Imagine how many Keanu roles Brandon might have taken. Or a movie that featured them both. The Matrix and John Wick clearly took inspiration from the Crow as well.

The scene Brandon was shot is the one with Fun Boy and that actor, Michael Massee was the one with the gun. He was traumatized, stopped acting for awhile and never watched the film. So sad bc he was not responsible in any way.

Fun fact for this film: While the crow is unharmed, Eric's face paint stays pristine, even in the rain (symbolizing Eric's immortality). Once the crow is injured in the church, Eric's face paint begins to smear and eventually wash off (indicating he is now mortal again).

I believe that’s correct. The director and studio was hesitant on finishing the movie at first cause Brandon sadly passed away , and he didn’t finish filming some of his scenes, but as you mentioned Linda gave me the thumbs up to finish it and Brandon would have wanted that. They used Brandon stunt body double to finish his scenes

    • @spacemonkeymafia4756

Here is an snip from it
"Because we do not know when we are going to die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well and yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood? An afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you cannot conceive of your life without it? Perhaps 4 .... 5 times more. Perhaps not even that.
How many times will you watch the full moon rise ...... Perhaps twenty and yet it all seems limitless.
This is the point of view this character is coming from in the whole film, because it has brought sharply into focus how precious each moment of his life was.
This is the best role I have had the opportunity to get my hands on."

@@spacemonkeymafia4756 He and the script captured that essence so well. And it is a bit of wonder that Brandon got to inhabit and embrace that perspective, during his last period of time on earth, while shooting this film. Being no stranger to losing a loved one at an early age, I'm sure he already had familiarity to these things, as well. But still, it brings a little bit of light to know he had been embracing that headspace leading up to his tragic and untimely death. 🖤

Chad Stahelski and Jeff Cadiente doubled for the late Brandon Lee for the reshoots for The Crow. Chad Stahelski was really devastated by his friend's death and when it came to directing John Wick he took it upon himself to make safety a priority. Jeff Imada served as a stunt coordinator in this film and appears as a crime boss during the whole first time meeting and he gets stabbed by Brandon's Eric Draven. Chad served a stand-in during the reshoots with the scene of him putting the white powder with the reveal of Lee's face added via digitally through Industrial Light and Magic.
Brandon and Chad both trained at the Inosanto Academy during the 90s.

I’ve had arguments with friends about Darla and the morphine scene. I say Eric instantly got her clean or at least detoxed, and my friends say he merely squeezed out the most recent hit. My argument is that she seems to immediately ‘wake up’ from the fog we see her in throughout the movie up to this point, and simply removing the most recent hit from her system would put her into withdrawal, not convince her to reconcile with her daughter.

After Lee's on-set death during production, Stahelski stood in for him as his body double to complete the film. If I'm not mistaken, that reveal shot of Eric Draven wearing the make-up for the first time is Lee's face digitally overlayed onto Stahelski's body by ILM. It's probably the first time digital effects were used to put one actor's face onto another actor's body and practically the birth of "deepfakes".

I was a huge fan of Brandon's dad. When Brandon came along with his own style and confidence, he amazed a lot of people. He had just done a movie (Showdown in little Tokyo) with Dolph Lundgren (Rocky 4/Expendables) that got mixed reviews, not of Brandon, but the pacing of the movie. The prop guns are really becoming a problem in Hollywood. On my way out to living on the Olympic Peninsula, I had to stop in Seattle to visit Bruce and Brandon's gravesite. While there I met some amazing people who traveled from Hong Kong to honor them as well.

James O'Barr wrote the comic "the Crow" to deal with the grief of his girlfriend dying after being hit by a drunk driver. The director asked him if he could turn it into a movie and he agreed as long as he could be on set for reference. When Brandon died during filming (3 weeks before his own wedding) James began to blame himself for his death. Elisa (Brandon's fiance) never once blamed James and stayed friends with him, James says she was instrumental in helping him let go of his self hatred and move on.

The thing I love most about this movie is the balance. This could have so easily been a shoot 'em up revenge movie, but they made you care about him. Yes, he was violent, but it was balanced with moments of tenderness and vulnerability, so his acts never seemed gratuitous. His actions seemed justified because you saw his suffering. You saw what he lost.
The moment that always gets me is when he's talking to Albrecht in his flat, and Albrecht says, 'Are you going to vanish into thin air again?'
And Eric replies,'I thought I'd use your front door'.
These little moments that grounded Erics character and showed his humanity are what makes this film so good. They make you root for him, they make you feel for him. So when he unleashes hell you are willing him to succeed.
I love this film, I have seen it more times than I can count and it hits me in the feels everytime.
Brandon Lee was a force of nature, I really wish we could have seen more character driven films from him, he was so much more than the martial arts films that he was known for.

This movie heavily influenced my teen years and I remember going through Internet rabbit holes for every single Brandon Lee and behind the scenes trivia -
The following scenes were completed after Brandon Lee's death: Draven first enters the apartment after digging himself out of his grave: footage of Lee walking through an alley in the rain was digitally composed into the scene where he walks through the doorway. Computer technology added drops of water to the door frame to make the water on his back not seem out of place. The shot of Draven falling from the window was made by digitally composing Lee's face (complete with simulated blood) onto a body double. The scene where Draven puts on his make-up was filmed using a double. The face in the smashed mirror was Lee's, computer-altered to fit the shards. The image of Draven walking towards the window with the crow on his shoulder was a double with Lee's face added during lightning flashes. When Sarah visits the apartment, we never see Draven's face as it is a double.

Came a little late to the post but just wanted to express how much I appreciate this intelligent, film literate and open minded reaction to this seminal film. I watch every reaction to The Crow I can find and sadly I'm often disappointed by creators who gripe stupidly about things like the jagged, stylized editing scheme, non- pedestrian plotting, etc. It's a pleasure and privilege to share the experience again with people who get it. One of the things I like about The Crow is the showcase it offers for great character actors of the era especially among the villains, like gravel voiced Michael Wincott, Cohen Bros vet Jon Polito (Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink) and David Patrick Kelly, memorable villain from The Warriors (78) In a welcome return and the great Tony Todd (Candyman, Night Of The Living Dead remake) . Anyway cheers, loved it.

Lol
Now, the movie is extra emotional for me when I watch it. It's been 18 years since I had to take mom off of life support when I was 25, and all of the things we shared over this movie and films like it always come flooding back when I watch it again. Truth be told, now, I can't watch it without crying a little by the end of it. I miss her a lot. She's why I got into healthcare... In a weird way, having to have cared for her all those years ended up being the greatest gift I could give: getting me ready to take care of others.

The comic-book series, created by James O' Barr was inspired by a tragedy in his own life.
It debuted in 1989 and picked up quite a following from readers including myself.
Although Eric was the main character, others (before and after) would be resurrected by this myth to follow suit.
Supernatural, Rock-goth, revenge, suspense drama-thriller is a lot to blend together and it worked.
Brandon Lee is surrounded by an incredible cast with his 4th film as leading man and his most iconic ever.
The movie is dedicated to him and his fiancee, actress Eliza Hutton.
Stunt legend Chad Stahelski in one of his earliest films as Brandon's stunt double in most of the film (so cool).
The director Alex Proyas also made Dark City (1998) and I.Robot (2004).
Among the top 10 comic to film adaptations of that era.
Among the all-time best soundtracks of the 1990s, selling 3.8 million copies.
There were 3 sequels:part 2 is an direct one and theatrically released (a director's cut exist).
3 & 4 are standalone and straight to video.
A syndicated tv series subtitled 'Stairway to Heaven' (1998-1999) with Mark Dacascos in the title role.
Although Brandon Lee passed on, he truly left a impression on the culture.
Check out his 2 other films:Showdown In Little Tokyo (1991) and Rapid Fire (1992).
You gotta watch the films of his father, Bruce.

Random fact, shortly after finishing The Crow, it's director, Alex Proyas, was signed to direct Casper (1995) and there was a script made for his version. He said it was more darker, less comedic, more deconstructionist, and would've had genuine heart for kids, and said he took inspiration for The Wizard of Oz that's timeless and heartfelt. But November 1993, he left after creative differences with the studio and the script was rewritten by the Animaniacs/Tiny Toon writers, who's never written a live action more prior, were hired to lame it up and hired a TV director. Proyas even said later the film was wasted opportunity and felt the emotions came off forced.
I for one would've loved to see the director of THE CROW make Casper. Crow was already a deep and emotional movie with amazing visuals, and we could've gotten something similar for kids instead of a movie with Marky Mark and Opera references. 😞

Actually there's a deleted scene where Fun Boy comes out of the bathroom with the razor that Darla dropped. Hence why they showed it drop like it was supposed to play a bigger part later. Fun Boy was supposed to attack him and slash at him multiple times cutting him open. The tape was to keep his insides in and his stomach together. You can actually see remnants of the attack in the scene where he walks away from the fire Crow emblem after T Bird's death with the back of the coat torn up. That was from Fun Boy's initial attack. They cut out the scene, but kept the aftermath with the tape and torn jacket.

Because of the out-of-order filming, Brandon was body doubled only a few times, like walking in the apartment during the beginning. He did majority of the film. Other times, the body double would be there but the face wouldn't be seen, like hugging Sarah.
Finally, I know some consider this a horror movie. Some, just a comic book movie. I consider it a modern gothic romance, in the vein of the Victorian classics.
