  • In 1967 the era of the Original Six came to a close when the league doubled in size from six to twelve teams. This first expansion class would open the doors that have led to the 30-team NHL that we know today.
Today we are going to look at the team from South Broad Street, the Philadelphia Flyers.

Fun Fact: Of the original 6 expansion teams, only the Flyers maintained the same ownership beyond a few years. From 1967 until his death in 2016 the Flyers were owned either in whole or in part by Ed Snider.

A little background on the Flyers/Islanders series in 1975. The Flyers did have the series swept but the officials waved off the series winning goal the Flyers scored with no time left. Back then(with no replay and no in goal cameras, etc), the game clock was tied in with the goal judge lights. When the clock got down to 0:00, the blue light would automatically come on. However, at the end of game 4, the Flyers put the puck in the net and the red light came on before the blue light. The officials got together and waved off the goal, sending the game into overtime when the Islanders won so thanks to shoddy officiating, the Flyers played 3 more games than they had to.

I remember the ''Broad Street Bullies'' very well and with no fondness. My Leafs had to eventually punch back. Other teams like Montreal and the NY Islanders extinguished Philadelphia's brief reign at the top. The Flyers,I still believe, didn't have to goon it up to ridiculous extremes. They had enough talent to compete and do it well. They toughened up my team for sure, but it wasn't hockey the way it's supposed to be played. No,they didn't originate such tactics;they just sunk them to an all time low.

Yes they did. It might behoove you to watch the Broad Street Bullies video here on RUclips. What had happened was the Flyers in the early years focused more on scoring but come playoff time they were getting pummeled by the Blues and the Plager brothers. Keith Allen and Ed Snider decided they won't ever get out muscled again. And Montreal only swept that series because MacLeash and Parent were injured.

@@Rockhound6165 It doesn't behoove me at all. It still ISN'T the way hockey is supposed to be played. And I HATED it when the Leafs started playing this way. Dave Williams was and still is a jerk and regularly got pounded by Gillies. No,Montreal was building a dynasty. Parent and MacLeish might have won the Flyers a game or two. The Habs USED to know what they were doing and drafted and traded well. The guard was changing and fast. They were winning 90% of their games. I HATED them because I knew they were unstoppable.

@@mike196212 you're acting like the Flyers invented this. They did not. They just figured out how to use it to their advantage and it worked brilliantly. As for the '76 finals, the Flyers lost all 4 games by a combined goal differential of 5 meaning if they had one of their best scorers they might have won the series not to mention they didn't have their legend of a goalie in net. They did win the regular season series vs Montreal that year going 2-1-1 against them so it's not out of the realm of possibility and let's not forget that the Flyers dominated, not just won but dominated the supposed best hockey team in the world in the Soviet Red Army team that year, a team that the Canadiens could only get a tie.

Liking that old-time microphone. A subtle nod to Foster Hewitt, perhaps?
