Oh man, do I remember 1991! What a year to be a gamer! I got my Genesis in 1989, so you better believe I was a Sega fan. I asked almost on a whim for a Snes for Christmas of 1991, thinking I had maybe a 50/50 shot at getting one. I asked both my parents (divorced) to kind of hedge my bets. That Christmas Eve, I dove into my presents and got a bunch of sweet Genesis games (I was incredibly happy). However, I did not get a Snes, and that was fine by me. Oh, but something very odd happened that night that never happened before. I found an Snes game (Super Castlevania 4) wrapped up with all the Genesis games. I thanked her and, while bewildered, told her I did not have an Snes. She played it off as a mom moment, and that was really it. On Christmas day, my mom took me to my father's house. I opened all the gifts and there were no Snes's in sight. Again, I didn't care as I was always grateful. When I went to put my presents up I my room I found a brand new Snes on my bed with 3 games! My mom follows me and lays the 4th one down and basically said, "gotcha!" Addendum- That Christmas vacation, my friends and I threw a Super 16-bit throw down that lasted for days! Between the 7 of us, we had access to just about every new game that was released for both. My father even made up scorecards for us. The Sega Genesis in our eyes took it but not without stiff competition. ;)
Well, looking into the ROMs and only ones I was missing was the 3 Saturn Games. Luckily, was an easy fix as I found all 3 ROMs from the same website. As for the the question, I like The Shining where you use an Axe on the door, then stick your head in and say, "Here's Johnny!" Oh wait, I'm thinking of a different Shining. 😉😂🤣 But seriously, I've not played any of these, but they look fun, and now I've got some to check out, so there we go.
Ahh, but do you have all three Scenarios of Shining Force 3? The west only got Scenario 1 (just simply titled Shning Force 3 in the West). That is just the first 1/3rd of Shining Force 3; In Japan they got Shining Force 3: Scenario 1, SF 3: Scenario 2, and SF 3: Scenario 3. But now, there's excellent English fan translations of Scenarios 2 & 3. (in fact you'll want the fan translation of SF 3 Scenario 1 as well; since they changed the ending of the Western version to wrap up the story right there, as they knew Scenarios 2 & 3 weren't getting brought over)
They are underrating Shining Force EXA really hard here, that game is absolutely solid. Speaking of, for anyone confused, Toma and Cyrille form said game appear in Project X Zone as playable characters... yes, heroes that only appeared in a PS2 exclusive are in a 3DS exclusive crossover game. And man, that score for Shining Force 2 is criminal! It's such a smooth and enjoyable game! As for me? My favorite is a nebulous tie between Shining Force 1, 2 and the most recent game Shining Resonance Refrain, though EXA could take the crown, too. It just depends on the day of the week xD
Awesome seeing the Saturn games ranked too highly. I actually enjoyed shining wisdom, it was a cool little adventure for what it was. QOTD, Favorite is also swinging force 3 with all three scenarios.
Shining in the Darkness. I played the game in the Sega Genesis Classics Collect and I'm really mad at myself for not giving it a chance as a kid. But then again I'd probably never would have beaten the game without a guide. Also shout out to Shining Renaissance which is basically a Tales of game with Shinning branding.
Having played through Shining In The Darkness twice this week, and its only Thursday, lol, i wanna say its by far the best entry in the franchise. Its a perfect 10/10 game. Period. None of the other Shining entries can even remotely touch it.
Project X Zone had characters from the Shining series, which is close enough for me. Also, Electronic Gaming Monthly considers it a Shining game (based on their EGM Compendium archive).
guess they never got around to Shining Force CD? I did see the game gear games though so I guess that counts? QOTD: of course I bring it up because SFCD was the main one I played back in the mid 90s when our family had the genesis and SEGA CD expansion. hope to revisit it someday either on real hardware or I'll fire up an ISO of it.
I guess I should have guessed they wouldn't have Shining in the Darkness if they didn't have the first Shining Force. Unfortunately I have only ever played those two first games, and I liked the first one more because I was not a very tactically minded kid back then. So Shining in the Darkness is my answer... though now I'm curious what grade Shining Force 1 would have, if the sequel couldn't acore higher than it actually did.
Project X Zone is neither a Sega game nor part of the Shining Series. That's like calling SegaGaGa part of the series, and claiming EGM was literature in the Shining Series, both because they have the most insubstantially tenuous fleeting connection via a passing mention. Hell, I'm part of the Shining Series. You're a part of the Shining Series. Now there are over 8 billion entires in the Shining Series. Yay!

On the technicality that this is a series about what EGM thought, that's acceptable. But as you've pointed out many times in this series, EGM might need to bundle up because they're a little bit shilly, and the frequency with which they made what could easily be interpreted as spurious claims would be a topic of note. Nice copy pasta reply BTW.
It's just more fun to include games where a series like Shining cameos. If I were doing a Daytona USA list, I would want to include Fighters Megamix. The more games I can include, the better, because it's really about what Electronic Gaming Monthly said back in the day.
Shining the Holy Ark! ❤️

That’s a criminally low score for Shining force 2. And please Sega do a re master of the whole Shining force 3 series🙏🙏🙏
Yeah seriously; Shining Force 3, all three Scenarios, need to be experienced by all jrpg / strategy rpg fans.
One of the very best of all time
Seriously. Keep them with the fast/predictive menu system that helped SF3 go way ahead of games like FFT.

Project x zone wasn’t a shining force game but it did have a few characters from it in game.

Wish they'd release a Sega Saturn shining collection 😦

Shining Force 2 ♥️.
Just wondering why we have Shining Force Neo footage in the Shining Tears segment.

6.8 for Shining Force 2 feels like a warcrime. Was the guy who reviewed it playing it on super for the first playthrough?

I hate when video game reviews use the term "cinemas"... So pretentious. 🙄
QOTD: None. I've never played this series. lol
What word would you rather critics use?
