Their are a lot of guys out there that are good at painting figure's like yourself, but you are the best at explaining step by step detail's that a new model maker/figure painter can understand. You have certainly made figure painting a lot less daunting for me, well done and keep these great video's coming as they are much appreciated.
That really means a lot! I try very hard to make painting as fun and accessible to modelers starting off as its so much enjoyment to be had once the fear of trying is gone! Its very heartening to know my efforts are having an positive effect!
Those plastic kids/childrens bags of 'Army men' (nationality matters not) make great inexpensive test/practice subjects and are around 1/32 scale ish if I remember right...food for thought. Just wash them real good with an old toothbrush or such before starting painting. Sorry Shane I just can't stay away from this video...awesome, awesome, awesome. Very inspiring mate!
Michael Slack Yes good idea! Also, lots of old figure kits out there, for cheap. Not to mention, all the figures in the 'spares box', left over from builds.
Hi Shane I have just been watching your video very good, just one question what was the first colour highlight you used after the base coat on the video it jumped and I couldn’t get what colour you used. Many thanks
I'm a time served AFV modeller but have always kept away from miniatures as they end up looking like a pantomime dame! This video has been a really good introduction in how to paint good looking faces. Thanks!
This video makes painting a face simple and easy to understand. It shows how the face slowly evolves as you add in each layer of paint. It should give people the confidence and motivation to try their hand at painting figures. Great work! A 'decent' figure will make a model look so much better and if people just stick with it, their figures will get better and better.
Thank Shane I do (or want) to paint some figures for a tank I am building. Still scary but you have been a great help to giving me a clue on where to start
thanks Scott, the trick with painting faces is just take your time, resist the urge to use heavy amounts of paint when doing your layers. Thinned paint over several layers is your friend when it comes to painting faces
Dear Mr Smyth Your protestations about being inexperienced I'm afraid are falling on deaf ears I've lived in West Limerick far too long to know when wool is being pulled. You are a master of your craft and a master of your art. I'm embarking, on a project that is dear to me and will require a skill set that I don't yet possess so please keep up the good work I'm hoping to capture a little family history in diorama form which I hope will be important for future generations. Many thanks for your great work and fine examples MrD53
Shane, since I’ve returned to the hobby your videos are by far the most interesting and informative. I have thoroughly been inspired and motivated by them. Thank you!
very cool, its fun to watch. U make it easy for people to learn how to paint figures. I can paint tanks, uniforms, animals, and so on, but faces always use to drive me nuts so thanks.
great tutorial Shane, also very well explained on the colours and their usage and consistency top stuff bud looking forward to the next video kutgw BTW do you add an eight O'clock shadow to your figures 😊
+Faron Adams thanks Faron, I sometimes do put stumble on my figures though sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, normally I use a glaze of neutral grey to do this
Thanks for taking the time to film this Shane. It can't if been easy, but is much appreciated and a great resource. . Very community spirited mate. Nice one
+Armour Empire thanks Mark, its good be able to share with little knowledge I've got as anything to help and better our communities enjoyment of the hobby is worth all the effort :)
Thanks Terry very happy to hear that you found the video helpful, I have more figure tutorials in the pipeline so stay tuned ! Also welcome to the hobby !
Good video. Quite helpful. Not that I paint figures I really should have a go. I notice a few thumbs down yet they don't , like so many other videos, leave a reason why. I suppose they are the real experts and can do it with their eyes shut. Thumbs up from me 👍🏻
you should really try give a figure a go, they are not as bad as you think to get a good result! ya can't please everyone I guess when it comes to dislikes
I just bought yesterday the AK Interactive Gen 3 acrylic flesh and skin set. Really enjoyed your video, your explanations have given me some good tips and confidence to step into painting figures. 😊👍
Shayne who makes most accurate to size 1/35scale figures with good detail in your view. Just bought kits from China their 1/35scale sizes seem to vary. Just getting into this again and lot of research and advice needed. Many thanks N
so when it comes figure sizes in 1/35 the portions can vary a lot depending on the company. Tamiya are traditionally seen as being a little underscale or at least very slight in build, though newer figures are more in line with proper 1/35 portions. Miniart, Dragon, Masterbox are very close in portion with Miniart and Dragon being the most detailed in plastic
Good video I've just used this as I painted the faces of a couple of Germans I'm working on now. Didn't quite turn out as good as yours and I didn't have the right flesh colours (only have Vallejo dark flesh so was lightening it with white for each highlight shade) and didn't have the cheek glaze either, but I'm quite happy with how they've turned out
Shane Smyth - scale models I'll have a look 👍 will probs have to buy online as there's only one shop in town that sells Vallejo but they don't have a massive selection
Hello Shane it's been awhile last time was tamiya spitfire I've been looking for a video on painting faces this answered all my questions I remembered you did a Christmas Battle of the Bugle or you might have called it Ardennes 1944. not sure of title but it was great one question what size paint brushes are you using ? as always enjoy your posts stay the course Bruce
Hi Bruce! that Spitfire was a little while ago indeed! Welcome back. Really happy to hear that my face painting video made sense, as it can be a tricky thing to explain clearly :) I think your recalling Adrennes Week which was the Christmas Special for 2016/17. I am hoping to return to the frozen forests again this year for another Christmas Special for watch out for that. As for the brushes I use, they are all from the Winsor and Newton Cottman range, they are very good quality brushes and my favorite for figures. As for sizes I tend to use a no.3, no.1 and no.0 as well as a no.00 for very small work such as eyes ect
Glad to be of help. There are so many different ways and styles of faces and skin and it can be tricky to figure out where to start. Best bit of advance I could give is just to experiment over a few different figures and see what suits you best. You will find after a couple of attempts, that start form own method and style that suits you best.
Couple of things Shane. I've got Panzer aces paint in the same colour and the base coat is vallejo Iranian sand. I have also tried using a glaze medium on the first flesh coat. What seems to happen is when the paint is in the wet pallet it seems to start splitting after a while but ok when mixed back up. Also what is your final glaze coat ? I've had a go had a go with vallejo flesh wash but went overboard to say the least. Looked like a burnt face !! Also if any of your followers out there need a small hint for the plastic figures, if you cock it up like I've done many times and still do, you can always strip the paint off with mentholated spirits and start again.
if the acrylic is splitting then its most likely that the paint is over thinned perhaps drop the glaze medium or reduce the amount of medium and water. I would probably drop the glaze medium and just thin the paint with a tiny amount of water as it will make the paint go translucent when thinned enough. the last glaze in the AK set is known as the cheekbone glaze which is reddish wash or glaze to give the cheeks of the face some warmth, the flesh wash from Vallejo and Citadel will do this job too. But remember only apply it to the sunken aspects of the cheeks and less is more hope this helps Shane
Shane Smyth - scale models yes thanks. I'm sure I will get there eventually . Just wish they'd supply these heads with sunglasses so I don't have to do the eyes 😎
Coming in late to your series of painting tutorials, but just got to add my thanks. I'm relatively inexperienced with acrylics, so it's not just the basic techniques that you're brilliantly illustrating, but all the incidental tips on using the medium that I really appreciate. Great videos Shane. Thanks for your efforts.
Shane, thanks for a really good tutorial, very well explained and filmed. Each of us can learn from each other, my first faces all need glasses to correct their extreme problems lol, now I can see where I went wrong ! Another thing, thank you for no loud back ground music which ruins many tutorials.
Shayne I have painted some German 1/35 scale figures and added to much wash and nuln oil thus making the figures to shiny please advise best recovery. N
Honestly some of the head sculpts make people look like Cardassians with the exagerated neck scuplts that look like neck ridges even on a figure in a relaxed pose.
Vallejo has several flesh sets very similar to AK's offering, If you check out their Panzer Aces range they have three flesh colors that would be prefect for most jobs
It seems AK don't have that full range of fleshes available anymore on their site.. but there is a (rather expensive..) Abteilung 502 set of Flesh oil paints. Have you tried those? Would they be much different to work with do you think?
I've never tried using oils for flesh tones, they would be a little different in terms how long it will take for each layer to dry though would allow you to blend layers more easily
You say to practice painting eyes on old figures you don't mind sacrificing - I think that applies to all of this, really! And if you try painting a figure and it doesn't go well, you can drop it in automotive degreaser for a few hours and start again from a clean slate.
Hi Shane, good tutorial, thanks :) Just about plucked up the courage to add some figures to my models, this will help a lot:)Slightly off topic and because I know you love your Sherman's, which kit would you recommend, I'm an ok modeller so complexity is not a problem, but detail is important, thanks in advance.
ah nice to see your about to take the plunge ! Figures become easier with practice so fear not, as for the Sherman Auska or Tasca would be best in terms of detail followed by Dragon :)
An informative vid, thanks. Just last night I was having a go at painting a figures face for the first time in 1:35. Your timing couldn't have been better
+Shane Smyth rfeeney.blogspot.com/2015/11/figure-painting-miniart-usjeep-crew-mp.html This is the one I was working on. Trying to find the old muscle memories from painting minituresin my youth

thanks mate, its a video I need to revisit as I feel a follow up painting tutorial with my new studio setup might be of more benefit to people as well as new little tricks I've learned since I did this video, as I am always trying out new things and to improve my skills
+Shirine Akther I live in Ireland so I can't help you there, but the head is from an Alpine set so best bet to just google US model shops that sell Alpine
Im trying to launch a figurine startup at the moment which requires 2 types of figurine to be painted in several different colourways. To allow myself a bit more flexibility in terms of range of stock im importing the pvc moulds and hoping to either hand/spray paint them myself but i have no experience of doing it. where do you source your supplies and if i want to paint small areas of the figure a different colour which type of artist tape is best?
not sure much of help I can be here, mass production of figures is a little outside my skill set, for my airbrushes I get them from an Airbrush supplier from Scotland called Air-craft, as for tape I would use tamiya tape, but for mass production it might get pricey, what kind of figure are you trying to produce ? Classic Tin Soldier style ?
Thank you, been looking for a good video tutorial for ages, painting faces on figures is my biggest weakness
thanks mate, really hope the tutorial helps !

Hi Shane I have just been watching your video very good, just one question what was the first colour highlight you used after the base coat on the video it jumped and I couldn’t get what colour you used. Many thanks
The first Highlight colour used is AK Light Flesh
Super video, wish I saw this before making several Freddy Kruegers Thanks.

Thx for tutorial Shane, can you share color codes with using order?
Enes ÇATAL can't think of the codes off my head, but they are AK base flesh, light flesh and highlight flesh
Ok like tank modulation order from dark to light I think, and maybe flesh wash before last light. Thx again ;)
Enes ÇATAL same principle indeed
These figures are actually tiny. I admire so much guys who are able to paint even EYES in this scale. 1/16 figures are so much easier.
Thanks mate. A very useful video.

thank you Angelo ! very glad the video helped you out!
Thanks, Shane.
Your confidence is contagious.
Rock On!
thank you very much!
did you prime this figure, Shane? or do you generally prime your figures?
Yes as I general rule I prime all my figures in this it was with vallejo surface primer grey if I recall
Thanks for the reply!!

Shane quality, what vallejo paints would you use on face painting.
Vallejo has several flesh sets very similar to AK's offering, If you check out their Panzer Aces range they have three flesh colors that would be prefect for most jobs
Outstanding just the video I've been looking for
Hope it proves useful :)
Great job Shane!, always tough getting convincing faces, they can make or break a good diorama
very true a well painted face can make all the difference !

Hmm :) I've just bought the AK, I think $27 AUD
I bought mine from Amazon a couple of weeks ago no problem after watching this tutorial . Great set.
Great video, Shane...keep'em coming...

Thank you Shaun!
Yess I will agree you explain your technique in a most understandable manner.
Nice video. I have subscribed. Thanks for sharing as I can use the education.
no worries Tom, glad you found it to be help my friend :)
Shane will these steps work for plastic figurine faces?
yes it should work just fine
Great video, thanks. It gives a really good process to follow and I'm sure it will improve my face painting. Cheers
glad to be of help mate !
great tutorials very informative and easy to understand for the newbie here thanks again
thanks Alex glad you found it useful !
what primer do you use? I've painted resin heads with AK Face paints but they come of when I handle them.
I use vallejo primer, did you wash the resin heads before you painted them ?
Shane Smyth ah no I didn't do you recommend washing up liquid and presumably cold water. I'll by some primer too.
I would recommend using hand soap over washing up liquid as the latter has oils in it will replace one set of oils with another
Do I have to use an airbrush for the first coat? Great tutorial by the way.
no you can use a paintbrush for all of this if you wanted
It tamiya paint bad? Because I've never seen a full tamiya mini figure paint
Tamiya isn't the best paint for brush work it sprays very well though
Shane Smyth - scale models the only bad thing is I use it for brush painting
if it works for you then no reason to stop using it :)
Nope. I allways use it with a bit of thinner it's great!
theres better paint on the market made for brushing.
Really nice results! This is perfect for my level of capability..simple but nice! Thanks for your efforts!
no worries Steve glad that it was of help mate :)
Bring the figure closer to the camera then maybe we could see all the details like Jason Jensen trains does

Question did you have to add thinner to the base coat or was it stright fron the bottle?
if I recall correctly I added a drop or two of thinner and sprayed it at high pressure
Why no primer? Most of the video's here use primer.
Looks like he's already primed the head beforehand. It's a given to prime before painting.
hey Mike, yip this was primed with Vallejo Surface Priming Grey I must have forgotten to mention in the video
it was indeed well spotted, I thought I mentioned I primed it in the video but have forgotten too
thanks sir,I am going to try your technique later today, was not sure about priming first.

To allow myself a bit more flexibility in terms of range of stock im importing the pvc moulds and hoping to either hand/spray paint them myself but i have no experience of doing it. where do you source your supplies and if i want to paint small areas of the figure a different colour which type of artist tape is best?
I am subject to an moq figures of 1000 so instead of ordering that in in the one colour it would be better to spread it 10 ways
not sure much of help I can be here, mass production of figures is a little outside my skill set, for my airbrushes I get them from an Airbrush supplier from Scotland called Air-craft, as for tape I would use tamiya tape, but for mass production it might get pricey, what kind of figure are you trying to produce ? Classic Tin Soldier style ?
