Hi. Another good video. My N47 engine, E60/ 5 series crank pulley is all cracked (121.000 miles). I'll get it changed next weekend. Waiting for autodoc to deliver the parts. Corteco crank pulley + Gates belt kit. Removing the crank bolts with impact tool is the best tip. Otherwise you have to buy a special tool which costs £80 or you can ruin your timing chain if you spin the crankshaft the other way. Thank you George. Keep it like that.
My daughters 1 Series crank pulley completely disintegrated recently, wish I had come across this video, before we had it recovered to an inde, could have saved loads. Thanks George for a well formated video. 👍
Put my 2011 N47 in today for chain replacement at 108000miles and the mechanic sent me pic of the crank pulley cracked all around in a circle basically😂 I remembered in another one of your videos you mentioned the pulley should be changed too on n47s😁

4:33 Yes... 118d/E87 if you don't have Chinese hands - remove fan. 1x screw on the side/top of fan assembly (driver side in UK), 1x electrical plug to unplug right on the top (you cannot miss it), then on the passenger side there's a clip/latch holding fan to radiator just about half way between top and bottom - just hold it with one finger then pull fan assembly UP - difficulty level 0. Oh.... and to do that all you have to take out air filter box as it's blocking access to the screw... 2x10mm socket for the box and 1x flat screw to release the pipe. Total time spend for disassembly airbox+fan+crankshaft pulley - 30minutes. Replacement should come tomorrow so still not sure how long reassembly will take! PEACE
Update: Reasembly - same +/- 30min ;). Only difficulty is putting a belt back on when you're alone. Gearbox on neutral + belt on all wheels apart from alternator - easiest to access as on the top - tensioner FULL clockwise then wigle the belt on the alternator pulley - yes it's tight but twist pulley left/right on repeat and it will pop back where it was.
Hi George - when you torqued the crankshaft pulley up, how did you prevent the pulley from rotating - or with the offset bolts does it not rotate when you are doing this?
Hi Phil, I just did my today and had the problem of crankshaft rotating when tighting the torque to 120 deg. So used a impact wrench with offset bolt/socket to slowly tighten the bolts by 120 deg. No rotation of crankshaft and made the job so much easier. No locking tools required.

When i remove the belt the noise goes away, so deffo pulley related, i have changed the alternator but noise is still there. Rest of the pulleys are smooth. Hi George. Well done job mate. Im going to replace turbo to my f31 318d. I just cannot find the torque manual for the screws :/ do u know where I can find it please???
Mine just snapped, i have to order for the crank pully which can take 2 weeks, is there a 1 first aid so that i can get this thing moving am stuck upcountry
Does the engine cover keep the egr completely hidden? Ive heard that if an mot tester can see it is missing you will be failed, however he cannot take off any covers to inspect it.
Great video once again. tensioner pulley is as noisy as your was! Am I safe using my impact driver for removing pulley bolts. Just concerned about crankshaft spinning, is it ok to use impact without locking? I’m not sure how I would lock it. Any suggestions very welcome.
Another Great Video👍. A quick question for you, when the crankshaft pulley starts to rattle around does it need to be replaced straight ASAP or can you continue driving I. E will it become worse or snap.
Use the torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 40 torque, then put a offset angle socket with impact wrench to slowly further tighter the bolts by 120 degrees. Many thanks George for your video, really helped my replace the pulley on my car today.
Is it normal for a new crank pulley and fan belt to make a slight squeek noise just on start up? Mine does it for 2 weeks now since replaced but only on warm starts
@@GeorgeAusters hi George I checked now got my mate to start it the noise when the engine starts its coming from the alternator and looks luke the alternator jumps abit(dunno if thats normal) but the noise is from there

Hi Dear George, Thanks for your interesting video. Could you please give me link or document where to find nm tightening torque (nm)? Thanks to you very much. Regards Simo
I got the torque settings for my E90 320d from ISTA+. Search for Vibration Damper in ISTA+. On my N47 engine it was 40 Nm torque followed by further 120 deg bold tighting. This can be done easly with a offset angle socket and impact wrench.
Hey George. Great information in your videos. Had my crankshaft pulley replaced about a week ago and now I have noticed oil leaking behind the pulley. Could this have been caused by the new pulley being fitted or is the oil seal known to fail. Just seems coincidental? Cheers
Hi George, Thanks for the video, very well explained and easy follow😊. I am attempting to change the crankshaft pulley on my own 2008 520d but the bolts were rusted in and the pulley turned a little whilst trying to open the 4 bolts... Will this cause timing issues? Thanks, Marcus.
Any ideas how to lock the crank? On my auto, even putting it in drive and turning off, the crank still rotates when trying to undo the bolts. I don't have any specialist locking tools.
Hello George. These videos are class. Im actually looking at a 318D Touring M sport on a 2011 plate. 72k on the clock. Is it worth getting the newer model 2013 onwards or are these worth taking a chance on? Was the 2.0 diesel unit changed for 2013? Ive heard bmw addressed the timing chain problem in a certain year but cant get any concrete evidence. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi George I bought a X1 with an n47 at 172,000miles detailed as failed water pump. I replaced the water pump, steering pump, belt, pulley wheel, tensioner and ideal pulley wheel. The aux drive still rattles really badly at ideal. I have taken the air con pump apart as far as the bearing and it seems good also the alternator. If the crank was wobbling surly the engine wouldn’t run correctly (car performs and drive well) I suspect the new pulley wheel is faulty? Any thoughts?
George Austers, yes, with a new aftermarket one £70 (don’t know the make it was online from 4-b automotive) it it’s this new wheel that I suspect could be faulty? Its either that or the engine crank shaft? But the engine runs smooth at any RPM other than ideal and has good power?

Am I right in saying you said the 40nm +120degrees is equivalent to aprox 80nm, I don't think I'm getting mine tight enough or they are coming lose because since I changed the pulley im getting an awful noise from the tensioner like a shriek/ticking squelch it doesn't go away by spraying pulleys with a little water ,I can get the noise to go if I turn the size16 tensioner bolt slightly to the left as is to loosen it while the engine is running , so I changed the tensioner thinking it was it & new belt but the sound is still there only at low rpm or when the steering is fully locked and you tap the accelerator, do you know what size those crank bolts are? Or is there any different/upgraded ones I can use?
you are exceptional, you know everything, how can i become like you?

Hello George,
I've installed a "Continental" cranckshaft pully on my E91, and the damm thing squeak all the time.
The belt and tensioner are new, so, not from that.
My mechanic said that, I have eard and seen others "Continental" pulleys giving problems and came deffective.
Do you recommend any other brand who os good like OEM and no history off problems?
Thanks for the help, congrats from Portugal🇵🇹
The one I installed in this video, it’s linked in thr description
Dear George,
Would you please advise me the reference of your impact driver (dewalt) and also about the adapter 1/2’´!
Thanks very much!
This is the impact wrench I use: amzn.to/2T4igdi
George Austers thank you 🙏
How did you lock the CS pulley not to turn when tightening to 80-90nm?
Having the belt on and holding it with my hand was enough👍🏻
Dear George,
How to block the crankshaft pulley to avoid to turn when unscrew or tight the 4 bolts?
I have also automatic gear box.
thanks for your reply

I think you need to buy a crankshaft pulley locking tool to lock it.
@@linli1698 hi 👋🏼 thanks for your message. Have you a link where to buy this tool ? Thanks 🙏

I bought them, but neither has arrived yet.
Here is a video to give an idea on how they are used ruclips.net/video/EF1_vbBpXS0/видео.html
One thing to note: DO NOT ROTATE THE PULLEY COUNTER CLOCKWISE!!!!. It may damage your timing system.

Hi George, got all my parts to do exactly this job but can't undo the crank pulley as it's moving when I try to undo it, any help appreciated pal on how I can stop it rotate??
Either an impact wrench or crankshaft pulley locking tool
@@GeorgeAusters thanks mate, any impact recommendation? Cheers
Does removing the EGR system effect emissions for the MOT?
So will it fail an MOT? Would you have to replace the egr system for the MOT test?
Any ideas how to hold the crank on a 5 series e61 auto tourer. My Crank shaft rubber has disintegrated and I cant get theae bolts out manually Thanks
I managed to get it done. Thank you for the video, it really made it easy for me.
Sorry for late reply, good stuff man. Glad I could help👍🏻
@@johnthompson4969 hi could you tell me how you managed to remove on auto car with four bolts, cheers,
Hey George, I tried to use a long Allen Key to lock the tensioner in place but I doesn't seem to grab anything in the hole when I stick it in. Did you have this issue? I can't get the belt on as it's too tight. Do you have any other suggestions or tips?
No need to lock it in place, just use a breaker bar
@@GeorgeAusters I tried that today but I found it very hard to get it in at an angle to push the tensioner. I was on my own so I'll try with the help of my nephew
Hi george, great channel wondering if you can help me with diagnosing a whining noise. When i remove the belt the noise goes away, so deffo pulley related, i have changed the alternator but noise is still there. Rest of the pulleys are smooth. The noise i can best describe is like when you have an electric interferince with a radio, but mines in the belt area. What do recommend to check of replace. My car also has the electric rack
Update: It was the alternator on its way out
Glad you got it sorted!
@@GeorgeAusters yes all done a while ago now moved on to m57 e90 love watching ur vids. All the best for 2022
Hi George. Well done job mate. Im going to replace turbo to my f31 318d. I just cannot find the torque manual for the screws :/ do u know where I can find it please???
ISTA
Mine just snapped, i have to order for the crank pully which can take 2 weeks, is there a 1 first aid so that i can get this thing moving am stuck upcountry
No you need to replace the pulley BEFORE it fails like in this video👍🏻
Does the engine cover keep the egr completely hidden? Ive heard that if an mot tester can see it is missing you will be failed, however he cannot take off any covers to inspect it.
Pretty much. I’ve never even had my bonnet lifted on an MOT👍🏻
Or you could make a dummy 😊
Awesome guide George! My E60 N47 520d is an automatic, anyway off locking crank pulley to remove the 4 bolts?
Flywheel locking pin
@@GeorgeAusters thanks buddy, will have a look for this
Great video once again. tensioner pulley is as noisy as your was! Am I safe using my impact driver for removing pulley bolts. Just concerned about crankshaft spinning, is it ok to use impact without locking? I’m not sure how I would lock it. Any suggestions very welcome.
Yes you are!
Thanks mate. Final question, do you know what the torque specs are on the crank pulley for final torque?
@@GeorgeAusters will i be able to use impact on a AUTO e60 too without locking it? CHEERS
Another Great Video👍. A quick question for you, when the crankshaft pulley starts to rattle around does it need to be replaced straight ASAP or can you continue driving I. E will it become worse or snap.
Try and inspect it to check for cracking, however sometimes it's hard to see the cracking until its ready to tear off
Does it mean that if I don't have a Degree-Tool, I can simply do first 40 NM then 80-90 NM?
I understood 19 NM

Hi george, is it a same procedure for auto? Or Do i need to lock flywheel to tighten the bolts, i just got myself an impact wrench cheers
Did you buy the same parts I installed?
@@GeorgeAusters no I didnt buy parts myself the mechanics did
@@nathanbrady1763 They may have used a cheap pulley
@@GeorgeAusters hi George I checked now got my mate to start it the noise when the engine starts its coming from the alternator and looks luke the alternator jumps abit(dunno if thats normal) but the noise is from there
Hi mate, I’m hearing a noise on my n47 been about 2 months I have been hearing it now sounds a bit like a flat wheel (it’s not) iv checked for screws etc in tyres nothing in, it’s a bit like a flapping noise been told could be prop shaft or crankshaft bearing maybe? Any ideas at all? Hear it more when the car is slowing down or coming to a stop after driving
Did you find out what it is
Majid Rahman apparently it was my gearbox one of the cogs had a tooth broke an it was causing the noise an eventually it would of completely broke so I bought a part worn gearbox as I couldn’t get new an had it fitted an noise has gone so must have been that I don’t know how the mechanic knew it was that but anyway all good still 2 months later
Did you lock your flywheel?
Done mine today, no need to remove fans or undertrays, abit tight but manageable. I used the holding tool so never needed a impact gun. Mine is a 118D 2010 Auto so no locking the engine via putting in gear😒
Glad to hear you got it done!
Do i have to lock crank or not before removing pulley?
No you don’t
@@GeorgeAusters thank you for your reply. So if the pulley spins a bit while trying to remove it its not an issue? Or better to use impact gun?
Thank you verry good job💪🏽👍🏽
Help george !! I'm working on 320d e90 2011, 184hp changing serpentine belt, ordered gates micro v belt set, original belt only has v grooves 1 side, new kit is Vd both sides and when fitted and tensioner released , new thicker belt touches, must I fit the new pulley tensioner and slave pulley (which are both slightly smaller circumference wheels) ?? Please advice bud
I have a 2011 BMW X1 X20D with the n47 engine, would the parts be the same in my case ?
Hi Dear George,
Thanks for your interesting video.
Could you please give me link or document where to find nm tightening torque (nm)?
Thanks to you very much.

Simo
I got the torque settings for my E90 320d from ISTA+. Search for Vibration Damper in ISTA+. On my N47 engine it was 40 Nm torque followed by further 120 deg bold tighting. This can be done easly with a offset angle socket and impact wrench.
@@abaidmughal1 thank you very much
Hey George. Great information in your videos. Had my crankshaft pulley replaced about a week ago and now I have noticed oil leaking behind the pulley. Could this have been caused by the new pulley being fitted or is the oil seal known to fail. Just seems coincidental?
Cheers
Did you solve it already? Some people do change the seal behind it at the same time the crank pulley is changed
May have damaged the front main seal
Hi George, Thanks for the video, very well explained and easy follow😊. I am attempting to change the crankshaft pulley on my own 2008 520d but the bolts were rusted in and the pulley turned a little whilst trying to open the 4 bolts... Will this cause timing issues?
Thanks, Marcus.
Not recommended to turn the engine backwards
@@GeorgeAusters Thanks George, I'll get the timing checked.
hello, I didn't understand the best, how many kilos the crankshaft tightens
40 Nm + 1/3 of a turn.

Any ideas how to lock the crank? On my auto, even putting it in drive and turning off, the crank still rotates when trying to undo the bolts. I don't have any specialist locking tools.
Allen key in flywheel
Hello George. These videos are class. Im actually looking at a 318D Touring M sport on a 2011 plate. 72k on the clock. Is it worth getting the newer model 2013 onwards or are these worth taking a chance on? Was the 2.0 diesel unit changed for 2013? Ive heard bmw addressed the timing chain problem in a certain year but cant get any concrete evidence. Any guidance would be appreciated.
You don’t explain how you stop the pulley from turning round when you’re turning the four bolts on undoing them. ? I’m trying to do the four bolts and the pulley just keeps turning the engine thank you.
An impact wrench is your best friend👍🏻

How can I lock the crankshaft? i was thinking about unbolting it with a ratchet
By using a flywheel locker pin.
Keep up the good work.
Question for you, I had squeal on steering almost immediately so changed belt, tensioner, fluid and bled it and hydraulic power steering pump but it still squeals and makes a knocking sound only heard from the cockpit. Soon as I switch on the A/C the sound has gone. Any advice?
Nice and clean bay…..
Indeed!
My belt through itself off on start up the other day, didn't realise until 7 miles after getting home, looked inside and crankshaft pulley is at an angle, will my engine be ok?
Pulley probably needs replacing
@George Austers yeah it's strange because I was thinking about having it replaced a month or so ago, then this happens lol, the crankshaft pulley is definitely at fault , do you know if it would of potentially done any damage to engine or crankshaft? Thanks for the reply
Does anyone know how to lock the crankshaft on an auto as it just spins when trying to torque the bolts. Been looking for the correct tool for the n47 but had no joy so far
Have you installed the belt?
@@GeorgeAusters I have mate yeah. Managed to sus it (I do not recommend this as I an due to change the alternator soon) but what I did was have a t50 on the alternator bolt; holding that still, while torquing the crankshaft pulley down. Dodgy!
Are these parts fully compatible with the e90 320d?
If an N47 yes
Hey, George. Is gates better than Febi Bilstein?
thanks and good video, mate.
Both similar quality
Been loving your videos, when you were about to put the new Crankshaft pully in you said something about it been positioned right, is there a certain position it fits back in also on the new belt does it have a certain way it fits , does it have directional arrows or does it not matter ? Oh and out of curiosity how much would you charge to do a timing chain on a 2010 318d e91 with N47 engine 🤣
Hi George, great informative vid as always! 👍🏻 just wanted to ask ... the drive belt u linked 6DPK1817 is for cars 'with air con without electric PAS' ... so ur bmw doesn't have PAS?
Just wanted to double check as my E82 has air con n PAS so i think I'd need a different belt? Thanks
Mine has hydraulic power steering, with a power steering pump👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters thanks for getting back to me 😊 how can u tell if u have electric or hydraulic PAS? I'm not too sure what I have now lol
No problem, real easy - check to see if you have a power steering reservoir like me👍🏻
Hi George
I bought a X1 with an n47 at 172,000miles detailed as failed water pump.
Have you done crank pulley?
George Austers, yes, with a new aftermarket one £70 (don’t know the make it was online from 4-b automotive) it it’s this new wheel that I suspect could be faulty? Its either that or the engine crank shaft? But the engine runs smooth at any RPM other than ideal and has good power?
@@robertnorcott6442 100% mate that is your issue. You cannot use a cheap chinese crank pulley like I said in the video.
