  • In this video I head to the Santa Cruz mountains of California to camp and hike in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The park is the oldest State Park in California established in the early 1900's. I show you the charming adjacent little mountain town of Boulder Creek which was established in the 1800's as a logging town. Join me as I camp and hike among the thousands of years old Redwoods trees.

I want to apologize if you did not receive a notification for this upload this morning. I have no idea why that is. When I opened the video after publishing it, it said it was still processing. I uploaded and scheduled it several days ago so there’s no way the processing wasn’t complete. I’m frustrated to say the least as I work hard to consistently upload content. Obviously it was some sort of glitch. Thank you all for your support and for watching. It means a lot to me.

      No apologies, please -
Thank you for bringing some of the wonder/magic of our world into view. I just stumbled across your offerings unexpectedly -- serendipitously is, i guess, the word. Refreshing, for me, to see that forest and that bit of coastline. Thank you, Catherine.

This brings back some memories. I was motorcycle camping (and tenting) in mid-december 1979 and spent a night there. I was the only person in the campground. The good news is that I got a dinner invite. The bad news was that my dinner companion was a bear and I was the main course! I spent a couple of hours in a pit toilet type of outhouse. I figured that the odors would mask my human scent. The bear finally went away and I went back to my tent and had a good night's sleep.

Next time you’re in this area, check out a hike that starts and ends at the ocean at Waddell Creek, just a short drive north from Santa Cruz. It’s a leisurely hike (maybe 4-5 miles) that meanders along a beautiful creek and eventually takes you to a 60 ft waterfall. During rainy years, it can be quite impressive.

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures That is true....allot of trails are no dogs at all or leashed which is a substantial pain in the arse....and so is leaving them in a vehicle or penned outside while you hike....major concern on multi-day hikes...and theft might be a concern....I understand it would be better without the burden in most cases...hiking with a dog on leash could be a nitemare until he/she was experienced....allot of people just turn them loose after hiking for a bit...can be bad if they go after wildlife....stay safe !!

I’ve heard keep it Pinterest-y. That’s what people like…
What I like about Nomadic Fanatic is that he throws in some reality here in there… (And he throws that in for his longtime viewers). ;)
I would like to also see you maybe show us your website and some pictures that you have for sale…(maybe soon you’ll have your own hiking coffee cup or hat!!). There’s no harm in marketing yourself while your viewers, supporters, family and friends are watching!!!
If you ever need an atta-girl! You’ve got one from me!! You rock!!

It was fun watching you discover my wife’s home town of Boulder Creek. As you panned the buildings of downtown, she was telling me what used to be there, who owned it, etc. a real blast from the past. It’s a shame you didn’t have time to do the 15 mile hike down to the beach from Big Basin. Great camping and a waterfall. So much to discover in the Santa Cruz mountains.

This is THE best place to see the redwoods in the SF Bay area. Not crowded like Muir Woods, and big. And if you get tired of the fog and humidity, just a short drive south to Santa Cruz and Capitola. But don't tell anyone. We don't want it to get crowded.

Great video - as usual. The raccoons are vicious! It is such a lovely place. My son and I hung out there a lot when he was young. So amazing that it was set aside for all to enjoy.

Oh, how awesome!! We do not have trees like that in TN. We have lots of pine and hardwoods, but not those giants. Thank you for continuing to post such beauty. Blessings

Glad you enjoyed it Betty Jo. The redwood trees are native to the coastal regions. It’s actually the California state tree. :-)

Such a beautiful area! I need to get up there along with the Big Sur. Our camp in Redwood NP was always so wet too.

Yes very PNW. But I love the redwoods. But that damp cold isn’t always fun to slog through on the trail. But I enjoyed your views. Thanks for posting

    This park is amazing,
    Never enough time there!
Climate average is awesome all year!
If you're still in area of santa cruz, checkout Natural Bridges state park, they have a Monarch butterfly grove that can be packed full in winter! Plus a natural bridge that is almost gone...

I travel in my Lance with 2 senior cats and a Pekingese pup. Had to chuckle thinking of my Peke protecting me. Actually, he did scare off a guy at the side of my truck. I didn't realize he was there until my Peke lunged at him barking furiously. That poor guy jumped out of his skin and left. Animals alert you to what we dumb humans are oblivious to. This can give you precious time to protect yourself, or, as in my case, get rid of the intruder. At the moment one of my cats is telling me a mouse has moved on board in the truck bed. Will be baiting traps with peanut butter in the morning.
