My bestie Christian and I were obsessed with skateboarding when we were 11 and one day when he was at the park, he lucked out and happened across a copy of Tony Hawk’s Underground lying on the ground. He was never going to pass up the opportunity to play a free game! So the next day at school he told me all about it. He said that there was a level in Russia and the way he described has always stuck with me. He put on a strange voice that in hindsight kind of sounded like an impression of Ozzy Osbourne and exclaimed that ‘it was loik, all snoooooow!
American Wasteland was peak THPS for me, mainly because I played it at a time when I was slowly drifting away from childhood innocence into teenage stupidity. I also hold its soundtrack to the highest regard, even considering it as my favourite out of any game ever.
I'm currently replaying thps4 on PS2 and enjoying it. You are so right about the level curve though - the final "official" level has you doing combos of 200k, then you unlock the carnival level and it's somehow fine to expect 750k and 1.5 million points?? Great soundtrack though
Honestly the Underground era is my favorite, Partially because of the distinct lack of time limit (plus the only 2 i've fully beaten)... Also you're from New Orleans too? Nice so am I... I think part of the reason why I adore the New Orleans level in Underground 2 is because i ended up having to move in 2005 (lets call it weather related reasons) and in a weird way it reminds me of home.
Underground 1 is my favorite for that pure story and seeing my personal skater grow. But if I were to pick my favorite THPS soundtrack, I would have to go with Pro Skater 3. Not only does THPS3 have goddamn REVERTS, but it also has a pretty funkadelic soundtrack that I listen to on car rides quite a lot. And hey, if you want to give Underground 2 more credit, it has a pretty good PSP port, and the game itself was the basis for THUG: PRO - The fan revival that kept Tony Hawk alive.
Really nice vid since now you have me wanting to eventually get to Tony Hawk's Underground 2. I had only ever played Tony Hawks Underground 1 but it was a ton of fun and I remember spending so many hours on the game. Though, I had no idea you could play the game twice to get an alternate ending of finally knocking out the buttface! That's awesome! This was also my first true introduction to Tony Hawk games as at first all I ever played were the demos and through friends. I still need to try the 2nd game.
I totally missed underground 1 for the longest time. When I first got an Xbox it was around 2005ish and by then THUG 2 was on the shelves so I started that one. It’s really goofy, and as a then 10 year old kid, I thought it was the funniest thing in the world. And I didn’t know until recently that there was an alternate ending to underground 1 either! I think it’s something pretty easily missed.
If they really wanna parody New Orleans, all they had to do was make a level with puddles everywhere and you had to skate against a gang of roaches that have taken over a neighborhood. The roaches could blast you with mosquitos and if you win then it's suddenly Mardi Gras and everyone eats King Cake.
Underground 1 and 2, and American wasteland are so Fucking good. Those were my favorites on the Ps2, as much as I loved thps3 and 4 (especially 4) the amount of stuff to do outside of just a trick, the difficulty, humor, story, characters, I loved it all. I would love to see them get the same treatment thps1 and 2 got. That would be an instant buy from me.
THAW x THUG are my favorite, used to stay up all night playing THAW had to put a shirt under my room door so my mom won’t see the light 😂. THAW has the best soundtrack to me , like eating glass , Fatlip , refusal , I wanna be stero typed stayed on repeat ❗️❗️
THUG2 does pull off that free-flowing gameplay style that Aggressive Inline did first. As for the humor I think that's fine since just in generel humor evolves and isn't always futureproof it changes and that's just fine. I don't go back to THAW that often but the THUG duology are still great games at least for me.
I grew up playing thug, thug 2 ,thaw. I didnt like thaw cause 75% most of the story was tutorials on how to play and do features since thps 2. Id say that thug2 is probably my most played ps2 game when i was a kid. Ive always liked playing thug 2 classic mode over and over again.
THUG 1- it had a story and you had to create your own character that was also voiced, you could hop off your board and walk and even hang from edges. it all was all revolutionary for the series THUG 2- The created character doesn't even speak any more. The story tries to be like a CKY/Bam or Jackass episode? but doesn't really feel like either. I really hated the weird gimmicks like Steve-o on the mechanical bull or the wheel chair guy, it felt like the game itself was making fun of it own gameplay mechanics. Thug 2 looked more colorful but seems like it was a downgrade in graphics even they both do look very similar.
never understood why the humor of thug 2 made people view the game as the lesser of the two. thug 2 is way more fun and it has classic mode. thug 1's levels always felt underwhelming and like you never spent enough time in them.

That’s awesome! I’ve never found a game on the ground, but Underground would be a heck of a find.
The humor of these games is perfectly set to when it was made. Like postal 2
The gameplay and locations are probably my favorite in the series due to how they flow together

You be surprised that some people don't find the games/humor dated lol
I can agree that the humor of these games has become dated, but I also think that it doesn't make them any less funny.

THUG 2 is where the series went off the rails imo
Been enjoying these videos you're pumping out! Good job!
Thanks for watching! I’m happy you’re enjoying them!

@@Under10Hours Damn, that's pretty crazy dude. And yeah, I think I recall enjoying the humor during that time as a kid also.
"poorly aged"

I played 1 through thug 2 growing up… I didn’t play another tony hawk game till the remake in 2020
