Totally missed the facial expressions when FiFi was high in the tree and crying, just before spotting Flo. All we got to see was a bunch of trees. This is one of the best documentaries on chimps I have ever seen. I was surprised they did what they did. All the while I'm watching trees and pleading-- SHOW FIFI PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

At the end of this one you see that Flo never disciplines Flint so the mothers just leave early and he never becomes part of the group of chimps his age to advance himself up the ranks to someday become alpha. He never gets a best friend or learns wrestling with other males or ever develops any kind of physique. At age 8 he still won't leave his mothers side and looks like a female with no muscles.

That is an instinct you also see in human little girls with dolls. Has to be a good thing for evolution to make sure little girls are into babies almost the moment they aren't babies themselves anymore. And the mothers (like good human parents) know that it can be dangerous to let a child play with a baby, not just because the baby is vulnerable to clumsy handling, but also the young one lacks the experience to identify outside danger good enough to keep the baby safe from predators and other dangers. Its not just a "primate" (humans included) thing. Some animals produce a lot of offspring and rise them quickly (if at all). And others just raise one or two young ones at the time and put a lot of time and effort in raising them, keeping them safe, in cases of chimps for years. So taking the risk that the baby gets hurt or killed just because a little girl wanted to play "mom" and didn't know how to secure the infant while climbing a tree or walk around, spotting a predator too late.. For the mother that is just not worth the risk.
