Founded in 1861 on the banks of the River Clyde, Black’s of Greenock built an undisputed reputation for using quality materials and making durable products that last. Black's of Greenock merged with Vango in the mid 80’s embracing the similar ethos and build quality of the Force Ten Classics. Both have been synonymous with group camping for many generations.
Ahhh Thats what my soul needed today Paul. I did a 5 mile trek on Dartmoor, filmed a bit for the Cancer Research 100 pressups a day challenge then back to my van. Was feeling a bit "bleugh" but your film really fired me up again. I think we all loved your dailies but this is Mr M firing on all cylinders again. Great photography and just you, doing what you do best, being YOU. Thanks.
200 Banshee for Cadets and DOE, 300 for Adults, I'm only 5'8" and my 300 is damn near perfect as I carry bulkier gear, the youngsters can kip on the slimmer mats and so can get away with smaller/lower tents, nah...add 20/30lbs on and it's airbed not bubble wrap so will be a bit higher to start with sitting up, packing away inside, cooking...also for those with a small dog I reckon there's enough room in the 300 for pooch, so 300 offers more to more people, but for starting out as a youngster, without a doubt the 200 is the GOAT, but in a CB125 way, it's the starter bike that gave you the initial burst of experience...but a CB250 will get you to work far better when you're in your 20's.
I had the hurricane beta up until a couple of years back. Pitched in seconds and with the inner dropped, lots of room for a tall guy. Sadly the seams finally gave in...
This spring i bought a Vango Hydra 200, used, from the Vango outlet store, used it in a five day cycle camp, I love this tent and am planning a winter cycle camp this winter.
I bought a 200 many years ago it came with the door on the left after selling it I soon regretted the sale and bought another that has the doors right and left I absolutely love these tents ❤️
It's the GOAT for me because I sold loads back when I had my shop and I never had one warranty claim 😂 which if you're a retailer that's a win win product
Re: your tent pegs. Mine look the same, and I have solved the problem that they present, hurting our palms as we push them in, and possibly hurting our boots as well? I went to B & Q and bought a small and light plastic plumbers 'T' junction that is used to join plastic pipes together. I just push the vertical tube of the 'T' piece over each peg, rest the horizontal part of the 'T' piece in my hand and just push the peg into the ground. Result, no palm pain and no need to use my boots.
I use one of the rubber caps that go on the end of walking sticks - not LEKI or similar, wooden walking sticks, the kind you see OAPs using. They do the job great as long as you get the right size for the job and they only cost about a quid.
I’ve said it before, Vango is the most underrated brand out there. Loads of good performing, well priced gear that will last for years and years! Loved the video, had a really old school Paul Messner feel to it 👌🏻
Nice one paul . Another lovely video .keeps those of us who cant get out as much as theyd want ... excited to get out. Nothing macho; just the love of outside . Keep it up mate and good luck
Nice video Mr messner... I know it's not going to be too well accepted on here , but!!!!!,,,,, I don't think we should discount the old eurohike dome tents!... now they were really a tent of the people. Cheap as chips , easy to put up, durable ( if erected right), watertight. Yes they were heavy, but nearly everyone had one back in the day. Not just for festivals, many actually got carried home. You would see them everywhere.... sold in the millions . Take care out there.
Loved this one, I know you've been doing some different types of vids but for me it's your gear reviews within a walk/camp that I like the best. The longer the better.
Did all mu DofE's and scouting adventures 35 years ago in a Force Ten. I'd of loved one as light as this ha ha. My 40 year old Trangia is still going strong too :) Couldn't agree more Paul. Love it.. Richard BatMon...
On a recent Coast to Coast attempt, doing the high route, very near to where you were (On the path coming away from Haystacks, having climbed it in very wet conditions and lowering light, carrying 17kg), I was exhausted, wet and tired and I needed to pitch quickly to get myself out of a potentially hypothermic situation. I pitched my Durston X-mid solid 1P in about 2 minutes, just before the heavens truly opened up. It kept my dry and secure that night, so I could regroup and get myself off the mountain in the morning, from that perspective I will always have a soft spot for this tent, a GOAT hiking tent IMHO.
Always had a soft spot for Vango, first backpacking tent was the Vango Hydra and my only base tent which I still have and use is a Vango Force 10 with a orange cotton fly. Guaranteed to fire up a conversation. Did OK Paul the camera never shows the steepness of the terrain and hill fitness doesn't take long to reduce.
Nice camp Paul. As you've shown, the views up there are amazing, especially that bit when you reach the top of the hill and the Dale Head cairn, well worth the slog up from Honister. I did the same route a couple of years ago. I dropped down off Robinson and camped on High Snockrigg overlooking Buttermere. I did come back the way I came the next day and it was knackering.
The Banshee 200 is my hiking tent. It's great for Northern Ireland weather and feels at home in The Mourne Mountains. I love it and also get this satisfaction that its a Banshee. Its not on trend its an icon of British wild camping. It got the job done 10 years ago and conditions have not changed.
Thanx for the vid Paul, good to see you out and about again. Keep the vids coming. That looked a hard descent, nowt wrong with taking your time mate. 8-)
The Vango tempest 200/300 had a really big front porch. I have the 300 weighs just over 3kg but for two its still carryable. Nearly worn the groundsheet out in mine though!
I picked up a Tempest Pro 200 as first tent, every time i shop around for a 2nd i keep coming back to it. Easy to spend a long night in this tent vs a coffin ⚰️ or rustle up some grub in the porch on a cold night and lets not forget the ability to keep sleeping area nice and dry being able to keep all your wet gear up front. For me at least, cant be beaten.
I bought my Haglöf Twinpeak 2-3p tent in 1995 and last used it in 2022 when I hiked in the Swedish mountains with my son and two flatcoated retrievers. It is a tunnel tent perfect for 2 people and two dogs, but a bit heavy. For solo hiking, I have a Hilleberg Enan and a Nemo Dragonfly Bikepack 2-p depending on whether I'm in the mountain or in slightly more protected terrain. I like them all three for different situations.
I went for a Vango F10 xenon for my one and only small tent . Nothing wrong with them , pros are price , light weight , all in one pitch , built for British bad weather , space , and quality. I also use their sleeping bags especially when it comes to great down fill in the coldest of climates .
I have that exact tent. I've had it for about 12 years, and am only now considering getting something a bit lighter, and a bit more of a porch. I bought it in Sheffield GoOutdoors ❤️
i love Vango tents. I was brought up in Force 10's. My go to wild camping tent is the Helvellyn 200 which is bomb proof, I've been all over the Lake District with that thing. For next summer i'm looking at getting the Vango Heddon 100 maybe 200, trekking pole tent for the fair condition summer camps
I own and still use the Original Coleman Cobra 2RS on which I believe the Banshee was based. The Coleman, although inner pitch first, has 2 entrances and is somewhat wider than the Banshee. My Favourite Vango Tent of all time (I've owned 2 of them) is the Tempest 300 which is very roomy and has the most practical porch, especially in prolonged bad weather, with enough room to change out of your wet weaher gear before entering the inner.
Top video as usual mate!! As an expat(now live in Chicago)it really makes me miss home……even though I get to hike Colorado or Utah now the LD is hard to beat!
I have to agree Paul. Now I am older and better off I have a few high end tents but when anyone asks me for the best tent they could buy because they are just starting out, the Vango banshee is "ALWAYS" my answer.
I remember you mentioning a few videos back that you were waiting for the arrival of the GOAT tent and was beginning to wonder what had happened to it. I was expecting some amazing tent that was new on the market and I was very surprised when I saw what it was. I've never used one myself but it regularly gets recommendations in wild camping groups on FB and everyone says they are bombproof. My favourite tent is my Soulo and I have a 3-man Allak which I've not tried yet, but for price/weight/strength/space I think the Scarp 1 takes some beating.
Before I get too far into this I see the Paramo is coming out more now. I've just bought the Velez jacket but I've not had a chance to use it yet. You must rate Paramo so thanks for giving me the confidence to buy a none fully waterproof jacket that will hopefully be far more comfortable than my Gore.
@@PaulMessnerThere’s nowt wrong with bright colours, Paul. You might be glad you could be seen easily, one day. Beautiful views btw, glad I came along. Only 18 mins in at the moment. The notes are starting to concern me…..
Thanks for great video. I was expecting to do a similar walk with my dog this week. However he managed to injure himself badly enough to need surgery so had to cancel holiday. Really nice to be there in proxy.
3:00 - You'd be surprised mate. 🤣 Favourite tent for me would be the Vango Hurricane Alpha. Way back in the day it was the first upgrade we had from the glorious canvas Vango Force Ten Mk1&2's we used up to that point. The luxury of having something so "light" that pitched almost immediately and was still rock solid blew 20yo me away at the time. 41:00 - You handled that bit really well mate, the only thing I'd add is to say that it's absolutely OK to turn back from something that scares you. 99% of the time on the kind of routes we walk there's always another way down.
I like my Terranova Laser Competition tent for hiking in the mountains. It is lightweight, easy to pitch, got a decent vestibule, can handle wind and is big enough for me and my gear. The price is reasonable and the quality is good. I'd LOVE more space, a larger vestibule and for it to be freestanding, but then I wouldn't be able to get it up the mountain. So the Terranova Laser Competition is a really good compromise! 😁
I have a Vango Helvellyn 200 and whilst I haven't had it up on a snowy mountain yet, I've been impressed by its performance in wet and cold weather. I can't justify buying a Hilleberg or any other tent over £200 for wild camping in Ireland.
Great video and tent. Last year I wanted a cheap tent quick to do my first wild camp with a friend. And picked up a Vango Tornado 150. Thought I may only use it once then get somthing ekse. But it wired great and has some uneque old school design features I really like so going to keep using it. It wirks great.
I think my greatest tent was bought from a local independent retailer. It had a meah panel in the fly, on dry nights you could tie it back and look up at the stars. I can't remember the brand, the guy who owned the shop always stocked some more unusual items and brands. No idea what happened to the tent, must hve misplaced it in a house move or something. Shame, i often think about it, Ive not seen a tent like that since. Have some great memories, including the inevitable 3am scramble when unexpected rain blows in!
Vango Storm 200+ was my first tent, put it through hell and it took it no problem. Got it out after 15 years the other day and pitched it, must have put it away slightly damp as it was a bit mouldy but still working , although I think its as waterproof as a tea bag now.
Impressed you cooked in that “not ideal” position Paul. Even more you ate in that prone position without getting indigestion too! Must have been colder than you cracked on I reckon.
have one a banshee 200 we used to call them coffin tents. sitting up and cooking on a a bad weather day is no fun but the tent puts up with high winds and I have never not wet in one. I also have an omege (mango) 250. really like it, large covered area for cooking etc. well built and great in all conditions but a little heavy to cart up mountains but have done it and love the room. thanks for the video.
Paul Many years ago, walked the length of Newlands Valley to ascend Robinson....to carry on the hike along the tops to drop off Catbells....and eventually back to the car. I seem to remember it was a hell of a slog up Robinson.....have come up via cat bells along which seems an easier route....but maybe time has hazed my memory. I have the 2012 Vango Banshee 200 it is still in use although I changed it this year to the Wild Country Helm Compact 2 just as I am 72 and am not as flexible as I once was and find the Helm gives me a bit more kneeling/ head room. My Banshee has been on many a camp in the UK, numerous cycle tour camps in the Netherlands, Germany and France. Think when I got mine I paid about £80.00 as it was reduced from about £100. For that kind of money it is a fantastic designed sturdy 3 Season tent. Good video, great shots....Thanks for time and effort it takes to record, edit and put these videos out there....
Hear me out 😂. I’ve got a range of tents some expensive and some not, however to start wild camping I bought the OEX Hyena 2 and most reviews slag it for the noisy ground sheet or the poles but I’ve camped in wind, rain, and shine and it’s never let me down and all for £54 in the sales. I honestly think for price and performance it can’t be beaten The porch is a lifesaver when the weathers bad to cook in. The new goat! 😂
Last year, after being forced to retire due to cancer, i started looking for my GOAT tent. Fell in love with the Russian Bear Market Cuboid 2.2- unfortunately, Ukraine had just started and imports bans have forced me to give up on THAT dream....
The GOAT of tents is whichever one you have the best time in. I'd contend that Treedeep Outdoors has recently demonstrated that with his experience in a naff el-cheapo tent whilst backpacking in Spain.
This was the first tent I bought, and in 2012. I was in Kenya with the army at the time, amazing few months but came back and wanted to head up Kinder with my dog. Anyway almost 12 years later I took it up there again one last time last December. I decided to do a bit with my daughter, and was preparing the tent, it was leaking through the tub. Gutted, but i have ended up getting the Berghaus Brecon 2 and I'm hopeful that ill go out this year but I'm still healing from a nasty ankle break. Anyway, that tent is the bollocks and im keeping it in hopes that I can find a new inner because the outer is totally fine. That way once my daughter is a little older if she wants to she can take it out.
Just off for a hike on Dartmoor and wild swim, this is my afternoon treat when I get back to the van . Love the long content again Paul. (Using my ultra light winning rucksack)
Wow that seamed like a right scary decent Paul? I noticed when you were in the cafe that you do exactly the same as me with your auger packets, you put the top inside the long bit, thought I was the only one who did that? Keep up the great vids mate.
I tried to buy a Banshee 300 last year during the Black Friday discounts. The retailer showed it for something like €50. It turned out to be a code error and I recieved a thermal blanket instead. Got my money back!! This summer I faired better and purchased a Vango Blade 200 for €85. It will take the place of my Vango Lima 200, from blue to green and ali poles! Most trusted tent ever...Vango Force Ten although my 1988 Robert Saunders Spacepacker is legendary and still usable!
Another superb video Paul, thanks. I much prefer side access tents. Can you do some close up of the construction in future videos. It’s interesting to see what techniques the manufacturers are using to increase rigidity, durability and strength. 🙏🏼
@2:50 I don’t know Paul… My Mrs has to put up with this every day 😊. Great video…Classic Messner… Loved it… thank you ! The Banshee - The MG car of tents……Time for my old Banshee to come out again I think.. Cheers Mark
I would have loved a 300 but unfortunately my ground dwelling days are over due to illness so not much point buying one now. One of the reasons I love watching your videos Paul.
Sir Chris Bonnington used Vango Force10 on several expeditions. I cut my teeth on a F10 canvas tent 40 years ago. The banshee is a staple up here in Scotland still and you see plenty of them around. My best tents are lightwave/crux, i have several models but the X2 bomb and the T10 tunnels for me are unsurpassed for quality. Circa 300 post 3000ft camps in them and they have been absolutely flawless. Up there with Hille imho.
Damn. Great video. Looks serene in the mist. Really want to add the tent to my collection but is it roomy enough for anyone over 6 feet tall? If anyone could answer me, I'd appreciate it! Safe camping everyone
Whilst not a backpacking tent as it's too large for one, my go to tent for weekends away is a Vango Omega 300, which is a similar vintage to that Banshee and made of exactly the same materials, same colours etc. It was also earmarked for daughter's D of E expedition, but covid put the end to that. Thanks to Go Outdoors price match promise it cost me less than £100! Despite some hammer it is still in excellent condition, has no damage due to the quality materials and workmanship, keeps the rain and wind out and due to the vestibule is large enough to spend some time in if the weather closes. The current Vango range looks poor by comparison.
When you are goimg down a steep descent, you really should turn around and do it backwards. Its safer because if you slip youll just land on your tummy, you have better grip with toes rather than heels and its less intimidating not being able to see how high you are.
Thanks Paul another great informative video. Ive used a Banshee 300 more than any other tent - reckon as its tough light spacious in width and height and guys seem to deal with any winds ive seen. Alone I like my snugpak hooped bivvy, but if there are trees I always prefer one of my DD Hammock and a 3x3 tarp as sleeping suspended always feels better in the morning.
Great watch that Paul, it's also great to see the mighty Vango out in the field. I have the Vango tempest 200 that is fabulous, got it off gumtree after watching MCM outdoors with one. It's a great tent indeed but I also have a bobcat 1 that is fabulous but the sleeping pod is rather tight. I was looking at 3f UL taiji 1 for bit more room. What's your thoughts. Anyway, great watch and those views are fantastic especially the 1st peak.

Vango tents were originally made in my home town. The name is an anagram of Govan which is a working class shipbuilding district in Glasgow.

Thanks for great video. I was expecting to do a similar walk with my dog this week. However he managed to injure himself badly enough to need surgery so had to cancel holiday.
Really nice to be there in proxy.
Got the 300. Love it
There's a lot to be said for the feels of nostalgia or "touching grass" etc.
3:00 - You'd be surprised mate. 🤣
Favourite tent for me would be the Vango Hurricane Alpha.
What a view
Great trip, 👍🏻
Great video Paul, been looking into getting a Vango 200 myself over the past few weeks. Think i'll be making that purchase soon 👍
have one a banshee 200 we used to call them coffin tents. sitting up and cooking on a a bad weather day is no fun but the tent puts up with high winds and I have never not wet in one. I also have an omege (mango) 250. really like it, large covered area for cooking etc. well built and great in all conditions but a little heavy to cart up mountains but have done it and love the room. thanks for the video.
I still love and use my force 10 light weight (9lbs!) But my modern tent is a wild country helm 2. But the force 10 can withstand very harsh weather
Paul
Many years ago, walked the length of Newlands Valley to ascend Robinson....to carry on the hike along the tops to drop off Catbells....and eventually back to the car.
Good video, great shots....Thanks for time and effort it takes to record, edit and put these videos out there....
merci beaucoup l'ami. 😊
Missed these videos
Nice one Paul!
The GOAT of tents is whichever one you have the best time in. I'd contend that Treedeep Outdoors has recently demonstrated that with his experience in a naff el-cheapo tent whilst backpacking in Spain.
Cycled up Honister Pass a few years back. Surprised I'm still here to tell the tale.
Take your time, as you said, man enough to admit it too. We all have an Achilles heal. 😊❤
Samaya tents are on another level.
If there's no rips or holes you could reproof the bathtub with Fabsil
Just off for a hike on Dartmoor and wild swim, this is my afternoon treat when I get back to the van
It's a pity the current Banshees are a bright lime green colour.
🙏🏼
Good memories of my 2010 banshee 300. I seem to remember it was fly-first pitching, but you could just leave the inner attached.
I have more tents than I should, and the Vango Talas 200 is still my most used one. The tent I would trust most in West of Ireland weather.
I'm partial to a beer tent to be honest!
A few years before this tent was around it was the Vango force ten 2 man tents that our school used for the D of E but we did not hike with them.
I was in Buxton last week and finally had to admit defeat, the October temps are just too low for me. 😅
If you like like the old man, you will listen until he is finish speaking .
I would look until you are finished 😅
Mike.
Helm compact 1 solid tent
Beautiful views
my vote for GOAT goes to the Saunders Jetpacker, it predates youtube so doesn't exist in the modern conciousness
so much of what we take for granted in 'lightweight' mountain tents can be traced to Robert Saunders - UK tent maker
Absolutely brilliant tent. Great shout❤
When you are goimg down a steep descent, you really should turn around and do it backwards. Its safer because if you slip youll just land on your tummy, you have better grip with toes rather than heels and its less intimidating not being able to see how high you are.
Love the area around Buttermere 😉👍
Thanks Paul another great informative video. Ive used a Banshee 300 more than any other tent - reckon as its tough light spacious in width and height and guys seem to deal with any winds ive seen. Alone I like my snugpak hooped bivvy, but if there are trees I always prefer one of my DD Hammock and a 3x3 tarp as sleeping suspended always feels better in the morning.
Savotta mil tents 👌👌
had the 200 pro for years, only tent ill ever need
Great watch that Paul, it's also great to see the mighty Vango out in the field. I have the Vango tempest 200 that is fabulous, got it off gumtree after watching MCM outdoors with one. It's a great tent indeed but I also have a bobcat 1 that is fabulous but the sleeping pod is rather tight. I was looking at 3f UL taiji 1 for bit more room. What's your thoughts. Anyway, great watch and those views are fantastic especially the 1st peak.
Nice one Paul. Tek care 🍻😊
