The sweeping music, combined with some of the visuals, really adds a kind of grandeur to this that marks Stargate out as something out of the ordinary, I think. The Egyptological details (the hieroglyphs, the language, etc) are all grounded very much in historical authenticity; we can even suggest that Jackson's comment on age of the Stargate on Earth (5-6,000 years) is probably a better estimate than Colonel O' Neill's estimate of ten thousand years.
I was in school when this came out, and in our Latin class the teacher told us that the ancient language community was very excited about this movie, because the language they used was based closely on real scholarship about how they think Ancient Egyptian was spoken.
Good reaction. One thing many people fail to realize or appreciate, is that as advanced as we are today, there are still tribes living in the Amazon and on Pacific islands that are living in the stone age. And if the more ethical outcome goes down, the decedents of those people will be still happily living that tribal life 100 or 200 years into the future when the rest of human civilization is building cities on other planets and moons in the Solar System!
It is so much fun to see two people watch this, who have no idea what is going on, with how many times I've watched it, and 17 seasons of the various shows. This is why I watch reactions 👍
I always assumed that mentioning Jackson's foster parents was to establish that Catherine knew he didn't have anyone or anything in the way of him committing to the project. And then, of course, at the end it made sense that he would stay because he didn't have anyone to tie him to earth.
I don't know if that really was a derivative of ancient Egyptian, but when this movie came out a lot of critics were like, "Oh, you can't just learn a dead or alien language in an hour, so there was no way Dr. Jackson could have learned how to speak it so quickly" and linguists actually replied, the idea that he just had to learn how to pronounce the vowels correctly was completely accurate. They said it was the most accurate portrayal of learning how to speak and dead language that had ever been portrayed in a film.
The language the off-world humans were speaking was actually ancient Egyptian. I love how there are no subtitles for that until Daniel realizes how to speak it. So many subtle touches, like the quality of the costumes you mentioned, make this movie special. And how about that soundtrack by David Arnold?! Great reaction, ladies!
Love this movie. I think it's my fave sci fi film. The story is unique and super interesting at the same time. The TV-series that came after expanded the world and it got a good 10 seasons with multiple spin-off shows and TV movies.
This was composer David Arnold's first major studio gig. He'd just come off of a small budget British/American crime thriller called The Young Americans, but this film opened up A LOT of doors to him, which led to him (among many other great films) becoming the late John Barry's natural successor in scoring the Bond movies.
SG-1 is a huge commitment, but one of the truly fantastic things (besides character development even for repeat guests) is that they actually progress and incorporate lessons learned across episodes and seasons. I love Star Trek, but for the most part it's static, the same ship against the same sort of threats. SG-1 is constantly upping the game for both enemies and allies. Everyone learns and changes and so does the tech for both good and bad.
Inspiration for the Stargate movie came from a book, originally written in the 1960s by Erich Von Däniken called "Chariots of the Gods". His work started the modern ancient astronaut or ancient alien theory, where beings interacted with early human civilization depicted from cave paintings, relics, Greek and Egyptian mythology, and other world religious iconography. Roland Emmerich, who directed Stargate, went with it. I loved the movie and all the television spinoffs.
One of my favorite movies from my childhood! The Stargate Theme Song was used in a lot of movie trailers: JUMANJI Dragonheart Warriors Of Virtue The Man In The Iron Mask Lost In Space Dungeons And Dragons The Time Machine Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow
I think the point of mentioning the foster parents specifically was to show the viewer that Daniel doesn’t have ties to Earth. So it was easier for him to go through the stargate and for him to stay.
The details about Daniel’s past was to show he has nothing tying him down on Earth. He really had nothing to go back to. Highly recommend watching through Stargate SG-1 if you liked this. It’s a fantastic show.
The plans for the 2nd&3rd continuing films failed to find backing. but it lead to MGM doing five TV series(Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis were two of the best Sci-fi shows of that Era of TV) and two tv films(Ending the Stargate SG-1 storys.). So now Stargate is owned by Amazon and new shows and films are being worked on to come out in the next few years.
There is a book series with 5 books as sequels that went in a totally different direction than the TV series, but was really epic action if they would have made them into movies.
This movie dropped the summer we moved back to the US - I was 13. Huge Sci-fi and History nerd. Still have a warm spot for this one - if I see it on TV, I leave it on.
Regarding watch order: Stargate (1994 film) Stargate SG-1 (1997 series) Stargate: Infinity (2002 series) Stargate: Atlantis (2004 series) Stargate: The Ark of Truth (2008 film) Stargate: Continuum (2008 film) Stargate: Universe (2009 series) Stargate Origins (2018 series) Both Ark of Truth and Continuum take place after 10 seasons of SG-1, so do not watch it without having seen SG-1. In the above list, you may want to skip Infinity, which is animated. Have fun watching for the next 200+ hours !
This movie spawned a much loved TV series, several in fact. Season one started off a little stiff, but it found its footing, and the effects, acting, and writing definitely got better.
So, so, so much fun watching you two watch this for the first time. My family has loved Stargate and all the various tv series for years. Its fun watching you explore this and figure things out for the first time. I loved watching you watch this movie.
My favorite part about this movie is when Daniel is explaining about the rebellion.... because we find out later that he (and Jack O'Neill) was involved :) But that's like the 9th or 10th season of Stargate SG-1.
I would, too, and I think Steph and Achara would love it, but where would they start? All the way back at TOS? TNG? DS9 gets super serialized that you can’t really skip episodes once it gets fully into its stories... There’s just a lot of Trek and it’s be a major undertaking. But, I would love it 🖖❤️
@@Vulcanerd They don't have to watch everything! Maybe: top ten Classic episodes = Star Trek 1 to 6 = top twenty "The Next Generation" episodes = Star Trek 7 to 10 = the three J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies? ✌️
As others have said, this movie spawned an entire franchise that I would highly recommend watching (SG-1 is first, then Atlantis, and finally Stargate Universe; I don't recall where the television movies fit into the timeline). Two of the actors from this movie reprised their roles in SG-1: Alexis Cruz as Skaara, and Erick Avari as the village leader (I can't remember the character's name). When Michael Shanks auditioned for the role of Daniel Jackson, he supposedly did his best James Spader impression, and successfully landed the role. Also, much of the set design was used in SG-1.
21:00 Ernest, was played by Jim Varney. The character from this film who plays Lietenant Ferretti was played by French Stewart, who was also on the TV show 3rd Rock From the Sun
Now, watch Kurt Russell again Big Trouble in Little China, Breakdown, Death Proof, Miles to Graceland, Unlawful Entry, Tango & Cash & Executive Decision.
how about when he worked for Disney for a few movies about a college student named Dexter Riley: The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969); Now You See Him, Now You Don't (1972); and The Strongest Man in the World (1975).
I'm a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, but Stargate is my favorite universe by far. SG-1 was a nearly perfect series with a great cast and amazing chemistry.
In the desert's heat, where costumes gleamed, two voices shared a wondrous dream. Expectations tossed aside, they found a blend of worlds collide. She praised the sets, worn and true, crafted with a master’s view. Not a trace of modern’s sheen, but ancient art, where past had been. The music’s sweep, ethereal, grand, a score that took them by the hand. Transported to a time long gone, where every note was finely drawn. They marveled at the actors’ grace, in foreign tongues, each line in place. No CGI, just what was real, a world where truth was all they’d feel. A creature strange, yet oddly sweet, a friend they'd love, but not to meet. With voices clear, they left their praise, for a film that held them in a daze.
After this you totally have to dive into the Stargate TV franchise. A bit different but totally worth it as an iconic scifi show. Fun fact. We have Ultron, Ego, and Korath from the MCU in this movie.
If you think Kurt Russell does little talking in this movie, you should react to “Soldier”. It’s a 1998 military sci-fi movie that is, in my opinion, very underrated.
i'm not sure you noticed in the beginning when they came to reactivate kurt russel. his son had shot himself with his gun. he was sitting in the room holding the gun he was having "extremely unhealthy thoughts" in that scene.
Fun Fact: Stargate used the same egyptology consultant that was later used in the first two Mummy films and it is a reconstruction of ancient Egyptian language based of coptic church in Egypt that preserved it through the times in a spoken form.
David Arnold made the soundtracks for Independence Day, many James Bond movies, Zoolander and many other films. He also worked with Woody Allen. A great composer, less famous than others but with Stargate he made a true masterpiece
So... The film inspired a TV series, Stargate SG-1, which starred Richard Dean Anderson as O'Neil, Michael Shanks as Daniel, and other new characters played by Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge. This was a launching pad for 2 different series, Stargate: Atlantis (which featured a young Jason Momoa) and Stargate: Universe (which starred Robert Carlyle). This was also the film previous to Independence Day made by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. SG-1 (which lasted for 10 seasons) and Atlantis (which lasted for 6 seasons) are worth watching! The actor playing Ra was Jaye Davidson. He is British and has only made 2 films. His first film was The Crying Game, starring Stephen Rea and Forest Whitaker and directed by Neil Jordan. The film was a critical darling that got several Oscar nominations, including a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Jaye in a role that carries a massive twist in the film. After that, he made Stargate but didn't like making films...so he quit. He now works in the fashion industry.

"It looks liquid"...... that's right, its how they did that effect. It's literally the vortex created by someone stirring water.
Was it an ILM effect?
@@jmitchell3 No sure, might have been .
Jaye Davidson, who plays Ra, was easily one of the most beautiful actors of my childhood. I was always captivated by him as this character.
It is so much fun to see two people watch this, who have no idea what is going on, with how many times I've watched it, and 17 seasons of the various shows.
This is why I watch reactions 👍
“Have no idea what’s going on” lol I’m there with you
I always assumed that mentioning Jackson's foster parents was to establish that Catherine knew he didn't have anyone or anything in the way of him committing to the project.
Next SG-1! SG-1!! SG-1!!! Let’s Go!!!!
Film he speaks less is "Soldier" very good film as well.
"I think this is the least I've seen Kurt Russell talk..."
Time to watch Soldier. You can probably count his lines on two hands 👐
Love this movie. I think it's my fave sci fi film. The story is unique and super interesting at the same time. The TV-series that came after expanded the world and it got a good 10 seasons with multiple spin-off shows and TV movies.
James Spader was SO
Beautiful 🌹☮️🌹
You have to watch ALL of the Stargate TV show now, if you do I will literally watch every single video of this you put out.
This movie is awesome. It's so rewatchable.
The Stargate Theme Song was used in a lot of movie trailers:
JUMANJI
Dragonheart
Warriors Of Virtue
The Man In The Iron Mask
Lost In Space
Dungeons And Dragons
The Time Machine
Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow
I think the point of mentioning the foster parents specifically was to show the viewer that Daniel doesn’t have ties to Earth. So it was easier for him to go through the stargate and for him to stay.
The details about Daniel’s past was to show he has nothing tying him down on Earth. He really had nothing to go back to. Highly recommend watching through Stargate SG-1 if you liked this. It’s a fantastic show.
And now you have to watch all 17 seasons of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. Plus SG-1's two finale ending movies.
This movie spawned some of the best sci fi TV ever. Stargate SG-1 is 10 delicious seasons. There are spin offs from that show as well.
1000 years? I think Achara forgot that Kurt Russel said closer to 10000 years. Great reaction ladies.
This movie dropped the summer we moved back to the US - I was 13.
Huge Sci-fi and History nerd. Still have a warm spot for this one - if I see it on TV, I leave it on.
Regarding watch order:
Stargate (1994 film)
Stargate SG-1 (1997 series)
Stargate: Infinity (2002 series)
Stargate: Atlantis (2004 series)
Stargate: The Ark of Truth (2008 film)
Stargate: Continuum (2008 film)
Stargate: Universe (2009 series)
Stargate Origins (2018 series)
Both Ark of Truth and Continuum take place after 10 seasons of SG-1, so do not watch it without having seen SG-1. In the above list, you may want to skip Infinity, which is animated. Have fun watching for the next 200+ hours !
This movie spawned a much loved TV series, several in fact. Season one started off a little stiff, but it found its footing, and the effects, acting, and writing definitely got better.
I remember watching this in the theater when it came out. Blew me away.
And the adventure continues in SG-1
Back in the day these special effects were next level.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Glad you both watched it.
A great Kurt Russel film with even less dialogue for him is "Soldier" (1997). Also science fiction, it is well worth a watch and reaction.
Kurt Russell doesn't have a lot of lines in this movie. But in Soldier he spoke only 104 words in the entire movie despite being in 85% of the scenes.
I would love to see Star Trek reactions on this channel. 🖖🖖🏻🖖🏼🖖🏽🖖🏾🖖🏿
Make it so
Nope
Oh Yes.
The perfect duo
This has one of the greatest scores in my book. I go back and forth between this and Independence Day for David Arnold’s best.
Anubis? not now. In the series? Yes!
He was great in Dark Blue
Assuming you mean, Tango & Cash..
Tombstone
how about when he worked for Disney for a few movies about a college student named Dexter Riley: The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969); Now You See Him, Now You Don't (1972); and The Strongest Man in the World (1975).
I would kill to have them react to "Executive Decision."
Daniel jacksons ,uhm, "charackter arc" over the SG! series is something else. Its flooding all back to me, the whole Ra Arc
This spawned a great TV series (2 really), but like many new shows the first season wasn't that great but in 2nd season it gets really good
i'm not sure you noticed in the beginning when they came to reactivate kurt russel. his son had shot himself with his gun. he was sitting in the room holding the gun he was having "extremely unhealthy thoughts" in that scene.
27:45 "Oh shoot, I think he wants your body but not in a good way." 😂
Fun Fact: Stargate used the same egyptology consultant that was later used in the first two Mummy films and it is a reconstruction of ancient Egyptian language based of coptic church in Egypt that preserved it through the times in a spoken form.
You found my favorite movie.
David Arnold made the soundtracks for Independence Day, many James Bond movies, Zoolander and many other films. He also worked with Woody Allen.
A great composer, less famous than others but with Stargate he made a true masterpiece
Oh wow this was a suprise. This is one of my favourite films of all time
So much lore in Stargate SG1. The long story archs are so worth it. And you also have Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe plus the TV Movies
Kurt Russell was a childhood actor for Disney and personal knew Walt Disney and talk to him on a weekly basis!😊
The construction of the takht was commissioned by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century[3] to mark the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh.[4] Due to the damage caused by an earthquake in 1934, the building was rebuilt between 1948 and 1957 for ₹20,00,000.
I am the biggest Kurt Russell fan in the world and have been since he was 11 in Travels of Jamie McPheeters but to have James Spader in the same movie, as well! I was there!!!
I loved this movie as a kid my brother liked it and I would watch it and it watch while I played. Even though I was absolutely terrified of certain parts I still found it really cool.
Now you have to watch StarGate SG1 and StarGate Atlantis Tv series
