- In our award-winning 2nd Swing Tour Van fittings, golfers are fit for their golf grip size. It may not seem like a big deal, but golf grip size can have a huge effect on performance, particularly how your hands deliver the club at impact.
In this video, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell demonstrates the effect of golf grip size by testing five different sizes out. He also explains various ways 2nd Swing will fit a golfer for golf grip size.

I am using the Winn Dri-Tac 2.0 midsize and am liking them. Didn't try the standard but I do have some arthritis in my hand. This is the most informative and simple video on grip sizing I have seen on RUclips. Length was perfect. Well done.
Great explanation on the impact of various grip sizes and ways to fit for the correct size for an individual golfer.
That is quite a lot more difference to trajectory than I thought. Interesting stuff.
I just regripped my driver and 3 Wood with JumboMax grips...I haven't tried them with a launch monitor, but I did play 9 holes earlier this week and had the most consistent performance out of both clubs that I've had all year. Straightest I think I've ever hit my 3W, some of the longest fairway shots I've ever hit with it. Shot dispersion with my driver was about the same as usual, but I got better distance out of it.
So, mileage may vary, considerably.
It is important to note that "large grip = less draw" is a generality. It works opposite with me, thinner grips slice way out to the right, and a medium JumboMax (which is larger than a normal oversize) allows me to hit pretty neutral shots. I had a standard size grip on my 3 wood when I got it, had a pretty big fade on most shots (~20 yards or so) and misses were 40+ yards right. Replaced it with a JumboMax medium just to try it out and instantly almost all my shots were straight with misses having a 10-15 yard fade. My driver has a medium MCC+4 grip and I slice that quite regularly as well, so I'm planning on replacing that with a JM as well.
Yesss agree!! I switched to mid size because of larger hands and I lost my ability to fade! Going back
@@goonytunes4119 what size glove do you wear, i struggle with slicing and fades and I use a standard grip. I wear a large size glove but im curious if i should replace them with midsize
@@bennettblackmon2858 large mens Titleist glove. For me, going back to standard from mid size was the best move ever lol!
@@bennettblackmon2858 I'd say fix the swing causing the issue, vs changing the grips, my 02c
As a tall person with big hands (XL) having played standard grip sizes my entire life, I finally made the move to midsized grips and it has made such a world of difference in my comfort level gripping the club. I'm even now trying some jumbo sized grips to see whether or not they are too large to use, or just right
Going to medium on all all my clubs has been the best thing ever. Feels great more control and even my misses arnt terrible anymore. Very underrated part of the fitting process
What grips did you get exactly? I'm leaning more toward giving the medium a try.
I just went to mid size which really helped with my arthritis in my fingers and hand. Standard size was to much pressure and after taking a testing on my finger to Wrist I should have been in the first place. Now I know
Swapped to a Jumbomax ultralite small from a standard grip. Can’t believe the great results. Didn’t realise I manipulate the club face with hands quite a bit. Shots going a lot straighter now and only miss are thin shots. Dropped around 5 shots from my scores since changing over. Fits my swing in getting a square face at impact. May not work for others but definitely worked for my swing 👍
Your comment along with many others, echos that the JumboMax grip has improved their golf. With more square face at impact, softer/comfortable feel & reduced misses to the right. 👍🏾
I decided to take a shot at mid size grips this year. Always used standards in the past. I like the CP 2 wrap by Golf Pride myself.
Did you notice any difference in your ball flight? Or was it similar? - Thomas
As I have gotten older I have gradually gone up in Grip size, these days thanks to arthritis the only grips that I can use without severe pain are the Jumbomax Ultalites (medium).
Luckily I didn't have any loss of clubhead speed or issues with Ball flight/trajectory. In fact, I found the opposite to be true with the larger Grips I am more confident to hit hard at the Ball and I have a neutral ball flight with little axis tilt.
This lines up perfectly with what I experienced after moving from midsize plus 4 grips to standard on a new iron set.
I have always had to work to draw the ball on my set with the midsize plus grips I’ve had for years. My normal shot shape has been a fade with the occasional slice. I recently bought a stock set of Wilson staff CB irons that were on sale that I plan to customize. Before I had the chance to customize them I took them out on the range. Everything I hit was between a draw and hook unless I really tried to keep it straight or fade. It was an unusual experience for me. Now I’m pondering just adding tape to standard grips to get them somewhere between my normal fade/slice bias and drawing the ball.
I wear a 3XL glove and got all my clubs re-gripped to JumboMax XL as I bought my first set. I've been steadily progressing and getting better but my shots would ALWAYS block to the right. I traveled and used a rental set with midsize grips. My shots were suddenly straight and perfect. Switched to midsize when I got home, and voila. No more grossly blocked shots.
I have an XXXL glove also and use the Large Ultralight grip, they recommended XL but I didn't want to jump right into huge grips, I have an oversize star grip on my driver and I'm hitting it better than I was with the JM on it.
This is an excellent video to explain and determine if you are using the right size grip.
I recently switched to jumbo grips and the result has been stunning. I have big hands to begin with and I’m left-handed. I spent six months troubleshooting why all my shots were going to the left even though my body was open to the target I was hitting the ball square each time, and I could literally turn parallel and be standing completely straight and still have my shots go left. I finally discovered that the reason they were going left in my case, was because my dominant hand was the one putting the power in to the shot at address through follow through. Once I increased the grip so that my right hand fit firmly around it I’m now able to keep that right hand in front of the ball and control the club more. Shots are straighter and shots are higher. My handicap went from a 28 to a 15 over a period of about four weeks practicing every day and playing five rounds of golf.
That is some awesome results by a simple grip change, nice work! - Thomas
This is what I was questioning for a very long time. Thank you
used standard for my first 2 years golfing (2 years ago) and missed left/off the toe quite a bit - switched to superstroke traxion cross comfort oversized and the difference is unreal. grip size makes a massive difference
Sounds familiar, I think I may need midsize, my hands are a bit longer than average
I have average to a little above average size hands. I used to lose the club a little with my left hand on my backswing. So much that the shaft of the club hit the back of my neck. I switched to Winn oversize/Jumbo grips, and it stopped me from doing that. It made a big difference for me.
Just had a TM FITTING. We never discussed grip but i use a standard, but after watching this video, i may go with a midsize.
Worth a try! Make sure to measure and see if your finger tips are squeezing too hard on your palm. If so, you may want to try a bigger grip!
At the end of the video you were saying the dispersion with a standard grip is better.
I'd say the consistent distance was better. But the midsized grip was clearly 1/3rd less dispersion than the standard grip was 8:16
With the jumbomax it takes a little time getting use to. 3 swings aren’t gonna cut it. I play the jumbomax currently (large glove) and it took me a minute to get use to. A whole range session to be exact. I could hit a draw easily and didn’t lose distance. I did have a strong grip. Now that I’m neutral it doesn’t move nearly as much. I feel I can swing aggressively and not go hard left now
These sorts of tests annoy me somewhat because of this right here... I'm not sure what testers expect from 3 shots with a change - any change for that matter. He achieved pretty much the exact opposite from the JumboMax that others have (shrug)
Hey swingking please answer me if you read this! I have a left miss for years now because of overactive right hand at impact (but not early release, I rather lag it long and then release into impact hard) if it goes well i hit bombs but a little too much hands and I hit miles left. Do you think these grips would be helpful? I rarely ever miss right for further info
@@AlexSteenOlsen I always said I never met a club I couldn’t turn over lol. I’ve struggled with the same thing myself in the past and have used oversized grips for years. These grips do help. It makes the issue less. But as always work on the issue.
@@swingking83 Alright thanks but. Keep working on it :D
Absolutely!! I just moved to jumbo Max's. My first swings were down at 105mph as I got used to it. As I've gotten used to them, I've cranked back up to the low 110s and my random duck hook is gone.
I find the smaller the grip size the more control I have releasing the head. Hence open? I usually don’t wear a glove but when I do, I wear a med cadet glove. PING static fitting suggested an Aqua, or under size. Going to try one. Nice demonstration as always.
I meant closed.
Excellent video. As a fitter, you have a pretty set swing, but as you said many folks are having a different experience with different sizes.
Great video and timely for me. 71 yo and some arthritic. 75 mph with 7 iron. Always have used Golf Pride Velvet standard grips. Just regripped with Lamkin Sonar Standard plus. What a huge difference in feel and comfort and dispersion. And some increase in distance. Almost like I got new clubs. So I’m wondering about the difference grip pattern and tackiness makes too.
Thanks for watching! A larger grip can help golfers that have arthritic pain & a softer feel like the sonar grips can also help. The texture / feel will be player dependent based on what feels good to them but it's worth a try. I always need a grip that is very tacky as my hands sweat a lot. - Thomas
Very interesting. To be sure the best is to do a fitting. I did it with titleist Ping and Taylormade. The three of them said medium size which took me by surprise because I have small hands and I’m using medium gloves.
Good video buddy …👍
I’m about your size and build and I’m between a standard & midsize grip!.. lately the standard size has been slipping more due to sweaty hands causing a hook and the midsize I have more grip & control Ive been shooting darts like nothing 🎯 …😎👍
That's interesting as numerous other reviews have the jumbo max quicker with control. It does take getting use too perhaps.
I tend to pull my wedges on full shots so I think I'm going to double wrap my wedges. This is a great analysis. Thanks!
One extra wrap of tape might just build it up enough to make a difference - Thomas
Thank you for the info, now i know i use slightly lil bigger grip. I know i'm somewhere between Standard Size - Mid Size. Think i need to try Standard with +2 tape on it 😀
Great video. Very informative for new golfers
Thanks for watching!!
dude - what’s the name of that gripping attachment on your air gun???
I've recently begun re gripping all my clubs with jumbo grips.
I've found that with the golf pride jumbo grip I have more club head control. I have more feel of the entire club and head. With the larger diameter grip - I don't feel the need to squeeze as hard and my hand / arm is far more relaxed than with the smaller grips. I don't feel like I need to hold on to it.
Thanks for your feedback. The results will be different for most players - Thomas
I use Arthritic grips. Rheumatoid Arthritis is my problem. Only way to limit the pain, even though I can see how it affects my shots.
What if my results are counter intuitive? My 2 fingers on my left hand dig into my palm. I wear a large glove. BUT I tend to leave the clubface open. I am a senior player with a lower clubhead speed.
when you hit "standard" .. were they the actually the MCC+4's shown before you hit, or are they a true standard? curious becuase we have a the same hand size. Ive always played a standard, but feel like my lower hand is slightly loose. not sure if +4 is right, or stick with standard
Very good look at variables as grip size alters, thanks
I everyone is the same correct. I use small size glove and the best grip size I have been using so far and I get the most distance and more consistent accurate is jumbo size. I'm a scratch single plane swing golfer not sure if that affect on convintional swing.
But again we all different or maybe it just on my head..
Where can I purchase that attachment that you are using on the air line to put on your grips?
Put Jumbo max on my driver. Played 3 round with it. Without doubt I am consistently staying in the fairway but can not say that I have not gained and distance. I can’t explain what is happening other than to say I have a much better grip on the club and seem to be able to control the head.
Would extra "spinny" make the larger grips an option on wedges more?
Is standard with 4+0 tape the same as midsize, or is there a noticable differance?
I think one factor that larger and more muscular guys may consider is that the swing style can be changed to more of a body release and 'single plane' (not really, but less of a difference in planes) and they'll more than likely be performing better with JumboMax. Right now we just have Bryson DeChambeau and many long drive champs as a sample size, so not the biggest (well Martin Borgmeier is pretty big) sample size, but I think it shows that the JumboMaxes are still viable, just have to make adjustments and they are probably more suitable for more powerful guys generally.
That said, I'm not even that big and I prefer them because of the shock absorption and generally way less strain from swinging a lot. I'm looking out for my long term health ever since getting trigger finger in my lead pinky very soon after starting out with standard-sized grips, so I am a bit obsessive on the health aspect too. :)
I am right between normal and mid-size. Went with normal on the new clubs I've ordered by am wondering if i should have gone for mid-size.
Excellent data points…Not sure why you would waste time measuring hand size and glove size. The most relevant data point is the ball flight characteristics. If you have someone who measures perfectly for standard grips, but is over-drawing the ball, they would probably benefit from a larger grip then whatever they are using (assuming all other swing factors are accounted for - not hooding their club at address, coming from an extreme inside out path, etc.). Seems the only relevant factors are current ball flight, desired ball flight, and comfort (minor factor would be the increased or reduced weight on a different grip and it’s affect on the ball). If someone is playing a Tom Lehman left to right boomerang bender, but likes that flight, so be it…That said, the market these days is also flooded with the Standard +2 or +4 MCC grips to reduce the taper. Can you do a review of those to see the affect on ball flight and numbers?
Did take into account that larger grips enable people to grip with lighter pressure which should give more ball speed and more distance. Could it be that you had a good grip pressure for your standard grip size but for the larger grip size your natural pressure was too much and therefore slowed down your club head speed?
Nearly all my grips are standard except for a titlest 3 wood i bought second hand, its got a jumbo grip,i used a medium glove, its really easy to hit, swing easy for me is always the trick and it works perfectly with that grip, why shouldnt it.i feel no difference then moving to a another club with a standard grip, but thats me,use what works 4 you guys, plus i do all my own grips.
Use the largest grip size your hands can comfortably handle.
Hand measurements are just an initial reference point, and should not be used as the sole indicator of which grip size actually feels and works best in your hands.
I presently use mid-size Golf Pride MCC+4 grips in all my clubs and am now considering trying out a jumbo grip size on a single club for experimentation to see if there are better or worse results.
If the results are better than what I am experiencing now with the current mid-size grips, I will promptly have all my clubs re-gripped with jumbo grips in short order.
4:00 this might be the ugliest taped attempt I've ever seen.... Lol, still a great video though!
Cant believe this is the only comment on that lol
Watched your video and have a serious comment. The weight of the grip may have much more impact than the size. As a senior golfer who prefers a larger grip, the Winn Dry Tac Oversize is 50 Grams vs the Lamkin Croslsline Oversize , which is over 70 grams. The swing weight of the club is not changed with the Winn grip vs most standard size grips which are in the 50 to 55 gram weight.
This is a very good point the larger grips will be heavier and that can also influence how a golfer delivers the club - Thomas
After watching the regrip with the tape just flapping in the wind as you install, I’m sure Tiger will pass on letting you touch his clubs. 🤣🤣
Do you recommend to have the same grip size with your irons and woods/drivers? So if you’re playing standard 1 wrap grip and mid size grip for the driver, is that not good to do?
I recommend keeping it consistent 95% of the time. There will be exceptions to the rule but most of the time keep it consistent - Thomas
You never discussed the feel of the grips. Softer grips often allow those with hand issues to strike the ball better and more consistently.
interesting comment on the smaller grip having more swing speed ,,,, Kyle Berkshire uses larger grips when playing golf but uses smaller grips when competing in long drive
Grip size is so critical for consistency. Larger is definitely better than to small what comes off the shelf w clubs standard. To large is batter Than to small.
Thanks for watching. Results are player dependent but definitely different player to player - Thomas
the problem with u testing, is that u have a good swing. What about hackers? Handi 15-25? I have heard they benifit from a larger grip size.
I have a tendency to leak my long irons right and pull my short irons left. Would it be strange to use an undersized grip on the 4-6 a mid-size or “plus 4” on the 8-P?
I have Standard on my irons and midsize on all my Wedges for that same reason.
If the grip is too big can it weaken your hand position?
Wich jumbomax ultralite would be near the midsize tour velvet?I use the santard size tour velvet (48/50g) and I would like to try something bigger but I dont want a swingweight change.
Jumbo Max JMX UltraLite X-small size might be close. Midsize TV is usually +1/16" that grip is +3/16" anything else is much larger - Thomas
I see, I wasn't expecting to be that big so I will try that one and maybe the small one. Thank you very much Thomas! Awesome chanel btw.
Ive found that if my grip is worn..and Im gripping tighter..Ill hook my shot more often...almost like if the grip is too small
I use Golf Pride MCC+4 grips to give me that wider less tapered width at the bottom of the grip to help reduce hooks.
Yes, gradual compression of the grip is also exactly what happens, and why grips need to be replaced with new ones more often than players might otherwise think.
If you play golf regularly as a weekend warrior, your grips should probably get changed annually by default.
Pro golfers typically change their grips every month or two, so if you're playing approximately 100 rounds of recreational golf per year, you might want to get your grips changed every six months instead.
I just switched from midsize to standard, and I’ve got to go back. I’m hooking almost every shot🤦🏻♂️
I have large palms but short fingers. I find it impossible to grip the club "properly" with even normal mens grips.
I use midsize for my arthritis and it works well for me.
woud love to see this with your driver.
I where xxl gloves, use a standard grip and slice consistently. Where to from here?
Then is not about the grip
I went to bigger grips to calm down a tendency to hook the ball, I even put on Jumbomax XL, and the effect was only temporary for me. After I got used to the larger grips, I found it even easier to hook the ball.
Same. I switched to JumboMax and it was temporary. I also lost swing speed temporarily. Like a few months temporarily
That might have more to do with the XL size than anything else. From what I've read you are supposed to use jumbomax grips 1 size down from your hand size.
So an XL grip would be for someone with xxl hands.
I'm a medium glove, so I'd use small jumbomax grips.
I havent tested them so Im not 100%, just food for thought
@@Jack-xy4fythat’s correct to a degree,I have large glove size and it says I should use a medium grip
BUT
That depends on what your miss is,for a large glove size,if u draw or hook a ball,a small grip is better and if u fade or slice the ball it’s the medium grip
You are a pro you have perfected your swing only a novice should practise different grip with sand thicknesses. Same as a boxer changing his gloves or his boots or a runner changing his shoes or a football player changing his boots as I'm sure you are away grip is the most important aspect before any kind of movement if you change the group you change how it feels in your hand which translates to the rest of your body I think it would be great if you did this test again with a complete novice
Nice suggestion. I think you will see similar results with most golfers - Thomas
I’d like to see this test done with a player who’s a higher handicap.
Thanks for the feedback. This has been added to our list - Thomas
Seems like the sweet spot is standard with a few extra layers of tape, which is what I play.. will have to think of another excuse haha
Thanks for watching. Results will be player dependent but can definitely influence performance - Thomas
Bang grip golf apa bisa di pasang untuk mallet woodball
Grip size matters very little to someone who casts, or extends early and comes over the top. Plus, this tells me I am did more harm then good using the Jumbo max grips and I saw that on the course and when practicing. Once I went back to Midsize grips. The speed, impact, direction, accuracy and club feel in hand was noticeable better immediately. CP-2 Wrap is my go to grip.
Thanks for your feedback. It's really player dependent. The CP2 wrap is a very popular grip! - Thomas
Not sure it's a fair comparison, since you've probably spent 20 years practicing with regular grips...
You could have at least given the jumbomax a few days or a week to break them in.
Good point. I have heard good results with the Jumbo max from golfers but testing is always going to be player dependent - Thomas
Great video. BUT MAN.......who put that grip on at the 4:06 mark! LOL.... the tape isnt even on and my man is forcing that mofo on! Hahaa! Oof....
I play MCC +4 standard in irons and midsized in wedges. Wear Cadet ML.
not the most scientific test tbh but interesting, grip weights will affect swing weight of the club in some cases by a lot that will also affect the outcome even colour change in the same grip will be different weights because of the additives needed to make the colour.
Great observation! The results will be different for each golfer some results will be minimal while some golfers will get significant shot direction changes.
Interesting as size decreases the dispersion goes more left
So you hit the best with the grips your used to...
This test was not accurate when it comes to the jumbomax. We did see the smaller the grip the faster the rate of closure was, which gives more distance but undersized with turning over too much causing slight pulls and left shots. With a bigger grip, the rate of closure greatly slows. You clearly were not getting straight shots so it directly took away tons of ball speed due to three miss hits going into the testing results. You should have readjusted grip position to get a straighter shot and then used THOSE numbers for the test. Again, at least we can confirm grip size directly correlates to rate of closure which can influence dispersion/aim. Not covered here, but another closure influence is shaft flex, so choosing a correct shaft flex/grip size can be used to work together to tailor your rate of closure. Just as well the wrong pairing could work against each other. For example, a very stiff shaft slows the rate of closure and would not pair well with a bigger grip that also slows the rate of closure… as you can guess this is a sure fire way to induce an almost permanent slice/push. A bigger grip will work better on whippier soft flex shafts, which is why you see long drive competitors using them with their lady flex shafts. They gain club head speed from the shaft, a face that doesn’t over close through impact because of jumbo grip, and an overall 5g lighter driver. An over all superior build is the lightest stiff shaft and lightest standard sized grip, and reallocating that weight shedding directly to the driver head (center of sole with lead tape). Now all the parts work in harmony. A very light driver that can be swung extremely fast, a grip that lets your rate of closure shine unhindered, and a stiff shaft that keeps your rate of closure in check from over turning and help tighten dispersion, and a heavier head that has a massive raise to MOI and ball speed. A grip that fits in the fingers and not the palm, creates max leverage in the wrists.
While the weight of the jumbo max could allow for more weight in the head, it’s not much of an advantage yet. Unless they make the grip 30g lighter across the board… I currently have a jumbo max small, and I push slice on what should be very powerful swings. To negate the closing of the face being slower I have to use lead tape on the heel to get the closure back to where it squares. I don’t want to mess with my grip positions because it’s already in the best biomechanical position. And changing from an x-stiff shaft to a soft flex will cost me big time dispersion and distance as the face will likely close way too soon and fast. So one has to ask… why use a grip that will need correcting with lead tape to negate the counterproductive matching? When I can just use a standard-mid sized grip with a neutral influence on rate of closure without having to add more weight to the driver head. Unless there is advantages for having a ultralite standard sized grip and a heavier head… a standard-midsized grip should always be the standard. If you want to mess with rate of closure, do it after with lead tape on toe or heel to get the rate of closure you want. Kyle Berkshire, the farthest hitter in the world refuses to use jumbo grips… based on his build and goals we can see why he opts for standard-midsize throughout the bag.
Would have been great to see multiple people with differing hand sizes to actually do the testing to make it more applicable to the general public.
Only 3 swings🤔
With each Grip🤔
I don’t know how the data is relevant if you’re already used to a standard sized grip. There’s going to be an adjustment period for the different grips which you’re not allowing for. Whose to say you wouldn’t over time cut that dispersion and face angle down with the undersized grip if you were to give yourself enough time to get used to it and potentially be better off with it as opposed to the standard?
I'm only a 5 handicap but in playing both mid-size and standard grips over the past 2 years I've noticed no real difference between them. I find either to be just as comfortable as the other.
i use jumbo max with 4 tapes lol
Thanks for watching! That is quite the setup. - Thomas
So rooted in the past, shame on you. I wonder how it would feel for a newbie to start with jumbo grips.
I’ve dipped to a division 1 golfer since using jumbo grips
Lot of guys moving to standard with two wraps.
I hope customers didn’t watch how you all regrip clubs. Tape was flopping around all over the place.
Bigger grips helps my carpal tunnel.
Somebody just doesn’t like jumbomax.
The problem with anything relating to buying a golf club, there is no standard........no standard length, no standard lie , no standard loft, no standard grip size and that is even with the same manufacturer ........all marketing BS .
What a rubbish grip fit with the jumbo max, not surprised of the result with fit.
looks like Bryson can now say it's his grips that suck. Sure cobra would prefer that
Soft grip pressure = speed and accuracy...bigger you go the greater the grip pressure, grip pressure is a speed and accuracy killer.
garbage test, 3 shots isn't achieving anything.
and anyone else who has got use to the jumbo max has not lost that sort of distance
This data totally contradicts what a few others on RUclips as well as Jumbo Max have documented... They claim higher Ball Speeds and carry distance with oversized grips due to relaxing forearm muscles and lighter grip pressure ... I guess its a YMMV situation
Nobody’s hands are the size for jumbo max
I don't care if you're as consistent as a top pro, 3 shots doesnt show anything. Get a decent sample size.
That butcher job with the wet grip tape trying to shove the grip on without turning down the tape is all world. Master club fitter my ass…
