    I've had a 2020 DR650 for about 4 years now, and I still absolutely love it. It's kind of like the baby bear's porridge in Goldilocks and the three bears, where it's just right in every area. It's not going to blow you away in any respect, but it's an absolute blast and it's reliable as hell. In all the research I've done, I don't think there is a better all-around adventure bike that exists.

    I owned a DRZ400, used it as my adventure bike. Many trips to Nevada, camping off the bike. It was excellent, except the lacking on the highway. I bought an EXC 530 after that, very good bike, a notch better on the highway. I will be getting a DR 650 this spring. I feel the best all-around bike for me.

    I think, in the future, a DRZ 400 build would be interesting, but before, you have plenty of mods to do on your XR and DR. I have a 14 tooth on my DR and it is happy at 65 - 70 mph and that is all I need. I also have a 4.9 gal IMS tank which I like. It just gives me more range and I don't have to fill it up as often and is a good looking tank. I also have a Seat Concepts seat which I really like. You may want to try lowering the DR by changing the pin in the linkage and dropping the forks in the triple clamps. That was one of my 1st mods and now I can almost flat foot the bike and it costs nothing to do. Great video as always, keep up the good work!

    18 year DRZ owner here. I bought a 2002 S model in 2006. During the time I've owned it, I've had a few other bikes:
    1. In early 2012 I bought a 2012 KTM 500 EXC. I only rode it for one riding season. I sold it after two years because I moved and didn't ride it the second year I had it.
    2. Later in 2012 I bought a 2007 KLR 650. I did two Adventure rides on it, camping off the bike both trips. I realized how much I HATE tent camping. I did a few local rides too, then sold it in early 2020 I think. It become a dust collecting garage ornament
    3. In 2019 I bought a new KTM 450 EXC-F (dual sport). I still have it and have a blast riding it on technical single track - it's easier than my DRZ on single track as I get older.
    4. In 2022 I bought a T7 with the plan of doing some BDR / ADV riding with it. A year and a half later I concluded it was way too big and top heavy for me. After breaking my wrist in early 2023, I realized a big heavy bike and doing street riding just isn't the type of riding I have any interest doing moving forward, so I sold the T7 in April of this year (2024)
    I really don't do highway riding, so the DRZ still suits me just fine for most of the riding I do. I trailer the DRZ and KTM (I usually take both when I go camping) to ride. I set up a base camp with my RV you may have seen on my other channel (Delta Bravo here on You Tube)

      @@JasonRidesmoto It probably comes down to what type of riding you mostly do.
      Today I did a bunch of single track riding (probably 20-25 miles) with a bunch of dirt roads to get back to camp. Trails are much more fun om the KTM. I've given up riding my DRZ on trails in the PNW - they were fine in my younger years, but too much work nowadays on the DRZ, so the DRZ is my preferred bike for dong an all day, high miles dirt road ride.

    Bought a ‘06 DRZ400S from a guy who had a shop or dealer put a Yoshimura pipe on it, mod the intake and jets. He sold it to me with only 500 or less miles on it. Holy crap, Batman was that a firecracker in a can! Couldn’t believe the power. It would power wheelie easily in 3rd and I dare say if I kind of dumped the clutch into 4th it was still wheelie-ing. I put a smaller sprocket on and used it to get me going faster on the road. Man did it go. Didn’t hesitate to do 100. But it was tall, loud, and because I mainly roaded it, it was pure bluster in the wind. 2-2.5 hours is all I could take. My ass wanted a break, too. Now I have a Versys 650 which is a helluva great riding bike, but is kind of too heavy still and I do like to ride gravel backroads and it’s not too great for that. I’m highly interested in these new bikes coming out that are 450 twin adventure bikes. If power to weight ratio is right, they could be awesome. Probably will need modification to get the right power out of them.

    Wow, we have done exactly the same thing. I had a DRZ400 in exact same colours as yours (mine was an S model) but found it a bit "small" and just wasn't quite what I wanted. And yeah, the DRZ felt "stressed" on the open road. I've now got a DR650, its 20 years old, 43,000kms (I've put 3000 so far) and its the bike I should have bought 10 years ago, fair dinkum. It's amazing. I've been doing heaps of mods and have just gone to 15/43 sprockets which has made it fantastic on the open road. Honestly I feel like I could ride it anywhere. It's the G.O.A.T for sure.

    (omitting street bikes I've owned) I've had 2 KLR 650s (2nd gen). They were heavy and hard work offroad. In an attempt to get better at gravel, I bought a DRZ400sm with knobbie tires, as it was really the only thing available at the time and in my budget. I thought it was just a smaller lighter dual sport and I did not understand how much difference wheel size can make. I fell in LOVE w dual sport and also SM! Years later I have bought 2 klx 300s. A klx-DS for trails and a KLX sm for street. The DRZ is an excellent choice. Carb bikes are a deal breaker for me, but I have enjoyed your DR650, and XR650 videos and I will happily enjoy future DRZ400 build videos too! 🍿

I've been on plenty of sport bikes and bikes like the Honda 919, but I suspect the combo of smaller, wider wheels/tires, the SM ergos & the light weight of something like a DRZ or KLX would be a blast. I'd also really like to try one with off road tires! The carbs/chokes on my new bikes definitely took some getting used to! Haha. I'm glad your enjoying the videos!!!

      That's probably one of the biggest skills I was lacking back in the day. You can ride a stock dual sport, but it doesn't take to many mods or much money to make them work much, much better for your own riding style and trails! Interesting that you say that. As much as I like the ability to run highway, I would always rather cruise at 55-60mph.

  • @machupikachu1085
    @machupikachu1085 3 месяца назад +3

    Hey Swanky. I'm glad you made this video! This is probably the hardest decision for intermediate rider to choose: Dr.650, or Dr.Z?
    Lower seat height vs. better suspension. Gotta choose one or the other, right?
    Have you considered a Dr.Z 400sm? It's got a 2 inch lower seat height, better components (handlebars, inverted shocks, etc) and slightly taller gearing for road manners. Plus, with the 17" rear, you can run a 19" front rim and keep your full suspension travel - which is in a different solar system compared to the 650 shocks off road. I've had my sm for over a year and put around 8000 miles on it 50/50 riding, and I have yet to bottom out the stock suspension. Plus, they hold their value a little better.
    It really is kind of the sweet spot between the two. Something to think about. Thanks for all you do.
    Cheers!

      @SwankyCatProductions Sure, but the DR350 benefited from six gears, and they had the DR650 at that time as well. Back when I first learned about dualsports I was watching Everide and a few others from that region of the country and the DRZ was definitely on my short list. What became apparent pretty quickly was that it is pretty one-sided. It seemed that no matter what they did to those bikes the DRZ’s were great off road and sucked on the street. Since there is a distinct lack of trails where I live I ended up going with the KLR, which I thought handled the road just fine at reasonable speeds. I don’t know that the DRZ can really do anything better than modded DR but if you get one I’ll keep watching.
    The new Himalayan would be interesting choice, but definitely know what you’re getting into. I sold my KLR and wound up getting a Royal Enfield Interceptor. It just made me realize that dualsports are where I belong. I miss that long travel suspension. The point about RE though is that while they have a lot to recommend them they are built to a price, and are extremely heavy compared to the bikes you’ve been riding. Plus dealer support is sporadic at best and RE won’t share the shop manuals of their new models.
    Ever considered the CRF300l Rally? It’s just recently started to pique my interest since my quest to find an XR650 seems doomed to fail.

    • @machupikachu1085

      The 300L is completely gutless sadly. 0-60 in the 10 second range. No bueno for street use in my experience. Even a fully modded it is in the 7 second range. Stock Dr.Z's in the 5's, in the 4's fully modded. 50% more HP and TQ than team red while being about 20 pounds lighter. Plus better suspension, and Japanese build quality. If you are used to bigger machines, I think you will probably be disappointed with the 300L, especially on the street.
      If you are mainly riding on road, consider a Dr.Z 400sm and put 50/50 tires on it. I think that may be a great option for ya. It will eat twisties for lunch and still be better off road than the Honda.
      Cheers!

My honest six year, 36,000 miles of ownership opinion is: If the DRZ was THE ONLY bike I owned, it would only be so-so. But when paired with a street bike, in my case a 1200 Sportster, it's fantastic. I think people put too much emphasis on the seat height when it comes to confidence. I was definitely one of those people. I am 5'8" 125lbs 30" inseam and I have gotten very comfortable with the 35" seat height on the CRF300L rally. I can only reach the ground with the toes on one foot. It's a trade off with less confidence at a traffic light but more confidence off road. I never doubt that I can climb over something without bottoming out and I never worry about dragging a pegs like I used to on other bikes.
    Now for cornering speed I can't argue that lower is faster but I actually enjoy the feeling of cornering on a tall bike a lot and that's coming from someone who has a couple thousand miles on a stretched minibike lol.

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  3 месяца назад +2

      I don't disagree. A low seat height can certainly make you lazy and cause you to catch yourself by putting your feet down, when you should really be figuring out how to control the bike at low speeds, while standing on the pegs. However, if your brand new and learning on your own like I was, tipping over or worrying about tipping over isn't much fun and can be discouraging. Learning to corner on gravel is also a bit sketchy on a taller bike, where the DR almost does it on it's own. I think a lot of it comes down to personal ambitions and riding terrain though.

      I have had 2 DR 350s. These are my absolute favorite dirt bikes but not race bikes. I use to race motocross and have had many race bikes and dirt bikes, but for just riding off road I liked the DR 350 best. With the 6-speed I went up 4 teeth on the rear sprocket which made it a goat and it would still do 70 - 75 mph. It has a lower gear then my buddy's XR 400 and about 10 mph more on top and that is with the lower gearing. I never had a problem with the bikes. Why Suzuki did not put a 6-speed trans in their DRZ is beyond me.

    I have a DRZ400s now and am not sure I am totally satisfied. I never feel like i am in the right gear cruising the neighborhood. Dont think I would try a long rode ride with it. I did a tough trail ride on some muddy mountain trails, and it was challenging keeping it upright. The weight and height are not a good combo on tough terrain. I'm 6', 200lb. So I touch the ground ok on it, but can't flat foot. I can take my sons TTR230 and do those same trails all day long no problem.
    So I am thinking the DR650 might be better for me. At least better for the roads and light trail riding. The lower center of gravity a major plus. And I could pick up a true dirt bike for some of the ATV parks, tough trails, etc. Maybe a KLX300R.

      I had a DRZ. The only reason I sold it was due to medical bills. When I was ready to buy a new one, that’s when the 300s were released, so I went for that. You can definitely feel the new technology differences. The bikes are practically the same weight but the 300 feels lighter. The fuel injection and 6th gear is what really made me happy with my decision. However, I did have to dump about $2k+ into the 300 before I was completely happy with it. And I’m just an off road guy. I try to avoid Hwy riding at all cost. But if I do have to hit the Hwy I have no problem running 70mph since the bike tops out at 81mph. But as far as off roading goes, I’ll take the 300 over the 400 any day.

Has mildly annoying engine vibration but less than the 500s which were horrible. The seat needs to be replaced if you ever plan on sitting down, it needs the KTM skid plate which is extra, and the rear plastic sub-fender that holds the turn signals on needs its mounting screws drilled and safety wired so it won't fall off, and it needs real hand guards installed. It is incredibly good on dirt. So superior to the bigger heavier bikes on single track. Wish it had a Cush drive for street, but tolerable.

    Maintenance intervals is a major consideration for me when I am looking at bikes. I checked multiple sources, and the DRZ-400 has 3500 mile oil change intervals, so not too bad.

  • @64faffi
    @64faffi 2 месяца назад

    Regarding the oil capacity, the 400 is liquid cooled, which means the toll on the oil is significantly less than on the air cooled 650. Basically, the 650 need more of the cooling to come from the oil, and the top end can become much hotter, so the oil degrade quicker. In addition, air cooled engines take longer to heat up the oil, and again cold oil cause more wear than warm oil, which again cause oil contamination.

  • @6226superhurricane
    @6226superhurricane 3 месяца назад

    drz400 oil change interval is 6000km (3728 miles) suzuki recommends half intervals for offroad use so 3000km (1864 miles) this is the exact same recommendation as for the dr650.
    keep in mind air cooled bikes can be much harder on oil temperature wise.
    personally i change the oil on my drz400e at half interval 3000km regardless but having the 6000km interval gives me peace of mind if i'm on an adv ride and i have to stretch my interval past the normal 3000km a bit.

      I'm in the same boat! Love the TW, but I shy away from highways (where people want to go 65+) and would never dare to get on the Interstate, but I can take the DRZ those places and still go off-road. The extra clearance has gotten me up some deeply rutted singletrack where the TW is dragging foot pegs on the sides, and the HP has run me up stuff my old tired TW can't pull me up. For the rest of the off-road riding though, the TW is just as great as long as I keep it slow. I suspect most of that middle-ground would be fine on the DR650, and I'd be more comfortable getting there.

    The two issues with the Suziki DR650. 1. Air Cooled, I've seen the exhaust pipe glowing red hot while trail riding slow technical mud hole trails with my riding friend on his DR650, he would have to stop and let the DR cool down, at the same time my KLR650 would still be running cool. 2. The gas tank on the DR650 is way too small, after about 3 to 4 hours of trail riding my friend would have to switch to Reserve and head out to go look for a gas station, while on my KLR I can trail ride all day long on one tank of gas. Even though the KLR is a little heavier than the DR650 that is because of the bigger gas tank and the radiator than the DR and the KLR have about the power output and the speeds you can ride are the same, he can't loose me and I can't loose him. Speed your money on tires, tires are the main factor in acceleration / traction and not getting stuck in the mud. The big 650 single cylinder motors chug though the mud like tractors with the right rear tire. Both bikes need the carbs rejetted, and performance mufflers.

      Drs are actually oil cooled and stay incredibly cool all the time. XR650Ls areair cooled but drs have a large oil capacity and the oil is routed through the engine like coolant then through an oil cooler. Your buddies had stock jetting probably which is lean and causes the pipe to glow. Once jetted correctly you can beat them through uphill rock gardens while riding the clutch for an hour straight and it will never get too hot.

    This is the "why I love the DR650 and had a hard time with the DRZ-400" review/explanation that I've been waiting for. Thank you!
    You make a lot of great points. I've not ridden a DR650 but I've wondered about many of them.
    I can take the DR-Z400S on all the highways and interstates around here, but I don't like going 80 and the bike is super buzzy even at 60-65+. Sometimes it is a little tiresome getting my leg over the bike, and in some sketchy places I've nearly had a spill as I struggled to get a foot down but... Could I have done the same sketchy trail with a heavier bike with lower clearance? That is hard to say.
    Another hit against the DRZ-400S is like the XR650, the weight is higher, and that makes the bike feel heavier when leveraging it up, or holding it up when it is leaning over.
    At the end of the day, I like being able to ride my motorcycle to the trails and go exploring. I mostly stick to ATV+ roads, and shy away from the more risky trails that really need a light weight dirt bike. I don't do jumps, but I have really appreciated the DR-Z400S suspension eating up some rough spots that I came up on too fast to stop that I'm sure I would have eaten and thrown my TW200. Sure, the fix for that is go slower, but there are some rough forest roads around here that you would have to crawl over with lesser suspension.
    I don't think I'll swap the DR-Z, it has been such a boost to my exploring range and capability over the TW200 (mostly because I can keep up with traffic pulling up the canyon roads), but maybe someday I can add a DR650 to my garage. It is nice that it falls under 649cc for those who don't have the "any size" endorsement to ride.

      I’d love to see you get a DRZ400, and possibly an SM model. Try knobby tires on the 17’s vs. the 18/21 combo, and see if makes sense for how you ride to have one set or the other more. The SM is lower, even with 18/21 wheels, so maybe it would fit you better anyway. I’m seriously looking at getting one myself, and because I can only realistically have one bike at a time, I need it to do everything, even if it isn’t ideal for everything. I’m mostly a street rider, so the SM seems ideal for me, and with some knobbier tires, I think it could be fun for some light off roading as well.

    Stick with the 650. Both great, but the 650 is a small bit more versatile and slightly better in most normal day to day work. The 400 is awesome but id take the 650 every time. Suspension on the 400 is a bit better stock, but once you get some EMU's and/or rear shock swap, the dr setup is pretty sweet. The key to the 650 is that low torque, its so damn forgiving. Ive been stuck in some thick $&*% and just chugged through or up it. Plunk plunk plunk and idle your way through almost any slop.

      They're in a few spots, the video description, and also in the top pinned comment from me. Here's the install video I did as well. I ordered it for a 701 Enduro, so it should have come with brackets for a 1 1/8" fat bar, like I have on my modded DR, but they sent me the wrong brackets. I made them work but also let the seller know, and now they sent me the right ones. So if you decide to pick one up, just make sure you pick the right one for your handlebar diameter, and then cross your fingers you get the right size I suppose, haha.

      @SwankyCatProductions as a DR650 owner whos dropped my bike in the sandy single track a few times, the idea of a DR like bike that only weighs 286 pounds but can still go highway speeds because of a 6th gear is very attractive. If only it still had a lower seat height like the 650

    IMO ditch the DRZ, a new one is on the way and a review/build series on the new bike will always generate more clicks.
    Plus the KTM390 ADV, and possibly Enduro are due soon.
    No doubt other “unicorn” challengers will be on the near horizon as well.
    The DR650 is tried and true but out of the box less than what it can be, a build series on it will be fun for you but I doubt you could cover any unique ground. Ultimately you would be playing to the choir, I’m my opinion, I’d still watch but it would probably only appeal to a limited audience.
    If you do the DR try a 790 swap with a Nova gearbox, that’s a build I’ve love to see.

    Hay Ben ! .....
    I'ed like to see the Himalayan 450 get under you ! the DRZ400 not so much.
    simply because they screwed up badly on the DRZ in my opinion. seat height, valve shims
    and alot of other stuff....and it's price was not completive being several hundreds of dollars more. than the competition.
    if you would have done a comparison of the CSC RX4 a few years back you would have saved me alot of money..... it's weight and high center of gravity was a major turn off to me
    I had no idea that they would make a 450cc bike that heavy ! however I found out real fast that it felt as heavy as a VT1100 Honda !!!! Darn near imposable to pick up !....
    I sold it and got the XR650L and have never looked back. I would have gotten a DR650 but they are near imposable to find here !
    .... and Yes ...when you see a deer SLOW Down because there are 5 more that you don't see
    I've never hit one but it's been soo close I had one jump over me and my bike doing 70mph !
    never hit one yet... but I've had many instances where they made themselves a moving target !!! .....amd at 70mph the paramedics would have a hard time determining which part is human and which part is Deer..... a grizzly thought,... but one you should be aware of riding a motorcycle !

      I think it depends where and how hard/fast your riding. I rode my DR next to my XR on some single track and quickly realized how much better the XR handled. Out on the road or at a slower pace, I think it's the exact opposite. I'd assume it'd be pretty similar with the DR & DRZ.

    • @chrisoliver8423
      @chrisoliver8423 Месяц назад

      If you ride single track, Your Dr650 isn't comparable to a drz400 ! That is where the Drz400 excels over the bigger 650's by light year's !
      Only thing better about the Dr650 an Xr650 is highway speeds ! That's it lol
      If you are offroading at all, The Suzuki drz400 is better in All area's off pavement.
      I believe this is the consensus with anyone who has ridden all models.

    DRZ owner here. I’m gonna be frank. No comparison between the bikes. Two different machines. Don’t bother with the DRZ, as we’ve just spent the last half hour listening to you selling yourself on the 650, and by way of your riding style, seems the right tool for the job….maybe even a Himalayan or GS. Clearly seeking comfort, and that’s alright. Just that the DRZ is a motocross (not a single track) bike with road lights, powered by the front lung out of a TL1000 sport bike…that masquerades as dual sport by way of its pillion pegs, legit tripmeter and low slung factory handlebars. You want a real eye-opener to contrast the DR650 experience with? Seek out a ‘91 or newer XR250L.
