Great video! Can you help me out, I have a 2020 Suzuki drz400Sm, do you know where I can buy the whole kit for my oil change ? With all washers orings etc. thanks
Hi Jose.Im not aware of any kit offered that has the parts outlined in the video. But whatever Suzuki Dealer you do business with will likely have an online parts finder page that makes it very easy to get whatever you need .I'm pretty sure the part numbers in the video will match your bike as the motors haven't changed much in a very long time .But still cross reference them with your model year just to be sure. Hope that helps .Good luck and enjoy your machine. Cheers 🍻
Tusk sells a kit complete with oil, washers, filter, and o rings but the washers are not crush washers. I used the tusk washer and no leaks yet but will probably buy crush washers for my next change
Hi Caleb ,thanks very much I truly appreciate your great comment . Regarding the headlight , I know you don't get much opportunity to get a clear look at it throughout the video but what you're seeing is a blank number plate .There is no headlight .This bike is a track only machine .No lights ,signals ,speedo ,horn, reflectors or licence plate . Thanks again for taking the time to watch and leave a kind comment .Cheers
It's common mostly on race bikes .Basically it's a small hole drilled in the cap of the drain bolt to allow a wire to be threaded through it ( after being tightened) and anchored to a secure point on the frame or adjacent bolt .It Gaurantees the bolt can't come loose .
So there are 3 drainage bolts. Which one could i replace with an oil pressure sensor? Best one dor accurate reading should be the main oil drainage bolt in the bottom of the Motor? Right
Well sir I've asked some pro mechanics about your inquiry .The frame drain and the main drain plug won't work well for you , which leaves the small drain plug near the oil filter as a potential spot .These engines don't run with much oil pressure at all with a roller bearing crank. Your sensor will have a very low scale probably less that 5psi max . I don't know anyone that has an oil pressure sensor on their DRZ and it does'nt seem to be a contentious issue in the DRZ community when I look into it . Having said that I'm sure someone out there has installed one successfully .I will keep digging into it for a definitive answer but for now thats all I've got for you . Hope that helps in some small way . If you do find some solid intel please let me know in this thread and I'll make a video about it to help others . Cheers
@@TRyanLearnBikes i researched it my self. the mechanics handbook of dRz suggests the plug near the oli filter as oli pressure point for mechanics. so i would replace this bolt.
@@area4race Ok thats good to know .Thanks for getting back to me and any other interested people .I'm sure it will help someone asking the same question .Cheers
@prominence2826 I recommend replacing the crush washers with every oil chang and the O rings if they get damaged or become hard over time or if the start to show signs of leaking .Hope that helps .Cheers 🥃
Both drain bolts should have new crush washers.Just regular white lithium grease works fine to hold in the O ring on the cover .And Yes I do recommend replacing both O rings .But you don't usually have to unless the old ones are compromised in some way .
Idk about the drain plug for the oil filter, I’ve heard to NEVER touch that and that it’s for testing oil pressure or something like that. Strips very easily so I’ve heard
Well sir you are correct that this access point is used for connecting an oil pressure gauge .To never use it as a convenient drain point for the oil filter housing is an interesting thought .To say it strips out easily is something I have never seen or heard of .Like any nut or bolt ,if you use common sense and have a reasonable mechanical feel I dont think it would be an issue .Thanks for raising the point and taking te time to comment .Cheers
Safety wire is used to secure a bolt in place .The head is drilled to accommodate a thin wire through it and then twisted to the frame or another part of the engine. Typically done on race machines or aircraft or on any critical bolt on any piece of machinery. Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to comment so kindly from Australia. Cheers 🍻
Thanks very much man ,I appreciate the kind words .Yes the DRZs oil change is a little different in some aspects but really its not too much effort once you know the routine .Thanks again Cheers 🍺
Great video, just don't agree on the torque wrench to tighten the drain bolt. to easy for a new rider to over torque and strip the threads. I would recommend a good 3/8 wrench and snug on the drain bolts and check after 100 miles for leaks. Great video!
Hey Stevo ,thanks very much for watching and taking the time to comment .You are certainly not alone with your thoughts about torquing the drain bolt .I made a youtube short specifically about the drain bolt in this video and ,wow did it stike a nerve .Some of the comment threads were quite interesting to say the least. If you get a chance take a look you may find it entertaining .But again I thank you for watching and commenting so kindly, I truly appreciate it. ruclips.net/user/shorts2EdgpFJykQI?feature=share
Any bike with a sump oil system built into the frame has that filter. Read your owners manual and never leave yourself guessing. They make them for a reason.
Well Joseph you make an interesting point .It's a good idea to replace most any sealing type washer when you get the opportunity .While I did not replace them in the video .If I had new ones at the time I definitely would have .Know that I have ordered all of the washers required for the next oil change and will be certain to install them then .They cost so little and it's good insurance to replace them when you can . Thanks for the great question. Cheers 🍻
@@ForTheLoveOfWheels My apologies. Terribly sorry about that error. I rarely have any woman interested in any of my videos and the channel analytics show 99 % male followers so I regrettably made an incorrect assumption. I should have looked closer at your icon Image . Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Cheers to you Miss @ ForTheLoveOfWheels.
Wish I had this video when I changed the oil yesterday in my new 23 sm. Apparently I put the crush washer on the front drain upside down.... I got confused also b/c they only sent me one crush washer when I purchased the kit, even though there are two drain bolts. Nothing has leaked as of yet, so I think I'm ok. I will make sure next time I ask for both crush washers, and put them in facing the right way. I don't think it's worth draining and redoing it all and wasting oil if it's currently not leaking. Thoughts?
Not to worry man , you'll be fine .There's lots of guys out there who never replace the washer at all or use all kinds of other bits and pieces to save a buck .If you get a chance take a look at the video I recently put out about an oil change on a suzuki bandit There's lots of comments about crush washers high lighted in that one ..you.may get a chuckle its pretty funny what some people say .Cheers my friend and thanks for taking the time to comment.
It's typically a procedure done on race engines that secures a bolt in position once its torqued down .The bolt head would have a small hole drilled through it that allows a thin wire to pass through and be secured to a fixed point on the frame or engine. It may be a little bit over the top for some people. But it's a failsafe way to be 100 % sure nothing comes loose .That's why it's a must on any race bike to pass tech .If you observe proper torque settings you should be ok in most normal road bike applications .Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers 🍻
While a level is not required ,Its a great way to visually highlight how important it is to have your bike level to get an accurate read . I was just trying to get a point across .
Hello, I've bought recently a 400 DR-Z and a I make my first oil change but I forgot to empty oil in the front frame (sorry my bad....) I replace oil and the 1.8 liter goes inside without overflow. Should I be worried to have to much oil in the frame/engine ? Or the whole previous oil had gone out by the engine hole because its the lowest point of both oil change holes ? Thank you for your help
There's a good chance you have too much oil in the bike .It will only show the correct level of oil on the dip stick when the engine is warm . It's an easy mistake to make .I would start over by draining the frame and engine and if you change the filter add 1.8 liters .of oil. If you don't change the filter add 1.7 liters. Then warm.the engine and check the dip stick ...its very important to check when warmed up .That's how you will get true read .
@kurtsvensson4362 You're not alone Kurt .I did the same thing until I actually read the manual. So I'm guessing it really doesn't matter that much ,I mean some guys don't even replace them . Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Cheers buddy 🍺
Just checked out your channel to get a sense of perspective as to how you roll. Your comment matches the commenter perfectly . No shade meant ,you do you man .What ever works for you .If chirping me makes you feel better have at it .
While it's not a filter to be routinely changed out , it is good to know it exists and maybe clean it out once in a while. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers 🍻
@KnowUrEnemy Ha ha ..I think it's main function is an access point for pressure test equipment .But it does provide a usable drain function for that filter housing .Although there have been past commentors that say it's a risky move because the housing is a little weak and prone to cracking if over torqued. So approach with caution.
@@TRyanLearnBikes If only I had a clue what that meant. Obviously it’s a « secret », but sadly there’s no manual and fortunately I don’t care. You continue to try and learn, eh? Just remember the world is always well ahead of you and when you « discover » something new, don’t assume your prior ignorance was a result of a cover-up conspiracy. It’s all out there in black and white in a thing called a book.
I consider it like this you have tight that you can’t undo by hand and you need a tool. And then way up on the other end you have a tight that snaps the bolt head off ....... but in the middle, you will find reasonably tight….lol

Hi Wayne, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

Best vid on the net. Thx!
Hey Kevin thanks very much for such a great comment .Cheers my friend 🍻
First of all, Great video! Very informative. Secondly, where'd you get your front headlight? I really like the way it looks.
Nicely presented. 👍
Very much appreciate the kind words. Cheers to you good sir .
Great vid my guy!
Hey man thanks very much .Thats super nice of you to say .You made my day .Cheers to you, good sir 🍺
What is safety wire on drain bolts?

How often do the o-rings and crush washers need to be replaced?
@prominence2826 I recommend replacing the crush washers with every oil chang and the O rings if they get damaged or become hard over time or if the start to show signs of leaking .Hope that helps .Cheers 🥃
Are all the washers crush washers? Is that just regular white lithium grease for the filter cap thing? Do you replace that O-ring also?
Both drain bolts should have new crush washers.Just regular white lithium grease works fine to hold in the O ring on the cover .And Yes I do recommend replacing both O rings .But you don't usually have to unless the old ones are compromised in some way .
Thank You Sir!!! Perfect Video
My pleasure. I'm glad to have been able to help .Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment so kindly. Cheers to you good sir 🍺
@@TRyanLearnBikes As to you buddy 🍻
What’s ‘safety wire’? Great vid mate. From Australia
Cheers 🍻
That Was Great. A Little More To It Than A Usual Oil Change, Huh!?! Thank You. (Comment #236)

Thanks very much .I appreciate you watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment .Cheers
Any bike with a sump oil system built into the frame has that filter. Read your owners manual and never leave yourself guessing. They make them for a reason.
Thanks T Ryan
You're welcome. Cheers 🍻
Should you replace the washers from the banjo bolt and the oil filter drain bolt washer everytime like the crush washers? If not, how often? Thank you
Well Joseph you make an interesting point .It's a good idea to replace most any sealing type washer when you get the opportunity .While I did not replace them in the video .If I had new ones at the time I definitely would have .Know that I have ordered all of the washers required for the next oil change and will be certain to install them then .They cost so little and it's good insurance to replace them when you can . Thanks for the great question.
Cheers 🍻

What do you mean to use safety wire??
It's typically a procedure done on race engines that secures a bolt in position once its torqued down .The bolt head would have a small hole drilled through it that allows a thin wire to pass through and be secured to a fixed point on the frame or engine. It may be a little bit over the top for some people. But it's a failsafe way to be 100 % sure nothing comes loose .That's why it's a must on any race bike to pass tech .If you observe proper torque settings you should be ok in most normal road bike applications .Thanks for watching and commenting.
Cheers 🍻
EXCELLENT video

I lost one of the skid plates bolts so I have one less step
@Man11235 Sound's like a solid time saving move to me ..Im going to remove a bolt off my bike first thing in the morning. Thanks
First time I've ever seen a level used during an oil change?
While a level is not required ,Its a great way to visually highlight how important it is to have your bike level to get an accurate read . I was just trying to get a point across .
Hello,
I've bought recently a 400 DR-Z and a I make my first oil change but I forgot to empty oil in the front frame (sorry my bad....) I replace oil and the 1.8 liter goes inside without overflow.
@@TRyanLearnBikes OK. I'll proceed according your advice. Thank you very much :)
And I made a 3km test run after oil change. Do I had any chance to damage the engine ?
@yannickfis6106 No man you should be ok ..I did the same thing with no issues..Its all about learning from our mistakes right Ride safe my friend
@@TRyanLearnBikes . OK thank you very much for your answers and your time 🙂 and of course, thank you for the video 😁
Is it the same for the S?
Yes sir you should be fine the S and the SM use the same motor .
I’ve done nearly 10 oil changes on my drz since i got it new and it turns out i’ve put my crush washers on upside down every time. Oops.
@kurtsvensson4362 You're not alone Kurt .I did the same thing until I actually read the manual.
So I'm guessing it really doesn't matter that much ,I mean some guys don't even replace them .

Where was the secret oil filter that we needed to know about at?
Many are unaware of the screen inside of the frame.
Bruh… there’s a filter housing drain plug? So many messes could’ve been avoided lol
RTFM!
@@paultinwell5557 NFSS!
It’s all out there in black and white in a thing called a book.
i put my crush washer on the opposite way, hmmmm
Not to worry ,it will still work fine . I've done it that way in the past also .But the manual specifically recommends as shown in the video .
😮😮😮🙏
The only problem is what you consider reasonably tight and what I consider reasonably tight are very two different things lol 🤷♂️
I consider it like this you have tight that you can’t undo by hand and you need a tool. And then way up on the other end you have a tight that snaps the bolt head off ....... but in the middle, you will find reasonably tight….lol
