Hey Rob, this part of an article in the Bangkok Post last month. The full story is about lifting the ban.
The alcohol sales restriction was introduced more than five decades ago - reportedly to stop some government officials from partying and drinking in the afternoon.
Hey Rob, I think the hours may be rooted in the time kids get out of school. Law makers most likely didn't want someone to buy a beer then get behind the wheel and hit a group of kids walking home from school. Just a guess based on the time.
Sorta like the pub hours in the UK back in the day. Except those were set to prevent munitions workers coming back onto shift drunk during WWI (II?).
This is the reason I've heard as well.
Yes, that’s what we heard from our kids’ school living in Bangkok. I have no clue… Did not really care 😂
I never saw restrictions at Patong Beach, but back near the airport they followed the rules as you described.....thanks for the video
I was in Chiang Mai and main road bars did not sell beer between 2-5 as the police there enforce it. However u could go to say irish, western bar down the alley and hotels and get no problem. The 2-5 is as people say about the kids coming home and drivers not being drunk. Many years ago a schoolbus had a fatal crash and many died driver was drunk. Thai govt had a backlash from public and introduced the restriction of alchol. On koh chang the bars are allowed to sell beer at anytime when open more relaxed but 7-11, lotus, big c and macro do not sell 2-5 mama pops shop no problem.
Banning the sale of beer in the afternoons started sometime in the early 2000s, it was to reduce drink driving.
I believed for a long time that the time restrictions had something to do with Thai buddhist religion. I was wrong. The reason for the nonsensical time restrictions is that they want to avoid that civil servants get drunk during work hours. I am not kidding you. The TAT (Thailand Authority of Tourism) however has suggested to abbandon the rules in order to increase tourism after the covid-lockdown, but it is not likely to be changed. Anywho, you can just go to a mom and pop store and they will not bother about the restrictions.
The reason that I've always heard for the closing of alcohol sales between 2-5pm is because the Thai government does not want children (read “high school students”) to be able to buy it after school lets out, so the purchase of alcohol is banned.
Thumbs up 👍 Rob
Rob have you noticed the 7-11 at the fuel stations do not sell beer.
Back in uk we had a bargain booze at our local petrol station lol.
Yes I did
Useful on-the-ground info. Keep it coming Rob!
Montana sales start at 8:00 am and end at 2:00 am..... Cheers
In Belgium the cafees/bars stay open until they run out of beer😉. In restaurants you can order drinks from 17 u 00 until 01.00 some of them open from 12.00 noon until 14.00 you can order drinks then . When they are open they can sell drinks.
Australia has pretty liberal hours for alcohol, generally around 9am the pubs will open and bottle shops, except Sundays that's 10am. The only days you cant buy alcohol, ( usually only half the day inside the premises, but no take-aways in Good Friday and Xmas day). Most pubs have liberal opening hours, again except Sundays, but can choose when they close but most only go to about 2 or 3am, on the weekends. Even during covid lockdowns bottle shops were open, otherwise there would of been riots in Australia lol.
Cheers
🙂
0:59 Best burger in Phuket. They recently opened one in Patong.
Local shops will sell you beer in the afternoon, but not many will sell on Buddha days
In Italy there is no restriction time in the markets as in the bar. Only there are some bar that to avoid problems with some heavy drinkers not sell alchool in early morning, like only from 11am
In Vegas 24/7. I have been in Thailand shopping at a grocery store at 3 pm wanted some beer for the night so like usual I take the groceries back to hotel. Do I go back to that grocery after 5? No I go to the nearest 711.
I’ve been in Thailand a while, the times and rules were different and the afternoon closing time was 1 o’clock but you could buy in bulk after 1 o’clock, so what it meant for me was I had to buy 2 boxes of beer, one box was not allowed.
Sorry dear minimum is 2 boxes lol
South Carolina mini bottles! Absolutely absurd. From 1973 through 2005, ALL hard liquor in bars and restaurants HAD to be poured from 1.7 oz mini bottles. Texas and Utah did it for a while, but they ended in 1990. I tool a part time job for a while bartending down there. I had worked as a bartender for several years during college (yes, several - I took a loooooong time to graduate!) in Ohio. The whole mini bottle thing took some getting used to and virtually assured the bar staff was in the weeds anytime the place was busy.
Hello Rob 👍🇺🇸👍BEER !! Ah the memories. Have a good one
White sun bar 😂as long as the customer payed the drinks open till morning 😊
I've been watching since the beginning I was going to move there about7 years ago changed my mind . I've been there 3 times in the north and central part. I'm in HK now but planning to visit Phuket in a couple of weeks. I really love your informative videos.
That's awesome
I live here and not selling alcohol for a day doesn't bother me. Plan for it. I like to think that the law stays in place for the mom and pop shops you mentioned recieve more foot traffic during those hours when you would normally spend your money at a 7eleven. It's very important to keep Thai small businesses a priority. I liked the video. Thanks
Hey Rob, it sounds like it was established years ago as a Thai version of a siesta, a popular afternoon rest/sleep time for workers in many Latin American and Mediterranean countries.
Hey Rob. From Richland Washington USA 🇺🇸 😊
In Denmark it begins when you´re thirsty and ends when you´ve had enough 🤷
Wow Wow We Wow!!! Thanks 😊
Hi Rob, from Toronto Canada
Where I am in issan get beer anytime off the pallet at the local store
Heya Rob, my British buddy just opened his bar over there in the beer garden area called Good Times Bar and Restaurant his name is Stuart, drop by and have a beer one night! He does live music a few nights a week and has a house band also.
I have a great 7-11 over off of Het Patong and the girls always sell me my 3 large Singha's even from the 2 to 5!
Did you see what they started doing in Pattaya lately? they are starting to have a decibel limit on live music bars that don't have any walls keeping the noise in and there is not really any info if the walls can be that clear plastic or sheetrock walls.
I have my ticket booked and closed on my property this week, see you around Kamala after 03/21/2024!
Keep up the great videos, hopefully I'll see you out and about next month.

So reading between the lines certain places make their own rules....kinda like the Thai equivalent of Kentucky. If i take a wild guess I'd guess it's somewhere up north??
Rob do you have any good contacts for taxi from the airport please
The rule is supposed to prevent High School students from purchasing alcohol, but surely they can buy it earlier if they want to buy it?
Ting Tong
In my local town back in uk we had a beer shop called liquor smart .
Lick her smart, well it made me laugh.
Rob sorry can't find an email for you so hope you read this. Is there any news on Simon and Mem from Land of Smiles Thailand, I know you were a friend of theirs, but they seem to have disappeared without trace, would love to know what has happened to them, are they back in Thailand or still in the UK. Hope you read this and reply, I have alerts for anything you might send. Cheers Graham.

The restriction is for the kids getting out of school and making sure they go home instead of go drinking :)
To curb teenage drinking after school. That's why they don't sell beer from 2 until 5:00 p.m..
