Not being funny but when you consider that people who play orchestral instruments or piano etc are seen as amazing and even holy grails and recorder players are seen as jokes by literally EVERYONE, including those who study at conservatoires, it is no surprise recorder players responded.
Conservatoire life be like:

@@malahamavet The two are fundamentally the same in terms of design and technique. The Violin is the highest on the register; the lowest pitch string is G3 the highest string is the E-String 5 (both instruments have 4 strings with 4 notes between each). The Viola's lowest bitch string is C3, and whilst the G, D, A strings that follow are the same pitch as the violin's (I think from observing as a violinist, might be incorrect), the sound is different, given the Viola body's depth and additional length, producing a darker more woody sound.
Indeed, the Viola is the butt of jokes in the String Community due to its similarity to the Violin and the fact that they usually never lead an ensemble, getting lost in between the Violin and Cello. When I was in school orchestra I was mystified by their presence "What do you guys do again, apart from pretending your violins?" Ho-ho.
You handled that very gracefully and I learned a few things. Subscribed 🎶

@@jcheever37 Seasoned guitar players (eletric, acoustic, classical) actually also study music theory and knows a lot about chords, roots, triads ... The blues guitar players and really good ones not just play triads, but 7th, 9th, 11th chords...

Maybe she missed it intentionally, because many people can play both the violin and the viola (many violists have started on the violin and many violinists have learned the viola as well), but very few can also play the cello and the double bass.

Eddy play the recorder like that just because "that kind of recorder" is the type of Asian elementary school forces kids to play, and kids usually play it and sound SUPER terrible. It's kinda a nightmare for asian grown ups.

Personally, I think the recorder gets a bad rap because every elementary music teacher uses them with her class full of kids. (It's the same way with xylophones.) When you have kids bopping one another on the head and turning them into lightsabers the children don't grow up feeling as though they are "real" instruments. I bet the majority of people have never actually heard a professional recorder player in their life. If they did I think many attitudes would change in regards to this beautiful instrument. You should do a collaboration with 2set. It would be amazing to hear you guys play together. 💕
in my old school, students from 4th grade and higher got to choose either recorder and pianica while the younger ones played only recorder. Now I am thinking whether professional pianica player is a thing.

The thing is, anybody can make a mistake. I totally cringed when I saw Eddy not-playing the recorder in the original video. I'm a violinist but at one time I took the recorder quite seriously and practiced intently; so that particular TwoSet video offended me, even though I tried to find it funny, in some way. I hate to say it, because I love these guys and what they've done for classical music the world over. But it was cheap shot, and therefore by definition a lapse in judgement. I think they ought to pull it off RUclips.

Before TwoSetViolin's video I had no idea what a "recorder" is. Their video was clearly made in a good spirit and for fun, so I didn't get a bad first impression of the instrument. Just a good laugh and some vague interest that made me click on this suggested video. And oh boy, it did make my jaw drop. The variety of sounds this instrument is able to produce... it's just amazing.

Yeah, I doubt many people formed their opinion of the recorder based on a twoset roast video. They either already had an opinion or they understand that it's just some fun.
Just so you understand recorder gets no skill to produce a sound while even cheapest sideblown flute does, if Eddy tried to pull the same trick with a flute he'd fail miserably. And there's more recorder in music than you imagine, like go play any celtic or something like that medieval game and listen to music, you'd surely hear a recorder here and there.

(Also I just do not get their viola hate at all. The instrument’s lovely and gets tones that most violins do not. The violist I knew in college actually had everyone begging for him to play with him since there were maybe *FIVE* violists on campus. So yeah. Their hate just comes across as envy. And violists have to play in C clef vs G clef...which is a chore to deal with Just Theoretically since unlike G and F and it just never became Fixed.)

The difference is that violinists are the only ones to bash violas (what. Compensating much? Sure violins may “include part of the viola range” with second violinists but it just does not have that same tone. They’re meant to go high, not low.)

The recorder only has a bad reputation because of the American Public School system imo. Just because they gave them out like cheap toys in 4th grade.
I think it's the same for many more countries. Before I learned an 'actual' instrument I played the recorder. That awful sound still rings in my head whenever I see that instrument mentioned.

And i remember watching my school compete with other schools, it was like sea and the sky😂😂 other schools only have the ordinary yamaha recorder, meanwhile my school have variety kinds of recorder, from the biggest to the smallest ones.
Lots of countries use the recorder to show students/children a way in to music. It’s cheap, easy to stack and almost any kid can make a sound.

As someone who only learned about the recorder in elementary school, this was beautiful, educational, and impressive. Also the "reputation" part was more from an asian parent stand point than in general.
I think it is a pretty accurate depiction of what the general population thinks of recorders. For most people a recorder is a cheap annoying plastic instrument they were forced to learn in elementary school, rather than a broad range of instruments with a lot of potential and versatility. They've also become kind of a meme, which doesn't help.

I think two set fans know most of alllll of their stuff is a joke. They hate on violas a looot but have proven it’s just a joke but talking seriously about them before and playing with professional viola players on their Channel. I am a violinist and I love TwoSet, but I really, really enjoyed your response. What a great way to look at what they do and I would love to see them respond to your response. I do think they were just trying to be funny, much like how they always give the viola players a hard time, but I agree with you, they should consider some of the ramifications. Great job! You gave me a much deeper appreciation for the "simple" recorder.

I don't think she deemed them worthy because they don't play recorder, or didn't have someone who could play on.
It was all in good fun really. The video was so memey it's crazy how some people would find it offensive or take it serious
the thing is, them playing the recorder badly isn’t a joke on recorders or recorder players, they are making fun of themselves. it’s obvious that they don’t know how to play it, so instead of trying to play it well, they tune their ignorance level to 100% instead. it’s sillier and funnier that way. all in good fun. would love to see them react to your reaction.

Isabelle Post basically these 2M who are subscribed to TwoSet, know exactly what is the intention behind every video they post. Also you only see the tip of the iceberg. TwoSet posted a video during which they portrayed the beauty of professional recorder players by showing a pro girl playing a piece in such an incredible and aesthetic way and they emphasized on how beautiful it was. TwoSet will always deliver quality content.

If they can get triggered by how ignorant Hollywood people playing strings then I don't see any reason why people who play other instruments professionally can't get triggered by their jokes. Just because "it's just a joke lmao" doesn't mean people can't be annoyed by it. jokes are jokes if they're funny. if other people don't think the jokes funny then they're invalid.

How I read their point was similar to: the vs. video was obviously a joke video and they have even done a video before about how beautiful a professional recorder player can sound. And after reading your response I was unsure of how what you said could be viewed as a legitimate retort. Unless of course you were using the fact that the message got to less people to judge the video

The only one TwoSet has not roasted is Ling Ling. They’ve roasted so many instruments, musicians, and composers over the years I think everyone who watches their video knows not to take them seriously.
A year ago Twoset made a video seemingly roasting recorders. But end up praising it, IMO.
Idk if you mean that hurtingly or not, but I very much like twoset and will defend them. If you mean that not hurtfully, then yeah, but they let us know when to take some videos seriously. They are VERY funny and they do make a bunch of serious ones.

Cindy Nguyen yeah but the mainstream, non-musician view of the viola is overwhelmingly positive and respected, while the mainstream, non-musician view of the recorder is the exact opposite due to people being forced to play cheap plastic ones as a kid. The viola is viewed by the masses as professional instrument, and is only joked about amongst classical musicians, while the recorder is the butt end of jokes by everyone.

Supposing I made an X vs Y competition without knowing the details and nuances of Y and trashes on it for the sake of 'comedy'(which if said comedy was satire, I'd understand but let's be real twoset isn't satiring anything), it wouldn't be fair for Y.
The basic premise of twoset's comparison videos is that they portray one(the violin and/or classical part) in the correct light and the other part in a dishonest and/or willfully ignorant manner, which if you find it funny more power to you that's your thing and it's fine(i guess) but if people decides to call them out on it i think they are well within their rights to do so.

@@fatguy338 We have open holes under the silver rings which allows us to glissando smoothly up the range with our fingers (it's more difficult, but still pretty possible downwards haha) Also we have embouchure pitch bending to help with the gliss! :D
To be honest we should all thank Twoset for making that video. Thanks to them this response video has received more than 20 times the amount of views this channel usually gets on a video. So more people learning about recorders!

I'm not a recorder player i play the ukulele but in my opinion no instrument is better then others.Every musicians put a lot of work in their instruments so it doesn't matter if you play the flute the violin or the harmonica they are all musical instrument and deserve respect.
The uke is a proper instrument too! Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise! Actually, there's a whole *family* of ukes - at different sizes and pitches also.

I recently came to her channel and am super impressed with how she plays so I immediately subscribed, I love two set too, but I’m almost positive they did this as a joke and not offend anyone, I’m sure they respect all instruments and instrument players. Maybe a collab between both would be great!

But why had they to pick apart the recorder particularly? It already has a bit of a...lower reputation, almost not to be taken seriously as an instrument. I wholeheartedly disagree to this, I was a recorder player for 20 years (though I have to admit I did not get to a comparable level to the lady in this video). Even it was meant to be funny, I felt offended by it. Yes, we should work together, not make each other ridiculous. And yes, a collab or at least a reaction video from TwoSet could save this mess.
Daineishabel Ortiz - I doubt they respect the recorder but would love to be proved wrong. Of course it's a joke but that doesn't mean it can't hurt too. A revenge video where a brilliant recorder player basically does what they did with the recorder, to the violin would be very funny - and fair - I suspect a lot of violin players would be upset - LOL!!

I’m a TwoSetter, but the way you approached this was honestly really interesting and mature, and being fully honest, it was fun watching TwoSet getting a taste of their own medicine, it would be amazing to see a collab through Skype and such, you just earned yourself a new subscriber :))

While a beginner's tone on a recorder is certainly not very pretty, that of a beginner on a violin is WORSE.
It's a squeakfest either way. And that's OK, that's how you start.

I play the "txistu", a three holed instrument (similar to the recorder or Blockeflöte, but played with only one hand), that derives from the XII century and has evolved up to the instrument we know nowadays! I feel so identified with you and your instrument, in a way! Very nice illustration of all the possibilities of the instrument, that are very similar to mine's! Ironically, it was watching TwoSet that encouraged me to learn an instrument (aged 50+ !!) - and I chose the recorder! That was a year ago. Now I’m studying for grade 4, and am learning the treble and sopranino as well as the descant. I love Sarah’s channel, but also love TwoSet! Their light-hearted approach kept me going through my first disastrous public performance and my exam nerves. Hooray for TwoSet and Sarah - it’s amazing to feel part of a musical community through both these RUclips channels. I thought TwoSet’s recorder/violin comparison was funny - and also enjoyed Sarah’s reactions 😆

Same here, as soon as I figure out what box it ended up in... only been 20-21 years for me, so it can't have gotten far. I haven't played my sax in about a decade, and I found that straight away :D

Finger smudging are rly only for clarinet and recorders. Sax and flute have to do an embouchure glissando which is much harder

Hi Sarah! as a long time TwoSet fan I find this really very eye opening. Like literally I am shookt. Jaws on the floor. This is also my first time watching any of your videos and I just knew I had to subscribe. I never knew there were soo many freaking techniques into the recorder and there were soo many other instruments you needed to collect to play the recorder professionally, and honestly this is the first time I even knew contrabases existed! No tea no shade taken at all and thank you for acknowledging what twoset intended the video to be. I actually tried to get into the recorder back in highschool but all I got was just bullying and teasing and my family wasn't very supportive of me getting into music, add to that being in a very rural place recorders weren't such a big thing back then so I quit altogether eventually. I wish there were more opportunities for me back then. Can't help playing this video again and again just to see your amazing (lowkey flexing) playing hahaha. Guess I'll be hanging around in your channel for a while ^_^

When I started the recorder, at least it sounded like I was attempting to play a musical instrument. When I tried the violin it sounded like a cat screeching. It’s pretty impressive that the recorder sounds just as beautiful when you play with your nose.

Things I learned about the recorder that I didn't knew: different fingerings for the same sound, the 100% smooth gilssandos, CHORDS!!!!! (that one was cool as fuck), that it can sound like Eddie Van Halen (10:30)...
Two set were spot on doing the video, after all they "forced" you to make this one defending the recorder, and it's been great to see.
What a great take. I mean, I love this. TwoSet's video was hilarious -- and it was *not* meant at all to be serious. TwoSet clearly love and respect all instruments. But, at the same time, I actually love the fact that she took it serious instead -- and used it as a chance to educate us about the recorder.
If u watch her other videos she already did most of these. There is a video on her channel ages ago ONLY on glissando for example, also on alternative techniques etc etc.

Violinist speaking! This was actually so cool to watch! I learned so much about the recorder from this video, I had no idea how versatile the instrument and recorder players are!
I watch two set quite a lot and i can confirm that this is just viola-level jokes (aka cheep jokes without the actual intended offence), but i'm not sure they should have picked an instrument most people dont hear that much about after a certain level in music playing.
Also i used to be in a folk group where kids could learn and play folk music. The recorder was quite popular there and there was this one older guy and i was just in awe about his playing. It made me wanna learn more about the music you can produce on a recorder. The things you showed in this video make me wanna learn even more.
Edit: there is a video twoset made about a year ago called "the best instrument in the world" where they talk about how its really difficult. They showed a video of a sixteen year-old playing and were impressed by her technique and called her a recorder lingling.
Hey, I found your channel because of the TSV video. We know Brett and Eddy and we know they are more likely to make fun of other instruments. They do Viola jokes, Bass jokes etc as well, all just as silly. You just can't take their shenanigans too seriously.
I love your videos and they are a great source of information and inspiration but I haven't got another recorder yet (since school). Instead, about five months ago I picked up the Irish whistle and now I make Irish whistles. I never saw that coming LOL, but somewhere in the DNA of that is the professionalism I have taken from your videos. Both TSV and Team Recorder videos make me want to practice.
The whistle is the recorder's cousin from the poor side of town, but I make the best whistles I can. They probably sound more like recorders, if a recorder had a brass body.
BTW the gliss technique (partly covering the bell hole) works to get into the second octave on the whistle too. It controls the break, but seems like it will need a lot of practice.

I actually found you because of this twoset video. I searched for recorder players directly after watching it so even though they're joking around and digging at the recorder (all in good fun), they are bringing some awareness to people like me who didn't know about it before
That said this was such a fun video! I had no idea there were so many neat techniques on the recorder!
