    Hi sir and great video, really appreciate you doing all this for all of us. Just a question, so u know for the inspector calls question, is it true that there is always a choice between a character question and always a theme question. As for poetry, i am planning to revise by essentially pairing up all the poems, and then just writing model answers and hoping that i can recall them on the day of the exam. That way whatever the poem, ill have a model answer ready. Is this a good strategy? Only doing it as i am limited on time. Only have 1 day left for poetry allocated in my revision timetable.

    Hi Mr Salles, thank you for the video as always. You have been of great help for me especially since i really dont enjoy english at all, maybe due to the layout of exams, etc. I have a question though to do with the power and conflict poetry essay guide that i have bought. I understand that the essays are comparison essays for each pair of poems, which you have already paired up in the book in long and short versions. However from what i see, it's been set out so that in each essay it analyses a single poem, before moving onto the next and analysing it in its own respect without much comparison. Are we supposed to rewrite them as comparative essays ourselves or am i missing something?

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  Год назад +1

      No, if you look at what I write about the second poem, it always compares back to the first. This is very much the easiest way to compare. However, it is perfectly possible to compare a point from one poem, with a point from the next, for all your points. Which ever method you prefer works. Thanks for buying the book!

      @someone...000 Год назад +1

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish Ohhhhhh, ok thank you mr salles. I was confused since the way we've been taught is to embed your comparison throughout your answer, and we've been told that's the method that gets more marks, which always annoyed me a little bit as it is somewhat difficult to do. Thanks so much sir, really appreciate all of this. Just hope i do well in the exams - really dreading english literature.

    I dont know whether its relevant but for mrs birling ive always had this idea that her refuses eva/daisy was decently justified
    Because imagine someone comes to your charity and their name is exactly as yours and they are using it mockingly
    Seems reasonable to refuse even if she is in need

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  Год назад +1

      Does she use it mockingly? And is it really justification for refusing charity? I do think there is some justification for Mrs Burling‘s reaction, because it is clear that Eva has lied to her. This is Priestley’s point. Unemployment benefit is not given to people, simply because they have good moral character, it is given to them because they need it in order to survive. The moral choice of society outweighs the moral choice of the individual.

      practice questions always help.
      for lit: try to get quotes that can be linked to all themes/characters, choose and annotate ur quotes the night before and get them well in ur head.
      for lang: just practice practice and practice, doing this allows u to familiarize urself with what the questions are asking for, as they are generally the same.
      also, always read the questions first, then read the stories because then u would be able to highlight any parts of the story that u can use for the questions.

    Hello, I am desperate for help. I am sitting 2023 gcse
    Could someone please have a look and give me some comment ? It will be of great help to me. 🙏
    In Priestley's allegorical morality play, Priestley uses the contrast of the exploitation on lower class by upper class due to higher statues and more privilege, to compare with hardworking attitude of the lower class which builds up a responsible and good society, to teach the Edwardian audience, especially the upper class to take up social responsibility to build up a more fair and equal society, preventing tragedy like the ‘titanic’.
    One of the main characters, Mr. Birling, is presented as an ignorant character who is blinded by the ridiculous capitalist views. In stave 1, when Mr. Birling refers to the community as ‘bees in a hive’ if the people are all ‘mixed up together’, we can see that Mr. Birling is mocking the proletariat by using zoomorphism and degrading them as ‘bees’. However, his words are very ironic as ‘bees’ are very hardworking, helping each other to build a strong community, which are all very excellent qualities that lead to a better life for all of them. ‘Bees in a hive’ also symbolizes the working class, as they are the fundamental part in the society, and they work hard for capitalism so capitalism gains ‘a higher profit’, including Mr. Birling. However, here we can see that Mr. Birling is totally dismissive of the working class and calls the community ‘nonsense’. Besides, Inspector Goole then refers the death of Eva Smith as caused by ‘a chain of event’. This shows how little event of mistreatment can have a devastative consequence, Eva’s suicide, which is caused by the unimportance put on Eva by the Birlings and Gerald, including low wage, firing Eva just because of jealousy of beauty, sexual exploitation, and refusal of help. The actions all Birlings and Gerald have done show that they are totally uncared for by Eva as she is just a ‘girl from that class’. In addition, the symbolism’ a chain of events’ can also present the effect of lower class can have on upper class, if the lower class is the start in the ‘chain’, they can affect all the ‘events’ faced by the upper class afterwards .Priestley uses the construct of the Birlings and Gerald, as a representation of the bourgeoisie, presenting how ignorant they are as they think the working class is unimportant, though in fact the working class has huge importance to them. Perhaps Priestley wants the 1945 Edwardian audience to be complete distasted with the working class, and support for the Labour Party in the 1945 election, to bring an equality in the society which the working class can gain more respect and importance despite their low status.
    Priestley also conveys the hierarchy which is built by the upper class to get higher profit, reflected by Mr. Birling’s line ‘it’s my duty to keep cost down’, can have destructive result on all the people in the society. The business noun ‘duty’ is almost dehumanizing the lower class, showing that the upper class utterly doesn’t care about the lower class who are just a tool to get more money for them, to enjoy life no matter how terrible the working condition of lower class is. One of the consequences of the unimportance put on lower class is the ‘Titantic’ which is seen as ‘totally unsinkable’ in the eye of Mr. Birling. This totally shows how ignorant and ridiculous Mr. Birling is through the dramatic irony, making the Edwardian distrusts him and distastes the capitalist views, and incline towards Priestley’s socialist view to be ‘bees in the hive’ and helping each other's. Also, the tragedy of the ‘Titanic’ sinking later is a symbolism of the idea that the society will be also sunken and destroyed if the hierarchy is maintained, just like the three decks for upper, middle, and lower classes in the ‘Titanic’. In addition, Priestley is teaching the Edwardian audience to work to reduce the difference between gap in society by paying them high wage and treating them better, and the most important thing is changing their view and get rid of ‘pink, intimate light’ which symbolizes ignorance with Inspector Goole as a mouthpiece. The Inspector said, ‘if men doesn't learn the lesson’, the society will end in ‘fire and blood and anguish’. Th violence imagery is an allusion to the Bible and symbolizing the world wars, presenting if upper class doesn’t change, more wars will be caused and eventually lead to the destruction of society. Perhaps Priestley is teaching the Edwardian audience that their views and perspective on the working class must be changed, that they should value the working class better and put more importance on them, to achieve a peaceful society and get rid of any unnecessary life loss.
