Just done this on my 2010 E92 330D. Cost me £118 for the Gates kit from Autodoc (belt, tensioner and 2 idlers). Took me 90 minutes from start to finish. Trickiest bit was getting off the plastic elbow pipe to the air filter (didn't want to use too much brute force). There's less room at the front of the engine bay on my 6 cylinder car than yours. But with the cooling fan removed it's OK for access. Since I bought this car in September 2022, I've had the EGR replaced (under warranty). New shock absorbers all round (did the rears myself got the fronts done at my local BMW specialist). Replaced the fluid in the auto gearbox. Oil and oil filter change (after taking it from 107,000 to 116,000 miles). The air conditioning stopped working 4 weeks ago.
I have been through this a couple of years and I changed all the pulley and noise was still there after doing more research I found out that the pulley on the alternator in some model actually has a clutch inside and it is the clutch pulley that makes the noise so I brought a new one along with the special tool to remove and replace it and noise gone
30 mins start to finish on a 118d with the kit being £89 on ebay for belt and two pullys and the tensioner. Thanks very much for your vid mate, couldn't have done it without it
It always used to be easy with belts on older cars as they had a ribbed side and a smooth side. All the tensioner and guides were smooth and the drives were ribbed so the old over under was easy to seen. I would have to take a picture to remember that routing. Easy job though so I may do mine at some point.
Hi George I have seen a INA V-Ribbed Belt kit about £30 cheaper or would you stick with the Gates Also would you change the water pump at the same time had car 12 years never change
Great video once again mate very well explained. Just a thought would you be able to do a video on the rocker cover gasket replacement as mine is leaking 😩😩 would love to have a go at it my self but would like to see it done first to give me some confidence. Cheers pal
My e87 was leaking oil from my rocker cover too.. replaced the whole rocker cover as i wasn't sure if it was a gasket fail or a hairline crack in the cover. despite having no clue what i was doing it was relatively straight forward. Mechanic friend recommended applying some extra gasket seal on the half moon areas of the gasket though as it is good practice.
Well done! There are no videos of this quality in regards to the same engine in my car - the F11 530d - so I guess I'll have to make a video. WIll probably use this one as a reference - the job was well-explained and easy (one thing though - wasn't the old top deflection/idler pulley ribbed - and the new one flat? Or I must be mistaken). ALso - this work seemed much, much simpler if compared to my other car - a 2008 V6 3,0 TDI A6 Allroad - which takes about 2 hours and provides NO SPACE between the rad/engine - and by the way - I've done that abt. 20 times. No kidding. Either way - thanks for the video, greetings from Latvia.
With regards to the torque settings. Keen mechanics video on the N57 states that the torque for the deflection pulleys is 38nm also. Would this be different between the two engines?
@@GeorgeAusters cheers george. I have a question how will i know if my pully damper (the big circle on the bottom will need changing) cant seem to understand if thats on its last leg. Cars at 148k Water pump needs doing and thermostat. Thinking to do everything in one goe. Your videos are such a help.
Great video and great explanations. Seems like an easy job to do if you got the tools and the right parts. Can the tensioner pulley be tightened by hand, without the exact torque ?
I have to replace my belt, but its so fking tight i got the n47d20a engine which is exactly the same. Im using the 1697 belt is that the right one? How can you set the tensioner locked if theres no pin as i had mine replaced about 20k miles ago but its still good. The rubbers perished on the old belt tho starting to line up.
Great job! One question: Because it’s an N47 would it be a good idea to change only the timing chain tensioner? Or would you pull the engine and do the whole timing chain?
By the time you can hear the chain rattling on cold startup, both the chain and camshaft sprocket are badly worn, new tensioner will put more stress on the chain which will snap more quickly.
Hi, nice job again! I have also replaced my tensioner with the same brand gates. I do notice that it does move a little bit when the engine is idling. is that also your case? the old one was moving remarkably. I can't really follow your video. I hope you can share experience. Is that normal?? It is maybe 1 mm.. thanks again love from amsterdam
What is the length for this particular belt? I have the same engine with el. power steering. I jave checked realoem and there od two lenghts for engines w/ or without el. power steereing, but i have this roller. So i'm confused. TY
The trouble is, you only show half the job. Many M57s have a stretch belt in front of the serpentine belt which needs to be changed at the same time. Another issue is that the alternator mounting bolt, into which the idler pulley is screwed can shear, leading to the belt flying off. You should therefore replace this with the fitting kit. It’s only a tenner from BMW. As I say, half a job.
Not quite. It’s like the tensioner was our problem but pointless just replacing the tensioner when the rest of the kit isn’t much more and the new owner will have piece of mind knowing everything is done👍🏻

Yeah well worth doing Mark!
Thanx a lot..I’ll do mine 👍
Great video
I’ve changed
Crank shaft pulley
Belt
And the three in this video, but I’m still getting a left to right movement with the tensioner 😕
Certain amount is fine
Solid advice, I did the belt & tensioner on my M54 only to have to do it all over when the idler pulley gave out.
Yeah no point just replacing one part mate
Videos on abs dtc would be great. How to diagnose which corner is having an issue and how to repair

What key do you use with this click,
Do you have the model number?
Like for the question?
Can you pls explain what key it is that you have used?

If you watch my timing chain replacement part 3 video, it’s actually included in that mate👍🏻

If the bolt size is different yes
Great video. Mine is a 2010 on 105k and has a squeak from that area so I guess I need to do this. I am planning doing the water pump at the same time
Have you got any source for finding out what torque (Nm) to use for various bolts in those cars?
I use ISTA mate
Great perfect. This needs doing on mine, the belt need changing. The tensioner pin, where do i get. Can i do it without the pin.?
The pin comes in the new tensioner👍🏻

Is it normal that they little moves?
BMW 316d n47 es que la pièce et adaptée ? et le serrage de couple et le même ?
Good video mate! How do you find out the toque settings for different engines?
Use ISTA mate👍🏻
Hey George lad, I'd like to thank you for all your work videos.
What would you say is best way to get ITSA
Good video. In fact, a worn out belt tensioner may cause the crankshaft pulley to fail prematurely.
That’s very possible actually!
Solid video George 🙌
Cheers mate!
Great video!
I think that you need to change engine mounts too.
They’re actually not that bad
Hi George, why don't you remove the EGR & EGR Cooler from this engine?
As I’ll be selling it soon👍🏻
Soft deleting it through a remap should also be good enough

Yes, forgot to check out. Its 1698mm, so my dilema solved. Thanks

Hi George went with Gates KP36DPK1698 kit water pump included £133 eBay thanks for advice and your great videos

Nice video... but sound's like the timing chain is about to shit itself and ruin the motor. 👍

Not quite. It’s like the tensioner was our problem but pointless just replacing the tensioner when the rest of the kit isn’t much more and the new owner will have piece of mind knowing everything is done👍🏻
I fit on the same brand. I wouldnt recommend it, the tensioner is a chinnese part with a much weaker spring than OEM. It does the job though
