- Hey guys! So if this video isn't in 1080p I apologize, but here is the latest mod to my DRZ! It makes a WORLD of difference to change out your front and rear sprockets. I hope you guys enjoy and stay tuned for more videos to come.
For everyone saying my chain is too loose. The problem was my bottom chain roller somehow got rekt and I replaced it and it's back to normal tension 👌🏻
bs your chain is WAY to loose
That's a really good way to send a chain off and lock up your rear wheel. Good way to go down hard at 80mph too. You were in a t shirt, we are looking out for you. Never ride like that again. Holy crap
With the rear sprocket, only use a 12mm box wrench to loosen it. Forget about the alan side bolt until loose.
Thanks for calling out your speeds, and what gears you were in at the time. That really helps.
Your master link is on incorrectly. Make sure the lock clip opens facing opposite of the travel of the chain.
Julien T-B I totally saw that in the video and changed it lol good looking out bro!
Any time you have a bolt with a nut on it, you ALWAYS loosen the nut. You have to hold the bolt, but don't try to turn it, turn the nut. But problems like you had are how you learn! I've got the most badass drz400e that i plated and I'm going to try a smaller rear sprocket. Thank you for the video, even though it's 6 years old! Oh my God, i can't believe you rode it with the chain so loose!!! You're lucky it didn't bunch up in front of the drive sprocket and smash your case!
Yup
I went 15/47, just changed the front sprocket only, works as a great all rounder for me. Low enough gearing for the fire trails and high enough for the freeway.
Better fuel economy and a longer run in each gear. No problems for a wheelie 👍
This video is one of my favs, cause when you first rip it up with the 15-41 THAT IS WHAT RIDING IS ABOUT. The pure joy. If you don't ride you don't know.
For real
I really appreciate every aspect of your piece. Thank you. I’m off to the parts department today for a front sprocket with on more tooth. I believe it will be a 16. Cheers!
I'm running 15/44 and just ordered 41 rear two days ago, can't wait for it to get here especially after watching your reaction! I'm excited 😆
How did you go?!
Can't believe you rode with your chain that loose! Holy crap dude!🤣
That’s amazing ! Thank You for this video !!!
I have a RXB150 with only 4 gears. I had to change my rear sprocket for higher top speed and it was the best mod i have done for the bike. I enjoy the bike a lot more now. The bike probably goes 65mph.
If I owned a DRZ this would be one of my first mods and it doesn't negatively effect the bikes mid to top speed just the take off speed going into the mid range.
Thank you so much! This is what I’ve been looking to do to my 400 SM needs just alittle more top end,!!
your axle is in the wrong side your snail cams are upside down.
always undo the nuts on sprocket bolts the allen head is only to stop the bolt spinning after the bolt is loose.
your chain is way to loose.
Gearing makes all the difference for sure! my SM came with 15-41 originally. I just put a 39 tooth on the rear this weekend; it's even better on the highway now. I do notice a slight lack of torque off the line from the 41 but that is okay. My SM has 17 inch wheels so with your 18-21 wheels I bet the 15-41 setup now is amazing. Great video!
Snow Peak thanks man I appreciate the support! Glad you enjoyed. More weekly vids to come
I'm 15 38 on my s
Great share mate..Have watched this a few times in the past and NOW am going your way...Cheers I'm sure I won't be disappointed. currently 15/44
Appreciate the basic info,But! More numbers would top it off.(speed difference through gears,Fuel test, etc) do a follow up vid! 👍
Have a 2019 drz400sm stock. Just did a 16 tooth up front from 15. I love it.
How much torque did you lose?
@@KaelinTate not sure but after that i added 39 rear tooth. Bike can wheelie from 1st to almost top of 5th
I did a 16 up front and a 39 in the rear...perfect for the highway
awesome vid Bro i did in my KLR 650 16 front 42rear epic hwy performerce and gas milage increase quit a bit also...i don't ride lots of dirt so its awasome mod for what i need Congratz in the channel
Great video, have 2001 DRZ400 with only 2000 miles from new, great bike
Brendan Reilly thanks man I appreciate it. And yeah they really are great bikes
That chain is dangerously loose.
Measure the midpoint between the sprockets, and at that point slide your middle 3 fingers under the top run of the chain. That’s 40-50mm, and the spec.
I just bought a drz400sm yesterday and it's a cool bike, I have a crf250l too and the first time I swapped the sprockets I had one bolt strip out on me too, took hours to get that one bolt out, factory uses thread locker, I didn't put any on the bolts and after 11000 miles they never came loose
So with the 15/41 how does low end tourqe feel? im looking for a fair combination of both, still wanting to wheelie in 1st and 2nd but also be able to handle highway speeds.
I really enjoy your videos. Down to earth and to the point. I just bought a 2017 Drz400s. It's all stock. I had a 2001 did the 3x3, dyno jet and sprockets. Comparing the 2 I miss my 2001 now. I kinda want to make it a supermoto but cash is tight. Your videos inspire me. 🤙🏽
Ha. He is a rookie.
I would like to know what speed does she cruise at in 5th with the throttle only just engaged sitting upright for the best top speed commuting with the lowest revs??? Thank you in advance if you managed to reply 👍
The countershaft sprocket will come off with heat. Heat gun or map gas.
Check out Aussie Dual Sport about a short test ride.
Being a RUclips junking everything you want to do on that bike is on there.
Nice Video
Hillbillybeeemer WV I totally hear you brother. I didn't have a torch or anything at the time so my nice mechanic came in clutch lol!
i have a 15/44 now and its still torquey offroading on my taste. im lik e a70on road 30 offroad rider. Im hoping moving to a 15/38 I wont notice too much of low end torque loss. I just want it to cruise at 70 75MPH. but still able to cruise offroad
why is your chain so damn loose
Brandon Teeter just to piss you off
thank you man! i was just about doing the exact same mod for my drz and wasnt sure it would be right
but now i am!
what other mods do you have on your bike? like the 3X3 or anything else?
Props for doing it yourself ! You’ll be a pro
Could you still wheelie with this gearing??
With the use of the clutch. I doubt he'll be power wheelying
People saying about 3 to 1. There’s a simple way to say exactly how many you have per other. It’s called your gear ratio.
47/14 3.35.
44/15. 3.93
48/12 4.00
51/13 3.92
41/15 2.73
Thanks for sharing boss! I have a DRZ-E and I have been working with my gearing for the last few months! I ride 70/30 -more dirt and I have arived at 15/42. Don't know if you are aware but you should run the case saver for the 15 tooth if you haven't already. Ride safe out there man!
What's a case saver?
It's a good idea to flip your masterlink around 180* if something hits that link it can potentially come off and you lose your chain, just a heads up incase you didn't know
dirt bikes have so much power down low, you never really feel the loss
Why do ppl that have no idea make these vids cracks me up
The trick on the sprocket nuts is to turn the nut not the bolt. Use the OEM bolts, not the Trackside ones, the Trackside ones fits poorly.
Hey Buddy, with the new gearing could that DRZ sit at 110km on the freeway? Cheers
Love it planing on getting the same set.. Thanks 🙏 for the video ..
Love the realness of the video. I'm curious if you still have the same gearing ratio?
What do you run?
So use anti seize when you bolt it on.
Probably can’t climb anything with that gearing right? I want to hit trails too. Maybe 15-/43 or 14/42. Idk
Do you feel the 15/41 affects the wheelie on it my 2018 drz400sm is stock and I want to change sprockets most time Im on rode but still love to wheelie not sure wat number to go with
So it’s a 15 front and 41 rear? What’s the top speed in 5th and you did not have to buy a longer chain? Just add the master link for convenience? Can you send me a link on where you bought everything? I have a drz400s 2019. Also one more thing, with the stock handle bars, it’s a pain to find a phone Mount that fits on tight. What kind do you have?
nice video bro . I went from a 47 to a 42 on my drz 400e and i cut 5 links of the chain with angle grinder .it was 14 47 stock now 15 42 have not been for a ride yet but if it seems a little tall i'll go back to a 14 on the front
How did the 15/42 work out for you?!
What kinda tires were you running in this vid?
What’s your top end speed on that setup?
That chain is too loose!
Way too lose!
Hey man, did you find this upped your MPG's at all?? My thinking is lower RPM at highway speed=less fuel. Not that stock milage is terrible lol
I agree change gears first but I'm opposite on gears needs bigger rear for what the bike was made for a dirt bike.
I tried 15 41. Ride for a few thousand. Ended up with 15 43 which i find perfect with a 140/80 18 rear tire. Great on the highway but first gear is still reasonable for the trails. Had the 15/43 on for tenthousand k now still happy with it!
Can you run the 15/43 setup with the original chain?
@@AKJeeper I'd like to know that too...
Is it still good for trail riding in the dirt with this gearing mod?
What year is your DRZ400S please sir? I'm just wondering since it has yellow side panels. Thanks.
Im running on standard gear ratio and it doez 60mph on the 3rd so how is that possible?
you've made my day,,,,fucking hilarious!!!!!!
Dude you definitely need a new chain. That kinking in the chain is a bad sign. And don't put all your trust in the clip style master links. Your chain is way too slack for street riding too
jsnowden83 what exactly do you mean by the kinking in the chain?
In the first part of the video when you are looking down the chain you can see how there are several links kinked. It means your chain is wore out
jsnowden83 the chain has 200 miles on it and doesn't even have surface rust. I get what you mean. I'll keep an eye on it though.
SoCal Moto a bad chain won't always have rust. Just make sure you keep it adjusted correctly and well lubed
ya that chain is seriously slacked out waaaay to much
I want to change to 14 in front and 41 in back! Was it torquy and how mouch could you go top speed?
just ordered my new DRZ and also want to change the gearing for touring. thank you
is this bike a 400s or a sm? It looks like a 400s but Im just making sure
Whats the top speed? In kmph?
hows those tyres on the dirt and what brand are they. they look sweet for dirt and road
Got a question, do you think these kits would still be good offroading too?
Ahhhhh noooOOOO,, it's a trade-off
@@zrx1100zz that sucks. Welp stuck to doing 100kmph Max 🤣
Sorry about your luck with your gears. I have a 05, and had no problem changing my sprockets and chain.
Can't wait to get me a drz
3rd gear 65 bro what insane
Glad you're liking it. Ride safe!
15/41 (front/rear) sprocket is awesome for the roads but not so great on the trails. My question would be why not buy a street bike? The DRZ really is a great bike for trails and dirt roads...exploring the hinterlands. Its not built for highway use.
Can I get a thumbs up for the head smack at 8:10?😂😂 #wasted
Lame
100mph cruising I need this mod. I need to know how it does on uphills like highway in 5th gear at 75
is 14/43 good for dual sport? (soft enduro and road)
@@mtnmotoadv I install 43 and it's very good for me, i like it....
Does it calm the buzz feeling down? I’m looking for less revs around 65-70mph but be able to hit some trails. Nothing crazy technical
This is why you take your bike to a shop
Could hear it in your voice! That was awesome! You rolled on the gas and your smile went wide as your ass gripped the seat! Felt like I was riding Bitch, good vid! 👍 for sure! Need to hook up with VroomVroomDana #PussySquad!
How much strees does that put on your gear box
Man, I respect that you are trying the diy thing and all but seriously, safety first.. you made mistakes that can be seriously dangerous. Next time just do it supervised by someone who knows exactly what they are doing. Don't take the safety of your bike lightly
2:21 what's the black cylinder mounted on the left side of the rear fender? just got a drz and can't figure out what it is.
The tool kit?
battery
I liked the video dude and I feel your pain working on that thing. But when you openned it with the loose chain, master link incorrectly cliped in and no gloves on your test ride... well good luck! :))
Tomas Tomas lol part of the learning process bro. The day you meet someone who does everything perfect first try lemme know 🤙🏻
What was the top speed after you did that?
you think this would work with a DRZ 250? also might want to keep in mind what speed your tires are rated for...
Hank Amarillo I'm honestly not too sure with the dr250. Not extremely familiar with that bike. The only thing I'd say to watch out for is going when going with a bigger front sprocket just make sure you have the clearance for that
u gotta pull both axles off and clean off that black dirt grease and throw some marine grease on the axle rod mayb back the bearings and spacers wipe away excess but u def need that u will be amazed at how sqeak free and smooth the wheels will turn on her after that... and lock tite the bolts man ur day will end quick on the highway if a sprocket bolt backs out and flings out the moving chain throws it right thru the case on ur tranny... just do it right the frst time and clean and grease her up she needs it those spacers look dirty as heck..
god bless and awesome videos im thinking about getting the drz 400 r u on the 400 or do u have the 650
Is your DRZ an S or E model?
My SM used to have the stock 15/41, and then I converted it to 15/39 and made a HUGE difference.
E2Moto it's the S model. I basically converted it from the S gearing (14:44) to 15:41 and it's amazing!
I bet. Thinking about moving from 15/39 to 16/38, and it's very popular for freeway commuters.
E2Moto if you rock a 16 in the front you'll have clearance issues because it's too big for the guard. You can make it work but just remember that
SoCal Moto I got 16 front, I just run with front guard off
@@E2Moto did you did it?
Dude.. dude totally dude I mean dude wow dude awesome dude dude!!!
Are you sure you go 14 to 15 on front ? stock front for drz400s 15.
My 18 s is 15 44 now its 15 38
what part of socal are you in?
what was the top speed you got to?
Top speed?
Doesn't the DRZ400 already come with a 15 tooth sprocket in the front?
14.
You still happy with 15:41? Thinking of doing this on my DRZ400s too.
i'm about to change the gearing on my drz , i noticed the chain link in the video that others have mentioned but also my axle goes in from the leftside and you had yours going in from the right side! I'm sure it works both ways just fine but i wondered which way it was meant to go. Cheers
Just Tex I haven’t experienced any issues with how mine was setup. From when I bought my bike to now it was like that so I just figured that’s how it should be. If it worries you that much just switch it. Pretty quick fix
I think i'll keep mine the way it is. I just had a quick look on here and could only find one other bike with it the way yours are, There's a vid of a brand new 2017 at the aimexpo and it has it the same as mine so i'm guess that should be right. But either way it seems to work just fine. Cheers
Do you have 3x3 and rejet already?
master link is on the wring way dude
your master link clip is on backwards, just fyi
Do you ever ride down to San Diego?
Please stop calling me “dude”.
Relax, dude. He isn't specifically talking to you.
chill guy
Chill dude
But dude, you're the dude.
@Jeff Crouch There was a character on Andy Griffith named Dud Wash. He married Charlene Darlin'.
Hi man can you confirm again what tooth you have on the front and the rear
ACT Gear set, problem solved lol. There is no good compromise in sprockets for the DRZ using it as a dualsport. Either smoke the clutch in the woods and bust yourself, or red line at 55MPH. Now you can rock climb and idle at 65.
Thanks for the tips duuuuude.
Next time I come across a nut or bolt that is too hard to loosen I will attack it like a maniac with a hammer instead of using the right tools. I give you points for having a go but honestly you don't have a clue. 😂😂😂
Some people just don't have the right tools, instead of being an asshole, how bout you just piss off?
can you still power wheelie with that gear ratio in 1st?
Lakshan K definitely 👍🏻
Buy a chain combo tool (break, press, rivet) and use river-type master links.
I put 15/47 on my 434cc at first, then switched to a 14t on the front. I think this time around I am gonna put 15/48 on it.
Tell me how that goes man!
