Kibler kits are something truly special.
I put together a Woodsrunner and just got a SMR. I may have a third crate coming in my future.😉Your praise of Kiblers is not overstated. They’re an excellent company to do business with.👍🏻

Thanks for watching! I could not agree more.. I searched for years for a kit with very high quality components, choice of wood type and engineered to a high level. I found that in the Kibler kit and anyone can have a rifle that looks like it was professionally built with just a little effort. Now just to find time to work on my kit!

I’ve been evolved in BP since the early 90’s and even built a CVA Kentucky long rifle kit years ago. But I’m glad to see someone of your caliber not afraid to say you are new to this. I plan to get one of Jim’s kits soon and I will be paying a lot of attention to your build vids... I’m a retired pipefitter welder and this is just what I needed ! 🤔🤗🇺🇸
Steve, I’ve been involved in BP for about ten years but have never built a kit rifle. Complex electrical problems / troubleshooting are no problem.. I have much less confidence with this new kit. By time I get started, we will end up working on our kits together!
I have cut dovetails and built a couple of stocks from scratch, so i’ve been there and done that . I just wanted a rifle that wasn’t so tedious . So I bought a Kibler southern mountain rifle . I can relax and concentrate on the finishing work, and have something to be proud of when it’s finished .

Good video, wise to have purchased the additional parts and wood for practice and backup, Jim certainly has taken a traditional design and integrated the technology of today into the process my opinion is its the best most satisfying kit available to the person wanting to have a flintlock long rifle.

Wow, I haven't made a flint or percussion rifle in ten yrs. I bought them from Chambers, Cabin Creek, Pecitonica, and when I bought all of the up grade wood etc. the kits would be over 1K ea. except Pecitonica. This guy that your buying from I have never heard of him,but he sure does a lot of the work for you. Very nice kits! crisp,clean cuts and as I said before the kits look very high quality and very little work to do. Your going to have a lot of fun. It's addicting and after you make one Ya got to build more. These make great winter projects.
Michael,. I agree that the Kibler kit is very well thought out. For my first kit I wanted high quality parts and ease of assembly. I hoping that once I'm done with this kit, I can follow your footsteps into more difficult builds. Thanks for watching..

Is there enough wood for light carving?
Jim has done some carving on his rifles. www.jimkibler.net/uploads/6/1/8/6/61869925/4533133_orig.jpg and I’ve seen some other examples done by some very talented craftsmen.

Hi Steve.. I did hold off for quite a while as Jim was not making the Colonial rifle meet (plus I had to save up for a while). When I placed the order, it was almost three months to the day. Thanks for watching! Hopefully I can get started on the kit soon.

Kibler rifles are absolutely superb. There's only one disapointing thing is integrated lugs for pins on the barrel that's not hc althogh it's easy to fix
The integrated lugs are a superior design, as they do not weaken the barrel.... though not “historically correct” neither is Jim’s production methods.

@@completepete, I ordered a Southern Mountain Rifle in February. I received it may 15. So far, all parts fitted and then taken off again for finishing. I have the ramrod thimbles, butt plate and triggers finished with brass blackening liquid. I just finished polishing the trigger guard today. It, the screws, the lock and the barrel all need polishing and/or the blackening solution. The stock I have sanded and after whiskering it, am ready for the finishing once I can get to a borrowed heat gun. Yep, kind of a long process, but it has been worth it. Very much worth it. Good luck on your kit.

I have a mountain rifle ordered i was so hoping jim included the tap and correct size drill bits, guess the sizes will be in the instructions, thanks for the video
If anything, it will be an 8/32 tap with the #29 drill bit. I purchased both from Mcmastercarr.com

Technically, yes but they only charge you once and break out the lock cost on the office end.
Nice looking kit. I'm outside the box on the rest. I'd be doing a Tung Oil finish with polyurethane finish coats. Make that grain pop! Next, sorry guys, I'd plate the brass and steel parts.

What do you do with the packing crate when your rifle is finished? Because I should think that with a bit of work, a couple of hinges, a handle etc, it would make a fine rifle case? 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

David,. 💯 This is the time. If I can do it, you can do it for sure! I believe there is no better kit on the market that is of this high quality, let's you pick your wood species and quality of wood. It's taking me forever to get mine done but if you get one, you won't be sorry.

You sound a lot like me, as far as not feeling comfortable trying to cut tennon dovetails and drill pin holes in the stock. I have drilled the pin holes one time, and did get it done, but it wasn’t pretty! Lol
I want a Kiebler kit so bad but just haven’t convinced myself to spend the money.

Craig, I agonize over every step, maybe it keeps me from rushing. It took me quite a while to save up for the kit and I'm happy I made the decision. I'm planning to film as I go, if at least to show that anybody can do it. I'll let my wife know if she is looking to make a change, she's got options!
@@completepete yea, if I had or do spend what those kits cost, I gonna be scared to even start. I’ve put together 4 of the cheaper kits, Traditions, Lyman, and Pedorsoli but the Kieblers are in a higher category. I believe they are worth every penny though
I put together my first flintlock kit in 2020. I did a smoothbore with an octagon to round barrel with no rear sight. So I only had to do one dove tail. Stock had a lot of inletting done but I'll tell ya it was more work than I thought going in. Now I'm looking for a rifle and so glad Jim is making these kits. I can get right to the finishing work without all the rest (get to shoot sooner). Just have to get the financing together 😆

Thanks.. I'm looking forward to putting it together. I'm hoping to film each step as I go. The knives are something I purchased years ago to work with our Boy Scout Troop. The boys were getting bored tying knots so we started some knife/tomahawk throwing with great success.

Not a gun buff myselfe (live in sweden) but 875$? Is that really correct? I was watching the entire video thinking what bank i would need to rob to afford this kit. As i understand it, it does fire once finished? If the prize is correct i can tell you, as a model kit builder, you get insane value for the money.
Thanks for watching! I believe it’s $875 for the rifle and $200 billed separately for the lock. The rifle does fire and is supposed to be extremely accurate. I had saved for a couple years while I looked for a kit with the highest quality components, barrel and wood. I was fortunate to find everything in one place with this kit.
@@completepete The inletting alone is worth the price of the kit (from someone who started with a raw stock and regretted the endless hours of work)

Bill, cold blue rubbed back was an option, along with Kiblers French Grey coating. Jim is now using the black coating from JAX called “JAX Black” which I’d rub back to a grey color. Lots of uncharted ground coming up for me!
Do you use both tannic acid and iron oxide for super dark look to it? Thanks for the video.
Hi Hank and thanks for watching! Yes sir.. you would use an application of iron nitrate and then the tannic acid powder to get the dark color. Jim did mention to me that I should keep the iron nitrate and tannic acid out of the barrel channel to avoid a chemical reaction with the steel.

Hi Andrew and thanks for watching! I don’t think much woodworking experience is needed.. you only have to watch my videos to see that! Not knowing your skill level with tools, I can’t say 100% that there might not be a small challenge or two but there are some pretty knowledgeable folks building the kits that will offer any advice you might need. Heck, you can most likely get Jim Kibler on the phone if needed. The best way to build this rifle is to take your time and plan out each step before doing it. Good luck with you project and stay in touch!

kiblers are super high quality but might not be in everyones budget. you can get a traditions kentucky rifle kit for abt 250
For sure Tyler. I’ve never owned a new black powder rifle before, always bought used. The Kibler is my first and I did have to save up for quite a while. I’m still puttering around assembling it but the quality of each component is top notch.
@@completepete cant go wrong with a kibler! their wood is top notch and quality from the factory in the kit is unmatched. traditions are nice to learn on and can make really good rifles if you put the work in. my plan is to practice on a couple of them then get a kiblers to go all out on like you did. cant wait to see the finished product! my favorite part is watching the staining of the stock

What kind of maple is the stock made of? No one seems to get around to mentioning what kind of maple it is.

@@completepete There's a big difference between Red Maple and Sugar Maple. Look into it.
I agree for sure.. just saying that red maple and sugar maple are the primary species. I’d prefer the red maple because I like the look of the curl. If you need detailed information call Jim’s shop at 330-551-5844 and I’m sure they can answer any questions you might have.
If that is the option he has I'd opt for Sugar Maple being a hard maple over the soft Red Maple. If looking for character I'd pick Box Elder.

Read up on tempering the tamping rod/stick. (Kerosene and PVC pipe) it helps you not brake them. Check with Dixie Gun works.

I sold all my guns some years ago to avoid confiscation and to help finance getting out of
canada. My dream is to own and build one of jim kiblers rifles someday,( once i can make my escape ) you seem to be very detail oriented and have high standards like myself, please show more of your build.

Well Andy, I find cynicism, bitterness and smart-ass-ness to be desirable qualities in my friends. I will post my progress, though it will be a slow process as I tend to agonize over every step. I didn't do enough research and nought a pedersoli kit for $715 with 2 extra flints. I'm disappointed with my pedersoli in that hardware came pre mounted but not all by a craftsman.
Edmund, the Pedersoli is one of the best production rifles from what I understand. Sounds like the fit is a bit off on your rifle.
I think I’d shoot it a bit and keep it in great shape. Pretty sure you can get most of your money back out of it if you wanted to invest in a Kibler rifle down the road. Stay in touch.. I’d like to know how you make out with your pedersoli.

It came preassembled so that the inlaid parts are fit but not totally seated. The brass parts came mounted with 9 steel screws and some exceedingly tight and heads partially stripped. Printed instructions are scanty about 1 page. Most brass parts are raw from the mold. I would never had guessed how much has to be filed off and sanded to make into golden mirrors. The lock appeared nicely inlaid but there was a little black powder grit insudecthe action indicating the lock needs more wood removed so no powder will escape. It is my 1st kit rifle so I imagine other kits have their problems also. Instructions said to work the stock down first but knowing the brass needs bumbs removed I digresssed and worked the brass 1st. Working the stock will probably mar the brass a little but I'll have little to do to finish it then.
@@EdmundMar Sounds like you got a good start on it. Take your time and if a part of the assembly is getting frustrating, take a break and go back to it later.

Much thanks to the Kibler Videos Ive been able to determine short comings of the other brands scanty instructions. I.e. found powder from its test firing inside the action, not much but would build up if not correctwd. I need to print and deepen the locks inlet so the gap it came assembled with is eliminated.

@@completepete you have to get a licence. to get it you must become a member of a gun club and start with .22s after a year your allowed to purches a .22. after a year of owning a .22 you can buy a handgun in a larger calibre and after owning that for a year and bieng a member for at least 5 year to a club you can buy a rifle legaly. now heres the fun part any gun made before 1890 can be owned with out a licence but not fired witout one and repros require a licence to own. the fastes way to own a fire arm is getting a huntin permit and that wil take a year of studying and skeetshooting followed by an exame on the hunting laws animals shootingskill and firearm safety. and that is fucking expensive. and your limeted in the gums you are allowed
