  • Hashimoto’s Food Reactions - Different Ways Food Can Make Your Symptoms Worse// It’s well known that food can be a main driver of Hashimoto’s symptoms, but did you know that there’s actually a few different ways that food can interact with your body and potentially make your symptoms worse? In this video, we’ll look at how your thyroid health can change when we react to food via immune system sensitivity, blood sugar fluctuations, and decreased digestive health. Understanding how this impacts your Hashimoto’s is key to making changes and keeping your body healthy long-term.

In what ways have you noticed that you react to foods? What changes have you made to help you improve? Feel free to share your thoughts and experience! -Dr. B

I have eaten wheat my whole life. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's this past December and decided to cut out dairy and wheat as a trial. I got accidentally exposed to wheat just after a month or so and had a pretty weird reaction. Immediately got really foggy brained like being drunk or high or something just without the euphoria. Then I got really tired, went to bed early - woke up in the night and threw up, and the next morning I had a lot of body aches and soreness like a flu. I did eat a whole bowl of pearl barley though and had no reaction.

I get rashes, weakness, and severe fatigue are my main reactions. Other foods cause gi stuff like bloating, BM issues, distention. So far I've cut out gluten, dairy, soy, tomato, some seeds, caffeine, and corn products. It's been a process to eliminate so much. I haven't lost any weight, but it has stabilized.

I gave up gluten, dairy, soy, processed foods, caffeine(coffee). I do sometimes fall off the wagon and have some pizza with cheese and real crust. I don’t know why I do that, but it’s partly habit and party the fact it’s all around you. I no longer stress over it. I’m doing the best I can and that’s great!
I have found that the longer I have been eating well, I can handle even some slips far better than in the past. However, if I go off for a couple days or so…. Oh boy look out. I’ll burp and burp and burp. I also notice I become kinda sad. Makes you wonder how many people are diagnosed with depression and they could just change their food options. I honestly would tell anyone who is depressed to try a change in diet first and then try medication.
This was a good one yet again! I hope everyone appreciates you Dr. Bodle because you are really providing good information. I always walk away with something I never heard before. Today, I realized it’s the frequency I better be careful of. Thank you!!!
This was so good! Thank you!!!

I do similar - trying to be keto ( I will not ever attain it - but it’s a goal ) makes me feel so much better- more agile - better figure - more energy - look so much younger - then I get tired of the food choices and go awry . Been feeling pain - and yes sadder !! Lonely - homesick for my faraway fam - don’t want to do yard work - back hurts and I am back on the good track starting today . Hashimotos and asthma - so never eat gluten / dairy/ try to avoid processed food . So true what you said

Thanks for speaking on this. I'm curious about about you think of vegetable oils as a driver of other food intolerances and autoimmune disorders. Dr Chris Knobbe and Dr Cate Shanahan are the best sources I can find speaking about this potential mechanism but I want to hear more from other qualified doctors on the subject. I know I have drastically improved from eliminating ultra processed foods. Based on my self testing, it doesn't seem to be one or even a few individual culprits, but rather the cumulative effects of various things stressing out my system. My reaction to eggs goes away when I'm off processed foods and I'll be testing milk at some point to see if that goes away too. Milk problems were a very recent development for me.

I went Gluten free just over a year ago..... it has helped, and certainly has not hurt. It’s made enough of a difference that I have stuck with it since it’s easier to do in 2024 than ever before.

I have avoided wheat gluten (gliadin) for several years not knowing that other grains have there own type of gluten that can be just as detrimental. I'm 7 weeks into going grain free and dairy free as well as no added sugar. I no longer have neck, back and joint pain. Secretions are returning like saliva, tears and earwax...no dark puffy eyes either- among other benefits. It's been great for me!

Thank you for the informative video!
I quit gluten for my Hashimoto's, but didn't test for Celiac disease before doing so. I cannot tolerate a gluten challenge and therefore cannot get formally diagnosed for Celiac. How do I know if my reaction to gluten is due to my Hashimoto's or due to undiagnosed Celiac or could it be both at the same time?

    • @DrBradBodle

Hi there! No problem and I'm glad to hear that you found it helpful! So to some degree, I'm not sure it matters which it is related to. It is possible to be sensitive to gluten and have it negatively impact your health without it causing the damage necessary to formally diagnose someone with Celiac. In my opinion, if it's making you feel worse in any way, then it's probably best to avoid or limit, even if someone doesn't technically have Celiac. Here's a link to another video I have where I speak on this topic in more detail. Hopefully my answer makes sense! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Thanks Dr Bodle! I am cutting gluten from my diet which is a work in progress. I think I feel better because of it. But I think adding selenium and zinc to my diet has made a difference too.

You're welcome Maria! It's a puzzle and it will require multiple pieces coming together to help us feel our best. Nice work using some nutrition strategies as well as some targeted supplements!

Hi Dr. Bodle. I was wondering if these reactions only apply to wheat or all grains? Thank you!

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  7 месяцев назад

Hi Jennifer, thanks for the question! It can be both. When I'm working with someone I will often have them remove both gluten containing grains and gluten free grains. Even though the gluten free grains are less likely to cause a reaction, they still contain certain proteins that can be a bit more challenging for us to break down. Now, it's possible these could be a good option in the long run, but it can be helpful in the beginning to remove them and really allow our system to become more stable. As always, it depends on the person and the context :)

Could you please help me navigate this issue so that I can get in touch with you and heal my Hashimotos; TSH 17, antibodies 992. Looking forward to connecting. With gratitude.
