This week I am repairing and refinishing a small console table that was in pretty bad condition after sitting in a shed for several years. The finish is worn out and flaking and veneer is starting to shed along the edges. The entire piece is wobbly and a leg is about to fall off. Other than that, it is great shape!
This was a more simple project than I usually post on this channel. I began by removing the finish from each piece after disassembling, repairing some gouges in the wood top using heat and moisture, and using oxalic acid to remove stains from the wood and even out the color. I glued the veneer back in place and plugged and tapped a new hole for the screws in each lower leg. After conditioning the wood, I stained the wood and treated with boiled linseed oil and finishing wax to enhance the look of the grain and give it a little shine.

Thanks to all for visiting my channel and watching how I refinished this small console table. Please tell me how you feel about the oil and wax finish I applied in lieu of a poly or shellac. I discovered that this table may have belonged to my great grandparents and was passed on to my parents in 1970 so it is much older than I had originally thought. If you feel like watching another furniture project of mine, here is a video of me repairing and restoring an old rocking chair ruclips.net/video/tgMWwZiIISM/видео.html. See you in the next one!
That's so cool. That table could fit just about anywhere in a home. What a family treasure.
I don't know enough to comment about the oil and wax, but I love how it looks and the fact that it's protected.
😂
I have a tale like this and you made the one you found look spectacular. I wondered why you didn't use stripper and rather scraped off the varnish, though, plus, while the fninsh looks fantastic, some people who don't want plants or their guests wrecking their furniture with water stains may prefer a waterproof finish.
@@mizvitko8109 Thanks! I do not like using stripper and the old varnish on this just flaked off with a scraper. Much easier. I used a wax finish because I like the look and feel of it. It is not as sturdy as a urethane or lacquer but there will be no plants on this and no guests will be using it to hold drinks!!
How cool that this has passed down from your great grandparents! I seem to recall seeing a similar table that was called a "pie crust table" due to the fluted edge of the table.
Whatever it's called, it's beautiful! ❤
Job well done, my friend. I love your approach. No music, no talking, no written instructions, just a REALLY detailed tutorial on how to restore a small solid wood piece. Love your work. It was a GREAT result. Love it! I've subscribed. Can't wait to see what else you have to show us.
Thank you for the nice message. I am very happy you enjoyed this and I will see you in the next one. Welcome to the channel!
I appreciate the old fashioned tried and true methods that I see you use on this console table. I also appreciate your meticulous attention to details. Thanks!
Thank you. I like how it turned out in the end.
I just love your no nonsense approach.
No endless talking and new fandangle tools.
Talent and skill 💗
Thank you for the very nice comment! I am very happy you enjoyed watching it. ✌🏽
Какая
Прекрасная работа , наполненная любовью !!
Спасибо!
You did that table justice. I can't stand dark stain on wood that can stand on its own, like this piece does.
Thank you! Dark stain doesn't do it for me either in most cases. This ended up matching another piece in my house perfectly without me planning that so it worked out well.
I love vintage furniture and many other people as well, I would like if you do more video's.Thank you for restoring them.
Thank you for the kind words. I do plan to post more frequently in the coming year. I hope to see you here. Thanks!
У Вас золотые руки! Спасибо за Ваш труд, за то, что даёте мебели из дерева вторую жизнь.
Спасибо за невероятно добрый комментарий. Увидимся в следующем!
I just finished watching a restoration video on another channel where every step was explained in detail. I loved it and subscribed.
Now I watched this video where not a word was spoken. I loved it equally as much...which is how I ended up subscribed to dozens of channels like this.
I just love watching old furniture being honored and treated with love and respect. It's beautiful and seems much happier now. 😉
Thank you for the great feedback. What is the other channel? I am always looking for good furniture content to watch. Thanks! 🤙
@Restorology Hey, thanks for the reply! It's called "Restoration Endeavors". My two top favorite channels of all time are "Mid-century Modern" (You'll love Barry!!!) and "Modern Makeovers" (his editing style is crazy good). I also like "Transcend Furniture Gallery".
I'd love to hear what you think of them. I also watch a lot of channels where old things are fixed and restored, which is really cool too. I meant to say I subscribed to your channel. 🙂
@@VioletJoy @RestorationEndeavours is fave of mine as well. In my opinion, his narration sets his channel apart from the rest of us. I've tried narrating but I do NOT like the sound of my voice on camera. I have not seen the other channels you mentioned but will check them out this week. I am always looking for good content to binge! If you like commentary about what is being worked on, try @flippingdrawers.
Beautiful restoration. The stain you chose is excellent.
Thank you very much! I have been going with much lighter stains lately and trying different finishes. I will certainly be doing this combo again on a future project. Thanks!!
Looks awesome 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks!!
Not a near religious experience. A real religious experience. Bless these hands that heal. Wonderful attention to the wood. Thank you.
Thank you very much. That is very kind of you to write. Peace! ✌🏽
Love to see it brought back to life, so relaxing to whatch.
So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
Amazing transformation, beautiful table now....Take care...
Thank you for the nice comment. I am happy you enjoyed the video. Cheers!
You did an amazing job bringing that table back to life! It’s looks so beautiful ❤!
Thank you very much!! 🙂
What a lovely little table. It's beautiful. I love it! Such strong work!
Thank you for the great message. I am glad you enjoyed this. Peace!! ✌🏽
Wonderful restoration.👏👏
Such a BEAUTIFUL JOB!!!! LOVE the Stain you chose. Just LOVELY!!!!
Thank you so very much!! This actually was an older stain I had laying around so I was a little worried about using it but I like how it turned out too. Thanks for the feedback.
You've done some very clever touches, my friend. I liked very much. I like the dark color more in wood. Great for me 😊🤗
Thank you very much! I know you like using darker colors but I've always preferred lighter shades. I think I would keep everything natural wood color if it looked okay in my home. 🤙😀
Nice work! Night and day difference.
Thanks! I like how it turned out in the end.
Beautiful! Well done.
Thank you very much!
A remarkable save on a beautiful little table. Great job! ⭐️
Thank you very much!! 🙂
Like it, you did a perfect restoration.
Thank you very much
I need to get a pair of those handy-dandy tools.
The scraper thing? It is super handy and much cleaner than trying to use a stripper.
Beautiful just beautiful
Nice job
🙋♀️👍🥰
Thank you very much!! 🤙🙂
@@Restorology very welcome. You are quite the artist 🎨 🙋♀️🥰👍
Pure talent!
Thank you!
Piękna praca 😍
Dziękuję! ✌🏽
You did an amazingly thorough job (even cleaned the screws). It looks lovely!
Thank you!
Очень красива. Руки золотые мастер. Спасибо за видик.👍👍👍👍👍👍
Спасибо за отличный комментарий. Надеюсь, я увижу вас в следующем! 🍻
... what a stunning piece of furniture this became - lovely! Thanx for the upload - cool job! Greetings from Germany from the silver fox, David 😉🦊
Thank you David in Germany! I really like how it turned out also. I was not sure the top piece would be nice because the old finish was so destroyed. Prost! 🍻
Having the turning device to work on the legs is a game changer. What a lovely outcome. The finding stuff in the junk yard is a great twist on up cycling ---love to see how they transform.
Thanks! I love using my lathe. It's not the best model and it is super old but I got it at an estate sale pretty cheap.
SUPER!👍
Thank you!! ✌🏽
Impeccable workmanship !! I wish i had done this to a table I have from the 40’s. I painted it with caulk paint. My parents had it all their life.
Well I've read that chalk paint is easy to remove...you could start over if you wanted a more classic look. It's never too late!! I am sure it looks great though as is. Thanks for the great feedback. ✌🏽
@@Restorology interesting, I was sweeping around it today thinking about that & then saw your video….Seriously, thinking about it. It’s one of those tables w/ fold down leaves ….is that what they are called ? And Very similar to this table in looks b4 I chalked it !!
Ювелирная работа. Супер финиш...👍👍👍👍
🙏🏽✌🏽🍻
A beautiful piece of furniture... would love it in my house 😊
Thank you very much. This supposedly belonged to my great grandmother.
You did an excellent job. That table is beautiful.
Hey thanks! It did turn out better than I was expecting. I appreciate the feedback. 🤙
Vous faites un excellent travail. La table est magnifique
Merci pour le très gentil commentaire. Je suis heureux que vous ayez apprécié la vidéo.
Beautiful
I like how it turned out. Thank you for the nice feedback. Peace! ✌🏽
I too like the lighter color. Dark is out!!!!
Absolutely! Thanks!!
This is a beautiful table you did a really good job on it. I took a little trip down memory lane, I had one just exactly like that years ago. I lost it in a house fire. We all were thankful to escape with our lives and my kids told me it's just stuff.
I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose everything in a house fire. Sorry you had to experience that. I am surprised at how many people have commented about having this same table and they all have indicated that it belonged to a grandparent or great-parent, myself included. Thanks for sharing. ✌🏽
@@Restorology Thanks I appreciate that. The one I had belonged to my cousin's bf, I was moving into the apartment he was moving out of lol and he left me some furniture. It was my first place on my own and I was young and didn't have a stick of furniture 😂. If I am remembering right, he told me the table belonged to his grandma and she used it at the front door for keys, mail, ect. Then later on as a phone table. That's what I used it for as well, my phone whenever I could afford one. Thanks for sharing and I will keep watching as long as you keep making videos 👍👌
What a beauty
Thank you AGAIN!! 😊
I literally have a table just like this! It was my Grandparents! My Mom had it, then I got it.....this made me Smile!
It turned out Gorgeous! 😊👍
Thank you so much! I am very happy you enjoyed this. My mom told me that she believed that it belonged to my great grandparents.
I have a table like this one. I am so excited to restore it after watching this awesome video. Thank you!
That's awesome...good luck!!
Absolutely gorgeous
Thank you so much!
That might be the tiniest wood repair ever performed
Maybe! I wouldn't have bothered if it didn't stick out when looking at the table from above. Once I knew it was there, it seemed to grow in size every time I looked at it.
Saw the very same table done with copper leaf, navy paint and napkin decoupage. Wasn’t my taste. This is more my cup of tea! Thank you for the hand-rubbed finish!
The finish was worth the extra time it took to do it by hand. It would be boring to show it all on camera. I am going to begin working all of my projects this way unless a piece needs a sturdier surface like a chair or something. I love the feel and look of it. Thanks for the nice feedback.
Would of been such a nice table thanks for making it beautiful again. :)
Thanks!!
Simple cleanup. And stain job! But outstanding results!
Thanks! All it needed was a little cleaning and touch-up.
Good job!
Thanks!
CRAZY! I am refinishing the exact same side table! Beautiful job, I hope mine turns out as well. Or even close to, as well.
I am surprised at how many folks wrote that they have this same table. Everyone seems to have gotten it from a grandparent. This came from my parents, but they got it from my great grandparents. It must have been super common in the early/mid century. Thanks for sharing!
@@Restorology I think it’s adorable. I love ur channel, appreciate the knowledge. You are very talented!

Thank you for the very nice feedback. I am happy you enjoyed the video. See you in the next one!!
Beautiful job.

Really nice job. We had a table very much like that when I was a kid back in the 60s.
That is probably about the right time frame for this one too. Thanks!!
I have one identical to it, it belonged to my grandmother. You’ve inspired me!
@@lisak6226 So I found out that this may have belonged to my great grandparents and may be much older than I first thought. Does yours have any manufacturer's marks or anything to identify it? Mine did not.
@@Restorology not that I can see, but she passed away at 105 years old in 2010 and my mother said she had it when she was still living at home. So it’s very possible it was your great grandmother’s!
@@lisak6226 Thanks for checking!
Loved your video. Very tutorial. Thank you
