    Ellie, your company does amazing homes and your narrative is very informative. One question I have is on the porch build. At the 3 minute mark where you are looking under the porch you are explaining that the rim is doubled up for strength. From the camera angle it looks like only one of the rim boards is catching the front of the porch piers. Wouldn’t you want both to carry the load of the porch? Just seems like there is plenty of post that isn’t being used.

    • @AmishMeadowsOfficial
      @AmishMeadowsOfficial  Год назад

      From what I can observe it appears as if the concrete piers were installed a bit too far toward the house, and we had no choice but to crowd it. However, the one rim sitting on the post should be adequate.

    The “log homes are more expensive” is a myth. Stick houses with sheeting and insulation etc is comparable in price. Foundations, roofs, windows, kitchens, bathrooms etc are all the same. The log walls etc are really no more than stick framing.

  • @williamcooper2183
    @williamcooper2183 5 месяцев назад +1

    Do they give you a ballpark estimate of totol price

  • @Doc1855
    @Doc1855 8 месяцев назад

    Shouldn’t under the subfloor be insulated?
    We finished building a 2 story stick built house in 2019. Because we built into the side of our mountain, we had to put in a concrete slab inside our concrete footings.
    It’s not required in the state of Washington (where we built) to insulate between the first and second floor, but we did anyway. We also had all of our interior walls insulated.
    Our winter daytime temperatures are around 15-25 degrees Fahrenheit. We get 5-7 feet of snow every winter.
    So since we’ll be building our retirement home in Montana (single story), shouldn’t we insulate under the subfloor for added protection from the cold weather?

    • @AmishMeadowsOfficial
      @AmishMeadowsOfficial  8 месяцев назад +1

      In a crawlspace it would be a mistake to insulate the subfloor. Rather, you insulate the foundation stem walls.

    • @Doc1855
      @Doc1855 8 месяцев назад

      @@AmishMeadowsOfficial Thanks, I appreciate your knowledge.
      Once we find the land we’re looking for in Montana , we’d like to have Meadowlark build the “Trout” for us as our retirement home.
      We just want a single story 2 bedroom 2 bath home with an office or if the spare bedroom is big enough for a small antique desk then that would be fine.
      We love the wrap around covered porch. I’m sure we can store a lot of dry wood for the wood stove either on part of the deck or build a covered shed right next to the house.

  • @Doc1855
    @Doc1855 8 месяцев назад

    We’ve heard that every 2-3 years we’ll have to sand blast the exterior walls of our log cabin to maintain it correctly so it doesn’t rot. Is this true?
    How would we go about maintaining the exterior of our log home?
    Our current house has Hardi-Board shiplap siding (it’s made from wood fiber and concrete), it has a 50 warranty, doesn’t rot or burn.
    I don’t have to do anything with our exterior of our house.
    How often will we have to maintain our log house?

    • @AmishMeadowsOfficial
      @AmishMeadowsOfficial  8 месяцев назад +1

      We stained our Amish log store in 1995 and have not re-coded it yet. Obviously it’s time to do that. There are several products we could use for the exterior stain but depending how it is done 10 to 15 years between coats is normal and expected but you don’t have to sandblast and worry about rot, etc. that sounds like folks who use the wrong company or product on the exterior and had bad experiences and sometimes it’s due to bad design of the house where water splashes on the logs etc. Log Homes can last for generations.
