean look and functionality of Inbox, with the added benefit that web-based clients offer, such as not having to switch back and forth with a desktop app and my browser - it's all right there! Steve, looking at your Gmail inbox it is clear that you and I are from two different planets when it comes to what you want or needs from an email client! As Tyler notes below, "bundling" would give you essentially the same prioritization scheme as your labels...but you are clearly wed to the "busyness" of the Gmail look and feel - good for you! ;-)

    Great review Steve, as always. I've tried Inbox for just over one week now but find myself automatically opening my Gmail app on the phone more often than not, rather than the Inbox app. Maybe it's just a question of me reverting to Gmail as it's what I'm used to and therefore easier in a hurry. I'm going to try and make myself use the Inbox app to see if it starts getting any easier with familiarity. It does seem to negate the need to use Gmail+Boomerang though so I guess that's a bit simpler.

    Got it, its nice but i needed it for my work email (more use for it there), unfortunately my school central IT don't support it yet. but it is nice and clean, i like the snooze, pin features.
    Also to help with your important emails such as your crowd funding stuff, you can create a custom group (like update purchases and promos) and all the emails form that go there, making it easy to just respond to that group. hope that helps

    Excellent Review/Introduction to IBG, thanks. After a week using inbox, I decided to commit to it and deleted about 500 filters from my Gmail in order to transition to the new way of doing things using Inbox. After 2 weeks, I love it on both the mobile and desktop platforms.... That Said: Anyone who has taken the effort that you appear to have to make Gmail work for you will probably have difficulty stepping away from Gmail on the desktop platform. I look forward to Inbox gaining momentum so that they can add the other browsers to the mix and get some more detail in some of the features. Subscribed to your channel, I like you M.O.

    I'm on the fence too.
    On the Mac desktop, in Chrome, both Gmail and Inbox are pinned but I use Inbox more. I have highly customized Gmail in terms of turning off all categories except Primary, extensively using filters and associated labels, multiple Inboxes Labs feature so I feel I have less use for the features in Inbox.
    The "tasking" like feature "pinning" is interesting and might crimp the likes of Todoist and RTM
    So use it more in the tablet? Dunno.
    Early days so we'll see.

    People think google inbox is replacing gmail. Which is not true, because they work together. I feel people in general got used to gmail. They enjoy making a theme and the color coated tabs. They just got used to it and can't let go of the past. If I know google inbox is doing the work for me that is a plus for me.
    They should have called it gbox! Inbox sounds kind of dull. But I enjoy inbox over gmail. I move back and forth with gmail. It is the best application I have seen,

    Thank you for the helpful video. I feel same as you about "Inbox", there is something about the interface that screams chaos. But I felt the same way when linear programming went modular, so perhaps it's a brain thing that's not shared by everyone. Lol

  • @MikaelMagnuson

    I use mailbox by drop box, and the one feature it has that I haven't seen yet in Google's interfaces is an easy way to delete from the inbox view. I get several emails a day that sometimes hold relevant information for me but often don't. With mailbox I can just swipe short to the right for archiving (just like Google's inbox) or swipe long to the right to delete. I know that Gmail 's whole thing is to have enough space so that you don't have to delete any emails ever, but I prefer to delete some and this feature just hasn't been supported enough in their mobile interfaces.

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  10 лет назад +3

      Umm, on my desktop, I do it easy with the checkbox. As soon as I check an email subject line, I see a garbage can.
      Then there is multi-select, bulk delete and they're gone!

    • @MikaelMagnuson
      @MikaelMagnuson 10 лет назад

      John Angelico
      Yes, desktop is just as easy as any other interface. But on the mobile interface, you actually have to open the email to delete it, which is annoying.

    • @MikaelMagnuson
      @MikaelMagnuson 10 лет назад

      John Angelico right. If you open the email, you have those three options. The point is, without opening you can only swipe to archive. With mailbox you can swipe to delete. Perhaps I didn't explain that very well originally.

    I've been using Inbox for a few weeks now with my personal mail and Gmail with Google APPs. I think we are of the same mind - I like Inbox, but I don't necessarily "like-like it".
    Point in favor: you can speed through incoming mail really fast.
    Point against: Tags. I gotta have my tags.
    I've come to consider that maybe we have a generational divide here where Inbox might appeal more to younger generations, who are less dependent on mail and more so on social media, and Gmail to the older generations, who rely more on mail and are productivity driven.
    Inbox is new, fast and fresh. Gmail starts to look old, heavy and outdated. However, being part of the older generation, I kind of prefer that old look that Gmail has, mainly because of the control I have over mail; whereas it is not the case over on Inbox. Gmail is more of working with the cogs and inner workings of mail management and Inbox seems to be more of skimming the surface and getting things out of the way.
    For now Inbox doesn't work with Google APPs accounts, but I'm not too sure I would use it for that account because it's the where most of my productivity comes out of. I really like the new look of Inbox but I also want to keep the control Gmail offers.

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  10 лет назад

      Eduardo Carrillo This new clean look would seem to be the direction many apps are going, after looking at Inbox for a few minutes Gmail does look a bit tired.

    Hi Steve, great videos! I love Inbox I've been using it since it came out and rarely use the Gmail interface anymore but I didn't have much of a system set up anyway. I've been using it as my primary task manager as well because it integrates into Google now which I often use to set reminders because it's so easily accessible from the android desktop without having to launch an app and those reminders show up in Inbox. What I would love to see with Inbox is the ability to group tasks together to make some kind of a project but it's not there at this point so for that I use Google Keep for list management which I know is not the best way to do it (I'm certainly not a task power user) but I like it because reminders set in Google Keep also show up in Google Now so I can see my reminders (Inbox and Keep) in one place. In case you're wondering Keep does not integrate with Inbox at least not yet. So I'm excited to see where Google takes this because it's certainly not a perfect system the way I use it but it's great for me because it's simple and it works. I hope this little tidbit of information helps somebody. Cheers!

    Nice informative video, thank you. I have been using this app for a little bit now. First impression was about the aesthetics. Very clean and elegant. How it functions as a "daily driver" for an email client? Meh. For some reason it will not let you "empty trash". I cannot not select "all". I don't see the relevance of the "done" feature. When I am done reading an email I put it in the trash. The app now is bloated with all the "done" emails and now I have to put it in the trash. From there you cannot empty the trash.
    Looks like it needs more work.

    Hi Steve,
    I have just re-visited your first look at Google Inbox.
    Have you done a more in-depth follow up as yet?
    I have given it a try, but I would like a bit more metadata for each email (date, time) and I would like to add categories for classifying incoming mail before I move away from the "old" Gmail client interface.

    Funnily enough, I prefer Inbox on desktop over mobile. Have had it since day 1 and it's grown on me. I'd say it's more for the standard user than power user. Over the years I setup gmail to essentially do the same thing but obviously not quite as attractive. I'm an inbox zero kind of person so it doesn't help me too much but less clicks to delete junk I suppose.
    I look forward to future iterations.
    After using it for a while, I simply can't go back to gmail on the desktop.

    I'm with you that it doesn't quite make you want to drop everything and switch. I've used it on and off for a week or so and I'm not seeing anything to force me to switch full time. It might be that I'm actually in the middle of making a concerted effort to not use email as a to do list. So Todoist is taking the place of this type of interface. I will have to say I do like it a bit better on my Android device as the simpler interface is useful there. I'll continue to try it out but for the moment I'll probably stick with Gmail.

    Another brilliant review by dottotech, thanks Steve! I have been using Google Inbox for a few weeks with both personal email and Google Apps and here's my 2 cents.
    There are a couple of things that Inbox doesn't do. It doesn't have signatures, and I really miss the ability to attach images with copy and paste (ctrl+v) right in message.
    I'm also hoping they will integrate the "save attachments directly to Drive" feature that Gmail has and also the Hellosign integration which I recently discovered (requires hellosign chrome extension), that let's you esign a document right in message with a pop-up window (and automatically reattaches to the same message when signing is complete)!
    It took me a little while to get used to the visual layout of Inbox (felt like I couldn't skim the page and visualize what needed attention) but I like the threading of the messages and the single click to expand/close messages. It's easy to scroll up or down after reading a message without having to click back to the Gmail inbox list or be restricted to clicking through the emails one at a time, forward or back.

      Rick Wiebe Great summary Rick! so do you pop in and out of the gmail client when you need to use HelloSign?

    • @RickWiebe911
      @RickWiebe911 10 лет назад +1

      dottotech Yes, I pop in to the gmail client to use Hellosign, attach images "in line" (i.e. screen clippings, etc), and when I need to send an email through one of my Google Apps accounts that I feel requires a pre-formatted signature. I see some other people are using Breevy or another text expander for attaching signatures but I haven't gotten around to setting that up. I have my fingers crossed that Google will add that feature to Inbox soon!

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  10 лет назад

      Rick Wiebe Thanks!
      I expect signatures will be there, if not from Google then a 3rd party like Tzvika Avnery's WiseStamp will jump in and fill the void!

    Mmm... I tried Inbox on my Sony Xperia Z2 for some days and I just uninstalled it and went back to Gmail. Somehow I liked the idea of Inbox, but I don't like how easy it is to just have e-mails leave your inbox without knowing exactly where they are. I like the fact that it categorizes your e-mails correctly, but I find the interface more complicated (although the screen looks emptier). I am back to my labeled emails =)

    Hey Steve have your thoughts on Inbox changed over time? I find myself switching back and forth pretty often. I find Inbox saves me time because the decluttering is done for me, and I love the reminders and snooze functions. However, there are functions not yet there which causes me to jump back to Gmail. Initially marking as done didn't do anything to Gmail, I wanted it to archive and thankfully it does now.
    The next missing feature is email groups. Inbox doesn't do it. I think if it does, that may be the last thing and I will really be all in with Inbox, at least for mobile.

    being able to name my own bundles {tabs} as well as set my labels as a bundle has been something i had wanted in gmail. love being able to set reminders and pin them as well as email so they don't get lost. disagree with vardy. i often have email that need to be postponed. now we can set it up to come back at an appropriate date and time. leaves me my boomerangs to specifically send out an email to someone in another time zone so it catches their attention at the right time of day. i don't have to boomerang to myself anymore.

    I'm playing around with inbox. Early days for me - I prefer to see more of my emails in one go - so the gmail view is preferred for me. I also prefer gmails tabs / categories to Inobx's bundles - don't like them at all and find it difficult to really get my head round them - they seem far more cumbersome and longer winded than category tabs.
    One other thing that came out of this is that I looked at other Android email apps/managers and that has been interesting. I am currently playing with 6 different ones, inc inbox, and most have something to offer.
    A few of the others have the snoozing function - which I love. Cloudmagic allows you to send email content to :
    Pocket
    todoist
    evernote
    Trello
    asana
    and others
    I also like bluemail and boxer.
    If anyone is interested I have started a group on facebook for Inbox and similar apps where folk can discuss, share tips etc - Steve hope it's OK to plug it here - if not let me know and I'll remove this bit if I can edit.

    well up to now inbox has not grown on me one bit. I, today, switched on my data and watched emails coming in to inbox - one arrived at the top and then disappeared somewhere (who knows where) so that's one email I have no idea where it is - I wonder how many others I've missed when I haven't looked at the screen.
    One comment someone else made on here baffled me. they stated that they could see al their emails ???
    Errr what ? I have inbox open now, on my LG g2, and I can see the grand total of three and a half emails (maybe they didn't mean see them all at once ..but then nit sure what they did mean)
    I go to gmail on my phone and I see 3 emails 4 categories with a number against them telling me how many new emails
    I open mailwise and I see six and a little bit emails
    in bluemail I see 6 emails
    lastly in cloud magic I see 5 emails
    cloud magic can send email info to a whole host of services inc, quite newly added, wunderlist as well as evernote, pocket, trello et al.
    I'm pretty confident I'll be ditching inbox - it brings nothing of use at all in my opinion.
    I also don't like that a swipe automatically carries out an action. with the others it gives a choice of actions so you know what a swipe is going to do before you do it. Sorry google but I cannot remember what swiping in one direction does compared to the other.
    I much prefer categories to bundles.
