This is the best visual I've come across on needle depth compared to the layers of the skin. Now I just need to figure out hand speed/voltage and I'll be golden. Thanks for the awesome video!
The epidermis varies in thickness throughout your body. In areas of skin that experience a lot of use, like the soles of your feet and the palms of your hands, the epidermis is thicker. These areas can be as thick as 1.5 millimeters, which is about as thick as two credit cards stacked together. Eyelids The epidermis is only about 0.05 millimeters thick, which is roughly the same thickness as a sheet of copy paper.
Amazing!!! Thanks for one of the BEST explanations regarding needle depth... I struggled with something and got answers from this video that I really needed... Thanks sooooo much!!!

I got to say this is a pretty good video, I bought a machine not that long ago mainly to give myself a couple of tatts. I was pretty bugged out about depth and all that and the practice skins ppl are talking about you should use are a little pricey for me at the moment, but I spent like 2 something on some bananas so I figured let's try this. I used one unpeeled and cut it to work on getting a feel and visual for how deep the needle should be going, then covered the whole thing with ink trying to get my hand used to it and pulling lines and doing some shapes. Then I used the peels off of eaten ones to keep practicing and I gotta say I feel kinda confident in moving to my thigh and trying some lines and a basic design. I definitely got more I need to know about like needles, shading and so on, but like I said I'm feeling confident that I can try the basics on my skin probably without blow outs. So yeah thanks
Thank you so much for all the videos! I've decided to change my career and learning to be a semi-permanent make up artist and your videos have been an amazing help (especially the ones on depth and blowouts). Bananas are great and cheap way of learning the correct depth - I've been doing them for my assignments together with balloons (for pressure control during shading). I still have a lot of practice ahead but looking forward to it. Keep up the great work!
@@johnwing8234 I mean they are separate exercises. You just blow the balloon and tattoo on the surface trying not to pop it. This one's not about the depth but to teach you to put the same pressure on the needle throughout the swing during shading for nice and even shading - most people tend to press a bit harder at the beginning of the swing and that's when balloon pops, not sure if that makes sense.

How does epidermis depth of the palms & feet differ in depth, from that of most other body/skin surfaces? However, I am unclear on how deep the needle should go to get to the dermis through the palms or souls of the feet, seeing as how the turnover rate is so high in those places, & that layer of the lower epidermis must be passed to get to the dermis.

Hey 😊 Tha k you so much for all your videos, they help me a lot! I've got a question: some artists saying you'll feel it when you hit the right depth. How does that feel on the machine? And why doesn't I get any ink unte my skin? I'm using a 3rl with 6,5 v and 4,2 stroke. After pulling a line and swiping over, there's no ink inside the skin. What am I doing wrong? 😐
This was a wonderful demonstration thank you! Just curious, i find myself having to go a little deeper on fake skins to get appropriate saturation for a single pass line, is this pretty typical? Human skin seems to take the ink a lot easier
Great video very informative I'm having an issue with I guess only hitting the epidermis at some spots and I cannot visually tell until I have to touch up the tattoo because it fell out do you have any advice on how to tell
Hey Daniel thank You so much for This Video but i have a question , is this Same Processing when You shading ? Sorry for that but iam learning 😅 so when i shading i always hast to try hitting the dermis i mean shading be really scratchy 😅😅😅 i Hope you know what i mean
Just got a wormhole wtk086 bro it is actually pretty good bro but one thing I’m wondering is why does the ink not stay? On the fake skin n also it’s element nighthawk black
Thats awesome! I am excited for you! What fake skin are you using? It could be a number of things. It is a bit hard to say because I can not see your work. You can send me an email of your image so I can elaborate more for you to info@danielyuck.com Some common reasons could be hand speed and voltage, others can be the sake skin type, needle depth, it is almost impossible to answer accurately.
When shading & doing black and grey, are you still trying to get the same depth? Or are you staying out on the epidermis in some spots so it fades or lightens up?
I think my comment got spam filtered bc I was trying to link an image, but I wanted to ask if the 1.5mm average everyone mentions is the start of the dermis, the center, or the end of the dermis? Since it's a layer with depth, I wasn't sure :o
Since every skin is not the same, the depth of the dermis can be 1.5-2mm, but in some areas where the skin is thinner it might not even be that deep, you can know it when the needle breaks the skin by the sound it makes
Ahhh I apologize about that! I would say @PsykotikTattoo is accurate. I would say going about 1.5mm-2mm from the top of the skin is how I look at it. Everyone is different and every spot has a different depth. I would recommend to invest into some fake skins to get comfortable with the idea of finding the dermis. I also made a full in depth video on how to go about finding the dermis and I will link that to you below. Finding The Dermis ruclips.net/video/Iu22AUUnppM/видео.html Should you have any questions drop a comment.
sir,,,what is the needle debth and pressure? it is said that its all abt pressure of the machine and needle onto the skin,,then if i increas ethe pressure for darkness bviousely the needle debth is increased more than the required debth...then how? whats the difference between needle debth and pressure?
I understand this depth for lining but when shading why is this depth not consistent? Artist say the ink falls out if it’s not deep enough so why does depth not apply to shading? I hope this question isn’t too confusing. 👍
Is it a thing to have your needle depth out perfectly, say 1.6-1.75ish mm and you can somewhat almost lightly drag the cartridge against the skin? Or that just not a very sanitary way of doing it? By the way... this is an amazing helpful video. Your awesome dude
So I have a question sometimes my lines are skinny & sometimes there thick does the skinny lines happen from me not going deep enough? & in your opinion what’s the best needle for smaller line tattoos?
Ahh for me when I have experienced fluctuations in my lines it would typically be because my needle depth varied on that line. Keep in mind there can be other reasons why the line is not consistent but typically it can be caused by the inconsistency. The deeper the needle goes the thicker the line will be, the lighter we go the thinner the line is and remains "truer" to the configuration. For me personally I haven't really come across a smaller needle I don't like. I would say Quelle Needles, CNC Police are some that come to mind. CNC Police Needles amzn.to/3X7yuC3 Quelle Needles amzn.to/3D25h3F How small of a needle are we talking tho?
Thank you for the feedback and support! I appreciate you. I made a video a bit ago on how to find the dermis in which I will link for you below. I do touch base more about finding the dermis and how I go about doing so in this video. Should you have any questions at all don't hesitate to let me know. Finding The Dermis ruclips.net/video/Iu22AUUnppM/видео.html
Thats a tricky question to answer! I would say there is no 1 number depth as everyone is going to be different. Some may have smaller hands which may have thinner skin on the fingers, some have larger hands which may result in thicker skin. I recently made a video sharing how I go about tattooing fingers. I will link it for you below. How To Tattoo Fingers ruclips.net/video/VCRSm35Ngw0/видео.htmlsi=DnL6F6rR5MQp1Mau
I think my hawkink cartridges may be pushing the needle out a bit too far. Is there a fix for that or will I have to just buy new ones? Thank you sm! Your videos are extremely useful for me i practice one of your designs everyday I've started having to repeat some.
Thank you for the kind feedback and support! I appreciate you. I think it would vary and depend on the performance you're getting when hanging your needle out. Are you getting any needle wobbles?
@@DanielYuck not any more wobbles than when I was working with the tubes and needles on my rotary, but when I tattoo on human skin it hurts more and seems to be a lot more irritated. And of course! Your videos have been immensely helpful in my journey.
I've watched a few different videos about needle depth that I'm not going to name but they always just say "Hey, hit the dermis" as a summing up of the video... they don't actually explain how deep that may be in relation to things we might already know like coins and bananas This video was great because it related it to real world objects that pretty much EVERYONE has handled at some point. Instead of just saying "Hit about 1.5 to 2mm below the skin on average but it varies where you go

what is Usual Voltage for lining and for Shading????
I understand this depth for lining but when shading why is this depth not consistent? Artist say the ink falls out if it’s not deep enough so why does depth not apply to shading? I hope this question isn’t too confusing. 👍
Whst happen if I hit the skin epidemis first time , demise second time 🤔🙏 ?

How small of a needle are we talking tho?
Nothing to small just enough to do hand tattoos & smaller also what sizes do you use like my base right now I’m using 1205RL from padieoe
@@DanielYuck oh also I forgot to mention I hang out my needle I don’t like riding the tube or not seeing where I’m going with my lines
when blowing out skin do you still hear the sizzle or breaking of the skin?
This is amazing
Wish you would have talked about sound and vibration when hitting the dermis. Other wise great Job thx for all you do
He did in an earlier video about needle depth :)
Thank you for the feedback and support!
I appreciate you.
I made a video a bit ago on how to find the dermis in which I will link for you below. I do touch base more about finding the dermis and how I go about doing so in this video. Should you have any questions at all don't hesitate to let me know.

@@biroka96 Thank you so much! I appreciate your response.
What would be the depth for fingers i have pretty skinny fingers
Thats a tricky question to answer! I would say there is no 1 number depth as everyone is going to be different. Some may have smaller hands which may have thinner skin on the fingers, some have larger hands which may result in thicker skin.
I recently made a video sharing how I go about tattooing fingers. I will link it for you below.

This is better than most apprenticeships! 🤣
I've watched a few different videos about needle depth that I'm not going to name but they always just say "Hey, hit the dermis" as a summing up of the video... they don't actually explain how deep that may be in relation to things we might already know like coins and bananas
This video was great because it related it to real world objects that pretty much EVERYONE has handled at some point. Instead of just saying "Hit about 1.5 to 2mm below the skin on average but it varies where you go
Taking one for the team and doing a self blow out just to be a good teacher!! Next level video thank you #DanielYuck
Bro.. What needle is best for filling and lining
