The shows don't really feel like they're showcasing games for consumers, but rather showcasing projects and studio prestige to shareholders and/or potential investors. Studios and publishers can point to their presence in these big flashy shows and say to shareholders or investors, "Hey, we're doing important things that are getting noticed". This would actually go a long way in explaining why 85% of the games shown featured "diversity" heavily in their material. Not only are devs/publishers looking to pull into dollars from higher ESG (or other similar investment advisory schemes) scores, but they're also looking to qualify for the myriad of grants and subsidies available from both public and private entities for meeting their intersectional quotes.

I have nothing against female protagonists. But in todays age there is a big chance that if it has a female protagonist they are gonna need to tell you every 10 min how they are better than men in every aspects or you hear "patriarchy" in every two sentence. Here's my theory: They're trying to build a female audience by catering to them through gaming and film because the likelihood of WWIII breaking out over the Taiwan Strait is growing by the day. Should that happen, men are the only ones who would be drafted/conscripted and that leaves a large vacuum in the entertainment industry for women to fill. That, or these giant investment companies see African countries' economies growing rapidly like the east Asians' in the late-1900s and they want to capture that market as soon as possible.

On your point about right-leaning folks getting into game development, a lot of us are trying. But the problem is if we don't toe the line and play by the rules, then we get boxed out of the industry. I'm working on getting into game development as a writer, since that's what my background is. But even in the creative writing space, the cancer that is DEI has wormed its way throughout. I recently turned down a publishing deal because part of their review process was an 'equity' check, and the specific example they used was "to make sure words like 'white' aren't capitalized". Pulled out of there real quick because I refuse to have someone tell me what can and can't go into a story. It's the sole reason I'm an indie author. And why I'll probably never be more than a writer for indie games in the future. At least until people finally get fed up, Black Rock gets Tyler Durden'd, and the pendulum swings back to normalcy.

That's always been the case. Look at a game like HALO, absolute dogshit. Can only carry 2 weapons, difficulty comes from bullet sponge enemies, maps are dogshit - and the franchise has sold over 81m copies of it's dogshit games for mouth breathers.
Corporate is too involved given how costly they make them. They also hired nobodies for ESG reasons, and bloat budgets further. But besides all that being hindrances, I think it’s also because teams are way too big. You can’t have camaraderie between 300 employees plus contractors. And even then it’s just siloed in their department. You’re not really gonna have the artists talking with programmers and level designers so there’s actual collaboration. Plus, the most experienced are older, with families, and aren’t interested (or concerned about supporting their families) to fight back. And the people under them are all narcissist, talentless hacks corporate is bringing in. Whether those experienced want it or not.
It's the whole thing, how many bosses and higher ups do you think actually play games anymore? For all his many many faults, guys like Todd Howard were basically gamers who were excited to play the games they make, this is a dying breed. You can tell too, When gamers do latch onto on some dev (arguably people like Miyazaki or Vicke nowadays for eg) these guys will be legit gamers, which is why their games are usually better than the rest.
It was certifiably dead by the time Crystal Dynamics came on. Not even specifically calling out their work, but this was supposed to be a new studio from the ground up, and notable leads. They all left. If your debut studio needs a literal 2nd studio to come in and “help” (make the thing), it’s over. You might as well just fully outsource it. But I imagine that didn’t happen because CD was likely already well into the next Tomb Raider. This game was announced 6 years ago and will likely need another 2-3 (4-5 years since CD came in to reboot it) since they didn’t even show a release _year_ (even some other ones said 2025). By the time it actually releases, it will nearly have a 10 year anniversary. That’s pathetic, lol.

What really sucks about the Perfect Dark reboot is that everyone’s going to focus on the horrible redesign for Dark herself, and not mention how it looks and plays nothing like Perfect Dark. Perfect Dark is fast-paced with tight level design and difficulty-based objectives; it is NOT a parkour cinematic-takedown stealth game. Fuck this industry.
Perfect Dark was originally a spiritual successor to "Goldeneye 64" that was made after Rare and Nintendo lost the 007 gaming license to EA. Also, we already have a parkour cinematic takedown game, it's called "Mirror's Edge."

The economy is starting to hit them and they are scared shitless. These games are all made assuming the COVID growth would continue but it’s not. Black rock can only back these games so long. Interest rates aren’t coming down and they need to make a return, especially as states like Texas took their money out of Blackrock (which Mr Fink seethed about). More than ever, “vote with your wallet will have an impact.” The industry is going to collapse. Look at Starbucks and McDonalds earnings and you’ll see people are tightening their belt, and with Steam and Emulators you can have as many games as you want. I do agree more RW people should make games.

I've been playing Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. They have their fair share of issues, but they're definitely more enjoyable and engaging to experience compared to the stuff that came after.

On your point about right-leaning folks getting into game development, a lot of us are trying. But the problem is if we don't toe the line and play by the rules, then we get boxed out of the industry. I'm working on getting into game development as a writer, since that's what my background is. But even in the creative writing space, the cancer that is DEI has wormed its way throughout.
I recently turned down a publishing deal because part of their review process was an 'equity' check, and the specific example they used was "to make sure words like 'white' aren't capitalized". Pulled out of there real quick because I refuse to have someone tell me what can and can't go into a story. It's the sole reason I'm an indie author. And why I'll probably never be more than a writer for indie games in the future. At least until people finally get fed up, Black Rock gets Tyler Durden'd, and the pendulum swings back to normalcy.

Corporate is too involved given how costly they make them. They also hired nobodies for ESG reasons, and bloat budgets further. But besides all that being hindrances, I think it’s also because teams are way too big. You can’t have camaraderie between 300 employees plus contractors. And even then it’s just siloed in their department. You’re not really gonna have the artists talking with programmers and level designers so there’s actual collaboration. Plus, the most experienced are older, with families, and aren’t interested (or concerned about supporting their families) to fight back. And the people under them are all narcissist, talentless hacks corporate is bringing in. Whether those experienced want it or not.
It's the whole thing, how many bosses and higher ups do you think actually play games anymore? For all his many many faults, guys like Todd Howard were basically gamers who were excited to play the games they make, this is a dying breed. You can tell too, When gamers do latch onto on some dev (arguably people like Miyazaki or Vicke nowadays for eg) these guys will be legit gamers, which is why their games are usually better than the rest.

It was certifiably dead by the time Crystal Dynamics came on. Not even specifically calling out their work, but this was supposed to be a new studio from the ground up, and notable leads. They all left. If your debut studio needs a literal 2nd studio to come in and “help” (make the thing), it’s over. You might as well just fully outsource it. But I imagine that didn’t happen because CD was likely already well into the next Tomb Raider. This game was announced 6 years ago and will likely need another 2-3 (4-5 years since CD came in to reboot it) since they didn’t even show a release _year_ (even some other ones said 2025). By the time it actually releases, it will nearly have a 10 year anniversary. That’s pathetic, lol.

I've been playing Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. They have their fair share of issues, but they're definitely more enjoyable and engaging to experience compared to the stuff that came after.

Character creators also suck nowadays though as they don't allow you to make attractive characters. Look no further than Outer Worlds and Starfield's character creators.
