You could see a mechanic of stealing someone’s useable item in a fight or undoing armor, even just throwing things like an expensive vase to annoy a boss into a rage.
Something the yakuza devs did that I really liked in their spinoff games (judgment and lost judgment). Is that their new protag has chinese/ japanese inspired martial arts techniques that branch away from the older yakuza games more boxing/wrestling inspired fighting styles. They incorporated wall jumping/wall running moves that make u feel fluid and lightweight compared to kiryu, and alot of the different styles have specific niches to them that are best used in specific situations such as Crane being for multi target since its weak damage but AOE and very fast attacks, tiger for DPS and individual fighting, snake for defensive stances and countering enemies when cornered and in tight spaces. And they all reflect their real life instances that they're best utilized quite well. The games are sadly way too easy if uve played any of the previous games at least once or twice and realised that u can stack up on stimapps and all that shit. But the core gameplay and experience are very well made, and if the devs could just add an extra difficulty modifier where health items and other crutch shit isn't available it would be great. We need more variety in terms of enemy design, innovative mechanics, and level design based encounters for games in the future. Games like elden ring and wukong feel so basic since the only real mechanic ur using in fights is the roll button... and I bet the devs are too scared of trying to make specific adjustments and mechanics for bosses in sh*t like elden ring cus they focus too much on giving u alot of different builds that play very differently from one another in termw or character movespeed, dmg, and movesets and some random dude might have a far worse time on the game if he were to go greatsword rather than a katana on a boss that attacks at 500 MPH... So all enemies end up feeling like homogenized mobs with very slight variations in look and movement, but at the ebd of the day only require you to do one thing which is roll and roll and rolll and.... roll again.
You don't play as the real Wukong, you play a different monkey who is a very serious boi. Spoilers, but when you get further in the game and actually fight the real Wukong, he styles on you in funny ways that pokes fun at how serious your monkey is.

The transformations, spirits, stances, and skill trees allow the combat to be a lot deeper than what you presented here. If you think I'm exaggerating just to watch game breaker god play the game. It's a completely different game once you have combat mastery and use what's their. The light attack combo does get tired of looking at but 30 hours in im not feeling combat fatigued I feel excited for new game plus runs to become even more broken and op. Furthermore let me just say stellar blade was a complete joke outside of the attractive main character the combat sucks has no impact to it at all. The boss fights are generic as well and the enemy layouts are a joke. Wukong feels like a game made by a veteran game studio like fromsoftware and that's the biggest compliment I can give it. The production in some of these actions scenes is pretty wild. Some of the bosses even changed the way I think about bosses and what it means to be a boss in a game. The rat you fight at the end of chapter 2 is a perfect example of this. Using the environment against the player and forcing you to be more aware of your surroundings was pretty fresh to see in the game and unique to the genre in the way it was done.
Insomniac is over. In Spider-Man 2 they made me use a deaf-mute black girl for inclusivity. Are you kidding me? In Spider-Man 3 they're going to make me use a fat guy in a wheelchair?
You will have a mission where you retrieve a stolen dilator and use that on your superobese trans girlfriend. It's gonna be a fun minigame, like lockpicking in skyrim.
The gaming industry has fallen so far that mid AA ripoffs of better games are seen as masterpieces. If Darksiders 1 or Dante's Inferno came out today they'd be heroded as a masterpieces.
If Dante’s Inferno would come out today, the cultists wouldn't know whether to be offended or cheer. The final boss being a pitch black skinned Lucifer with a huge swinging dong would fry their brains lmao.
These should make a great epic RPG, similar to Wukong, where you play as a Kotaku intern in the heart of China on a quest to find the diversity. The main goal is to find and interview the last black Chinaman in all of the land, who keeps claiming he holds a claim to the Mandate of Heaven because he and his people were once kings. Along the way, you could get interesting sidekicks, like a rice farmer with a funny hat, and a talking pig, who you will have to save many times through groundbreaking spine-tingling and ultra-difficult QTE segments, so that he does not become dinner for the rice farmer, or get captured by the CCP for defamation. Then they just have to make it an Epic-exclusive, add in a few pre-order editions with knock off Chunko-Pops, and it will be a guaranteed 10/10
The "gameplay" should also be something akin to a sony movie game or even better a telltale game, where the player doesn't even have to do anything 90% of the time, and can instead take the time to really bask in the glorious dialogue of our diverse cast selection. We wouldn't want to make our modern audience feel left out if they were asked to actually play our games.
The game has mistranslations, So many people dont realize that resolute strike is actually a parry that dramatically changes how combat flows because of the mistranslation. I posted a video showing how combat is supposed to flow
We need more eastern developers getting into gaming, stellar blade and black myth wukong might not be perfect games but their thousands better then 90% the western slop we’re fed every year. As cringe as it is to say these games are a step in the right direction as long as they don’t sell their souls to ESG like most big Japanese companies, I would take 10 black myth wukongs and stellar blades over 1 dustborn or assassins creed any day.

I may be wrong and if so feel free to correct me, but that’s the interpretation I know about it.
Yeah that is pretty much it. Wukong is the ultimate LOLcow unpredictable idiot, who has gotten immense powers and lacks any self control or responsibility. No wonder Buddha puts a mountain on him for 900 years. Even afterwards it takes a long journey for him to learn measure and self control.

its not rocket science just give your customers what they want. And gamers are really easy to please, all they want is fun games with badass men and hot chicks and nobody to lecture them on diversity and inclusion.
A Chinese sage, Wu-Loong Schrong, or "The Drink" as he was sometimes called, once walked into my local bar to tell everybody about about Mao Zedong, then proceeded to drop his WuDong in the complimentary peanuts, before quoting Journey to the West and staring into my eyes, and then leaving without saying another word, never to be seen again. I don't know where I was going with this, and I don't know what happened to that man, but I think of that a lot, and certainly a lot more playing Wukong, and I can see where the inspiration came from. Also yeah good vid, would be better if there was a Puar mod
@@azurdetyvia2966 Correct. It was from some brainrot video that synth played on one of his streams. It's called "The Drink (Cup)" and yes, it will disintegrate a fair amount of your brain cells, so watch at your own caution.
Is it just me, or does it look like your basic attacks do almost no damage? Every video I see of this game, people are whaling on bosses, and it seems like your attacks do little damage.
The light attacks do little damage, but build up Focus, which is needed to mix heavy attacks with your light attack combo. And that's what does real damage and sometimes staggers the enemy.
you can get skills to boost your damage as you level up. you can boost the damage of your combos and get the stamina tree skill where dodges dont break combos and then you can use the attacks and dodge sequences to set yourself up. The final hit in the combo can cover a lot of distance so its a pretty effective way of closing the distance against really agile characters that dodge and move around fast.

I gotta say that for once I actually agree with every single critique in your review. You summed up all the thoughts I’m having playing this game so far.
In a sane world this game would be considered OK. The problem is that the bar so astronomically low that just being OK is basically a masterpiece now, or at least it is for normies who don't know any better. Honestly I don't much care about this game, I didn't care much about Stellar Blade either, the only recent trendy game like this I've played is Palworld. But whatever, I won't fault people for wanting to become monke and beat demons with a stick.
@@AkuTenshiiZero I respect that, every yin has to have a yang. So to me, Palworld was the game I ignored while I want to support this one. That's kinda funny.
Synth undersells this fact, but it is literally nothing but a boss rush game. You quite often kill a boss and then walk for 30 seconds before fighting another boss. The paltry areas with trash enemies seem to be little more than a chance for the player to grind if they suck at the boss fights - like Synth (lol).
I mean that sounds pretty good to me. Most soulslikes have extremely boring level design anyways and nothing has topped og dark souls, so I'm glad these devs just sidestepped that shit altogether and focused on their own thing.
It’s obvious this guy didn’t even finish the game. maybe only got past chapter 3. Never talked about the flying cloud where the game actually opens up more. Didn’t talk about the spider area one of the coolest locations or even talk about the secret ending. He said the game has no lore even though you could read about every enemy you encounter. Also you can replenish mana with soaks an a specific gourd. It’s like he read the back cover of a book an decided to do a book report on it 😂

All of his major reviews go into this kind of depth on the games. It just so happens that if the game is extremely woke then he'll talk about it more than if the game isn't woke at all. That stuff is cancer.
People just don't give his reviews a chance and listen to what he is actually saying. Or they don't know what woke means and don't notice when woke stuff is clearly getting sneaked in. Ex: Fallout tv show review where people somehow liked it and pretend that it wasn't woke.
Kudos on you for calling out China's AstroTurf around this game. Most anti woke channels refuse to call this out. Probably why you're one of the only reviewers I still watch
I watch a lot of Chinese and Soviet movies and honestly that stuff is closer to normal Christian sensibilities than almost everything produced in the western world post 1950.
The absolute state of video games when derivative, solid yet not particularly remarkable games like this are the best we have to look forward to. And yes, the Chinese astroturf is very blatant so thank you for calling it out Edit: I was also flabbergasted at that fox story, what the hell was that

Worth noting that there is only one light attack string, its the same across all 3 stances, it doesn't change, just the heavy attack in each stance changes. There is an unlockable spear that has different light attack animations, but there same thing applies there too, you will looking at that the the rest of the game and everything else has a cooldown and mana requirement.
One thing I really dislike about the gaming community as a whole is that everyone is blinded by recency bias. It happened to Elden Ring and it's happening to Black Myth Wukong. Just because the game is new and a lot of people are having fun with it, they will call it an instant game of the year, 10/10, the best game ever created and if you do as much as give constructive criticism you get attacked by droves of bots. It's the part of the gaming community that I dislike the most. It's the npc hivemind where you have to glaze the same game everyone likes.
Yes you’re a much smarter and more sophisticated human when you just shit over every single new game and scoff at people enjoying something. Game has been out over a week already. There’s no gimmicks here. It’s game of the year and one of the best combat games ever made. Elden Ring was also game of the year so don’t understand that comparison either. These are great games. Doesn’t mean they’re perfect but if you don’t want to call them 10’s, they’re 9.5’s at worst
@@bailoch All he said was that "I'd like to give some constructive criticism without some jerkoff freaking out about it" and here you are freaking out about it and claiming he was "shitting over every single new game."
Difference is that this game is genuinely the game of the year unless u count in shadow of the erdtree or spacemarine, the game is solid with really cool combat system with LOT of options, has a good story with really great animated cutscenes. Not saying it’s perfect, it has its catches, like the level design being less optional or diverse, less rewards for ng+ etc.But overall 10/10 game for a studios first try
One of the things that impressed me the most about this game was the length, and the variety of the transformations, skills and the RT LT mini spirits.
I absolutely loved Wukong, one of the best action games out there and harder than most Souls games, its linear and simple, no annoying collectibles or large expanses of meaningless encounters/camps, a ton of enemy and boss variety, story is better presented than any dark souls or elden ring. of course its no perfect game as it has some noticeable flaws, some really annoying hitboxes on larger enemies, I'm not sure about the stances being separate skill lines and requiring so many points, I think they could have really interwoven them better, kinda like how Nioh does it, theres a decent amount of skills and build variety but they could have added more core moves for Wukong, and some other stuff that can be nitpicked. But overall easy 9/10.
I don’t know Synth, 1M in sales outside of China in less than a week is crazy good for what amounted to a gotcha game dev studio & virtually no western marketing. There is a good chunk of Westerners buying this game to spite Journos and wokies. I know this because Im one of them. As far as astroturfing goes Palworld was one of the most astro’d games this year. I got fooled into buying it just to play it once for 1/2 hour and never again. At least w/Wukong they can back it up w/gameplay. • Ps on a side note- the Ch. 2 final boss was the hardest boss I ever had to face in a video game..! After over 30 attempts he finally went down, and man I never felt so accomplished in a game.
No one is saying 1 mil outside China is bad. He's was pointing out how that is evidence that this game is being astroturfed. Also, buying mediocre games soley to spite shitlibs is cringe as fuck.
Thank you for keeping your bias out of famous games with large anti woke demographic. It shows how you always keep it fair and square of the game you review. And I’m glad to see you being less cynical but still enjoyable
Here’s a simple explanation of the story of the fox. From the perspective of the second chapter, it satirizes the idea that humans and demons are inherently different. In reality, there is no distinction between humans and man-eating demons; "one thought can lead to enlightenment, and another to damnation." In the second chapter, both deities and demons commit the same mistakes. From the perspective of the third chapter, it reflects the core philosophy of Yellow Brow: reversing cause and effect. If you already knew the outcome of an event, would you still begin it?
Also I don't think that is it, or at least not all of it. the monk joins yellow brow because yellow brow loves klling. non-void celebrates going to hll and klling in his lore entry, non-able challenges this and is ostracized. it's presenting the monks as wrong in their cruelty, becoming dmns in the process.
Good review, man. I feel the same way. I hope these new companies improve in their next games and give us more options to the West AAA (dead) or the Japanese AA-AAA scene. The West is lost, and is trying to take down Japan with it. It's a tough time to be a gamer.
Finally some objective criticism instead of the unjustified over-hype. I am amazed by the game's world and i really enjoy walking around and exploring. But combat is indeed very basic, and the difficulty sometimes is really infuriating. Currently fighting Zhu Baije in Ch4 and i decided to stop playing and close the game, the idea of fighting him in mud while barely being sble to dodge is ridiculous.
I may never play this game because of my backlog but i am nevertheless happy for Chang and his 99 billion hive-brothers and sisters for finqlly getting a game that celebrates their nations history and mythology. I stand with the monke even if it is, like stellar blade, a 7/10 or a low 8
Thanks for the good review, I liked the fair/accurate wording. Honestly, if I would change anything about this game? I'd make it so the first level of every stance was unlocked from the beginning. It'd make the combat feel more natural, and players would be able to understand naturally which one they preferred and wanted to upgrade. It would also partially solve the general feeling that the move-set is too limited.
The story is amazing, the scenes between are amazing, the art is amazing (those little scrolls that you scan at the end), the graphics are amazing, no real reused bosses, and has a boss every 3 mins. Idk, I think it was better than, ok. I was really worried about the lack of attacks but it wasn’t an issue for me. Just my opinion. Really interesting about the astroturfing, I hadn’t heard, if it’s legit.
This game to me feels like Ghost of Tsushima, action combat that's HIGHLY overrated. I'm not saying they're bad games, i enjoy both of them but the replayability is nonexistent for me. I can't get over how people are still talking about GOT being great until this day, to me it's like people still talking about any assasin's creed game as being GOATed. They're just not
I mean imagine being like 16yo kid that's grown up playing solely modern slop, you'd have no idea what great games are even like, so even stuff like GOT would seem mind-blowing.
It also depends on what you like in games. I can enjoy a game with mediocre combat if I like all of the other elements. If you can't, if gameplay is like 95% of what you care about, then I can understand the complaint. Sometimes I don't want an overly complex or difficult game and I just want to chill.
Loved the review man, missed all the hype around the game and was really interested to hear what kind of game it was. You genuinely sounded enthusiastic unlike in your recent reviews :D
I really do appreciate this game as a "Souls-Lite". To be frank I hate most of the boss fights in Dark Souls (DS3 is the only Fromsoft game I've finished), they may have grand spectacle but you'll also often find bosses that basically hard counter your chosen build. And let's not forget the trademark Dark Souls "sprint through a dozen enemies only to start the boss fight at half health". None of that here. You can retool your abilities as often as you like, unlimited experimentation, also a deep flaw of Dark Souls (and even Elden Ring). Wukong is a streamlined Dark Souls and I find it highly successful in that aim. Some people might call Wukong "easy" but actually fighting the bosses in Wukong is a heck of a lot more fun than Dark Souls, which is good because that's basically all Wukong is.
@@sd5919 My opinion of Wukong is certainly helped by this only being my third entry into the genre (after DS3/Elden Ring). I do love the exploration in Elden Ring though, if we ever get a Wukong 2 with an open world it'll be one of the best games of all time.
@@thespacedisland5746 It took me 6 hours to beat the Abyssal Watch. I enjoy Dark Souls in premise but new players shouldn't hold back on reading guides.

@jonbaxter2254 great premise, but 2nd half of the game was a snooze fest and story died around the last few levels as well.
Dante's inferno is too offensive to normies and journalists in these times
It's the same with movies. Very mid movies are becoming big hits just because there was nothing better for so long.

Yes, the fights are very long and tedious.

And in a few months people will start criticizing it as if they always did

Difference is that this game is genuinely the game of the year unless u count in shadow of the erdtree or spacemarine, the game is solid with really cool combat system with LOT of options, has a good story with really great animated cutscenes. Not saying it’s perfect, it has its catches, like the level design being less optional or diverse, less rewards for ng+ etc.But overall 10/10 game for a studios first try
One of the things that impressed me the most about this game was the length, and the variety of the transformations, skills and the RT LT mini spirits.
“Barely ever penalized for spamming square” dawg I watched you die enough times to call bullshit on that critique.😂

I haven't had a very good night on Breakers in the end, at least I can watch this now with Puar.
If you already knew the outcome of an event, would you still begin it?
pure stnism.

I don't get it
let's go I've been waiting for this
we love Synth Man!
Love that sign-off.
Really interesting about the astroturfing, I hadn’t heard, if it’s legit.
i like it when u can use special moves on bosses unlike elden ring where its only about dodging
Stellar blade was good regardless
Holy shit i cracked up at the end of this review! Thank you for that 😂
I really do appreciate this game as a "Souls-Lite".
DS2 is braindead easy what are you talking about about
@@thespacedisland5746 It took me 6 hours to beat the Abyssal Watch.
I enjoy Dark Souls in premise but new players shouldn't hold back on reading guides.
That fox story is so f'n chinese. The way they are with animals, the way they think of them as soulless things. Makes perfect sense.
Tools to be used, living or otherwise. To treat them like humans is to invite misfortune.
It really is backwards, the way that mindset looks at the natural world.
@@PunishedBrak one could say it aligns well with the Christian understanding of man's steward role in the natural world, it's not that alien of a concept
beasts do not have s0uls.
@@PunishedBrak wait, what are you saying. beasts are not people and do not have s0uls.
the fox is a demon.
What I found is that there's like, selective localization or some shit. Some text is localized very well, to where you're like "is this the same game?" And then there's the menu descriptions...
