An Afternoon on Logan Hill

  • The Orin Line of the Powder River Basin has been one of the busiest lines in the country since it was built in the late 1970s, peaking in fall, 2008.
Due to several factors, traffic has died off substantially, but with both railroads using the southern end primarily to access the basin, traffic south of Reno Junction can still be quite busy.
On this July afternoon/evening in 2022, we see just how busy the Logan Hill area can still be, catching several trains and a few meets on the 1% grade.

I used to be a trucker. Reminds me of the times crawling up mountain roads with heavy loads on the back.

Excellent Video. Great catches. Love the sound of those EMD's Locomotives howling in notch 8.

Thanks airing and sharing the outstanding video with magnificent locomotives. Endeavors are preponderating. Bliss

Nice catch of the beautifully painted coal cars with green squares and the BNSF locomotives.

Nice to see a lot of EMD's still out there doing their thing. I've been there twice, 2004 and 2007, and I'd sure love to get back there again.

You got there during a couple excellent times! Things have certainly changed, but it's still a great place to take in the action.

@@dubkirmedia1073 YES, it was an impressive show of railroading! Unfortunately, I got skunked on the 2007 trip when EVERYTHING just dried up for hours. I didn't know what happened, whether a derailment or a work-window or what, but I ended up leaving the Basin earlier than I wanted to and went over to Crawford Hill, Nebraska. 👍👍

Those EMD were used as it should be, back then they are almost exclusively used for coal drag only in a period when UP has lot of SD90MAC and BNSF with their colorful SD70MAC and ACe
