Ah, memories... In June 1966 we travelled by train to Turin and collected our new white 850 tax-free. We travelled all over Italy and France, and drove back to London. A year later we exported the car to Australia, and traded it in 1968 for a Fiat 124. Great fun vehicles!

My first car was a 1965 Fiat 850, blue, FGT 794C, my mum christened it Fidget, entirely appropriately. It was a death trap that somehow I never managed to crash. The steering column was pointed straight at your chest, aquaplaning was routine, the dash was trimmed with some Hardy Amies tweed with tomato red carpet left over from the bathroom, tyre pressures were 16 front, 26 rear which gives you some idea of the balance of the thing and I adored it. At 9:30 the location of the 3rd and 4th spark plugs gives you an idea of why an additional two universal joints in your forearm would have been useful.
This was lovely to see, thank you for posting.

But some/a few years ago I have seen an elderly lady in a FIAT 850 which still looked reasonably fine, with only a few new paintings from possible rust-repairs? Exactly.. technically speaking the 850 _was_ a Fiat 600, but as this last iteration of their popular small car evolved bigger than the previous restylings, it was given a new model name and a life for itself. Both cars had the same project number: the 600 was project 100 , the 850 was project 100G.

This car was supposed to be a replacement of the Fiat 600. The idea originally was to replace the 600 with a new radical disigne of around 1000 cc. But, as usual a financial crise happened and all they did, as a quick solution was to do a 600 with a bigger engine. Of course the bigger engine needed a bigger radiator but the bigger radiator wouldn’t fit in the engine bay. To make it fit they swapped the position of the pinion. But now they had one forward gear and 3 reverse, so they had to make the engine run anti-clockwise. You couldn’t make it up, really

Cooing problems were usually because the belly pans of the engine compartmet were left off after a repair etc. They were an important part of the "pressurized" system which forced cool air to the radiator fan and then through the rear mounted radiator.

Even in the 1980's you could still do small repairs on your own car without any mechanical experience - Loved them cars.

I worked at a Fiat dealership back in the 80s came across a 127 sport 5 speed box a twin choke Webber pushing out 75 bhp, the lady owner said in was very slow, I took a look and found the second choke linkage wasn't working and one spark plug gap was closed, sorted the faults took it out for a test drive and fell in love with it! the lady owner was well pleased and tipped me a fiver!

Uruchomienie w ten sposób mogło doprowadzić do uszkodzeń cylindrów, tłoków, łożyskowania...

I worked on these in the late seventies, at the local dealers.
    Revolting little pieces of garbage.
Rusted before they left the factory, which was shared with most FIAT'S at the time.
Not quite as bad as the 850 van/camper, they could be driven from the showroom straight to the scrap yard.
Except the scrappy wouldn't want it.

A friend of my Father operated a Garage for 30 years specializing in VW's.
He attended to my Fathers Beetle VW for most of those years.
I met him after not seeing him for many years and he mentioned he had sold his business as it was too hard to keep up with all the new computer based Technologies....not to speak of the cost of new testing equipment.
Seems like the days of fix it yourself etc.. are gone.
