STEPS TO DIAGNOSE A DRZ400 THAT'S OVERHEATING OR LEAKING COOLANT: If you don't have an internal or external leak, you may just have an air bubble in your radiator. Before you go on and try any of the below steps, first try and bleed air out of your system (lookup a RUclips tutorial on it, it's not that hard to do). Also if your bike is overheating but you have no coolant issues, make sure you turn your bike off at stops or add more powerful fans to your radiator. STEPS TO A COOL DRZED: Assuming you are losing coolant and/or overheating still, then: First you need to find the source of the leak. Check #1: Are you losing coolant but not seeing any visible leaks? Then: every time you stop, look under your bike and see if it leaks some coolant/water, or when you get home take off your skid plate and look closer for coolant residue. If you have a leak, then skip to check #3. Check #2: if you're losing coolant but you definitely have no outside leaks, then Check your oil with a flashlight to See if you can see any coolant in your oil. Also check your coolant to see if there's any oil in your coolant. If you see some in one or the other Then this is worst case scenario and you're going to have to take apart the engine or clutch case and replace the head gasket or possibly replace the two o-ring seals in your water pump. (PS coolant comes in blue and green so don't freak out if you see some blue coolant in your green coolant, as long as they're both 50/50 then it should be fine). Check #3: Is the coolant leaking out of a tube, a radiator/ radiator cap), or a hose? Then duh, replace it (Side note, you should replace radiator hoses whenever they get badly cracked, bulged outwards, and/or brittle. Plus radiator hose is coming pretty colors so have fun). Check #4 find your water pump. It's attached to a radiator hose and usually close to or part of your clutch case. On a DRZ, Take off the plastic guard and you should be able to find a small hole towards the bottom front of the water pump. Touch your finger on or around this hole. If you're coolant is leaking from there Then that means one or both of the two o-rings for your water pump need to be replaced. Don't ride your bike until you replace those seals, if both seals fail, then coolant can get into your engine... (side note, in order to replace these seals you got to take off your clutch case in which I would say look up DRZ full tear down on RUclips, there's a playlist that will really help and figuring that out) Check #5 check your coolant thermostat. Sometimes they get old and need replacing Check #6 If it's leaking out of a small tube then check and see if the tube got detached from the overflow reservoir. (Or in my case make sure you have a damn overflow reservoir lol). This took me a couple days to find all this information and source it down to the problem so I hope me taking an hour riding this comment will save you some time. Same exact issue happened to me 2 days ago first time my drz overheated after 9 years of ownership..I was thinking the bubbling sound was the coolant in the radiator got so hot it started boiling (never had any vehicle overheat so that's why I assumed that) I never would've guessed it would be an air bubble
Lots of good stuff in the comments 😉 Also may need to flush radiators and Water wetter or ICE Cool are some great products dropped my running temp 10*+
Another common problem with the DRZ400 which could cause overheating is gasoline in the crankcase. The gasoline will thin out the oil, which will greatly reduce it's ability to reduce friction, thus causing overheating. The vacuum operated petcocks on these bikes are known to fail, allowing gasoline to flow into the carburetor even when the engine is off. It will overflow the float bowl then leak into the cylinder, past the piston rings and into the crankcase. Check your oil dipstick and see if the oil smells like gasoline.
I have a 2018 Suzuki DRZ400sm and my red light comes on every time I’m at a traffic light for more than 45 seconds it will come on. Soon as I take off from the light it turns off.
my exhaust header pipe starts to get hot and smoke about 30 to 40 seconds after starting the bike up. the coolant level is where it should be, the radiator has no visible leak, the temp light on the dash does not come on. has this happened to anyone, and does anyone know of a way to solve the problem
Squirrel Panda they are and they aren't. Meaning, in some cases people use distilled water in their radiators, while others use coolant that's diluted 50/50 with water already. Just a preference
So you put a jug of coolant in your jacket because you made no other provision to carry anything - rack, backpack, soft panniers…and go off like that was a big deal or some fault of the motorcycle. Check with your troop leader. You may earn points toward your next merit badge for that.
Envy YT yeah the issues resolved now! Thanks to trusty mechanics. I'd love to wrench in my bike myself right now but college and having a girlfriend leaves very little free time to do that and I want to have in running well so I can keep up the content. Thanks for all the support and comments man once I get bigger I'll start doing some small giveaways to all the fans that are day one people

theres air in your coolant line from when they opened up your coolant system at the shop
no follow up video ? what was the problem ? and how do check temp gauge is working with a dry run ?
Lots of good stuff in the comments 😉

Holy fuck your right and this isn't only in drz it's any motor my oil smells like petrol and has a burnt smell
This is slightly incorrect. Your carb will stop gas from going in. It's the vaccuum port on the petcock not the actual fuel line.
JooKed the BSR36 carb will not stop gas from getting in. There's no overflow on it.
That happend to my honda back in like 2012 always shut the gas off when you done riding make it a habit
That’s exactly what happen to mine, went to drain the oil nothing but gas
Whats the name of you mechanic and what’s the shop called
Aren't DRZ's Air/Oil Cooled?
no, liquid cooled.
Bill Buck My bad. I must have been thinking of the DR 650
Very very helpful thanks bro
Does there is o ring that is not ring shaped? Then why does it call “o” ring and not just ring?? 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
My ring is 0 shaped)))
An O ring is round and shaped like an O. Otherwise it's just called a seal
I have a 2018 Suzuki DRZ400sm and my red light comes on every time I’m at a traffic light for more than 45 seconds it will come on. Soon as I take off from the light it turns off.
Check your radiator fan
Is the traffic light green or red?
How many miles does your DRZ have on?
Rossouw Removals just cracked 8 thousand

troyduh If it's new it's probably production oils on the header, just let it burn off.
I just bought an 2004 xr 400 that just got serviced and I'm having the exact same problem, any ideas what it is, did I get scammed?
I love me drz too
If it's liquid cooled, than it must have a thermostat.
I dont want anything wrong with mine either
sounds like your (water pump or your thermostat)
otto63 it turned out to be a bubble in my radiator that allowed it to heat up more
whats a bubble ?
A air lock
