If you get CLP, lube, and other cleaning stuff down in the striker hole it can cause light primer strikes.

I found a few small burrs in my GX4 striker channel and lightly used a round file to smooth them out and now it runs perfectly.

Just my opinion from a really brief view on my computer monitor but with 40 years of centerfire shooting experience those were adequate strikes. A round that doesn't go off doesn't have the cartridge pushing back against the inertia of the firing pin so regular rounds that did fire would have about 10 thousandths deeper strike than one that didn't go off.

I had a couple in March... wrecked a video I was shooting. Will now have to convert it into a new reliability test. Was it the ammo, or the gun? We will see when I have time.

    G2c 5k rounds no issues
    G3 5k rounds no issues
Gx4 200 rounds 17 light primer strikes 9 failure to feed
Did Taurus made the gx4 in Brazil?
Or did I get a lemon???

No, you're experience is exceptionally bad, but not rare enough I'm afraid. Others have commented similar stories, though yours is the worst I've personally heard. My GX4 must be unusually good. I don't normally have such luck with guns. I can't say I'd recommend it based on the feedback I'm familiar with so far. I do like mine, but I'd definitely spring for the extra $150 and get the original Sig if I had it to do over.

So I'm on my 2nd barrel from Taurus and both had FTF around 70 rounds in. I tried polishing the feed ramp. Haven't been back to the range yet, but I'm kicking myself for not paying a little more for something else. What do u do with an unreliable gun? Don't want carry it, don't feel right selling it. Thinking about the lake line barrel..@@brusk3978

I'll try to keep this short. I likely know what your issue is. I am a reloader, which affords me the opportunity to create cartridges of whatever length I want. It is likely that the ammo that's having problems has an overly long OAL (overall length) for the GX4 chamber.
Test like this: remove the barrel. Drop a spent piece of 9mm brass that the GX4 has fired. Note how far it goes into the chamber. Now take the offending ammo. Is it able to insert as far into the chamber as the empty brass does? Maybe some do but some do not. It's probably within a couple thousandths of an inch, so that some will work and some will not.
If the cartridge is too long, when you fire it, sometimes the loading of the round from cycling will push it in far enough such that the bullet actually sets back into the case so it can be fired (not desirable as this increases pressure beyond how the ammo manufacturer designed the round, potentially dangerous). If the crimp is too strong, or if you are manually inserting the first round even with a slingshot method, it may not go far enough into the chamber. The firing pin will hit the primer, but not hard enough. (Have you tried the offending ammo in another 9mm preferably with a longer barrel?) Second strike will sometimes be enough to detonate the primer and it will fire. But beware because the case is not fully supported.
This happened with my reloaded ammo with my G2C. I knew right away what the problem was because I had experienced it with another gun and ammo. At that time I had a conversation with CCI on the phone as I erroneously thought that the primers were bad. Obviously from what I am explaining, it was the length of the cartridges. My easy resolution was to shorten my reloaded ammo cartridges. Sure enough, my reloaded ammo then worked with no undetonated primers. Again, it was not a true "light strike."
You can also compare the lengths of the easy range anmo cartridges like the Blazer Brass and the offending defense ammo.
I was actually reading a little more about this last night, how many gun manufacturers these days are putting shorter chambers in their gun barrels, so this problem is becoming more prevalent than say 20 years ago.
So, as a bottom line: nothing wrong with the ammo, nothing wrong with the gun. The Gx4 just doesn't "like" that ammo. However, it is unfortunate that companies are using shorter chambers. But they are most commonly doing it with compact guns, for longer rifling of barrels which gives better accuracy, and other engineering reasons that I probably do not know about.

Glad I could help share my experience with you. I have it on my to-do list to create a short video on this topic. I only have a few videos on YT as I only create one when there’s something that I want to say that is not otherwise available. I just have to make the time to do it.
This very week, I am working up a new load in 45 ACP for my 1911. I’m using a heavier and different shaped than typical bullet (using a 255 grain instead of a 230 grain) that a 1911 “likes.” I keep the barrel right on my loading bench to ensure that the slide will go forward properly and the gun will go into battery.
It pains me to see and hear SO MANY people think that there is a problem with a certain ammo or that a gun is junk, when neither is actually true.

I just bought a new Taurus GX4 and took it to the range for the first time over the weekend. I put 200 rounds through it without any issues...except...I think my rear sight is drifting to the right in the dovetail slot...the most common solution seems to be to install different sights but I don't feel like I should have to do that on a brand new gun. I plan on contacting Taurus customer service to see what they have to say since it seems to be a common problem with this model. Otherwise it's a great little gun.

I have a Taurus gx4 that I bought new around 6 months ago, shot 50 rounds of AAC ammo I got off the palmetto state armory website, had 2 light primer strikes. I ended up finding the rounds and trying them again and 1 fired and the other didn’t, so I put it into my Glock 45 and it fired….so I don’t know what’s up with it. I love the gx4, I was very accurate with it. I didn’t clean it or anything before I shot it. I plan on taking it out again soon and seeing if it does it again.

I put 200 rnds today, ammo brand Sterling and blazer aluminum, both of them failed with multiple light primer strikes, and then the same failed cartridges in my sig sp2022 fired. I cleaned it afterwards and will try soon. I Do love the gun when it fires well, its not snappy at all, and it feels amazing ergonomics.

I've only heard good things about the GX4 except from Taurus haters. I had a Taurus .38 snubby back in the day (can't remember the model) and never had any issues with it (traded it for a kayak.) If I end up purchasing a GX4, it will be the first 9mm I've ever owned. I'm all about comfort and concealment. The GX4 definitely checks all of my boxes, and the added capacity is certainly a bonus! Btw, have you ever owned a Glock 42? It's the only Glock I own (got a good deal on it.) Personally, I really enjoy it. The only thing is, .380 ammo selection is limited and expensive. That being said, I agree that Glock is overrated and overpriced. Hopefully I will get my hands on a GX4 sooner than later. Take care and stay vigilant.

  • @noahcount7132
    @noahcount7132 2 года назад +2

Dave, you said the failure of primers to detonate occurred after you had cleaned and lubed the GX4. Could it be that the primers failed because they were contaminated and rendered inert by solvent or lube that remained in the GX4's action following your cleaning session?
