WILL YOU HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR? It Starts With A Woodpile, But It Don't End There. FOA Ep.21

- Throughout the fall and winter men and women gather in this mountain community to help their neighbors. Every few weeks they will gather on a Saturday morning, no matter the weather, to cut, split, and chop firewood and load it on trucks and trailers to deliver to those in need.
The wood ministry of the Big Laurel section in Madison County, NC, is an amazing activity. It starts with an annual fundraising event, followed up with workdays throughout the winter where people get together to saw and split wood. Then they deliver it in their pickup trucks to people who are older, disabled, or otherwise not able to cut their own so they will have firewood for the winter to heat their homes.
In this episode we spend a day at the log yard as folks process logs into split firewood and load it to to take to folks in their community and beyond. We talk to the people involved with this wood ministry and to others who discuss what it means to be of service to one’s community. What started as a small group helping a neighbor get firewood for the winter, has grown to hundreds of people working together to provide this life-sustaining service for their community.
This inspiring and heartwarming activity is a wonderful example of being in service to others and events like this are part of a larger network of community support where neighbors help each other. One person might fix a dish to take to a family who has lost a loved one, while another picks up groceries for a friend who can no longer drive.
Anyone interested in helping support this great service can send donations to Foster Creek Baptist Church, 10710 Big Laurel Rd, Marshall, NC, 28753. For additional information on how you can help, contact Eldridge English at 828-774-4899 (North Carolina).

My daddy always taught us years ago, you always pay forward when you can, help without being asked and don’t you dare take a dime. It sure made us who we are today
Thats a great philosophy of life. Sounds like a good role model.
I knew of a man who cut the tops off fence posts around his yard for wood. I wasn't around him at the time, but men from church went and cut him some wood. Someone wondered why they had to when he had two teenage grandsons who could have.
Sometimes it is little things people need help with; raking leaves, changing a light bulb, carrying out the trash, sweeping off the porch.
Little things do matter. Buster put it well in the video. So great to hear from you and thanks for sharing that story. Keep coming back. You are always welcome.
Thats a fascinating story. Its easy to get overwhelmed when there are so many needs in the world, but small acts of kindness can make a huge difference in a person's life.
I miss wood heat. It soaks in my bones a lot better than anything else
Randle, I hope you are well my friend. I know what you mean about a wood fire. There is nothing better. I like the smell of wood smoke. It always takes me back home.

My Church and neighbors from S.E. Guilford County NC (Mt Hope Community) helped Me and my family out with wood when I was sick and couldn't cut wood to heat my house back in 2005. God Bless you all! Great Ministry
They do a wonderful service and I'm so glad to hear you had help when you needed it, too.
This is amazing how everyone is supposed to be to each other i would give anything to live around amazing people like this ❤❤
Finding these folks was a surprise in a way. I had heard about the operation but had no idea how widespread there ability to help is. They are truely generous with their time and willingness to help others.
I live in far north California, and believe me, it's not the Bible belt. One day the people will humble themselves and repent. But it will never be like the south.
I love me some North Carolina Mountains! It is beautiful where you live too.
Looks like you're all set to face the perilous times coming. God and His love in your community, willingness, serving.
Elizabeth, they are a great group of folks who look out for each other and help wherever they can. We can all hope to live in such a community.
Awesome story, families and neighbors being there one another. Blessings come from unexpected challenges, bless them❤

All teens should have to split at least 2 or 3 cord every year, even if you don't burn wood.
Lots of life lessons to be learned while splitting and stacking wood. 😅
Mister, you're doing a great job. Love your photos!!! Absolutely beautiful. Regards from far north California
