My experience in the Marine Corps is that anyone who gets kicked out for RCP is a scumbag. Every month hundreds of dirtbags promote. If you don’t, you’re probably a 3rd class/3rd class, marksman, with no schooling or anything beyond the bare minimum. The bar is so low with retention as bad as it is. Furthermore, medboarded service members get e-5 pay for life, so that’s just early retirement, we can take that one off the table right away And if you get kicked out for getting in trouble that’s your own fault. You aren’t the victim because you went to the club and did a line of coke in the bathroom. I’ve even seen people stay in with hazing NJP’s. With that said, I’ve also known someone who was denied reenlistment for a hazing NJP, because it happened less than 6 months before he went up for re enlistment. But like I said, that’s their own fault. Careers end every month, but I’d reckon 99% of them are their own fault. But even more importantly, get it out of your head that careers can only end in the military. People lose their careers in the civilian side too. If you do any kind of trade and suffer a debilitating injury, you’re out. You’re an airline pilot and had a mental health episode one time? You lose your commercial pilot license. But the difference here is that civilian jobs don’t pay you when you lose your career to medical issues. The military pays you for the rest of your life when you get hurt. A civilian career throws you to the curb and says “sorry, you can no longer perform your job duties, good luck”
The main reason I’ve been thinking about Military is because of all these financial benefits. I’m Mexican so I don’t come from a very well of family and money has always been an issue ever since I was a baby. Then My dad gave me the idea to join the military when I’m older. I think its a pretty decent idea. There aren’t many major setbacks I can think of personally for me.

My son just just signed enlistment papers for the Army National Guard (Nevada). He just went through MEPS last week. He’s still a senior in high school so I am a proud dad. He will be going in as an Automated Logistics Specialist.
I like the traveling part of being in the Army. Had fun in South Korea when I re-enlisted in the mid 1990's. I had the chance check out the country during my off time while being stationed at Camp Humphreys. Came back home to California when I PCS to Fort Irwin. Good memories.
Let me count the ways, why the ARMY IS GREAT!!! I did 24 years active plus 3 in the reserves. I’ve lived in Europe, Asia, the Middle East (lived not deployed) and in the Caribbean. I’ve deployed to Africa and multiple countries in the Middle East and have experienced a lot while receiving a nice paycheck! I’ve had a satisfying job experience and enjoyed working at multiple embassies and working with different nationalities. I’ve lived in beautiful Colorado and some so so states but we’re close to home. I’m retired with benefits that has me pulling in more money than when I’m was active, talking 90k range after taxes AND I’m a government contractor making over 65k a year!! I’m a college dropout from Louisiana and I make more money than my college educated friends and if I didn’t want to work i don’t have too!! Met a great many folks in my career and can only count about 2 people I didn’t like working with.
Why is a good idea and why I should joined 10 years ago at least in the reserves component which I am right now: 1. Student tuition 2. Well paid Part time 3. Health insurance at low cost 4. Good pension (if you are active just 20 years and you are free to say goodbye) 5. Pretty uniform. 6. Discipline and stay in shape. 7. Good resume for jobs after an honorable discharge. 8. Serving your country 9. Learn new skills 10. Know people around the world and new places thag you would never think you would know. So join now if you got the chance, fulfill at least the first contract if it is what your heart is telling you like mine was telling me since child. No hear people do what you think is better for you.
You made a lot of good points. My son is in the Army 2 years and plans on not renewing. I told him to rethink that because with everything that's going on in the world being in the Army is more reliable than coming home and not being able to get a job. I hope he changes his mind.

Just do it. Get in and Level up Yourself. I’m joining the army too and for a long time I’ve craved an environment of stability, accountability, merit and integrity. You know, real values and somewhere that appreciate those qualities and rewards them. I’m at a crossroads in my life as well. Have become pretty disillusioned with life and relationships. I’m not expecting the army to be the best All the time but I’m expecting it to be Far better than what the civilian world has to offer. Having your room, meals, basic pay and medical covered on top of other perks for soldiers isn’t bad at all. For a long time I feel I’ve lived far below the means of many and you really can’t beat what the military brings to your life if you play it right and take care of your shit. Update ? I just turned 18 in November and I started talking to a recruiter at the beginning of this month. I was quite nervous and didn’t know what to expect because I’ve never had to do something so serious and professional without my mom around. Sounds corny but I had to do so many things alone like get my ID talk to health care workers about my medical history and spend a day with my recruiter gathering other documents etc. I now leave to meps after the holidays and I’m not even worried. I’m excited for this journey and I can’t wait to grow mentally and physically and do something really good for myself, my family, and my country. I’ve always wanted to do something in the medical field but I didn’t qualify for any of the medical mos’s except for dental specialists. My mind keeps telling me that the dental specialists route is the safest and most rewarding but my heart wants me to challenge myself and go for infantry and go to ranger school or become a green beret. I just want to know that I can push myself beyond those safety nets. I have a sense of what it’s like to push myself beyond my limits but I feel like the army is the only thing that can truly question my determination. That excites me. I guess I’ll go 11x and see if I’m an 11c or 11b. I wanna do airborne training as well that really catches my interest.
PROBLEMS WITH THE US MILITARY There is a lot of talk these days about the difficulties the military is having retaining and recruiting personnel. After some thought, I see two categories of issues that could cause the military’s problems. FIRST ….. The perception that the US wants a war with Russia. SECOND ….. Conditions in the military itself. The US government seems to be trying to instigate a full-blown war with Russia. ….. It’s been well documented that the US has been trying to cause a conflict since the 1980’s. We even signed, and broke, an agreement that would have avoided conflict. ….. Most folks believe it was the US that destroyed the Nord Stream Pipeline (that’s an act of war against Russia and Germany). ….. The US has twice stopped a negotiated settlement in Ukraine. ….. The US actions in Ukraine caused Russia to get closer with China. This will make any future conflict with China much more difficult for the US. ….. Our Commander in Chief has mental issues. ….. The US now has boots on the ground in Ukraine. ….. Military personnel know the civilian population doesn’t know, or care, anything about the military. There is a severe disconnect between the military and civilian population. …………………………………………………… All of these things send a clear signal a US instigated war is more likely now than anytime since WW 2. ……………………………………………………. The next category of issues responsible for the recruiting and retention problems is the military itself. BENGHAZI We all watched President Obama abandon our military. But, added to that, we did not see any senior military leaders speak out. This was a clear indication that military leaders were more concerned with their jobs and perks, than the welfare of the troops under their command. AFGANSTAN We all watched the mismanaged withdrawal. We learned 2 lessons. First, the military leadership was incompetent. Second, No military leaders spoke out about this failure. This was a clear indication that military leaders were more concerned with their jobs and perks, than the welfare of the troops under their command. Additionally, this was just the latest military failure. The US has not won a war since 1946. Additionally, Congress has not declared war since WW 2. Our leaders no longer follow the Constitution. THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF The leader of the US military has mental issues. We are not allowed to say so. But, we all know it. Importantly, not one senior military leader has spoken up about this. THE DISCONNECT WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE Most Americans don’t know anyone in the military. Additionally, over 70% of America’s young people are not qualified to be in the military. The volunteer military has created a disconnect that encourages politicians to play at being generals, and sending our military into harm's way on their warmonger whims (remember the US has not won a war since 1946). THE MILITARY HAS GONE WOLK The Military leadership has adopted an anti-Trump / pro-socialist stance. They have embraced gender dysphoria. And, they have lowered standards to allow women to reduce combat effectiveness. Most of us have seen the recruiting video featuring a girl who has two mommies. All in all ……. The current difficulties with retention and recruitment seem a logical result of the above conditions.
True and that is why the MARINE CORPS is the only branch that is still on high standards and even though they have a little bit acceptance of the gender culture thing abomination thing but they are still keeping the MARINE CORPS a high standard. In retrospect, the reason why I regretted joining the Army was because I had been enlightened that the Army institutionally didn’t live up to its values of LDRSHIP. Institutionally, the army was in conspiracy against the health of my family, and the attrition it had on my individuality was such, that afterwards I have problems with authority in the real world. The army consists of a bunch of “thick skinned” people that exhibit thin skinned behavior when subordinates reprimand to redress grievances. This is not to say that the army is garbage, because there are good leaders, but the devil is in the details. Individual leaders may care about your well-being, but institutionally you’ll be dealing with a machine and a culture that doesn’t give a fuck, where regardless of any ethical or moral transgressions, bad actors will receive the backing of the entire hierarchy to the extend where you are forced to prematurely check out from disillusionment, and/or endure b.s until you become what you hate the most about the Army. Everyone’s experience is different, and relative, but you won’t be able to understand content without context.
33yo here - looking to join after years in civilian jobs that didn’t work. No wife, no kids. Got laid off lost most momentum. So I am looking for a renewed purpose in life, and maybe some adventure. In good shape, smart, but I’m wise enough to seek skills that use my brains more than brawn. I’ve been exploring 35M. Any shared experiences with a similar situation would be appreciated.
Join fairly older too. My advice would be to either go guard or reserve instead of active duty. If you do go active duty, then I would highly suggest something in the Air Force instead of the Army. We've all heard that a gazillion times, but there is a gazillion reasons why the Army is more of a young persons game, not only physically but also mentally. You don't have kids and you're not married. So if you go active duty enlisted in the military, you will have to stay in the barracks. If you join the Air Force, generally in most cases you would only have to stay in the barracks till your E4 or even E3. If you join the Army, generally in most cases you will have to stay in the barracks until you're E6 or maybe in some cases E5 if you're lucky. As an older guy, you really should think about if having to stay in the barracks for potentially several years longer is really a great idea.

Dude I'm FAT/Obese as h3ll. I am 22 and I have just worked minimum wage jobs or a few dollars above minimum wage. My financial situation is awful. I just started a Trade and it's really cool and is much better pay however I am switching companies and I haven't found stability. I seen that the Trade I'm currently doing is available in the Army. However I'm not physically fit, not sure whether to enlist. I would if I'm physically fit. I'm obese.
You should get it shape for yourself first, it's your health. If you're willing to do that you'll make it. I know it's really tough and takes time but better late than never.
No one cares so do you and not your parents. Your life and not them. You are living someone else's dream and not yours. But choose wisely of which military branch you choose and MOS....it can be a regret.
You cannot be waived for drugs. Federal law supersedes the state. If you fail the drug test recruitment stops. When you take a drug test for the military someone will watch you piss every time. We like to call them meat gazers lol
The Army is a difficult place for an 18 year old to grow up - become an adult. Much harder than, at a university where much foolishness is forgiven. But, it's a lot cheaper, and usually more effective. After a few years in the military you'll be much better prepared, mentally, emotionally and financially for either a civilian career, or as a university student.
I joined because we aren't at war, combat sounds great but if I spend my 20 years in there I'll be able to retire at 48 and that's not so bad. Benefits? No interest house loans?

The ASVAB is a shit test but it is to test one's ability to understand and do ones job. Most of the ASVAB is useless and we don't even use it in the MOS as in the job at all and that is why it's a shit test. The ASVAB is easy but it's just that the ASVAB for Dummies Book doesn't go into detail that makes others understand to find the solution to the problem. That is why go get a tutor and or something else so that you past the asvab.
You will be at least exposed to toxins at most get severely hurt in combat. The VA hires many bad medical personnel who will hurt you. (See the 2017 USA Today article) They will not take responsibility to help you after they hurt you as well. I’m going thru it now, but you can read case after case online. I had an un supervised first year intern (not licensed to practice medicine) prescribe me IV medicine she knew that I was allergic to and it’s messed me up. They won’t compensate me and when I take them to court they will appeal, appeal & appeal so they will delay it for 5-10 years. Look at Camp Lejeune & Agent Orange where they waited for most who were affected to die off.

In some cases you can take collage classes while on active duty. It really just depends on the unit and how busy you are. So there are times where you will not have the time to take classes and times when you might on active duty. No telling till you get to the unit though.
Just make sure to remind yourself, if anything fails, you have 2nd thoughts of the military, is to just do it for the job, money, benefits, etc. You and me we are about the same age and so you will have to put up with immaturity at basic because you will have to be punished with them of stupid things they do. And stay away from combat MOS but be warned of bullying, harassment, etc.
Are the questions they ask you at meps always the same for everyone? For the verification bc I already forgot the answers I put on my asvab and don’t wanna fail the verification or get a lower score and retake the whole thing

Let me count the ways, why the ARMY IS GREAT!!! I did 24 years active plus 3 in the reserves. I’ve lived in Europe, Asia, the Middle East (lived not deployed) and in the Caribbean. I’ve deployed to Africa and multiple countries in the Middle East and have experienced a lot while receiving a nice paycheck! I’ve had a satisfying job experience and enjoyed working at multiple embassies and working with different nationalities. I’ve lived in beautiful Colorado and some so so states but we’re close to home. I’m retired with benefits that has me pulling in more money than when I’m was active, talking 90k range after taxes AND I’m a government contractor making over 65k a year!! I’m a college dropout from Louisiana and I make more money than my college educated friends and if I didn’t want to work i don’t have too!! Met a great many folks in my career and can only count about 2 people I didn’t like working with.
Why is a good idea and why I should joined 10 years ago at least in the reserves component which I am right now:
1. Student tuition
2. Well paid Part time
3. Health insurance at low cost
4. Good pension (if you are active just 20 years and you are free to say goodbye)
5. Pretty uniform.
6. Discipline and stay in shape.
7. Good resume for jobs after an honorable discharge.
8. Serving your country
9. Learn new skills
10. Know people around the world and new places thag you would never think you would know.
So join now if you got the chance, fulfill at least the first contract if it is what your heart is telling you like mine was telling me since child. No hear people do what you think is better for you.

You made a lot of good points. My son is in the Army 2 years and plans on not renewing. I told him to rethink that because with everything that's going on in the world being in the Army is more reliable than coming home and not being able to get a job. I hope he changes his mind.

I’m enlisting due to losing almost everything and in pursuit to get my life together and to embark on a personal journey to find myself and create a sense of stability in my life, I went to school for audio engineering but became homeless due to my household, I’ve always been disciplined and never really had much of a child hood, I pay up to 900 a month in child support, and I can’t find any steady means of employment in my area. Am I making the right decision?? I’m supposed to leave in a week and a half.
Just do it. Get in and Level up Yourself. I’m joining the army too and for a long time I’ve craved an environment of stability, accountability, merit and integrity. You know, real values and somewhere that appreciate those qualities and rewards them. I’m at a crossroads in my life as well. Have become pretty disillusioned with life and relationships. I’m not expecting the army to be the best All the time but I’m expecting it to be Far better than what the civilian world has to offer. Having your room, meals, basic pay and medical covered on top of other perks for soldiers isn’t bad at all.
For a long time I feel I’ve lived far below the means of many and you really can’t beat what the military brings to your life if you play it right and take care of your shit. I think most people expect and want for far too much. But that’s just me

Update ? I just turned 18 in November and I started talking to a recruiter at the beginning of this month. I was quite nervous and didn’t know what to expect because I’ve never had to do something so serious and professional without my mom around. Sounds corny but I had to do so many things alone like get my ID talk to health care workers about my medical history and spend a day with my recruiter gathering other documents etc. I now leave to meps after the holidays and I’m not even worried. I’m excited for this journey and I can’t wait to grow mentally and physically and do something really good for myself, my family, and my country. I’ve always wanted to do something in the medical field but I didn’t qualify for any of the medical mos’s except for dental specialists. My mind keeps telling me that the dental specialists route is the safest and most rewarding but my heart wants me to challenge myself and go for infantry and go to ranger school or become a green beret. I just want to know that I can push myself beyond those safety nets. I have a sense of what it’s like to push myself beyond my limits but I feel like the army is the only thing that can truly question my determination. That excites me. I guess I’ll go 11x and see if I’m an 11c or 11b. I wanna do airborne training as well that really catches my interest.

PROBLEMS WITH THE US MILITARY
There is a lot of talk these days about the difficulties the military is having retaining and recruiting personnel.
After some thought, I see two categories of issues that could cause the military’s problems.
FIRST ….. The perception that the US wants a war with Russia.
SECOND ….. Conditions in the military itself.
The US government seems to be trying to instigate a full-blown war with Russia.
….. It’s been well documented that the US has been trying to cause a conflict since the 1980’s. We even signed, and broke, an agreement that would have avoided conflict.
….. Most folks believe it was the US that destroyed the Nord Stream Pipeline (that’s an act of war against Russia and Germany).
….. The US has twice stopped a negotiated settlement in Ukraine.
….. The US actions in Ukraine caused Russia to get closer with China. This will make any future conflict with China much more difficult for the US.
….. Our Commander in Chief has mental issues.
….. The US now has boots on the ground in Ukraine.
….. Military personnel know the civilian population doesn’t know, or care, anything about the military. There is a severe disconnect between the military and civilian population.

All of these things send a clear signal a US instigated war is more likely now than anytime since WW 2.

The next category of issues responsible for the recruiting and retention problems is the military itself.
BENGHAZI
We all watched President Obama abandon our military. But, added to that, we did not see any senior military leaders speak out. This was a clear indication that military leaders were more concerned with their jobs and perks, than the welfare of the troops under their command.
AFGANSTAN
We all watched the mismanaged withdrawal. We learned 2 lessons. First, the military leadership was incompetent. Second, No military leaders spoke out about this failure. This was a clear indication that military leaders were more concerned with their jobs and perks, than the welfare of the troops under their command.
Additionally, this was just the latest military failure. The US has not won a war since 1946. Additionally, Congress has not declared war since WW 2. Our leaders no longer follow the Constitution.
THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF
The leader of the US military has mental issues. We are not allowed to say so. But, we all know it. Importantly, not one senior military leader has spoken up about this.
THE DISCONNECT WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE
Most Americans don’t know anyone in the military. Additionally, over 70% of America’s young people are not qualified to be in the military. The volunteer military has created a disconnect that encourages politicians to play at being generals, and sending our military into harm's way on their warmonger whims (remember the US has not won a war since 1946).
THE MILITARY HAS GONE WOLK
The Military leadership has adopted an anti-Trump / pro-socialist stance. They have embraced gender dysphoria. And, they have lowered standards to allow women to reduce combat effectiveness. Most of us have seen the recruiting video featuring a girl who has two mommies.
All in all ……. The current difficulties with retention and recruitment seem a logical result of the above conditions.
True and that is why the MARINE CORPS is the only branch that is still on high standards and even though they have a little bit acceptance of the gender culture thing abomination thing but they are still keeping the MARINE CORPS a high standard.
I hated the ARMY, I got out from basic but didn't finish it and I might have to go back again because I need to and this time it is for benefits, money, etc.
In retrospect, the reason why I regretted joining the Army was because I had been enlightened that the Army institutionally didn’t live up to its values of LDRSHIP. Institutionally, the army was in conspiracy against the health of my family, and the attrition it had on my individuality was such, that afterwards I have problems with authority in the real world. The army consists of a bunch of “thick skinned” people that exhibit thin skinned behavior when subordinates reprimand to redress grievances. This is not to say that the army is garbage, because there are good leaders, but the devil is in the details. Individual leaders may care about your well-being, but institutionally you’ll be dealing with a machine and a culture that doesn’t give a fuck, where regardless of any ethical or moral transgressions, bad actors will receive the backing of the entire hierarchy to the extend where you are forced to prematurely check out from disillusionment, and/or endure b.s until you become what you hate the most about the Army.
Everyone’s experience is different, and relative, but you won’t be able to understand content without context.

33yo here - looking to join after years in civilian jobs that didn’t work. No wife, no kids. Got laid off lost most momentum. So I am looking for a renewed purpose in life, and maybe some adventure. In good shape, smart, but I’m wise enough to seek skills that use my brains more than brawn. I’ve been exploring 35M. Any shared experiences with a similar situation would be appreciated.
Join fairly older too. My advice would be to either go guard or reserve instead of active duty. If you do go active duty, then I would highly suggest something in the Air Force instead of the Army. We've all heard that a gazillion times, but there is a gazillion reasons why the Army is more of a young persons game, not only physically but also mentally.
You don't have kids and you're not married. So if you go active duty enlisted in the military, you will have to stay in the barracks. If you join the Air Force, generally in most cases you would only have to stay in the barracks till your E4 or even E3. If you join the Army, generally in most cases you will have to stay in the barracks until you're E6 or maybe in some cases E5 if you're lucky.
As an older guy, you really should think about if having to stay in the barracks for potentially several years longer is really a great idea.

Left the Navy Bootcamp 2020 and now Army is the only option. Need a waiver to get back in.
The waiver is easy to get right? In most cases all one needs to do is submit medical documentation so that one won't reinjure themselves.

Dude I'm FAT/Obese as h3ll. I am 22 and I have just worked minimum wage jobs or a few dollars above minimum wage. My financial situation is awful. I just started a Trade and it's really cool and is much better pay however I am switching companies and I haven't found stability. I seen that the Trade I'm currently doing is available in the Army. However I'm not physically fit, not sure whether to enlist. I would if I'm physically fit. I'm obese.

You cannot be waived for drugs. Federal law supersedes the state. If you fail the drug test recruitment stops. When you take a drug test for the military someone will watch you piss every time. We like to call them meat gazers lol

The Army is a difficult place for an 18 year old to grow up - become an adult. Much harder than, at a university where much foolishness is forgiven. But, it's a lot cheaper, and usually more effective. After a few years in the military you'll be much better prepared, mentally, emotionally and financially for either a civilian career, or as a university student.

The ASVAB is a shit test but it is to test one's ability to understand and do ones job. Most of the ASVAB is useless and we don't even use it in the MOS as in the job at all and that is why it's a shit test. The ASVAB is easy but it's just that the ASVAB for Dummies Book doesn't go into detail that makes others understand to find the solution to the problem.
That is why go get a tutor and or something else so that you past the asvab.

You will be at least exposed to toxins at most get severely hurt in combat. The VA hires many bad medical personnel who will hurt you. (See the 2017 USA Today article) They will not take responsibility to help you after they hurt you as well. I’m going thru it now, but you can read case after case online. I had an un supervised first year intern (not licensed to practice medicine) prescribe me IV medicine she knew that I was allergic to and it’s messed me up. They won’t compensate me and when I take them to court they will appeal, appeal & appeal so they will delay it for 5-10 years. Look at Camp Lejeune & Agent Orange where they waited for most who were affected to die off.

In some cases you can take collage classes while on active duty. It really just depends on the unit and how busy you are. So there are times where you will not have the time to take classes and times when you might on active duty. No telling till you get to the unit though.

Just make sure to remind yourself, if anything fails, you have 2nd thoughts of the military, is to just do it for the job, money, benefits, etc.
