Doing this mod, along with a full performance exhaust and jet kit, really gave my Drz400 a good boost in power. The power increase is very noticeable, and the throttle response is much better now too. I would definitely recommend this mod. Just keep in mind, you can expect the need for more frequent oil changes with the larger intake hole on airbox.
Just bought a used DRZ it had the 3x3 mod done to it I just noticed. No clue if it’s been rejetted though. Any idea easiest way to find that out? The previous owner didn’t do it so he doesn’t know. And it’s completely stock besides that. Seems to ride fine too

I don’t have either... yet lol 😂 I’m thinking about buying one though , there seems to be a lot of modifications necessary to get the bike up to speed . I sure wish Suzuki would just just give it fuel injection. And a 6 speed transmission, and a diet to get the weight down.
Good video. The only thing I can suggest to you, or anyone else working on Japanese bikes - get a good set of JIS screwdrivers. The fasteners on our bikes aren't Phillips like they might seem at first glance, but rather JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). This was something an old motorcycle mechanic taught me 20 years ago, and I quit stripping screws on these bikes since then.
AKJeeper Absolutely! I was going to make the same comment. I bought some great Vessel screwdrivers that have a hex section so that you can use a wrench on them if the screws are tight ( www.vesseltools.com/handtools/screwdrivers/megadora/930-kit-p123-detail). They work like a charm. Using Phillips screwdrivers on JIS fasteners or on Pozidrive (found on Brit bikes) just chews up the heads and ruins your screwdriver as well, although Philips screwdrivers are junk to begin with, so no real loss there.
Peter Eastwood thank you for sharing that link , I just ordered the 8 piece ‘motorcycle repair kit’ $96 but excellent quality tools and worth every penny just to save yourself the headaches and frustration alone by using the proper tools .
Such a pleasure to watch this! Superb camera focus, great angles, no hideous music, no inane mumbling or eye-rolling “vlogger” type voice over. Good heavens this was soul soothing, hahaha!
Holy cow this video is incredible, thanks for using a HD camera and tripod - so much easier to watch. I just had to clean out a clogged jet on my carb and did everything the absolute hardest way. I would have saved so much headache if I would have simply loosened the subframe not tried to pull off that entire rubbery air box thing. That nearly killed me.
THANK YOU !!! This was a great vid. Also thank AJ Keeper for the info about the JIS phillips drivers, been a mechanic all my life (62) and didnt know that, will order a set tonight.

They are similar to philips but ever so slightly different. It doesn't help that they are put on TIGHT when stock and they are made of the softest metal known to mankind.... Anyway, I was able to get mine off without stripping when applying a ton of downward pressure and using a JIS screw driver.

Very nice! Luciano and I are both looking at getting DRZ400s for dualsporting. He’s on a KLR now and I’m on the Multi, both on TKC80S but limited compared to a lighter bike. Trails we take that are stressful on the big bikes are a joy on my CRF230F, hoping the DRZ lets us get to the trails with ease and handle the off-road better than the big Adventure bikes.
That's awesome, I've been seeing your pictures on FB, definitely jealous and something I'd like to do in the future. The DRZ is great due to its lightness and extensive aftermarket, they can be found fairly cheap too. I sold mine earlier this year and miss it for sure.
This video is good. I do like more of the step by step better. But over all good vid. When i get my bike i will watch this and have to stop the vid every move you make. But it is what it is.
What happens if you jet the carb but don’t do the air box mod? I recently sent my drz in for its first service (600 miles) and while it was there I told them to jet the carb and put a new full yoshi exhaust system on the bike. I don’t know if they did the air box mod and my bike seems to be running a little strange since they did the mods. While riding around 60 mph the bike just shut off and sometimes when I twist the throttle I feel I don’t get an immediate response. Would the airbox feed the system enough air to make it run correctly if the airbox mod wasn’t done after they put the jet kit in? Any info would help. Thanks in advance!
