    gave me interest in taking my 1979 engine off the frame. My problem is loss of compression. Ive got everything off the engine but my manual states to open the primary. I saw you with a hand full of wires and I have no idea where those came from. My manual speaks of the kill switch wire as the only thing needing to be released within the primary. Looks like I have to purchase a Spanner. But I'm doing good so far, thanks

    I've actually never heard of anyone outside the British Isles using Haynes Manuals.
    I guess I learn something new everyday.

      I couldn't imagine owning a bike without a Haynes Manual. All my friends use one as well. But maybe that's because most Danes are pretty good at reading/speaking English. I don't know how people in countries where English is hardly used, would get by. I don't think they make Haynes in other languages ...but I may be mistaken

    Nice work. That's half the battle done. I've done something similar on a 4-stroke 125, but left the engine in situ rather than removed it. To take it apart to reach the piston and rings, you just remove the valve cover then unbolt the cylinder head, then lift the barrel up and out, etc.. Putting it back together is where you have to be conscientious. Make sure you have a torque wrench and all the torque settings to hand, a new cylinder head gasket, base gasket, silicon sealant, exhaust gasket and a manifold gasket (for good measure). When replacing rings, follow the Haynes instructions on stuffing the piston mouth and inserting gudgeon pin, and put the rings in, in the right order. Make sure mating surfaces are spotless (use metal polish if necessary) when reassembling. I don't think you mentioned where your oil leak is coming from. If it's the valve cover, that gasket should be reusable and it should be possible to remove it, clean it up, prime it with some oil, then stick it back on. An oil leak coming from there is easily fixed with a fresh gasket.

      thanks :-) yeah, I have my torque wrench and complete gasket set ready :-D I,m not exactly sure where the leak is coming from. there was just oil everywhere, but I think its the mating surface between the rocker box and the head. there's no gasket from the factory, but my other friends have just used liquid gasket there, and that seems to work. I'm gonna try to replace all the gaskets I can get to :-)

      That's going to be a sweet bike once you've fixed it up. Can't wait to see it running. I assume you're going to set the valve clearances while the engine is out. I wouldn't clean the cylinder head while it's off, otherwise you'll have to re-grind the valves. But clean up the piston head though. It will run as sweet as a nut. Massive difference! Fantastic engine, that one. I love single cylinder bikes.

      We'll see how much needs to be done. My biggest concern is the oil residue. I posted a picture on my facebook, of what the piston and valves look like. No doubt it's been burning oil

    Gotta love doing these overhauls. I have to do new piston rings and a new cam chain this winter :\

    One thing that might help ya with your small parts is get some egg cartons. That way you can put your small parts in something that you can orientate for directionality or a numerical path for reassembly. Also it help to keep small parts for rolling away.

      +SUBMOTO Yeah, Sub, the first bike shop I ever worked in the owner of the place was using them. I thought it was ingenious to be using egg cartons like that. Best part is he got the commercially sized ones for free by going to Waffle House since they pile through eggs like crazy. They just throw them out but since he asked he got like 8 of them.

    label plastic bags for all your hardware. it's time consuming but you'll never second guess yourself. also if you don't have one already, buy a torque wrench. nice video!

    Ever thought about getting a 2 stroke? Like an rd400, rd250, h2 750, or even a CR500?

    if u use a socket. u can set it to loosen or tight before u ever start on a bolt or nut. ijs!

    Hey Bud, you got love doing this stuff,your getting deep into it so better start labeling fasteners sandwich bags & plastic cups, egg crates work well for small fasteners,you know,I'm just trying to lend a hand. Check hackaweek, he does honda cb750, and shows cylinder hone & piston ring replacement om his complete rebuild, great vid, keep up the good work SUB.peace

      yup :-) that's exactly what I ended up doing. just had 1.5 hours of footage I wanted to cut down to 18 minutes :-p but yeah, absolutely a good idea

      hehe. yup. I used gloves the next day (the next video) ...but I actually ended up taking the off again. Its like I have a better 'feel' of things without gloves, but I hate getting greasy hands :-/

      I'm agree about "feel" but I heard that used oil is very dangereos for skin and it isn't about cosmetic danger.
