    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Drew (Ronny Cox) and Ed (Jon Voight) argue about what to do with the man that Ed killed.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Like such other early '70s Hollywood films as Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971), Deliverance ponders violent instincts and definitions of manhood, ideas made all the more pressing by the period's escalating violence and assault on traditional gender roles. Regardless of these headier concerns, the critically praised realism of the action scenes on the river, with the actors performing a lot of the stunts, helped make the film a hit. Shooting on location on the Chattoga River in Georgia, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond captured the appeal and the peril of the river's pristine isolation, enhancing both the adventure's visceral thrills and Dickey's philosophical inquiry into man's true nature. Deliverance was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, although Dickey's screenplay of his novel was passed over, as was Reynolds' star-making turn. With its chilling sense of infinite menace, Deliverance spoke to contemporary anxieties over what anyone could do, given the right (or wrong) circumstances.

    One of the cleverest things about this movie was casting Burt Reynolds to play the tough, survivalist whom will obviously be the hero of the movie.
    Then halfway in, he gets taken out and then its all on John Voight's character who is physically and mentally ill-equipped to handle this situation. Yet he rises to the occasion.
    Thats excellent film-making.

    • @coldwinter5710
      @coldwinter5710 4 года назад +10

      Apparently Burt had a much bigger part & even more pivotal scene(s) that were cut. Per one of Burt's books, the director called him to let him know they ultimately felt they had to cut the scene(s) in order for the story line to focus more towards Voight's character. He felt it was in the best interests of the film, but obviously not in the best interests of Burt & his performance & he was very sorry he had to do it. Burt was disappointed but understood of course. Sure would be nice to see the lost scene(s)...RIP BR, you are missed.

    • @coldwinter5710
      @coldwinter5710 4 года назад +5

      Very interesting you should point this exact situation out. In Burt's 1st book, "My Life", he goes into great detail about this. There was a very large scene of Burt's that apparently, everyone at the orig screening felt it was a slam dunk for him to recieve an Oscar nom, (if not the win?) Needless to say, it was a stunning piece of acting by Burt. However, Boorman, the Director, came to Burt afterwards & told him, unfortunately, he needed to take the scene out. He felt the movie would basically end with this scene.
      For the film to continue, he needed to hand the film off to John. He needed to be able to pick it up from that point on, without Burt. Everyone felt awful for Burt, including John. For the good of the picture, Burt accepted the decision w/very little resistance. He said he was so thankful to be a part of the film & assumed he would be offered more plum roles in the future, as a result. Burt then stated, sadly, he was wrong. 😳

      Cold Winter Excellent comment! I never knew that.
      Well, he did alright for a while.
      Choosing to do silly movies like Cannonball Run 1-2 and the disastrous Stoker Ace really hurts his career.
      Even though Cannonball Run was successful at the box office it was shredded by critics.
      Burt has admitted when he became a big star. He kinda let his ego go wild instead of focusing on his acting career.
      Which led to choosing bad movies.
      Mickey Rourke kinda did the same thing.

      It's still a moral discussion though. The whole debate is over whether it's right or wrong to disobey the "law of the land" in their particular situation. That is absolutely a moral/ethical subject. Obviously it wouldn't feel like a "discussion" if you were the ones in that situation lol it would be more like you said, just instinctual self-preservation stuff, but even that, it's still part of the overall debate of morals and ethics.

    The ultimate "law vs. justice" dialogue in film history. Reynolds owns this scene as he owns the movie. Incredible acting chops, it's a shame he turned down so many fine films after DELIVERANCE. Irony is that Brando, who despised Reynolds, turned down the role of Louis. And yet Reynolds was born to play this role, no doubt about it, not even Brando could have done it better. Vice putting an arrow throught the heart of a rapist, no worries. Kill the s.o.b., bury him and thank God that you had the nerve, the stealth and the courage to take the shot and make the shot. Justice.

    It cuts Burt's character's judgement about the 'law', "The law?! What law?!" Meaning that when you're out that far in the wilderness (literally & figuratively), where life is live-or-die there's no such thing as the human construct of 'law'.

    • @EuropeYear1917
      @EuropeYear1917 6 лет назад +2

      Ummm... Yeah I kinda can agree, except that even in the boonies there's "law", it's just those that enforce it are much further away. But, with that note in mind, it needs to also be stated that it's not just about survival, it's about justice in an unjust system. Everyone in the nearest town is related to the guy he killed. Honestly, in that situation, even if the entire town knew the dead guy was a sick freak, Burt's character and the other 3 would be locked up with the key thrown out. Small towns like that are NOTORIOUS for having a Good Ol' Boy System, where locals/kin protect their own - dead or alive, and whether or not their own are criminals or not.

      Well, you know, they are needed. The different ”archetypes”, if you will, reason their way to a solution that will and has to hold up to scrutiny. Dont hate your opponent, either they reveal a flaw in your reasoning or they confirm the rigidity of your thesis. Without proper resistance you will never truly know what it means to be right.
