When I was 6 years old my dad threw me in a river in Alaska and I saw what I thought was a great white shark but my dad told me that it was only my imagination from watching Jaws numerous times(I loved that movie) but I was sure it was a shark. As I got older I started to think that maybe it WAS only my imagination. This video has reaffirmed my sighting but it probably was a salmon shark, not a great white.
My dad thought it was funny to throw his young child in any body of water.
He also dangled me over swampy water in Jean lafitte state park in Louisiana when about 4 years old(before kindergarten). The park is composed of numerous walking trails and bridges to go see alligators, snakes, and other swamp creatures. I could have easily wound up as alligator bait. My feet were in the water and I remember screaming and crying because I was terrified. That's so not cool! No wonder I'm deathly afraid of any body of water.
If anyone visits New Orleans, I highly recommend going to Jean Lafitte state park. It's awesome and free! I havent been in a while because it was closed down for years after Katrina. I guess the storm not only flooded the area but may have taken out a lot of the walking trails. I cant remember which trail lead to a high look out over the swamp but it's my favorite one and the best one to see gators.

You probably did see a salmon shark, until a few months ago I didn't know there was even such a shark, they do look a lot like great whites.
Don't let what your dad did make you fearful, just be careful where you swim, know the dangers.
Your dad probably didnt mean you harm, some people have different sense of humor, not saying it was ok but he probably didn't mean for you to get hurt.
Don't be afraid to enjoy the water, just stay safe, stay away from dangerous places, know where your swimming, like what creatures live there,is the water deep? Dont jump into water without first checking and knowing how deep it is because there could be submerged rocks and boulders you might land on and hurt yourself, and learn to be a good swimmer too. Educate yourself about safe swimming and you'll be fine.We always fear what we don't know anything about.
