Is it just me, or does it look like your basic attacks do almost no damage? Every video I see of this game, people are whaling on bosses, and it seems like your attacks do little damage.
The light attacks do little damage, but build up Focus, which is needed to mix heavy attacks with your light attack combo. And that's what does real damage and sometimes staggers the enemy.
you can get skills to boost your damage as you level up. you can boost the damage of your combos and get the stamina tree skill where dodges dont break combos and then you can use the attacks and dodge sequences to set yourself up. The final hit in the combo can cover a lot of distance so its a pretty effective way of closing the distance against really agile characters that dodge and move around fast.
I'm only 4 hours in but so far the central flow of combat is you build up focus with light attacks then unleah heavy attacks for more damage. Way it works is during bosses you hit quickly when you can do so safely then find moments to combo into a finisher that spends focus for big damage. It feels better to play than it might look in a video.
These should make a great epic RPG, similar to Wukong, where you play as a Kotaku intern in the heart of China on a quest to find the diversity. The main goal is to find and interview the last black Chinaman in all of the land, who keeps claiming he holds a claim to the Mandate of Heaven because he and his people were once kings. Along the way, you could get interesting sidekicks, like a rice farmer with a funny hat, and a talking pig, who you will have to save many times through groundbreaking spine-tingling and ultra-difficult QTE segments, so that he does not become dinner for the rice farmer, or get captured by the CCP for defamation. Then they just have to make it an Epic-exclusive, add in a few pre-order editions with knock off Chunko-Pops, and it will be a guaranteed 10/10
The "gameplay" should also be something akin to a sony movie game or even better a telltale game, where the player doesn't even have to do anything 90% of the time, and can instead take the time to really bask in the glorious dialogue of our diverse cast selection. We wouldn't want to make our modern audience feel left out if they were asked to actually play our games.
The game has mistranslations, So many people dont realize that resolute strike is actually a parry that dramatically changes how combat flows because of the mistranslation. I posted a video showing how combat is supposed to flow
It's not controversial. Chinese, Japanese and Korean games have hot girls. In those countries, making good games is the way to make money, instead of making every character ugly for DEI bucks.
@@032_m.alfathcirrus5Yes it is mediocre on every metric. This game took how long to develop? And THIS is the end result?! Worth noting that there is only one light attack string, its the same across all 3 stances, it doesn't change, just the heavy attack in each stance changes. There is an unlockable spear that has different light attack animations, but there same thing applies there too, you will looking at that the the rest of the game and everything else has a cooldown and mana requirement.

But God damn, this video is literally the ONLY one on this whole deranged site that has above room temp IQ takes about this game and provides a real, fleshed-out opinion instead of mindless hype or outrage. Thank you kindly my man 🙏🏻
All of his major reviews go into this kind of depth on the games. It just so happens that if the game is extremely woke then he'll talk about it more than if the game isn't woke at all. That stuff is cancer.
People just don't give his reviews a chance and listen to what he is actually saying. Or they don't know what woke means and don't notice when woke stuff is clearly getting sneaked in. Ex: Fallout tv show review where people somehow liked it and pretend that it wasn't woke.
It is very strange that no single review of this game I have seen so far mentions an obvious shortcoming of the gameplay. Namely, while the play character is a monkey (and not just some arbitrary one, literally the monkey king!), the movement and body form, however, are very humanoid. With the most disappointing consequence of which being that one can not climb like a monkey. How can this be? Not only could this have added at least a little more fun in the levels being able to climb on stuff and not just having to follow linear paths (with invisible walls everywhere), but it would have also been a very nice mechanic in the bossfights being able to climb on big bosses (as one can in Dragon's Dogma or Shadow of the Colossus). It is a missed opportunity in my view that would have made the game very unique among the other character action games.
That's just a complete matter of preference. I don't see how climbing would've improved this game in any way. If anything, that would've made traversing levels more annoying and time consuming, because you'd have to watch out for another traversal mechanic. Maybe it'd be interesting for boss fights in a dragon's dogma fashion (regarding climbing on monsters, or above them), but eh, even then...
@@SyndicateOperative There are a number of possibilities to help the player to find out wether or not one can climb on something. In God of War, for example, there are temporary markers added to rocks which can be reached (if I am not mistaken?). A similar game mechanic is also used in Sekiro for indicating whether or not one can reach something with the grappling hook. I'd say the gameplay in Sekiro is so good, 'because' the character has a high mobility also in vertical directions through the grappling hook (which he can also sometimes use in boss fights). It just makes a lot of fun in this game to traverse the levels with this mechanic. And I am missing a similarly enjoyable gameplay in BMW. There are a few cases in Black Myth Wukong where I really wished the character would at least have a more extended jump ability. For example in the prison area there is this one archer on a ledge which is very tricky to reach, among other similar cases.
I watch a lot of Chinese and Soviet movies and honestly that stuff is closer to normal Christian sensibilities than almost everything produced in the western world post 1950.
I really do appreciate this game as a "Souls-Lite". To be frank I hate most of the boss fights in Dark Souls (DS3 is the only Fromsoft game I've finished), they may have grand spectacle but you'll also often find bosses that basically hard counter your chosen build. And let's not forget the trademark Dark Souls "sprint through a dozen enemies only to start the boss fight at half health". None of that here. You can retool your abilities as often as you like, unlimited experimentation, also a deep flaw of Dark Souls (and even Elden Ring). Wukong is a streamlined Dark Souls and I find it highly successful in that aim. Some people might call Wukong "easy" but actually fighting the bosses in Wukong is a heck of a lot more fun than Dark Souls, which is good because that's basically all Wukong is.
Wukong feels more like Nioh than Souls which is funny since Nioh is a Soulslike. I guess Souls-lite kind of works for that but it feels like it makes for an unfair comparison somehow. That said I'm in the minority of people who have grown tired of Soulslikes. Bosses in those games now have too many tedious delayed attacks in their combos and the genre is starting to feel samey. Almost every boss in Lies of P and Elden Ring's DLC were just obnoxious. People in this comment section are saing Wukong's mid but I honestly don't think so. It's an easy 8/10 for me.
@@sd5919 My opinion of Wukong is certainly helped by this only being my third entry into the genre (after DS3/Elden Ring). I do love the exploration in Elden Ring though, if we ever get a Wukong 2 with an open world it'll be one of the best games of all time.

I absolutely loved Wukong, one of the best action games out there and harder than most Souls games, its linear and simple, no annoying collectibles or large expanses of meaningless encounters/camps, a ton of enemy and boss variety, story is better presented than any dark souls or elden ring. of course its no perfect game as it has some noticeable flaws, some really annoying hitboxes on larger enemies, I'm not sure about the stances being separate skill lines and requiring so many points, I think they could have really interwoven them better, kinda like how Nioh does it, theres a decent amount of skills and build variety but they could have added more core moves for Wukong, and some other stuff that can be nitpicked. But overall easy 9/10.
gotta say to point out both the negative and positive aspects of the game WHILE taking in to account the over all picture and experience is a skill that not many reviewers would had in this age of corporate shilling, good review
The new "AAA" trend: push another souls-like game made by a small company because people have been complaining too much about big companies doing the same thing.
Good review, man. I feel the same way. I hope these new companies improve in their next games and give us more options to the West AAA (dead) or the Japanese AA-AAA scene. The West is lost, and is trying to take down Japan with it. It's a tough time to be a gamer.

Is it just me, or does it look like your basic attacks do almost no damage? Every video I see of this game, people are whaling on bosses, and it seems like your attacks do little damage.
Yes, the fights are very long and tedious.

I'm part of the anti-woke crowd and I don't even watch his stuff often. I get his points, but I wish he'd offer alternatives.
Synth has consistently had some of the best takes on games regardless of what you may think of his politics
This review was more in depth than Griffin Gaming's noobish review
griffin is a hack stop supporting this grifter
Maybe it'd be interesting for boss fights in a dragon's dogma fashion (regarding climbing on monsters, or above them), but eh, even then...
i play monke i climb

Its a decent game I suppose, but how long was this game was in development?
Not sure what your point is - I'm quite sure that if you looked into it the game would have a far shorter dev time than any AAA title of the last 10 years. The only time these guys wasted was the 2 hours they spent laughing when Sweet Baby Inc tried to strongarm them into compliance.
six years or something, but i suppose that good though. When you're from rich country you kinda forgot, developing country didn't your have same standar yet
