  • 11-12-2015 : Happy 70th Birthday Neil Young !
With this vid, I'd like to thank Neil Young for everything he has done, is creating, giving and sharing with us, all over those years. He made my days, each of my days.
I gathered here about 360 pictures from 1950 to 2015, and 4 of his many, many greatest songs.
(Well , don't wonder why I chose these songs, I can't choose between Neil's songs. They just played on their own while I was checking the pics, and I thought: it's OK Neil, you can play this, your muse rules).
I want to thank Neil's muse, Neil's family and friends, the bands and the teams, Neil's dogs, Neil's guitars, harmonicas and pianos, Neil's cars, and the Moon too ! You are great !
Thanks to the photographers and Rusties for the pics.
    - 0:00 : Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young and Crazy Horse at Fillmore East. 1970.
    - 3:31 : The Loner - Live at Canterbury House. 1968.
    - 8:13 : Cowgirl In The Sand - Neil Young and Crazy Horse at Fillmore East. 1970.
    - 23:09 : Down By The River - Neil Young and the International Harvesters on Austin City Limits. 1984.
Let's enjoy and love life .
Long may you run and keep on rocking Neil.
You walk like a giant on the land, and fly over the rainbow faster than a bird. ;)

I remember in the lobby of a movie theatre near SFO next to Tanforan Park. Neil Young with his wife Peggy walking along with an entourage pushing a person in a wheelchair walked just in front of me I frozed and couldn't move for a very long time and just stood there staring at them. My date had no idea who he was but couldn't believe what just happened to me. I said that guy is one of my heroes in music. She said "so just go walk up to him and ask for his autograph then!". I said you don't understand but it's so much more than just being a fan. I'm now 58 years old and my date fully understand now what happened to me that day,

    • @billenplum

The guy in the wheelchair was probably their son , Ben Young. I understand your feelings. I wouldn't ask Neil for an autograph neither. He's much more than just a rock star to me too.

I was with the love of my life and it was the first time for me to see Neil. He was great as was expected. Will never forget it. My husband could sing most of his songs and did a real good job. He had a beautiful voice. He passed 4 years ago. He sure turn me on some good music I miss him so bad. God bless you Neil maybe one day I'll get to see you again. God bless you. @@billenplum I couldn't remember the year it was that I seen Neil in Shreveport. So it was 1984 thank you for refreshing my memory. Bought the tour t-shirts and wore it out till it had holes in it. After we had my daughter and she got to be a teenager her daddy was much too big for his shirts. And we had a lot of good old ones. She was so proud to wear those vintage t-shirts. Got to seek Crosby Stills and Nash with Neil one time, it was Dallas or Oklahoma. I don't recall. But it was a great. When Jackson Browne came he played at the Strand. my husband was out of town so I didn't have anyone to go with. Got to see Bob Dylan at CenturyTel, big disappointment. Paul McCartney couple years ago in Shreveport at the Municipal Auditorium. Truly enjoyed it. My two adult children took me. Sure missed having my husband there, but actually his favorite was John Lennon and mine too. Seen Paul Revere and the Raiders at the Hirsch Coliseum when I was in my early teens. I wish I hadn't missed Jackson Browne.. They're all getting old like us. Sure brings back a lot of good memories. young beautiful and free as bird. we sure seen better days than now.

It's hard to learn of their passing.l Do listen to all the good old Tunes. My husband made a lot of cassettes and CDs for me. One of my favorite songs by one of the old greats was Hank Williams Senior. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. My husband learn that one for me too. He turned me on to Gram Parsons and I was in love. And he told me that Gram Parsons was deceased broke my heart. Sweep out the ashes was one of my favorite. When my daughter was a baby we would play Gram Parsons to put her to sleep. Ok, here goes... one summer evening in '70 fresh out of high school I went to a dance hall in Houston. Cant remember why I went there, but I did, by myself. As its my standard procedure when I walk into a club, I first walk around checking out the babes. However this time it was a little different. The band playing was Fever Tree. And later I found out it was Neil’s Nowaday’a Clancy Cant Even Sing they were playing. So there I am walking around and that song was making me aware of what was been played. Later that night and I think as an encore, they played it again. This time I was at the side of the stage listening and being mesmerized by the lyrics and the singer singing it. Dennis Keller, the lead vocalist of the group, he had such a bluesy type of voice and his singing was for me just something else. Apparently for the crowd as well, as we all went crazy cheering them afterwards. So it was a few months later in my very 1st apartment I shared with a boyhood friend, I discovered Neil Young. One evening KLOL our local rock n roll station at the time was broadcasting live, Neil’s concert from Royce Hall. One of 3 at the time. The 2nd performance was on my birthday but cant remember which one KLOL had broadcast. I knew nothing about Neil and the broadcast, but my roommate fortunately knew about the concert. So we lit up a couple of joints and listened in. As the concert was going on, we were chit chatting away as friends would come over. Half ass listening to the concert until and this was same thing that happened to me at the dance hall, another life changing moment. Even though mind you I, like everybody else back then knew about & love the Beatles. But that was about it. Not really into rock & roll until Neil came along. So when Neil started to sing “Sugar Mountain”, immediately my mind and eventually my heart went straight to that song and I told everybody to shut up while I listen. That song sent me to another dimension. Completely dissolve my sleeping high, cleared me up, I became very lucid and I just dissolved into that song! The way I interpret Sugar Mountain to this day, its about Heaven. And that was the start of my journey into rock & roll music and moreso Neil’s music & life through the many concerts I attended, the pics, books, movies and my annual subscription to Archives. Funny thing, it wasn't until, in those first few weeks, after the concert, diving into Neil's music I found out he wrote Clancy!. Up until then I thought it was members of Fever Tree who wrote it. The heart felt emotion Dennis Keller put into singing it, I thought it was theirs! I hope, if Neil hasn’t heard it yet, he will. I really think he will thoroughly enjoy Fever Tree’s cover of it. Have you listen to it yet? When convenient check it out. Peace Out...

@user-ho2lc9yi6y Yeah, thank you Charles for sharing this story!!
I can easily understand why you've been moved by those two songs when you were still a student, as they both talk about the end of the childhood/teenage, and the doubts at the begining of the adult life. It was what Neil was going through in his early days, and we've all been there and since , we can relate. Neil is so talented with sharing the feelings.
I love these songs a lot as well, and yes, I agree, Fever Tree cover of Clancy is a good one!

I consider Neil and McCartney as the premier 'pentathlete's' (writing, arranging, playing, singing & producing) of all time, in Rock n' Roll history. It's really them, then a big gap-they're that good.

@Bandana Dee Isaac If I have 30 top Beatles song, Paul wrote 6 of them, maybe. I consider Neil Young and Lennon with the Beatles to be the best. Smokey Robinson., Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, early Van Morrison are great. Other great songs and artist lists, ignore at your own peril: The Replacements - Unsatisfied
The Replacements - Left of the Dial
Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield - Mr Soul
Psychedelic Furs - Love my way
Sam Cooke - Change is Gonna Come
Wilco - Impossible Germany (live on RUclips not on just OK record)
Graham Parker - Pourin it all out
Elvis Costello - This years model
The Zombies - Tell her no
Love - Alone Again Or / House is not a Motel / Between Clark and Hilldale / Softy to Me / Orange Skies
      Neil young - Powderfinger
      Neil Young - Old Man
      Urge Overkill - Sister Havana
Marshall Crenshaw - Whenever You’re on my Mind
      , Cyncical Girl
The Beatles - All I wanna Do
The Beatles - Don't Bother Me / Not a Second Time / I Need You / Day in the Life / I'm Only Sleeping / This Boy
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze/ Little Wing
Neil Young - On the Way Home
Four Tops - Just Ask the Lonely
The Temptations - My Baby/ Don't Look Back

Indeed! I was hooked on Neil in early 70's. Wore out my first copy of Harvest..bought a replacement. I still have it packed away in boxes of old albums. Neil Young is a truly original artist/musician who never compromised his music for ANY record company/machine. His history shows his love for not only his family & special needs son, but also Neil & his wife helped many others with similar afflictions. I always appreciated his love for this earth & his desire to make a difference! Long May You Run..Mr. Young!

+jay wire You've said it. I feel the same, Neil is a part of our life that we can share all around the world and through the times. A good part. It's what I feel, looking at my son trying to play with my old Neil Young songbooks too ;) And for a while, we both have just the same age. Feelgood.

    • @jgwire

+billenplum these days you can learn most any song from a YT video tutorial. I don't know of many folks who still use the old fashioned way -- while practicing for hours in front of the speakers blasting the song -- i used to put a nickel on the needle to slow it down so i could learn easier -- it worked, but it ruined the record...lol it was a real eye opener to see all these YT videos of Neil songs and realize that I had been playing some of them wrong all these years -- but so what....it was the feeling that mattered to me...

I don't know anything about it, but I thought it was very abrupt the way he left Peggy. Love the mans Music, and especially the messages. Music comes from the soul and his is DEEP.

    • @billenplum
      @billenplum  4 года назад +2

@Rodney Caupp. If you listen carefully to Neil songs, you'll hear that things between Pegi and him were not going so good, many years before he left. He sings it. It wasn't so abrupt as you think, it was abrupt for the people because we've been told about it by the news just a few month before the divorce. But for him and Pegi, it was there sooner. They've been in love very long, but their story was over. Differently, Without Rings, Ramada Inn, A Letter Home...

I had this playing in the background while I was working. I paused and looked at the screen to see what I was missing - live playing Cowgirl in the Sand maybe and saw the most fabulous photo of Neil I have ever seen. I completely froze and was thunder struck. Needless to say, I am downloading this treasure to enjoy many times in the future. Thank you so very much billenplum! Peter Bøgh Jensen Well, you know, it's subjective, it's my best of Neil indeed. I'm glad you like it. Thank you.
I put them in a personal order that means something to me, though I know Neil wouldn't like this, because the way they are released on his albums is part of his art. (Sorry Neil, my playlist is part of me.)
I tried to find the songs I like with a good sound ( hum, as far as it's possible on YT, it's MP3 anyway, I have them with a better quality at home). I chose most of them live, where Neil is at his best IMO. And it's a pleasure to look at him and the bands playing, it's what I like on YT. A lot of songs are missing though, but they're playing in my head all day long. :D
