I played DDS for a bit - I found the encounter rate to be absolutely excessive, even compared to Nocturne.
Atlus just can't seem to get the balance quite right.
SuperButterBuns dds2 is a pretty good improvement over dds. hope you enjoy it.
PS: dds2 has some of the best music meguro has done
The Demi-Fiend is my favorite SMT Protag.
Also Buns there is a very consistent way to avoid battles. It's called estoma. There's a merchant in Amala that sells a demon with all the avoidance spells.
I'm so glade you're playing the DDS series. They were my first two SMT games to get me into the franchise. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did, especially DDS2.
Nocturne's Hard Mode has the best description ever in a video game.

It's pretty accurate.
You will spend more than half your playthrough time dying.
i saw one guy doing a let's play on hard and he grinded so absurdly much he was taking down bosses and enemies in fewer hit than i was on normal. he was like 15 levels higher than me most of the game. i told him that eliminates the point of even playing on hard if you grind until it's easier than normal.
@@Jack_80 i mean if u like being REALLY frustrated. Im not spending 3 hours on a boss or level when i can overgrind and get thru the game alot easier. And hard modes are usually super brutal.
For me, i grind just enough to where at least im just a lil bit stronger than enemies. So instead of 3 hours, maybe 30 min or hour on a hard part.

@@mintce2238 voice acting tends to ruin remakes/remasters/sequels I find. Ff7 remake, Kingdom hearts 3 and many others. KH 3 was tedious compared to previous games due to having everything voice acted. This game does not need any voices

Dokie Wokie you can also die in the tutorial level because this game is totally unfair. There is NO such thing as balance. Sticking to Persona 3 thanks, the only GOOD SMT game.

Just as an FYI you can't actually kill God in the SMT games. It's more like you are killing a representation of God and it will inevitably reform. The absolute best you can do in this series is delay God, you cannot stop it.

I only have played P5 but its pretty good too. Its a bit to easy but a ton of fun.
Yes he is. You can recruit him later on in the game. He gives a coin toss to decide how much you pay him (Either half your money or just 1 piece), but fans of DMC already know exactly how to win that toss.
Unfortunately Dante isn't good for post-game content. He doesn't have a "Pierce" skill that allows him to go past resistances. His replacement in the later Japanese version, Raidou, actually does.

I played Persona 5 after Nocturne, I froze when I got to the Mot mini boss. Then realized it was a piece of cake compared to nocturne.
Ahaha big difference huh? Ive yet to get to 4 or 5. I have 5 downloaded. I've beaten persona 3 (around 300 hours) and Nocturne( over 200) .
Played some digital devil saga too.
Nocturne had some TOUGH challenges. Especially the Labyrinth of Amala. I only had one section to finish but fucked it up. I finished the challenge for Masakados tho. Which makes demifiend invincible.
Yea persona is more about the story and its made to be a bit more mainstream. If u want the same level of challenge you should stay with the main series. I'd say strange journey is even harder than nocturne. The 2 first are harder but it's more because of bad design and lack of life quality options u get used to expect when playing newer games. Oh and the world navigation is a mess.
Yeah, the last time the Persona series was difficult was in 2006
persona 5 was my first game and I struggled with that boss(I have yet to reach mot yet in nocturne) although I am better now then It was two years ago and I am replaying persona 5 so I may not struggle with it like I used to

Negotiation has always been the hardest part of these games for me, even in Persona, but I've learned very (very, very) recently in my way through SMT4 that it part of it is knowing when to tell a demon to fuck off. I ended up getting a Wicker Man in my party because he was asking for too much so I told him I was done and he was impressed then was like "But I'll be a traitor to other demons" and my response was "Yeah, and?" and that's how I got a Wicker Man which I don't even use.
I just started and right now, I just give the demons what they want lol. Most of them ask for a lot of macca and life stones which are very easy to farm.
@@obseed3041 In my experience it's usually the demons like Angels, Succubus, and Liliths that will ask you for everything then just take off for no reason. At least in SMT3. Early game it's kind of annoying since them asking for Macca and healing items really stacks up after a while. If they run off with my stuff I usually end up killing every one of that particular demon I come across until I recoup the cost.
The lesson I learned from every other smt game is just ‘pick the option that I think sounds the worst’ because my ability to gauge what any given demon wants to hear is just that bad. This was extra true in smt 4.

Mine was DemiKids (which is technically and SMT game) But I was like...10 when I played it. Then I moved on to Digital Devil Saga when I got older lol
The most recommended smt games will be smt 4 or smt 3, so you kinda right.

Abraham Pancake Mash IV is absolutely better for newcomers but its quality of life/graphics may spoil new players from playing the other older SMT games (Digital Devil Saga, Raidou, etc.). Hopefully not though because they're all great games that deserve to be played.
I went from Persona 3/4 to Nocturne, so it wasn't too much of an adjustment for me.
Nocturne is a black sheep but a lot of the series' usual gameplay elements are found in it. Alignments, demon fusion, demon negotiation, needing buffs to win, all that stuff.
You can't go wrong with IV either. The fact that Nocturne doesn't teach anything makes this one go either way.

Persona 3's design is basically simplified Wizardry in 3rd person.
You should really read about Wizardry, that game series indirectly lead to the birth of JRPGs.
Since you started playing SMT Digital Saga, I'll just point out that there are a ton of Hindu/Buddhist religious references, that you may not get (I'm a Hindu and was really surprised by it, because almost no game utilises that). So read up on them, they are fascinating.

And doing this after every video..., I can't imagine how much concentration and energy is required for that. buns is just great.

Totally agree with you on art style over graphics. I've heard a lot of people say they can't get into a game because the graphics are terrible which saddens me.
There are a ton of great games that have awesome fun gameplay or have a great story but because it doesn't have new cutting edge super charged high end graphics its not worth playing which is just silly and to those people who think this way you're are missing out big time.
I mean I can't blame them. If a game hurts my eyes looking at it, i ain't playing it.
many people are obsessed and even brainwashed by numbers in games these days. i can still play and love the visual style of many ps1 and even snes games but i couldn't stand looking at ff15 because it look so bland and boring to me. most people certainly feel the exact opposite just because ff15 has a much higher polygon count and resolution.
I prefer art style more than polygon count. Persona 2 is one of my favorite games and it doesn't even have 3D models. The combat system is good enough compared to P3/4/5, has arguably the best story in the series, amazing characters and an awesome soundtrack. But people won't play it because they need a PSP or Vita(which is pretty cheap nowadays) and they don't want to look at pixel art.
Art style is what makes graphics great. A gritty, realistic style looks terrible 100% of the time. Something more cartoony, like Ratchet & Clank, can stand the test of time.

I was lucky enough to buy “Nocturne” when it first came out and thanks to it I fell in love with the Shin Megami Tensei series! “Nocturne” is such an amazing game! Difficult as crap at times but soooo much fun! And such a good soundtrack! I would love to see Nocturne get a PSN release on PS4 or a remaster.

By the way , the only Secret Boss I had never beat it . Was the Protagonist of SMT : Nocturne . Which was the secret in Digital Devil Saga2 if I’m not mistaken. That Pixie almost make me break a controller.

Atlus kinda forgot SMT exists and focused on persona for a good while, in the direct mini they announced the remaster and gave SMT V a release date. Before the direct they didn't talk about SMT at all they just said that the game isn't cancelled.
In conclusion: indeed the game wasn't talked about much.

HAHAHA... Wait that's the most downer punchline I've ever heard.
All I was expecting was Dante to be a cool side character that inevitably joins your party. What I didn’t expect was for him and a skeleton monk to body the shit out of me. This made me feel like, either, the most depressed, or the most proud when fighting enemies. I never expected a boss to charm my healer into healing it to full health (damn you, Samael). The soundtrack either drew me instantly in, grew on me, or I’m not a fan of. Still arguably my favorite PS2 game, next to Silent Hill 2, Shin Contra, or Kingdom Hearts.

I've been on the fence about buying SMT Nocturne for a while now but your video convinced me to finally give in and buy it. I've never played an SMT game before and have only been a Persona "casual" as the elitists like to say. This mind set that some people have about SMT and Persona has honestly kept me from trying any since the community is snobby about it but seeing someone actually talk about an SMT game without the elitist undertones was a breath of fresh air!

To be fair, the persona fanbase usually is even more obnoxious than the SMT one, and the heavy emphasis on its dating/high school life simulator mode alienated more traditional megaten fans

It's great to see you finally managed to tackle this game, I know you'd been at it for a while, and the video came out great! While I personally don't think I'll ever be able to get into the more serious SMT game it's very nice to hear your thoughts and see that transition from the older stuff to the newer SMT games. Great work, Buns, you did a excellent job!

I can't speak for Xander, but one of the reasons I never did was because 1) I was never a PlayStation kid, so I didn't get access to a lot of those games, and B) I got tired of hearing from some of my high school acquaintances about the game in terms of spoilers and their SMT elitism nonsense. It's why I waited almost a decade to purge those thoughts and give anything from the series and it's spin offs a chance.
richard killface Thanks for making a lot of assumptions, putting a wall of text into my mouth, and not paying attention to a third of my comment.
Since you missed it the first time, I'll make things a bit more clear. In the past, I avoided games, because they cared not for ears of the unspoiled, and constantly made assumptions that I wouldn't get it or never finish the games because they're over my head, which was all in the past. Now that I don't remember any of the plot details from any of the games, I was able to play and finish the two Persona games that came out around that time, and have played more since. I'm also looking into Digital Devil Saga and the Nocturne as well. Less about control by them, so much as me wanting to play on my terms, completely fresh and new. As for the games you mentioned, I've played the first two Souls games and loved them, played the first two of KH, and said, "Fuck it!" when the games I needed to play were on so many systems, and was too much of a commitment to play for something I was lukewarm on. I like Nintendo system games in general, and play the occasional fighting game. Point is that I enjoy the games that I do and anything else I consume because I want. It's just that sometimes a lot of effort is need to make the experience my own.
My question to you: What exactly was the point of your comment, if you were so utterly and completely wrong?

I wonder if peeps will still call Nintendo "super family friendly" with Bayo 1&2 being ported to the switch (with 3 on it's way), Dark souls making it's way to the switch and the next SMT game coming out soon (as the follow up to the games that made a home on the 3DS).
Fun fact: when Platinum were designing the Nintendo costumes for Bayo they wanted to "cover up" more (to keep things cool with Nintendo) however it was Nintendo idea to reveal "more" in the end especially with the Link costume ;-).

Also, there are a slew of pretty violent games on both Fami and SuFami. Nintendo of Japan is pretty metal. Family friendly aesthetic was heavily pushed by NoA in particular.
Nintendo is and have always been pushing for a baby friendly approach, see how almost all its first party IP are colorful and child friendly. It is the third party game makers the ones that have historically pushed for more freedom until nintendo had to to simply accept to get more lax with censorship to not lose third party support to other emerging consoles.

Dianne Renard oh, I disagree with Nintendo always trying to be kid/family friendly. Look at the Earthbound/Mother series. That shit is dark as fuck. And the Metroid series. And a few of the Zelda entries, specifically Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. Fire Emblem is a pretty dark/mature series as well. Hell, two bosses from the Kirby series cry blood. There are Kirby bosses that literally cry blood. LITERALLY CRYING BLOOD. *CRYING. BLOOD. FUCKING KIRBY OF ALL GAMES.*
Oh, and the final boss of Earthbound resembles a fetus and was influenced by a false rape scene a child watched, but yes, we love family friendly Nintendo™

Metroid is the only ip somewhat mature it has as some of their entries had legit oppressing atmospheres and once a while creepy monster designs
I’m rewatching after the HD Remaster dropped. I got my own copy and I love the voice acting. It helped me connect to the characters and the events of the game more. Text on a screen only did so much for me.

This game got me through a very tough time in my life. Always happy to see it get some spotlight. :)
Yesterday, after 155 hours (more or less) of play time, special fusions, grinding, and stupid mistakes that resulted in rage-inducing game overs, I completed Nocturne. I got the True Demon Ending. As much as I do not want to spoil anything, do yourself a favor and make sure you have plenty of dis-binds (or sacred waters), excellent healing skills, and debilitate. And if possible, recruit Dante. He is one of the first demons you can get with decent Almighty skills and can hit like a train if speced right.
All in all, this was my first ever SMT game and despite the hair pulling frustration (and the slight back seat playing from my bf who owes the game) I had a fun ass time~ When I unlocked the True Demon Ending, I was on such a high, that I could barely calm down. This game will punish you...but when you conquer it, theres no better feeling~

@@lemonov3031 haven't played nocturne yet but even if p5 is more linear in some ways i get the feeling overall there are a lot more things to do in p5, even if most of it is scripted. i really wish all of the activities in p5 had their own mini game, like the batting cages and fishing.
Meh. Nocturne choices were pretty obscure sometimes. Made it hard to figure out every possible finale. I did the true demon ending though.
With Persona 5 being my first SMT game, it's amazing to see how many of the personas/demons have persisted throughout the series and how faithful they are in Persona 5 compared to their earlier-day counterparts.
As a PAL gamer, booting up the digital copy of Lucifers Call off the PlayStation Store and seeing both NTSC 60hz support in a niche PS2 game followed by the fucking Ubisoft logo made me nearly yeet my PS3 across the room in sheer confusion

Also Buns there is a very consistent way to avoid battles. It's called estoma. There's a merchant in Amala that sells a demon with all the avoidance spells.

the random encounters are literally the main reason why i loved asakusa so much, because there was almost NONE, it really felt like a lovely home to me, and that's why it actually hurt me what happened with it at the end...

Persona 5 and World of Final Fantasy really made me pay attention to my character stats, and any buffs that I could get. Seriously, when the enemies go up like 30 levels that's when you spend 2 hours carefully customizing you characters...and then die 200 times

I played it when i was 12, then later on in my life. To me it was a more interesting experience than FFX.
This game will be my favorite i think, i still have it even tho i don't have a ps2 anymore.
The other spin off you mentioned are also good (devil summoner raidou is really different and more story driven).
Last semester a group of my close friends and I played this game and democratically picked where the game went plot wise due to our philosophical opinions. We didn’t beat the game, dunno if we ever will, but boy was it fun. Especially since we all had different approaches to things, the bosses were easier than anything else in the game. We beat the Matador on the second try when it was supposed to be a pattern recognition exercise. Such an enjoyable and different game.
I seriously think you have power of influence and developers are listening to you. Nearly every game you've remembered has gotten a remaster and generated positive views for fans to request developers for remasters. So thank you anyway!
