Traditional JAPANESE Breakfast at Arai Ryokan + Japanese ONSEN TOWN Tour | Shuzenji, Japan

  • In my eleven years of traveling, I’ve visited some of the world’s most mind-blowing locations. I checked off another unreal travel destination on my list in January of 2019 when I had the pleasure of spending twelve incredible days exploring Japan. This island nation has everything I love about traveling to foreign lands: fascinating history, a rich and unique culture, kind and helpful people, and sensational food. Come along with me as I explore Japan!
My exploration of the prefectures around Tokyo continued as I woke up at the Arai Ryokan Onsen, a traditional, luxurious Japanese resort in the town of Shuzenji in the Shizuoka Prefecture. I enjoyed an amazing, multi-course meal there the night before, and now it was time for a traditional, multi-course breakfast!
The Arai Ryokan is a former traditional Japanese house that was converted into a hotel. My room was nice and toasty and had an amazing bathroom and a closet, and I slept on a futon that was brought to my room. I couldn’t wait to eat breakfast and start my day!
I was led to a room where breakfast was already set up for me and my new friend Haley from Girls Love Travel. There were thirteen different foods for us to try! I started with the seaweed, which was very nice and crunchy. There was some type of fish in it, too. It was really refreshing and not too briny!
Next was miso soup that was loaded with clams/ It was very nice! The clams are so small, you really have to know how to use chopsticks to eat them!
Our next dish was yuba, or tofu/soy milk skin. I added some wasabi to it. I didn’t love it, so I moved on to the next dish, a Japanese omelet, which tasted like it contained soy. I followed that with some amazing salmon, tofu, and baby sardines. The sardines were similar to the seaweed, but a bit saltier.
Next was a fish cake with seaweed, which practically evaporated in my mouth. Then I went with some squid, which was coated in a sauce that was alike a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise. Next was sardines with radish and rice, which tasted kind of like sushi!
Fried tofu stuffed with carrots was next. It sat in a pool of fish broth and was really good! Then I went with the pickled plum and pickled radishes. The plum had a seed in it and was very sour, almost like an airhead. I mixed the other pickles with my rice; it’s a great way to tone down the intense flavor.
The final dish was hotpot with tofu, vegetables, mushrooms, and an oyster. The sauce was soy sauce with chilies. The mushrooms were super crunchy and delicious. Then I added cabbage to the tofu and sauce. Then I finished up with a tangerine, which was sweeter than it was sour.
Then it was time to explore Shuzenji! Even though it was gray and raining like crazy, the town was beautiful. The houses are amazing, and I loved the koi pond and the gorgeous architecture.
Our first stop was the Shuzenji Temple, where I first cleansed my hands and mouth (and the ladle I used) before entering the temple, which was established around the 9th century. The main hall is so beautiful and dates back to Imperial Japan. The woodwork is stunning!
We continued through the town, which was super clean and full of traditional houses. We stopped at an observation deck, where we took off our shoes and climbed to the top. From there, we could see Arai Ryokan, the hot springs, and the rest of the town from there.
Then we visited a heated foot bath and the spot where a monk cracked open a rock and discovered a hot spring over 1,000 years ago! It’s right along the river, near the center of town. It’s hot there!
Then we saw the Kawara-yu foot bath before we followed a foot path along the river and crossed it to visit the bamboo forest to see it during the day. The shoots are 60 to 70 feet tall and there are about 300 of them in the forest. The forest is only 15 years old and contains a table at its center where you can lie back and see the shoots reach for the sky around you. Bamboo grows super fast, and can be up to 60-100 feet tall within just a year! This forest is so beautiful and peaceful.
I love visiting small towns like this!
I hope you enjoyed my traditional Japanese breakfast and Shuzenji town tour! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel!

It is pronounced as SAKÉ you idiot, NOT SAKHI. God knows why Americans hardly respect foreign languages, but it is NOT ok for foreigners to mispronounce English words. Yankee will try to correct you like hell if you mispronounce English words.

It is not good to eat rice in that way but I assume that he likes the taste of rice with soy sauce. I loved to eat steamy rice in the same way when I was a child because Japan was poor country at that time.

Soy sauce on white rice Noooooooooooooo! Remember the rice is to balance out the flavorful other dishes, One bite of other things, one bite of rice and repeat. Your guides should have explained this to you.

Been watching your videos and you're eroding views. A month ago, you had 40,000 views, 2 weeks ago, 25,000 and now can't get over 20,000. I also noticed there are less comments about your eating style. Probably only getting 5%of subscribers watching, is that normal?
