Is the Mk18 Reliable? Colt/Daniel Defense Torture Test

  • In this episode of TFBTV, ‪@JamesReeves‬ asks "is the Mk18 reliable?" For the unaware, the Mk18 is, more or less, a 10.3" barrel short and compact AR-15 or M4 that is common in the special operations community. There have been criticisms of the platform over the years and calls for its replacement - but does it really need replacing? To answer the question, James reviews military and government reports about experiments on the Mk18 and discusses them. Additionally, and just for fun, the TFBTV crew and Pensacola Police Department SWAT throw together an informal torture test to see how tough the Daniel Defense ‪@DanielDefense‬ and ‪@TheColtFirearms‬ Colt full-auto M4 lower combo - similar to what would be issued to the special forces operators who use this setup - really is. To make things a little bit more interesting, we run the Mk18 with a HUXWRX Flow556k 3D printed suppressor the whole time.

    I carried a Colt M4 on both of my tours in Iraq and it was great. Never had any issues. It's a great workhorse gun. I even built a replica of the setup I carried for my personal collection I liked it so much. Including all the out-of-date "enhancements" I added to it and the same model of surefire which is also very much an antique as far as weapon light technology goes. I still love it though.
    My duty gun now is a Mk18 derivative that uses the Geissele URGI handguard and is suppressed with a Surefire SOCOM can. It also runs reliably even after pushing it hard through my department's rifle course and running several thousand rounds through it. If anything it just runs better now.
    My department's SWAT team uses the HUX WRX suppressors. They aren't bad, but I don't care for the flash they tend to throw because of the way they're made. They may produce less back pressure, but they aren't the best option if you're looking for a full signature reduction package.

      @Joshua White to be fair, the guns seem to be very nice. The ammo we were using during the review was awful. The range we were testing at made us buy their reloads and it was some of the worst ammo I’ve ever used. Watch the original Daniel defense torture test I did, it was that same ammo. Almost a failure every Mag. However, of the five AR‘s that I brought to review, the Blackout was the only one that simply wouldn’t cycle the ammo. That indicates to me that it may have been perhaps under gassed for lighter felt recoil. I’m not mad at them about it. But I did send it back to them and they never followed up.

    I heard the "AR/M16's are unreliable " so much growing up in a quasi gun culture (mostly hunters and durpy fuds now that I think about it 🤔). Most, if not all, had never even seen an AR in person! Or maybe they did in Basic when they first entered service. I bought the myth, partly, and put off buying an AR until I saw a Colt (older) 6920 on sale for $700 and bought it with the idea of "I'm going to abuse the shit out this gun and see what its made of". Well, 5000 rounds of Russian bulk laquered ammo later (not in one session!) with only 1 light oiling, running that bitch in pouring rain, below freezing, blowing dust, mud, etc and I had only one issue that was soley ammo related.

      I bought the bullshit until I was issued an M16A4. Ran the shit out of that bitch, and she just took it. Very quickly I realized I had been lied to. I hold the M16 in very high esteem as a damn fine service weapon. I bought a Colt 6960 when I got out of the Marines. She too runs like a God damn sowing machine, just goes and goes, without exception or excuse. I have an M1A. Got tired of it rattling loose and having parts fall off of it. Bought an Aero Precision AR10. Same thing. Cheap steel case, cold or hot, wet and dirty, in the rain the snow and the mud, chews it up, spits it out, asks for more. Loved it so much I bought another. So impressed with my ARs I haven't replaced my AK and my M1A just collects dust. My ARs have been more reliable, more accurate, more durable, easier to clean and maintain, easier to accessorize, easier to use, just better, functionally, in every single way. I have bolt guns and all sorts of other stuff, but from home defense to hunting, if it needs to work, any more, I just grab an AR.

I have put over 40k rounds through the six rifles, with the V7 having a round count of 12k+ rounds. I have experienced a total of three failures. One being blown primers using Frontier M193 in 2018 when they were having major issues with overcharged ammunition. The other being a failed spring in a c-products magazine that caused two double feeds in the M4A1. I have experienced 0 failures related to the weapons. I also drop tested the V7SLW after watching AK operators union say his rail was shifting. I dropped the gun from six feet onto frozen ground six times, 0 shift. I then chunked the rifle in the air several times, 0 shift. My best group was with the M4A1, 0.46 with Nosler 77 grain match. All rifles routinely produce MOA groups with any kind of decent match ammo, 1.5-2moa with IMI M193. People love to hate on DD, but will gladly pay substantially more for a boutique rifle with 0 real-world battle testing.

    I feel like piston guns are more easily able to deal with gunk that gets in, but DI are more likely to keep gunk out. Videos of the mud tests from InRangeTV are a good example of that. Mud totally destroying an AK or piston ARs ability to function, while the DI AR didn't care

    • @JollyMcSwaggins8009
      @JollyMcSwaggins8009 Год назад +4

      @Nathan that's the thing though. The 'DI' system in an AR15 already does it. The fact that you need to figure out a solution to keep it out of a piston gun in the first place is a weakness of those designs. As of now, seems like it's pretty hard to make a piston rifle that also keeps stuff out of it

    • @shawnsanders9450
      @shawnsanders9450 Год назад +2

      Look up GarandThumbs test. They pushed a serious amount of mud into the the open dust cover of the rifles. The DI rifles were the only ones that ran 100% with flying colors. Not just 1 of them. ALL OF THEM! I couldn't believe it actually. It was nuts. Huge believer in DI after that. Plus DI is lighter with less recoil so there is that. I don't know if piston is truly better in sand and fine dust but with mud I can say with 100% certainty DI is superior.

    took a Gunsite (dusty AZ) week-long class with a DD Mk18 suppressed with a Saker K a few years back. didn't scrub the bore but disassembled and wiped down BCG parts every night. would get a little sluggish at the end of a day. the guys told me "the wetter the better" so kept it (over) lubed with gun oil. last day when going through the shoot house, click. execute failure drill, click. BCG was so gritty you could pullback and release the charging handle with no mag inserted, and the BCG would only go about halfway. yes, that's what a forward assist helps with, but it was FTF/FTE every round. that's when someone showed me TW25B grease. ran flawlessly rest of the day, and now every firearm I have gets a very VERY thin coat of TW25B on every friction surface after cleaning before being reassembled
    EDIT: The Saker K was my first suppressor, and it is not flow-through which I'm sure is what contributed to a dirtier-than-usual chamber and BCG. I learned a lesson from that

    A point that should be made: If other competitors beat the standard M4 it is likely largely due to the carbine length gas system. If I recall correctly if you switch to a mid-length gas system on a conventional AR-15 it doubles reliability and reduces wear on parts by 50% approx. So there is not actually anything wrong with the AR-15 and stoner system if put together in the right setup. Military Arms Channel has tested a BCM (I think) AR-15 and has shot over 12,000 rounds through it without cleaning or additional lube. Stoner/Sullivan's design is still the best imo.

    Awesome content! For a system that has essentially been around for 50+ years, I wonder why it they feel the overwhelming need to find a “more reliable” one? What ever happened to “If it ain’t broke…”? If I were in charge, I would ask the folks who actually use the weapons if they need something better. And if so, let them build it. But that would probably make too much sense.

    Part of what’s interesting to me about the shoot footage is how low you carry the stock in the pocket and how high the operators do. You get down on the gun - super good for short term engagements- while they sit the butt higher on the shoulder in a more relaxed, sustainable position.
    But yeah, super fun footage and interesting results.
    Question though: Do you zero your dots in that low-in-the-shoulder pocket orientation or more of a relaxed, up-high cheekweld? Asking for a friend.

    Fun review. I have a 2016 MK18, originally with the .081 gas port, now .070. Close to 15,000 rounds; I’ve lost count. Much of it full auto, suppressed too, and abused. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. It’s a rifle I will never part with!

    • @sureshottactical5403
      @sureshottactical5403 Год назад +2

      @Ass Clapper I’m on my second barrel, but that’s only because I change the gas port size around 5000 rounds. As I frequently shoot full auto, I really don’t pay attention to the barrel anymore, there’s a good chance it’s shot out, but it’s just not a concern for the way I use the weapon. I would imagine the gas port opening is about the size of the Grand Canyon right now.

    Curious if you will have a more dedicated video to the HUXWRX/OSS flow 556k can coming soon, as I spied the Mk18 in a previous video, but didn't notice the can or flash hider on it. I'd say for the fact you guys were in a concrete echo chamber running whatever cheap and available ammo without flash retardant in it through a Mk18, it didn't sound or look too bad. Took some nice impacts to the muzzle end when trying to throw that thing into orbit, too, but looks like it didn't do much to hamper performance.

    I wish more creators doing torture tests stated the type of lubricant being used and how the bcg was treated. There's some moly / tungsten plating lubricants out there that will greatly assist all moving parts under extreme circumstances. The poar bonding also can help with not allowing as much debris to actually stick to the treated points of the firearm. And then you have products like weaponshield that greatly counteract wear points at an insanely high level. Realistically though, you throw enough debris and much into a system then no product on earth can help with that...

    THIS is a reliability test. Every single rifle that has been chosen for any country's military is almost infinitely reliable on semi-auto. If you're not doing full auto in a reliability test then you aren't actually stressing the gun.

    I think it's safe to say that firearms technology as it currently exists has peaked. And the only way to justify replacing the m4 would be if someone actually invented a new and more effective way of sending a projectile from a gun shaped object, which hasn't really happened yet.

    I thought it was Vickers that helped develop the HK piston gun because under the 14 or so inch barrel length, in certain circumstances (can't remember if it was OTB, or really cold, or ..) the DI system just was not sufficiently reliable, especially down at the 10.3" MK18 size. You would think the Team guys would stick with the MK18 since it was substantially lighter if they did not see an issue.
