  • King George V of Hanover was the last King of Hanover. He was born on 27 May 1819 in Berlin, to Prince Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale and Duchess Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. George was a grandchild of both King George III of the United Kingdom and Charles II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He was seventh in the line of succession to the British throne at birth.
George had no full siblings but he had nine maternal half-siblings; Friedrich, Carl, & Friederike of Prussia, & Caroline, Wilhelm, Sophie, Auguste, Friedrich, & Carl of Solms-Braunfels. George grew up in Germany and Great Britain. By the age of 14, he was completely blind, having lost his eyesight in one eye in 1828, and the other eye in 1833. His father hoped George would marry his cousin, the future Queen Victoria, but this was not to be.
In 1820, King George III passed away, and his eldest son George succeeded as King George IV. He reigned until 1830. George IV’s brother William became king and reigned until 1837. By this point, George was third in the line of succession, after his cousin Victoria and his father Ernst Augustus. When William IV died, and his niece became queen of the united kingdom, the personal union of the British and Hanoverian thrones ended due to Hanover’s semi-salic law, which barred women from ascending its throne.
George’s father succeeded to the Hanoverian throne as Ernest Augustus, and George became the Crown Prince of Hanover. He remained second in the line of succession until the birth of Victoria, Princess Royal in 1840. In 1839, George met Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg. Four years later, they were wed on 18 February 1843, and had three children: Ernst Augustus, Frederica, and Marie.
George succeeded his father as the King of Hanover, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, and Earl of Armagh on 18 November 1851. He took the regnal name of George V.
Unlike his father, George held a strong dislike of Prussia and refused Prussia permission to build a railway line from Minden to Wilhelmshaven. He also was supportive of the Austrian Empire, which went against the views of the German Confederation. He broke with the German Confederation during the Austro-Prussian War. The Prussian government sent a dispatch demanding Hanover enter into an alliance with them and the Hanoverian army submit to the authority of Prussia or face war.
George refused, and Hanover joined the Austrian side in the war. On 29 June 1866, the Hanoverian army surrendered, after being outnumbered in battle. The Kingdom of Hanover was swiftly annexed by Prussia. The only real possibility of Hanover remaining a sovereign kingdom was for George to abdicate in favour of his son but George refused.
Hanover was annexed on 20 September 1866. George never renounced his rights or acknowledged Prussia’s actions. He was forced into exile, and moved to Austria. While Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria campaigned for the continuation of Saxony as a kingdom, he did not return the favour for the kingdom of Hanover.
George and his family lived in Vienna for a time, where George bought a house, but they later moved into a villa in Gmunden, Austria, in 1868. George continued to appeal for the powerful European countries to intervene on the behalf of Hanover. From 1866 to 1870, he maintained the Guelphic Legion, a volunteer military unit, hoping that a Franco-Prussian war would lead to the reconquest of his kingdom. In 1871, Napoleon III lost the Franco-Prussian War. As a result of George’s actions, Prussia suspended George’s financial compensation and confiscated his private assets.
George never regained his throne. He passed away on 12 June 1878, in Paris. After his funeral, his body was returned to England and buried in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

2:40 ..sh.. in the middle of Wilhelmshaven must never be pronounced with that sh-sound. You must always separate these letters - like in Wilhelm's harbour.
