STORY
The scene was deep in the hills of the Appalachia, at the Tilley Bend Church.
Elizabeth Tilley Bradley, a Creek witch doctor, was feared by all in the settlement. There was a feud between two prominant families, which escalated into a shooting at the church. A Tilley preacher and the sister who married into the Tilley family, along with other congregants, were killed.
The Tilley’s retaliated by sneaking into Stanley gap in the dead of night and killed several men while they slept, including the Stanley that married the second daughter.
Elizabeth cursed them all.
After that, much worse events would unfold.

This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

The story you tell is almost identical to some she told me! She talked about walking down dirt roads and hearing babies crying, but, no baby was to be seen! She told me that her daughter liked this boy, and, Mom didn't think the daughter should be serious about any boy, so, she cursed his car! She told him, as she walked around it, that it would not start, no matter what he did. So, to appease her, he, the daughter, and Mom sat down and talked about how the young couple felt about each other. After some time, they were going to go somewhere (she told me, I forgot) and the car still wouldn't start. She walked up to the car, tapped on the hood and told the car to start, and it did! The couple is still married today, and, Mom passed away back in the early 80's. One thing I noticed about her. She had real tiny/beady looking eyes that could cut through you if she got mad at you! I can't help but smile, remembering her!

Babies crying can be a scared rabbit or racoon
When I lived in Georgia I heard a baby crying outside in the night. It wasn't a baby though, it was a cougar. Big cats make noises that draw People in. I heard a wild cat say "Hello".

I used to live around that area for 13 years and there’s a lot of folklore and strange mysteries in those mountains.
Georgia is a meltingpots for haunted places I heard.

I’m just glad that I’m the 13 years I lived there, I never saw anything strange or scary. The most haunted places, and things I ever saw was when I lived in Maryland. There’s a lot of paranormal happenings that go on throughout the entire state.

A very creepy and haunting story Ron. Everything about the story is creepy from the people, the old tree, the old church and the cemetery is all creepy. I think I would not want to be there all by myself during the day. What a creepy place. I love hearing about your witch stories. Thanks 👍
Nothing creepy about it. Infant mortality rates in the Appalachian Mountains was horrendous for hundreds of years due to the almost complete lack of any medical care. I have an old family cemetery on my property and it’s filled with gravestones of children. Influenza,polio, and other diseases wreaked havoc on newborns and toddlers.
If it’s true that they buried the self proclaimed witch facing west they did so because they believe that one day Jesus Christ will split the Eastern sky and return for his own. Facing her body west would’ve likely been a testimony to others that she died and went to Hell.

I have gone there at night quiet a few times. But I have heard some stories back in the day. I have lived here all my life. It is beautiful here.
Ever notice how even in a noisy city entering a cemetery seems to mute noise, almost like entering another world. This isn't a bad thing as I find it peaceful
This is true I set monuments in cemeterys for five years soon as u go into a grave yard if u don't have your mind on outside sounds it seems like u walk into a room and close a door and the quit down it's sort of crossing the veil or something but it's true I've tried to tell folks about that but when they try it they keep there mind on the noise and it won't work like that
It's the hollowed out ground. It seems that plus the occupants of said ground creates a form of insulation of sorts. Like soundproofing a space.
Not at the graveyard near VSU lol but Hickory Springs in South Ga is very relaxing... Sadly you can't drive through at night ... But it's still beautiful driving by during the day or night
What I also notice is the strong, heavy, thick feeling of grief and death in funeral homes. I can barely stay longer than 15-20 minutes.
@@davidcooley5135 every cemetery I've ever gone into has that gone has that same hushed other worldly feel. It's like walking into a place from an alternate reality that has nothing to do with what we call reality
IMO a most peaceful final resting place with nature's sounds flowing in the background. Another good yet haunting story of the Appalachian past. Thanks for that trip.
Jase and Elizabeth were my Great-Great Grandparents. I know that I’m part-Creek from this side of my family, but I’ve never been able to satisfactorily determine the “witch theory”. Interesting, though.
We’ve got a witch legend here too man if you ever want to come to Wythe county in swva it out in a place called Crawfish. There was a witch there too and she was treated terrible but I won’t spoil it you can look it up… but yeah the Appalachian mountains are full of beauty and magic and a bit of terror lol I love living here!!! Also I and my friends are mountain witches - most of us are very nice and know a ton about the use of herbs as home remedies but we aren’t usually nasty tempered to folks and we sure would never hurt babies! But the mountain witches are still here!!! 😂

I have always loved the states like Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North & South Carolina, Arkansas,with the mountains & hills,creeks, springs,& rivers! The trees,able to grow gardens & orchards,berries,the flowers. Beautiful wild vegetation & wild animals & birds.
This is home ~ my husband built five house on Lake Blueridge.
I’m originally from Atlanta and he had to convince me to move here.
I’m actually using his phone.
Sadly, he died unexpectedly but he’s in Heaven.

A Grave yard is part of the church yard. A cemetery stands alone could be a family cemetery or military etc...

I from this area, and it the legend is that if you run around the Tilley Bend Church 3 times, you will see the Tilley Bend Witch. Definitely a place where teenagers like to go on Halloween.

Fun fact for those that don't know.. Graves face East so the dead can witness the sunrise and " the return of Christ".. I guess they faced her West because they thought she was a witch

I just got to watch this thriller. Great story. Elizabeth died in 1905 and her sister in-law was in 1906. Same days. Both hung same tree. The husband facing west too?

These women were midwives who understood the medicinal benefits of local plants. They were the only medical personnel for hundreds of years!
Most graves in Appalachia face the East because Jesus is to return from the East. Pointing West would deny you seeing His return and is a form of condemnation. A Church cemetery is considered sacred ground and holds evil from rising.
I'm from the Appalachian mountains. A lot of superstitions still exist to this day as you get further into the mountains.

My mother is a Stanley from the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia where her previous relative's were from the McCoy clan & had married into the Stanley's. There's a lot old tales that she'd tell me about all sorts of things taking place way back in those coal mining towns & hollars. Very interesting story Ron, thanks for sharing another awesome story once again.

Most of the infant and children deaths during that time were due to influenza epidemic. Great story telling though, come to WNC for more creepy stories and cemeteries...
If you ever come to Va Beach we have Grace Sherwood the Pungo Withch. She has 2 memorials in the area. My doctors office is next to her statue and another cenotaph is at a old church cemetery I believe. She is the only person to survive the sentence of drowning to prove she was a watch or not and lived to be 80!
We also have Carl Beashier the black navy driver who’s Stories told in the movie Men of Honor. He’s buried across from my neighborhood and I purposely buried my mother near him so she would always be easy to find and because she loved the movie..

Dated a Sicilian girl once and her mother would go to a Jamaican witch doctor to cast spells and give readings. The guy was well known in Gary Indiana and feared. It was said if he cursed you he could kill you and was a friend of satan and extremely powerful. I saw him from a distance once and he had eyes as
black as a shark. I was over one day visiting my girlfriend and in the back room with her watching TV and she told me he was over getting a reading. My dad was a Christian and had warned me of the occult. I quietly said the lords prayer and asked for intervention for protection. Within 60 seconds her mom came running into the back saying he had to leave now and was sweating and extremely agitated and ran out the door and drove off not even stopping to receive payment for his reading. On the way out the door he said that young man never have me come over when that young man is here!!! And yelled I'm leaving!!! In the movies they have you think satan is more powerful than Jesus Christ but I ask you this? Why would a famous practitioner of the dark arts run out the door like a little girl from a young man who at the time didn't know Jesus but called upon him in a time of need? If your a Christian they have nothing on you because you are redeemed. They see the light and flee like the rats they are. I wasn't even a Christian at the time and he came to protect me. I ask you. Who is more powerful...Lol.
My great great grandma was a full blooded Cherokee medicine woman married to a white man. They lived in Brevard NC and she had an apron with many pockets that held her roots, herbs, bark, leaves and such that she used for healing. Unfortunately she died while teaching my grandma. i know only a few things she passed down.

Benjamin Tilley, the founder of the church was my 2x great grandfather. I have attended decoration at that church since I was an infant. The reason for the burial facing west is because in cemetaries bodies are facaing east so that they can see Jesus rising in the east when he come back as stated in the Bible. If she was a "witch" they would have buried her in the opposite direction. They church has changed over the years. It was originally a white structure and was added onto over a decade ago. Before that there was no indoor plumbing and visitors had to use an outhouse back in the woods. Before the siding that is there now, you could see the bullet holes on the outside of the structure. The infant death rate being high is typical for Appalachia beause of lack of medical care and disease. Almost all mountain cemetaries will have many infant graves. If I am not mistaken Elizabeth was the daughter of Benjamin. My great grandmother Dovie Tilley Long (Benjamin's daughter) isnot buried there although her husband Peter is. Thanks for the story.

My great Aunt was a healer and seer! She was never called a witch doctor, thank goodness. I still have her healing recipes made from natural ingredients from the forest. My sister and I are empathetic. We see & feel things, shapes & people that others do not. The babies died probably due to some virus, bad water, or something invested by the mother. Sanitation was not the best back then. Spells are only spells if you believe in them. Keep your eyes always on Jesus. Great series Ron.Good to be out traveling

An undeserved curse will not land on the intended victims. I agree that the babies died from disease due to poor sanitation. Infant mortality was very high back then, as was the likelihood of the mother dying from the birthing process.
I live in Blue Ridge and it's a right of passage to go out and visit Tilley Bend at night. Awesome to see someone talking about it.
That'll be my next mountain stay, what a cool town, and only a couple hours away from me (upstate sc). Glad I found this video as one night I'll have to venture to the church.
Thank You on mentioning our Creek Triibe.Very true my Tama Lower Muskogee tribe in Bainbridge Ga.Are still farmers to this day.My late mother was a Creek Medicine woman who worked with herbs and healed.We did good things.Modern Medicine till this day uses 200 herbs from our native peoples teachings.Very true up till the 1960s fear still instilled in our native peoples of hangings.
Absolutely amazing history finally being revealed about your ancestors and all of the kingdoms and cultures that eventually made up the Creek peoples. As a lifelong history buff, There was so much missing and many things lied about the SE Native Americans. There are still descendants in that area of Coosa Creek people that because of intermarriage were not swept up in the Trail of Tears. Rob in GA.

@@robertbates6057 My Mama told stories of how her Great Great Grandmother would not be a part of the Trail of Tears because she feared the Government. Mama has since passed, and I so wish I could have those conversations again. We are Scotch-Irish and either Cherokee or Creek.

I agree the mortality rate for infants would have been impacted by the availability of nutrition, sanitation etc and I am guessing these were not people with access to much and religion and superstition would have had a strong hold in these people, sad story but well told.
Also, the very small gene pool in such a small community may have caused some form of congenital illnesses in the babies.

I have gone by this church lots of times on my way to rocky point just a mile or 2 past the church! I had never heard about this till now! There’s another grave yard straight across the lake from rocky point that I have kin folk buried in! My grandmother was a Stanley that grew up around the Dial area!
I always enjoy hearing “Hey Gang….” Appalachian folklore is rich in superstition and often embellished. Though there may be discrepancies, (I’m a little puzzled by the dates and Elizabeth’s age), this story is intriguing, tragic and chilling.

Reality is stranger than fiction. When you know the truth about many things and speak of it, you get labeled crazy. There are things out there that you don't want to encounter. There really is no need to embellish things when the truth is so hard to believe.

I did a family tree and it was a headache. My mom's family was from town in the Blue Ridges. Sometimes births weren't recorded but baptism dates were, for example but sometimes there would be no record of people. I'm like, I know they existed, I have photos! Haha.

I wonder who took them and why? Clyde Barrow's headstone used to get stolen every year until they fixed it so it couldn't be moved. College prank.
On one side of family was an Irish granny considered to have premonitions and "second sight" so she was called a seer/psychic. On the other side of my family was a Cherokee granny who used herbs to heal folks and also defined meanings of dreams. We also had generations of Irish diviners who found water, psychics who foretold events, and NUMEROUS ghost stories.

Same! That’s where our Scotch-Irish surname came from, Caldwell or Coldwell. Came from my ancestors careers as using divining rods effectively.

That's beautiful country and the graveyard is eerie, I didn't feel like you were alone while you filmed there. The story is sad because those baby deaths may not have had anything to do with a spoken curse, there were so many undiagnosed diseases, etc in those times. Many women got mislabeled as a witch, often I think they were just convenient scapegoats for angry or frightened villagers. Whatever was going on there back then, I hope that all are now resting in peace.
I worked at a historical house museum for many years. My coworkers and I discussed the fact that so little was known about food allergies/sensitivities at this time. We talked about the fact that women may have unknowingly fed infants things they were allergic to. Also, while nursing a baby, a woman may have eaten an allergen and passed it on to baby through the milk. This could have accounted for some seemingly random infant/young child deaths. Genetics could have played a role as well. My grandfather on mom's side had 5 dead infant sisters, which we think was result of a genetic defect in the female chromosome
Many using natural herbs were called witches. However, there are people can put curses on you. Shield of God protects.
@@devong7124 I live in the south ... in Mississippi. New Orleans is known for voodoo practice even now and it seems, it is a cursed city! I'm sure there are some Christians live there as well though.

I just read that there are about a dozen small stones at the very back of that graveyard, many unmarked, that are the graves of the stillborn babies.
@@lovealllife748 the babies should be treated same as an 80yo who died,or a 20yo!! Not burned or flushed down a toilet!! Have a name and funeral!! I heard that if an unborn
baby is 5mon to 6mon term or more they have to have a funeral,the law. Don't know now how it is.

I live in Hendersonville NC and native of these mountains and these mountains are not for the faint hearted there is a lot of history and a lot of spirits here

I love Blue Ridge. I live an hour away from it. It's so beautiful. I also have family in Eastern Kentucky, the hollers, and have heard of Appalachian Witches from there as well.
Born and raised in Appalachian Mts. . Beautiful country and the best people you'll ever meet . Just don't mess with their families. It's changed alot in the past few years , sadly

Really spooky story Ron. Loved it. Wow. Elizabeth Bradley publicly putting a curse on the townsfolk and then the infants started dying. Amazing how the townsfolk thought it must be witchcraft and then for them to hang her but even more sad was that the deaths of the infants continued. I wonder what caused all their deaths. Very sad. May they and all the townsfolk be at peace. What a beautiful location the cemetery is set in. I have been to the appalachian mountains. Oh the blue ridge mountains. They didn't mess around back then. I feel like it was scary to be living in those days. Someone just had to accuse a person of being a witch and their days were numbered .... and even their families too. Happy to be living in these times when I get to hear the stories and not live them.

Fascinating Story from the past. Off subject but when I was a young child I used to dream I could fly. I remember opening my bedroom window which was on the second story of the house we were renting when my Father was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas and I'd launch myself to begin my flying journey. Your opening video reminds me of those dreams because my view was just like it.
Huh! I always used to dream that I was flying.. Until I was about 14yo, then it just stopped. I miss those dreams, and yes - the drone shots reminds me of my dreams of flight too!

The Barberton Greenstone Mountains in South Africa. I read these are the oldest in the world. But these mountains are also very old. This is a very good video!
I live in SA and had been visiting family near Barberton many a time. I will have to read up about the Greenstone Mountains. Should be very interesting.
