I am from British Columbia, Canada which is synonymous with the Cowichan sweater. I even knitted one for a boyfriend decades ago. My late father had a Cowichan that I still have; it must be a century old and paper thin but so warm. How wonderful to see Dora Wilson in action. One of my nieces here in NYC is half Shoshone and when she was born twenty four years ago I had a wee Cowichan waiting for her. Thank you Ms. Wilson!
What a rich and very wonderful legacy of knitters. I am a beginner - self taught vey late in life, but I love it and am still learning something new each day. Thank you for sharing.
My late husband, George, owned his Cowichan sweater for many years. It was his favorite article of clothing. His nephew has it now, and wears it all the time in Saskatchewan. It is now his favorite sweater! It is the best of the best!
I've seen this lady on knitting videos. She has such a beautiful spirit and so much wisdom about fibers and her craft. I would love to learn more from her. Thanks for posting.
I love sewing and crafting..l even dip my toe in the shallow end of the pool when it comes to crochet and knitting. This is why I keep trying. But in all my years I have never been able to hold up something as beautiful as your sweaters. You are a master of your craft. Bless you for keeping all of us warm and dry with your gorgeous sweaters. I think I better stick to hats and scarves that aren’t too complicated. There is a lady in Whiterock on Marine Drive who has a knitting shop also. She has been kind enough to offer me some help with a cup of tea. She too is just a remarkable woman like yourself. I hope you are teaching your younger generations your gift so they can help fill your store for generations to come. Thank you for your inspiration
I lived in British Coulmbia for 30 years. I made Cowichan sweaters and loved making them. that was 20 years ago. I still have all my patterns and would love to make them again. But i can not find the wool. I know of 5 people just off the top of my head that would buy them. You have beautiful work. Thank you for sharing.
Love her voice and calm demeanor, love the artisanal quality of the garments, love the patterns and colours. I have ordered a vintage genuine Cowichan cardigan It wasn't the pattern I originally dreamt of, BUT I wanted a certified genuine one rather than one I wasn't sure about being made from the Cowichan people.
I was raised in Cowichan Bay and now live in North Carolina. Beautiful sweaters. Great quality. I met a man in NC with a Cowichan toque. He was surprised when I told him I knew where he got it. One of a kind.
back in the mid '60s I spent a summer in Cowichan Bay. I rode my bike up the hill to see if there were any kids I could strike up a friendship with. I didn't see any kids but a couple of ladies were sitting and knitting on the front porch of a house there. I stopped and talked to them, because my mom also was a knitter. But she made Norwegian sweaters. Even back then, when I could barely knit and purl, I was entranced whenever I saw anyone knitting.
Nice story, I’m an advance beginner in knitting and I love all ethnic knits from anywhere in the world. It’s amazing how much skill and talent goes into knitting a Cowichan garment and the Norwegian knits you mentioned . Best wishes from the U.K
That’s so beautiful I never learn but I learn crochet and I’m pretty good I make my own sweaters hats scarves mittens handbag and baby items and sold a lot 😬I learn with my mom God bless her soul I carry out thru the years and hoping to teach other before I pass on anyway thank you for sharing your beautiful sweaters 🥰😊👌
My neighbour Bus Matthews owned the Canoe store for awhile. I remember driving with him and his Son Ray, to pick up knitted sweaters on the reserve. He sold moccasins as well.
I love what you do, and those huge balls of yarn. You sell those?? I am trying to learn, I am excited to learn and maybe buy something from you. I definitely need to know where you get you yarns??? Please knit with pride, love that. I get so addicted to the hooks the way they slide through lol 😂
I live way down here in Central Texas. I am a Texas Longhorn fan. Is there anyway I could have one of these sweaters made with C Texas orange Longhorn and white
The symbols they use are pretty traditional and the charts are handed down through generations and closely guarded. You could probably find a knitter local to you to custom make you something like that.
Would it be considered cultural appropriation for an outsider to learn to make these as well? And I don’t mean to sell or anything like that- more in the context of a fiber arts historian
i am watching this wearing my Cowichan. I've had mine for 14 years and it has been my most favourite piece of clothing for all those years :)!
