19:25 - my dad is from Ireland and uses the phrase “dogs breakfast” and “dogs bollocks”b constantly. It means that something is bad; sloppy or just low quality. Saying something is the dogs anything really, I take as a pejorative. You’re videos are NOT the dogs breakfast. They’re very good so I happily eat them up. Happy new year!
25:32 - Tax-Mania (Mega Drive) I legit thought "Wait, there's a game about taxes AND it's super good? I HAVE to see this!" Oh, you meant the Tazmania cartoon. : P
Stonker of a list, Cy, this really was the dog's. (I sincerely apologize to any British person reading this). Some of these choices make total sense, Megaman, Castlevania, Sonic, the stone cold classics, but others... wow, they sure liked their sports games. Also, really weird to see a UK magazine rating an American Football game that high. As for my fave, that's a toughie. Mario World, Megaman 2 and 3 and Sonic are all favorites of mine, so I guess I'll give a cop-out answer and call it a tie xD
Channel 4 in the 80s and early 90s would show rather well edited NFL games (Super Bowl was live) to make it seem like constant action thus the sport had a fad popularity at the time. This made it so there was a market for a good game to do well.
@byronlaw6491 Ah, that's really interesting! As someone from the US, a lot of the little nuances from different time periods like that are kinda lost on me, so that's cool to know
@@HybridAngelZerothe NES also didn’t start to sell in any sort of numbers until 1990 when the console was bundled with the Turtles game. Turtle mania shifted units. Now this was annoying for me as I was that rare kid who had an NES (Mattel version called so as was sold by them) so had to wait a long time until the game was available outside the bundle. The master system was the console of choice until the Mega Drive.
QotD: Parodius. It's the series I return to the most, even playing the eye-gouging GBC recolor and the slow motion NES port of Da. It's just got more options (pun half intended) and charm than other shmups from the era. So many that tried to follow in its footsteps just do cute sprite replacements over a standard game. They have no sense of timing or real imagination.
Yeah, if they ended a review saying, "It's the bee's." My first thought would be Nick Cage screaming, "NOT THE BEES!" So this left me wondering if the game let the dogs out. 😉😂🤣 As for the question, I'll say a toss up between Super Mario 3 and Link to the Past, love both of those games.
I'd certainly compare Steel Talons on the Lynx to a dog's scrotum. I might even use the word 'bollocks', and a 'bloody' or two might escape. But I think the number of stars shouldn't multiply the number of frames per second. 1 star it is, then.
QotD - Mega Man 2, and at a very close second Super Mario World. Depending on how I'm feeling that day Mega Man 2 might be my favorite video game OF ALL TIME. ... Looking thru the comments here I've gotta say regarding sports titles I don't have a problem with them ranking them high. For example, I loved the Madden series on Super NES and I frequently played Tecmo Super Bowl and Madden 93 for several years before I moved on to other football games on other systems such as PC and Playstation. One of my favorite genres are sports and racing titles. Like I'll take an early Madden title from the 90s or 2000s any day of the week over any JRPG; even today. Different strokes for different folks I think. For some, sports games are just as fun if not more fun than other genres just like anything else.
Bee’s knees basically means really good. Our magazines were rather bonkers. EA Hockey is different from the US version (usually EA just put genesis carts in a pal box. No really the label just said Genesis) as it’s international sides not the NHL. Bollocks is considered a minor swear word so they left it out because of that. Dogs bollocks means it’s really good.
I wasn't sure if "basts" was British slang or a typo or what, so I just left it in. Game Zone didn't seem to care much about copy editing the capsule reviews, so I had to clean up a number of weird typos and problems.
Some sensible stuff on the list and some stuff i never heard of. That said double dragon on the nes 100% deserved to be on that previous worst game list. DD arcade is one of my fav games of all time so when i played that abomination on the nes i was pissed.
Last time i called these guys trolls.. Honestly, i am not sure because these guys are so interesting. Not only so many random gemes like castlevania 2 on gb, immortal, hell even calling sonic on Game Gear as the best version. But then we have games that im sure everyone would agree with.
Super Mario Kart was a slip-sliding mess of pixel soup that was overrated due to the original ideas and charm behind it. Seriously, I had more fun racing through fog on the 2600, back in the day. Back way before the N64 turned fog into a mark of shame...and redeemed Mario Kart.
That's a common issue with these kinds of lists and retrospectives. The critics are overly impressed with the big advancements in sports games from one generation to the next, as the added tech allows them to make the sims more realistic. However, a few years (or decades) later, and those sports games have been completely overshadowed by newer, better, more realistic versions.
@@DefunctGames As a person who loves sportsball real and in game form (yea not real gamer i know) see why they would be impressed. You have too look at the games as they were then, and back then they looked, sounded and felt amazing to play. Of course new more more advanced games will overshadow them, but that's true for all games. People love to parrot that old 8 and 16 bit games still hold up against modern offerings but let's be honest most em don't (yes even some of the "all time classics").
@tical2399 I think that sports games age differently than most of the other games we talk about, especially the ones on this list. A typical platformer or action game (like Super Mario World or Mega Man 3) isn't overshadowed by advanced technology, as most of those games and franchises evolved into something different over the years. The run 'n gun action action game of the early 1990s is now a first- or third-person shooter, which might not scratch the same itch. As such, it's easy to go back and enjoy Contra or Gunstar Heroes, because technology didn't make them obsolete. The genre slowly shifted into something different over the decades. You might be right that some classics are overrated and don't hold up to games released today. I am not one of those people who says that modern gaming is bad and everything good came out 20+ years ago. However, we need to acknowledge that a lot of these games remain fun because of how the genre evolved over the decades. Super Mario World wasn't made worse by the release of Super Mario 64, as Super Mario 64 turned the platforming genre into something new and different.
@@DefunctGamesI see by your comment that we disagree on the issue. What I'm saying is that games like SMW, Contra 3 etc HAVE been overshadowed by newer tech and don't hold up today. I'm 45 now so i was right there in the nes mania and the 16 bit era going forward so i got first hand love for lots of those games. That said I tend to be unemotional and not a nostalgic person so looking back at some of the "all time greats" like SWM and many others they don't hold up. I boot plenty of games up on emulator and play for a few mins and I'm like" yea this aint it". I can't continue to play SMW when it's been put out to pasture by games like Celeste, Holow Knight or hell even mario wonder. Almost any game a person can name I can find a better modern game that advancements in tech have rendered obsolete.
@@tical2399 I'm 49. Don't worry, I know age is a bad way to keep score. I just wanted to add my perspective because I used to share yours. But I don't understand that perspective anymore. Celeste and Super Mario World scratch two very different itches. The first is as kind as a meat grinder can be. The second is a playground that begs you to explore it. Celeste is about finding the right answer, Super Mario World is about finding the right questions. Yeah, I think Mario's sprite suffers from questionable color choices, and there's the usual slowdown issues. The game needs a lot of nostalgia to ignore all that. I wasn't a fan when it was new. But it has restraint. And imagination. And a team that can explore the many shades between the rigid "baby mode" and "Player 1 genocide" limitations that too many modern games fall into. It was one of the most rewarding games I played this year. I haven't played the other games you named, so yeah, I can't argue there. But even if they do improve, I doubt very much they replace. It just means there's more good games in the world.

That Desert Strike review was super racist. Thing is, they probably confused Arabs with the Welsh.
