  • My friend, Joe Parham, loves Border Collies. His family has used dogs on the farm for at least five generations in America and he works Border Collies on his own farm to herd cattle and sheep. Joe often shares his passion for the breed by doing public demonstrations where he puts his dogs through their paces herding sheep and duck to the delight of audiences.
The Border Collie’s lineage can be traced back to Old Hemp, a sheepdog born in 1893 on the farm of Adam Telfer in Northumberland, an English county on the border with Scotland. His skills were so admired he was bred often and is credited with more than 200 offspring. Border collies are considered one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. They heard using their “eye,” which means staring intently and quietly to control livestock. The white markings we associate with them are often a preferred trait, but some types of border collies do not share these distinctive patches of fur.
In this episode, you’ll see why Border Collies are such popular and admired animals. We’ll follow Joe Parham to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, and to the Asheville Celtic Festival and watch as he demonstrates the agility and abilities of his dogs, Keko and Iggy. We also sit down with Joe as he shares a bit about the history of the breed, why he admires these dogs and loves training and working with them.
