  • The ultimate shootout between Dropbox and Google Drive.
Steve takes on the toughest question of all if you only had to choose one which would you choose!
    Dropbox - db.tt/YoejcTP
    Google Drive - drive.google.com/#my-drive
Both filesharing systems have exceptional value, are easy to use, and have massive user basis. But there are several significant differences. Steve explores those differences and explains what they mean to you.

I Added a note to the video, as Google has dropped the pricing on Drive,
    $1.99f for 100GB, a big drop$9.99 for a TB
Kind of kicks Dropbox to the curb if you are paying!

One thing you don't show... Dropbox allows you to selective sync individual folders throughout your folder tree. Google Drive only allows you to selective sync the top level folders (which syncs all the subfolders below it). So, for example, if your Top Level folder says "Photos" and below that you have Sub-Folders by year (2014, 2013, 2012, etc), in Google Drive you can only share all photos or none. In Dropbox I could select one specific year and have it ignore the others. I like feature in Dropbox that because I want to keep all my photos under the "photos" folder but I only want the 2014 photos on my computer. This is the SOLE reason why I have selected Dropbox. Otherwise, I'd select Google Drive.

Thank you so much for this video. The "which one should I choose" problem is a big one, with all the services and choices today.
Another one I would love to see is a video about Evernote vs MS Onenote. There is a tough choice to. Both is very good, and since I moved to Evernote I still miss some things in Onenote and vice versa.

Dropbox advantage: Videolan for ipad works with both Dropbox and Google Drive. While the latter displays all your videos alphabetically, it is unable to display the folders they sit in. Dropbox does, and beautifully so, I might say.

Great review and as a Free Dropbox user, I nearly signed up for the 1Tb Google Drive account...but...Google Drive (and MS OneDrive for that matter) neglect (so far) to do just one essential thing I need from a cloud storage storage provider that Dropbox actually does: to selectively sync SUBFOLDERS! I'm sure Google & MS will catch up with this feature one day but until then, Dropbox have my money.

    Good review.
To me, they're two different animals. Dropbox is great for backups, iOS integration with other apps, and their public URL can't be beat. I use their iPad client all the time for reviewing documents, giving presentations, and uploading and archiving all my iOS pictures. Dropbox also has iterative backups. This means I can go back to a version I uploaded a month ago and find it.
Google Drive has the best collaboration apps available anywhere.
In my workflow, you need both.

I'm paying for 100GB on GDrive right now, but I'm going to choose Dropbox Pro with 1TB instead. Dropbox is simply more robust than GDrive. When we change proxys or the internet disconnects, the Dropbox client responds much quicker, while the GDrive client stalls. Also, when using auto-upload from my phone, the photos in GDrive end up in Google Photos, but in the desktop I can't find a way to organize them in folders easily. In Dropbox it's really easy. I'm a Picasa / G+ Photos user for many years, but as far as I tried, Dropbox also has some really nice tools for photos and videos.

Nice review of both services. Just some things that I learned from using both:
    1. Google Drive does not have a Linux client as yet but Dropbox does. This may not be an issue for some people but it was a problem for me and I am still waiting for them to add Linux support.
    2. Google Drive allows you to easily revise who can edit, download or view a file after you have shared it.
    3. Google Drive ties in nicely with Gmail allowing you to attach a Drive file to an email.

Steve cleared up exactly what I'm trying to find out. As a real estate agent, I have a bunch of folders on my server filled with info on listings, former listings, prospects, and client information. I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to upload it all to Drive, Dropbox, or Evernote.
Thanks to Steve, I'll use Google Drive as my main storage area with templates for mailmerge and all the rest. Then I'll set up individual acttive listing/ active client folders to share the info I've gathered on an individual or property. I doubt if I'll even need more than the 3 or 4 gig of free storage I've already got with Dropbox, but since I can get 500 K more with everyone I get to sign up to Dropbox and since it is the main way of keeping open communications with customers and clients, I think I'll easily keep ahead of space problems. Especially if I remove the folder when each deal is finished.

I used Dropbox mainly, but switched to Drive a while ago. Two things that Dropbox do better is, each file in Dropbox is backed up. so even if you overwrite or delete. you can get it back through the web. Second is that dropbpx is more widespread and supported in third party applications, it is also has native clients on more places. For example linux.

While Google Drive beats Dropbox on the price. Dropbox far outshines it with respect to syncing speed and the computer resources it uses. If your just using the free account this most likely makes no difference BUT if you have a lot of data to sync then Dropbox is far superior. I needed to sync about 100 Gigs and started with Google Drive. It took forever and Gdrive continuously ran and used about 50$ of my computer resources, so it really slowed down my computer. I switched to Dropbox and moved my files and folders from GDrive to Dropbox and the difference is amazing. Dropbox uses practically no resources and it's syncing speed far outshines GDrive. I suggest you do a search for sync speed and Google Drive and you will find all kinds of people who gave up on Gdrive because of the speed and the effect it had on there computer.

I completely agree with your entire synopsis.I also use both Google Drive and Dropbox but for some reason which I cannot explain, I prefer using Dropbox so that is my main online storage.
The fact that Dropbox also gives free storage for signing onto your account from select mobile devices is also a big win for me cos it greatly extends the free space you have available. Many apps also support Dropbox and not Google Drive so that also adds convenience somewhat ;)

    Hi Steve
After failure of a Seagate GoFlex BackUp Drive & total lack of any kind of support from them I have been looking for free online backup programs simply to backup my documents, photographs & music collection & have already downloaded DropBox & backed up my Documents (63Mb). After finding out that the photographs take up 5Gb & Music collection a further 27Gb, I have been looking for other free backup programs & did download Mega which has 50Gb of storage but could not get it to work. So I was quite pleased to find your most informative U-Tube video comparing Dropbox & Googlebox. I intend to use other programs One Drive (15Gb) & pCloud (10Gb) to back up the music collection after a bit of trimming & splitting files & then thanks to your video Googlebox for the pictures & the cut down versions of Office Products. Thanks again

If I correctly understand what you're saying around 6:10, you say that the more you sync, the more you use out of your quota.
Per my understanding, that does not affect your usage. What you have on the "Google Drive" is what you have, the only difference is whether I see it as a local folder on my hard drive.
For example, say that in my Google Drive I have "Vacation 2013" folder, that I want to make available for offline on my home computer only, and "Invoices" that I want to make available for offline on my office computer, I will sync them accordingly. The fact that I sync some folders with some computers and other folders with other computers does not change the fact that on the "Google Drive" itself all of them are counted as part of my used space.
Correct me if I misunderstood something.

Great comparison on just two of the really great doc share options doing the rounds at the moment. I just recently got a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung throws a lot of support to Evernote with its S Note app which can only sync with Evernote or Samsung's own servers.
I was kinda bummed out by this at first but it has re-introduced me to Evernote again. Personally I find Google Drive to be invincible in this department but Evernote does boast it's own winning features too.

I just downloaded the Google Drive Mac App and you can share directly from your Google Drive folder. Go to your file, highlight, and then two finger click on the track pad. Then go to the Google Drive option and share. No need to go to Web. Currently moving my files from Dropbox to Google Drive!!

I have both, actually I have three, One Drive (Skydrive), Dropbox, and Google Drive. Dropbox will give you more data if you use the online website and click on share more space. I add to at least two computer, two tablets and my phone so I go 100GB for free for a year. Now I got 48GB left for a year. Plus with Dropbox you can share files and folders with others. I save a few digital files with my family that are 2-3GB in size.
