A while back, I saw a video of a professional recorder player roasting TwoSet and she had some pretty good facts to back up her claim I sound like an English teacher... oh well
They basically got roasted by the #1 recorder star on RUclips and the #1 upcoming recorder star in the entire world. Lucie Horsch is already a legend and as of this writing, she's not even 22 yet.
Yeah, the flex... I saw the original first, got to that part and my thoughts were "WOAH! Woah, woah, no need to flex that hard! Wow!" Then I saw there's a reaction by TwoSet, watched it, got to this point... MFW Eddy reacts.
hah. same. i mean are chinese instruments profesional? i got no idea. though seriously, in my brain i was like: the recorder is a literal rip off of the chinese bamboo flute thingy (i got no idea wat its called), though i know its maybe probably not.
I didn’t know the recorder was a legit instrument until now. I’ve just heard elementary school kids play it and it usually sounded like an instrument of torture. Thanks for showcasing the recorder!
Yeah, this was me also until today. Cool that TwoSet did this and the recorder community responded in kind, or I probably would have had the same prejudice for years to come!
Yeah our old grumpy cat even smacked me hard in the face with claws when I found my old school recorder and tried play it and gave me a look like never do that again ;)
I played the bassoon in 6th grade, so my music teacher thought I would actually be good at the recorder. I blew the same amount of air for each instrument and ended up shrieking my way through the assignments.
I love how well both Twoset and Sarah took this whole thing. Sarah instead of getting mad respectfully showed what the recorder can do and Brett and Eddy responded very positively and praised her skills. All three are incredible musicians and I just love they way they handled this little “feud”
Recorder player: we are EXPECTED to play all recorders. Saxophone players: expected? We already know how to play all other saxes. And some sax players are expected to play flute and sometimes clarinet
This video brought me to Sarah's channel and then to earnestly starting the recorder at 50 years! After 3,5 years and lots of practicing (YES, go practice!!!!! ;D ) I have reached quite a decent level for such a short time (but having a head start from playing flute as a teeenager and digging out my first grade school recorder in german fingering from time to time) and a lot of musical learning. I am now doing the whole quartett in C and F (still battling with reading the bass clef though) and playing in two ensembles. !!!Thank you very much, TwoSetViolin!!! By the way: Another quite difficult part about playin the recorder is tuning because the tone is very flexible and recorders not in tune with each other have lead to that really horrible reputation of the recorder. I am even thinking about trying the cello when I go into retirement ...
I get my very first recorder (an alto Yamaha) tomorrow, can’t wait to get started! I remember loving the soprano recorder when I was 8 a billion years ago (I’m now 57). I love that anyone can play the recorder young and seasoned. 👍🏻
The nice thing about Twoset is that even when they were roasted hard they take it lightheartedly and continue to make fun of themselves. That's why Twoset is an awesome channel.

@@naco5571 O absolutely! But a piano is not exactly what most people would consider "transportable". That's why you have to be able to play on any given piano, if you are a piano player - because you just can't take it with you the way recorder players can.

The fact that this turned from a reaction to roasting to just appreciating the recorder players and their technique was just so wholesome :] I am so glad I joined this community
Just wanted to say this- I'm not a classical musician, never really loved listening to it( I used to just listen to pop music, sorry Brett lol). This channel exposed me to this genre of music, and I realized that I love it! Being a classical ballet student, the knowledge of classical music really helped me. Still not playing an instrument, but a proud subscriber and avid listener of classical music now! Sorry for this long comment, but all you musicians here, go practice ( for 40 hours everyday of course) P.s.- Please do invite Lucie Horsch to do the Ling Ling challenge
Omg same.. But the fact you learn ballet and i never play classic music even when i am study, i probably still even far faaarr away to have possibility to like and enjoy classical music or opera... Now i love it.........
The thing with the recorder is that at middle school I was basically forced to learn it, but it was only that (same?) plastic cheap instrument Eddy was playing. I didn't know there was a whole world hidden behind that horrible-sounding plastic crap. Very cool!
Everyone in public school here HAS to learn it in music class through basically the entirety of elementary school, lol. I think that’s why it gets mocked so much, because people now associate it exclusively with children’s terrible recitals.
I absolutely LOVE the sound of a renaissance recorder. Over the years, a lot of music that I enjoyed - I thought was flutes - was actually recorders. And I didn't realize that, until I decided to try to learn to play the instrument, myself.
Everyone makes this statement...to say you learned the instrument in 4th grade is kinda laughable if you think about it. You learned about it, but you didn't learn the instrument. At least I certainly didn't in my 4th grade experience. Nothing like the experience I had with a piano teacher for instance. To think, imagine if there were a passable $10 violin, that schools can easily afford, and gave that to hundreds of 4th graders. You would probably think the violin was a terrible instrument.
@@Jeanniebugg I had a similar experience! "Diagon Alley", "Stairway to Heaven", and "A Place to Call Home" (Uematsu) were big reasons why I had wanted to learn the flute; although I had learned the trumpet instead, due to various factors, when I eventually came around to picking up a recorder again as an adult, I realized how much I had misunderstood what I had heard as a child!
@@yiledute recorder didn't have any reputation as a professional instrument to begin with so that skit is just rubbing salt in the wound. At least that's what i think as someone who doesn't play any instruments.
I love how even when they roast instruments, eventually they still overall just shed more light and curiosity on them, and have the general population more familiar with them. like, I did not think much of the recorder much before they made their roast video. but the fact they are giving a voice to the recorder gang and educating themselves with us made me genuinely interested in this instrument and realize how lovely it can sound. twoset doing their job even through roasts👏

The reason why the viola community doesn’t say anything is because we generally enjoy what two set makes. Plus, I’m just weird and actually find the viola jokes funny.
I think it's tiresome to hear the same joke over and over again. I wanted to convince someone to try out the viola, his reason not to was the jokes, which means it's actually hurting orchestras because many desperately need more violists. I'm fine with some jokes, but if you buy an instrument just to shit on it you're taking it a bit too far. I like Brett and Eddy, but a video like this about violas would definitely be nice for a change
Much respect to both of you - you can roast but you can also take it when you know you're wrong, or should I say be curious to learn what you don't know
I play the recorder since I was 9 and the violin since I was 59, so I am on both sides! I liked this playful recorder-violin war so much! Especially during lockdown. It was so nice to discover the recorder gang because of the video of TwoSet! I also discovered some new RUclips recorder channels. Thank you so much for that TwoSet violin! But why is there no recorder emoticon? 🎻😘
can you imagine... if, as a violin player, you had to master the Bass Viol, the Contrabass, the ViolonCello, the Cello, the Viola, the Violin, the treble violin, the mezzo violin and the descant violin? Not only that, but you had to be able to shift from one to the other during a performance.... without a mistake.
It's an incorrect comparison. To play recorder is much easier than to play violin (I say it as a violin and flute player (which is harder then the recorder)). Even flute players should be able to play piccolo and alto flute, while violinist should only play violin. If the violin were such an easy instrument as the recorder, then violinist should play the whole violin family too.
@@catherineswan4147 i genuinely don’t believe flute is harder than recorder at all. just saying. the fingering is simple and straight forward. keys instead of all open holes. there’s a reason baroque flute is harder than the modern flute…. and it’s much more like the recorder. the fingerings are absurdly complex. also flute and piccolo have identical fingering and are in the same key. recorders change key, fingering, and the player is expected to transpose pretty much any piece. oh, and they come in totally different tuning as well. not the same as playing every string instrument but seriously flute is not harder by any stretch.
@@billyt8868 I've played Viola, Violin, guitar, Trumpet, and tried to play the Flute, (lol, I passed out) The Recorder is an ancient instrument, and it is FAR from easy. I would expect violinists to know the Bass Clef, Treble, Tenor, Alto and even shaped notes, because that's just part of music, but Recorder Players have to actually PLAY those notes. When i had a professor, in University, who was a MASTER of recorder, I learned that the instrument had more to offer than any other, if the performer was up to the challenge. It's just a case of needing to know the depth of the pool, before you swim in it.
@@victorrutledge257 It's still an incorrect comparison. for an example, the bass and the viola require you to hold them different ways, use different techniques, etc. as well. being able to shift seamlessly from instrument to instrument should not be expected of violinists as it is expected of recorder players because violins are a lot bigger than their equivalent recorders. additionally, mastering the entire violin octet is not necessary as the violone and violin already cover the entire range of all the recorders.
Violists: gets roasted multiple times Recorder players: gets one joke made about them Violists: oh well i guess one more doesn’t matt- *_Recorder players: what the fu-_*
I joined my school orchestra not understanding how to read music properly, now I'm the most senior percussionist and play timpani and anything else they need. Still hate the xylophone
I'm a recorder player and an organist and when studying at university, if asked, I would say my instrument was the recorder just to watch people's hilarious reactions. Sooo many dumb struck faces as well as people thinking I was pulling their leg. People have no idea the recorder is a "real" instrument and not just a cheap toy to get kids into music. The instrument's reputation is so bad, that the school itself wouldn't let anyone major in recorder performance. My recorder prof was furious.
I honestly just say get good at music all together, no matter what instrument, then all instruments seem easier to learn once technique is in place. I seen a guy with a one string guitar and a sheet of metal play billie jean. Simple, but still amazes people. Moving from Guitar to Bass guitar was no real difference, but from Trombone to Trumpet was. I enjoy Trombone most though.
@@christianknuchel right?! It is just ridiculous. I blame the public school system (in Canada at least) for not teaching the recorder properly and making people think it's a toy.
@@rylanmerrick It's done here in the U.S. as well. While I am not a recorder professional, nor do I really know how to play it at all, one thing I have noticed is that the recorder is used as a bridge instrument in elementary schools (think 3rd year) to teach kids how to read music and basic finger dexterity, but just becomes a massive joke. I had a recorder concert at the end of 3rd grade with my entire grade playing at once, and my friend and I stood at the top center having a conversation instead of playing (not because we didn't respect it, we didn't like our teacher or the piece). The recorder is purely a joke amongst non-classical instrumentalists all around the world, I would assume.
Mmina Maclang Thank you! Everyone sounds like this is a war and Twoset “choose death”. I think most of the recorder videos roasting is quite nice and Twoset really enjoy this. They realise someone sooner or later will roast them back and aren’t upset about it.
Wow, I had no idea recorders could actually sound good. I've honestly never heard a good example of recorder before, wonder how much more exciting the obligatory recorder lessons would've been if we could have heard pieces like this first?
Violists: How do we... Violists: Are we going to? Violists: All at once or do we take turns? Violists: We need a computer maybe 2nd Violists: You mean like an abacus or something? Violists: *Start playing again, but a different piece* *Recorder player walks in* *Long pause* *Shakes head slowly* *Walks out* Violist: Was that the conductor?
Pianos are already well respected outside of the TwoSet bubble, which is why it has no impact for TwoSet to go after piano players. That's not the case with recorder players, who already face stigma in other musical institutions and in the face of the public. Good comedy is punching up, not punching down.
@Sparticus Booker Dude, chill out as a Violist I can say to you take the jokes as jokes. They screw with the Viola every single time. So just chill ou man.
@Sparticus Booker This is one of the times where it was genuinely a joke and you're actually just choosing to get mad. Like, why go through life like that bro? You're going to go grey early putting that much emotional investment into nothing.
I can appreciate the humor! It's just recorder players can get defensive because we are almost NEVER taken seriously. A lit of the time we get this reputation of never picking up a real instrument and therefore not real musicians. I know that wasn't the intention behind these videos and I really appreciate this video in responce!
as someone who plays/played the bassoon and knows a thing about weird fingering, the fingering on a recorder is harder than any wind instrument by far. then to be able to play in different keys like it’s nothing 🤯

And I didn't realize that, until I decided to try to learn to play the instrument, myself.
yes same!
"Diagon Alley", "Stairway to Heaven", and "A Place to Call Home" (Uematsu) were big reasons why I had wanted to learn the flute; although I had learned the trumpet instead, due to various factors, when I eventually came around to picking up a recorder again as an adult, I realized how much I had misunderstood what I had heard as a child!

can you imagine... if, as a violin player, you had to master the Bass Viol, the Contrabass, the ViolonCello, the Cello, the Viola, the Violin, the treble violin, the mezzo violin and the descant violin?

The instrument's reputation is so bad, that the school itself wouldn't let anyone major in recorder performance. My recorder prof was furious.
Seems us harmonica players gotta stick close to recorder players... we have the same problems
Unbelievable. I mean, it makes sense if people who don't really care about classical music have these misconceptions. But an entire school...?
I honestly just say get good at music all together, no matter what instrument, then all instruments seem easier to learn once technique is in place.
Mmina Maclang Thank you! Everyone sounds like this is a war and Twoset “choose death”. I think most of the recorder videos roasting is quite nice and Twoset really enjoy this. They realise someone sooner or later will roast them back and aren’t upset about it.
7:35 Eddy: "I'm all for this flex"
Brett: " Please keep flexing on us"
violinist language for "hot"
dolphinsandsunsets ikr they suddenly ran out of roasts and just sat there listening
Simps
"She likes my tounging , I like her contrabass" I just love Eddy's soft jokes
I know his dad jokes are lit. As a classical musician, this always gets me. 😂😂😂
@@Jakeroo767 Hehe The more they get used to the community the more they let go with the jokes. I haven't seen much "Editor-san" jokes lately btw.
Wow, I had no idea recorders could actually sound good. I've honestly never heard a good example of recorder before, wonder how much more exciting the obligatory recorder lessons would've been if we could have heard pieces like this first?
And that's why I really, really wish teachers would at least play a recording of someone like Lucie Horsch in class.
As a flute player, I laughed so hard when they compared recorder and flute to viola and violin. Didnt expect debussy faun to played there ahahahahaha
I thought it was Syrinx LOL
Right? I had to stop and look again for a second when I heard it.
Recorders: **Roasts twosetviolin**
Violists: Should we also....???😐
That would be interesting to see
There were so many chances, so many...
Violists: How do we...
Violists: Are we going to?
Violists: All at once or do we take turns?
Violists: We need a computer maybe
2nd Violists: You mean like an abacus or something?
Violists: We should get together on this
2nd Violists: *Start playing*
Violists: Stahp Stahp
Other Violists: No GO GO GO
First Violist: Taps for silence
Violists: Why does he keep doing that
Smart violist: It's just nervous habit, he does it all the time.
Violist: We are not playing here, we need to make a video!
Small Violist at the back: Did he say "play"?
Violists: *Start playing again, but a different piece*
*Recorder player walks in*
*Long pause*
*Shakes head slowly*
*Walks out*
Violist: Was that the conductor?
if you can, go for it
@@Tubluer can I join also? I'm a violist.
“We can play chords too”
**imitates fire alarm**
LOL...that's a GOOD one!!
Lmaaaooo
“Yea i’m not sure that counts as a chord, but I get your point”
yes
"Is it because it's a $10 instrument, or I'm just sh*t" 🤣
Her : They're not even trying !!
TwoSet : We were not, in fact, trying xD
I feel like the first girl didn't get it lol
@@davidhuang5042 she doesn't, obviously
I didn’t like her... She was very aggressive...
Branford Families
You should watch some of her vids. She’s amazing and extremely nice.
where's piano gang when they tried to roast us, they kinda like half did and half roasted themselves.
Goldenoodles ehh im a pianist and im fine with them roasting us cause i know there just meming
Piano is too superior to be properly roasted, tbh
Pianos are already well respected outside of the TwoSet bubble, which is why it has no impact for TwoSet to go after piano players. That's not the case with recorder players, who already face stigma in other musical institutions and in the face of the public. Good comedy is punching up, not punching down.
They wouldn’t have accompaniment without us soooo
I actually want to see some piano x piano action, classical x jazz
Ok I now stan the girl who made a YT channel just to roast y’all 😂😂
She "You're not even trying!."
Twoset Violin: "That's the point."
@Sparticus Booker Dude, chill out as a Violist I can say to you take the jokes as jokes. They screw with the Viola every single time. So just chill ou man.
@Sparticus Booker calm down man...
@Sparticus Booker This is one of the times where it was genuinely a joke and you're actually just choosing to get mad. Like, why go through life like that bro? You're going to go grey early putting that much emotional investment into nothing.
Sparticus Booker LMFAO ... okay bud
@@guilhermepuppim8471 Plot twist. Hes joking
Article 14.2a: Ling Ling insurance doesn't cover recorders.
Aw that's sad 😂
I can appreciate the humor! It's just recorder players can get defensive because we are almost NEVER taken seriously. A lit of the time we get this reputation of never picking up a real instrument and therefore not real musicians. I know that wasn't the intention behind these videos and I really appreciate this video in responce!
as someone who plays/played the bassoon and knows a thing about weird fingering, the fingering on a recorder is harder than any wind instrument by far. then to be able to play in different keys like it’s nothing 🤯
I felt that way too much. There are entire orchestras build out of only recorders especially in the UK.
*cries in viola*

I never thought that recorder wasn’t a real instrument some BS like that. Just like violin, I only hate the type of sound it makes.
Very diplomatic of you :)
You guys are such good sports, love it 💜
