DRZ400E Adventure Bike Mods Walk Around

  • A thorough walk-around of my DRZ400E, going through the modifications and upgrades made in the order that I did them to make it a more versatile machine. I am upfront about the costs involved, surprising myself a little with the total revealed, but happy as with the bike I have. Hopefully, this is useful to someone looking at getting a decent, reliable, no-frills trail bike that's capable of adventure bike riding/bike camping.
    One thing I forgot to mention was suspension - I will probably cover this down the track when it becomes something I need to upgrade.

    I did a re-pan on my stock seat with the seat concepts kit and have been happy with it. Can choose between a couple materials and foam height. All needed is a staple gun and some spray adhesive. Super clean Drz man 👌🏼

      @AdvHQ 🙃 Picked up a KLX400r not long ago as an upgrade for my well sorted KLX250s/300r. A bit longer legs and a tad better frame construction. Hoping it's a bit lighter in the front end too.

      @@ShadowVonChadwick I had a KLX400 about 10-12 years ago - had heaps of fun on it. I recently sold my DRZ and got a KTM 500. Look at the Pirelli MT21 front. Very good off and on road. Balancing the front and rear wheels makes a huge difference with vibration. A steering stabiliser is expensive but well worth it.

    • @AdvHQ
      @AdvHQ  3 года назад +1

      Thanks mate, will probably try the MT21 when we do a longer (or at least road biased) adventure. Have read mixed reviews on the steering dampeners - I do want to go to Fraser Is, and have heard they're good in the sand

      Cheers mate and congrats on your new bike - I bet the next couple weeks can't come around quick enough. I just sold my DRZ on the weekend and had done virtually everything to it except the seat. I got an older shaved seat that I tried in the backyard but didn't like it and was going to get it sorted by an upholster, but not now. Lots go the Seat Concept seat for around the $700. I tried a steering damper, $740, it worked but I still found the front end knifed in too much. Probably me not committing enough. So after that ride I decided to sell it. I replaced it with a 2017 KTM 500 and we'll see how we go!

    Ive scrolled through your videos and it looks like you don't have the drz anymore. Im looking to buy my first bike, not long now until im off my L's which i plan on selling my 4wd to buy a bike. I think ive narrowed it down to the drz and the crf300. Is there any other bikes i should be looking at or is it an obvious choice in your opinion?
    (It needs to be able to ride at 100k/h as it will be a daily commuter as well as being able to hit the tracks on the weekend)

    • @AdvHQ
      @AdvHQ  4 месяца назад +1

      Sorry mate, I can't really comment on the CRF300, Rickos Moto went from a DRZ to CRF300 - maybe look him up on YT. I don't use my bikes full time, just weekend warrior stuff but I won't be getting another DRZ. So heavy and outdated compared to other bikes now - my 2017 KTM 500 is so much nicer to ride it's not funny - especially on sand. But it will probably require more frequent oil changes, etc. Good luck with your decision mate and stay safe.

    • @JoshSinnott97
      @JoshSinnott97 4 месяца назад +1

      Cheers mate, I appreciate the honesty.
      The drz seems to always come up in forums even to this day so it's hard to feel like it's not worth looking into but it's hard to justify buying a 20 year old bike
      I'll check out the RUclips channel you recommended though, cheers. I just know if I bought a crf I'd have to do engine and suspension mods to get it where I'd want and was hoping to get something I can be happy with out of the box and I'd love that kind of bike but as a daily I'd be servicing it more than I ride it aha
      Ideally I'd like to have 2 bikes, 1 street and 1 dirt but I think I'll wait until I get off my p's so I'm more experienced.
      I'm even considering getting an adventure bike until that day comes rather than trying to turn a dual sport into one but I think I'd regret that when I finally do get to take it off road. I go away solo and don't want to deal with struggling to pick my bike up lol

    • @AdvHQ

      @@JoshSinnott97 DRZ is a good bike mate. Good power, sounds like it would suit your needs - the more weight you put on it (tank, racks, etc) has a bit of an impact to how it handles offroad. I don't regret my time on one, I just now realise how much easier these other bikes are to ride - but as I said, I basically trailer mine and then ride, so completely different situation. Rick is cool mate - will tell you his experience - he likes to ride pretty quick but not waste money unnecessarily.

    • @JoshSinnott97
      @JoshSinnott97 4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks mate, I just posted a comment on one of his videos so it would be interesting to hear what he has to say
      The reason I was thinking about the drz is because I see crf owners buying new ecu's, suspension, big bore kits etc when all of that performance comes from the factory with the drz so even though it's a more expensive bike, you don't really need to upgrade anything besides the fuel tank.
      But the biggest thing working in the crf's favour is that it's got a street bike motor, so for a commuter it might be the smarter move for my use case. I just hate spending too much on vehicles because if I have to sell it one day, I'll never get that money back

    • @AdvHQ

    I really wish we could get the E, especially the Cape York, models in the US...

    • @AdvHQ
      @AdvHQ  2 года назад

      Yeah, the Cape York pack took care of the basic mods. It's kind of funny how by far the majority of DRZ in Aus are E (with harsh registrstion laws) yet in the US they're not able to be registered (considering some of the vehicles I've seen reg'd over there).

    • @jordesign
      @jordesign 2 года назад +1

      @@AdvHQ it makes no sense... I can take a YZ450, slap a headlight and taillight on it and I can get it plated... They used to have the E models here, but it's been a while since they were sold (stopped in 2007 I think)... So, they are very scarce.

    • @AdvHQ

      You're probably right mate, as I said in the vid, I got it done during the service and new tyres so wasn't sure how much it added, was just throwing a figure for someone incase they needed it done - a shop would probably charge 1/2 hours work was the guess.
