- A long review (sorry..) of the awesome, but flawed, TM FN57. Yes, I know I babble a lot in this review, but hopefully yet get the idea - it's a really nice pistol (great performance, nice kick, great gas efficiency, unique, cheap upgrades available like threaded barrels, great host for a suppressor and tac-light ) but it has inherent design flaws that mean Green Gas/Propane should not be used. Even mid-powered Abbey Ultra gas caused a number of problems to occur, something I do not expect of TM pistols - no other gun they make has such problems, luckily. I overcame these issues and now the FN57 is one of my favorites, however I do not recommend it to those who want a low-maintenance, highly durable skirmish gun for use with Propane etc. - for that purpose TMs PX4, 1911s/Hi Capas, P226s etc. are better choices. Still, great pistol, just a shame the design doesn't allow for gases more powerful than 134a/Duster without some work. I should note that most of the issues do not 'break' the gun as such, they just stop it working as well as it should. Throw in a new outer barrel, fix the slide rails to the blowback unit and you will have a durable, reliable pistol.

Thank you for reviewing this replica with some actual depth, too many 13 year old 'reviewers' out there that have nothing to say. This was great, actually confirmed everything that I've learned in 8+ hours of Googling this one - but put together in 30-so-minutes. Great job, thanks!
No problem, I'm glad I was helpful!
''nice too see people actually like to see my reviews''
me: one sec, my heart is just melting real quick
Nice videos bro. If your looking for ideas for another gun to review the new FNX-45 is quite unique and so far I haven't found any English reviews for it with any detail. Keep up the good work.
also... the seam around the gun is realistic, thats how the real 5-7 looks.
I saw one of these yesterday. Wouldnt mind getting one. But after watching your thorough review...i've changed my mind. If I do get one...it'll be a collectible only. I'd love one for skirmishing...but not if it has these issues. Im a BSG fan so its nice to find this, but disappointing as well. Rob.
I have the same problem with the checkered grip being sharp with my kwa mk23. It gets really uncomfortable after a while, but isn't a problem if you wear gloves, which is what the mk23 is made for.
I have a nine ball outer barrel installed so the hop up screw holes warping is no problem for me.
I’m sorry do you know if the threaded barrel for Tokyo marui version is compatible with cybergun fn57 version? Because I read the cybergun is kinda a tank and very reliable
I own the real one, amazing how closely these look the same.
The real gun has seamline too.
Thanks for another great review.I bought one in back in 2010, and sold it in 2011. Inside the box it looked amazing, but upon holding it just felt too plastic and toy like. If held hard enough, the body actually flexed
The real one also feels like that. You feel like you're holding a plastic toy springer.
Great review. I like to really follow the rules regarding longevity so I have only been using 144a gas in the gun which is what tm recommend. Haven’t had any issues although don’t play that much so I will have to keep an eye out. I just dont think you can use anything above 144a due to the way the gun is designed.
I've been playing about 6 games with the pistol on 134a gas. It's going strong after the hundreds of bbs shot with no issue though far. There's been a few misfeeds in the magazine where one bb got stuck in the barrel, but it didn't hurt the pistol alot. Overall it's an awesome to play around it
If I get the barrel, and get the guarder 2019 enhanced slide will it hold to gg?
So I went ahead and did the changes inside (gluing and change the nubs for screws) without having shot one bb ;)
With putting it back together the slide doesn't lock back when I cock it. I have to manually lift the slide release button to the lock position and then move the slide back to keep it locked in the back position. Then the release works normally.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong or what I could check to fix it?
I'm not sure, just to confirm, this is with an empty mag that you tested beforehand? It's the magazine follower that actuates the slide catch, so working on the slide shouldn't affect it.
Can you send the link for the barrel you got please
Look, it is a plastic gun. They have seam lines.
Friend of mine is in our armed forces and they all get issued once. He showed me his and (without a mag and unloaded off course) and it does have seam lines too. But it is well-liked among our guys. It's light, reliable, accurate. Tears through kevlar as it is butter and has a high capacity magazine. Our F16 pilots carry these too in their jet. Strapped to their leg with 3 spare mags.
Why the hate on TM? Are their any real issues? Except from a drilled aluminium hole in the barrel deforming a bit (wich is nitpicking if you ask me..) Metals follow a curve. They might deform a bit without any real damage being done to them
Very informative video! thanks m8!
I'm not hating on TM, I'm a fan of their replicas, but this is a poorly designed gun by their standards. I've seen examples of these where the outer barrels have come clean out the front of the gun, so the deformation around the holes is an issue. The much bigger issue is the way the seperate guide rails are fixed to the blowback housing. The small cast metal protrusions shear off very quickly and the slide will become loose on the gun. I highly recommend just about every other TM GBB, but cannot recommend this one.
sorry for all these comments, but also, you said to fix the slide rails to the blow back unit, I know what you mean, the back rails in the slide kind of "free float" in place.. Is there a way to "fix" them to the blowback unit? I wondered this myself.
tictac4949 Yes, I permanently fixed them on mine by drilling some small holes through the rails and blowback unit, and then threading some grub screws through to hold them together tightly. Simply gluing is not enough to hold them, so a permanent mechanical fix is needed. If your is holding up ok, don't worry too much - although the guns is badly designed, the gun will still function even with the slide rails broken from the BBU. It's possible that your gun is already damaged, like most 57s out there are, but the effects aren't very noticeable. The symptoms are trouble locking back and an increased slide/frame gap. Most owners don't notice, but it's the kind of thing that bothers me. In regard to stronger designs, any newer TM is tougher, like the HK45, M9A1, PX4, and the 1911 series among others. The worst is the FN57 and Glocks.
How do you know which suppressor you should buy for this gun? Thanks!
You think if I just run with duster gas it'll be fine? I'm hesitating on running duster because I don't really like indoor CQB and I plan to run it in a MOUT area, so I'll be engaging with a duster pistol from med to med-short range, and I don't think I'll hit hard nor go very far. If I do get an aluminium outer barrel, is there anything that could prevent damage/prolong longevity in the 5-7? The only reason I'm not getting some other pistol is because this is the only decent 5-7 out there, I've heard bad things about the Marushen 5-7 CO2. Thanks for your inquiry and I hope you reply soon! EDIT: Also, if I do run mid power gas in this can you also inform me of some good brands and also inform me of how to keep the longevity of the pistol without duster.
Duster gas is the same pressure as 134a, so it should be work well, no reinforcement needed. It will shoot a little slower though - probably 250 FPS or so. Since the hop us is so good, range won't be decreased much at all, but the shots will take a bit longer to reach out. It will still out-range a more powerful gun with an inferior hop unit though (like a WE). For durability, the things that need addressing are the barrel, and the blowback unit. The blowback unit is the more concerning area - the slide rails split from the rest of the unit easily. They need to be screwed on by drilling some holes yourself, and forcing grub screws through to hold the parts together (I think I mention this later on in the video). After that, Green Gas/Propane is fine. With duster you shouldn't have any durability problems. As for mid powered, Abbey Ultra is the best, but could still be a little bit powerful for a stock 5-7.
zero one pro gas?! I heard that's really bad lol. Wouldn't you use abbey 144a anyway? because of the slide design with this and the glock 17 from TM?
Nope not bad at all. The old Zero One Green Gas was very bad, but Pro Gas is simply Abbey Ultra with a new label. Very cheap, and perfect for TM Pistols since it's less powerful than green. My FN was strengthened to use any gas is, but yes, out of the box I would only use 144a.
I was torn between this and glock 17. Thank you for being honest and i will have to go with the glock. But im still a bit worried as i want to use abbey ultra with it , but i don't want to break it.
I would say the Glocks are more durable the Fn57, but still not as good as other TMs. Abbey Ultra will be ok in a TM Glock, but in the long run you might want to buy a spare plastic slide, and maybe a Guarder frame. Also, using 144a on raly hot days helps, but we don't get a lot of those in the UK so Abbey Ultra is fine most of the time.
Do you have a link for the threaded barrel?
I guess I'll just have to wait until SRC (hopefully) releases their five-seven...
Also great review :)
Hey there, I was wondering if you could answer a question real quick. If I can't find a way to get the angry gun aluminum outer barrel, how do you think I could solve the issue with he stock outer barrel and the hopup unit? Everything else I can probably just do what you did, and I'm willing to use 134a gas regardless, but I'm just also worried and would like to prevent issues before they happen. Great video by the way.
While I can confirm I ran into the problem with the outer barrel and disassembly switch breaking, I have not yet had the problem with the blowback unit (touch wood). I've skirmished my 5-7 in 21 game days, fired over 5000 rounds through it all on abbey predator and not had that problem. Have I been very lucky with mine?
also, if the 5-7 has a bad internal design, what gun do you think has a good internal design?
The tm hk45 for exemple
So if I glue the side rails to the blow back unit and install grub screws where the notches broke off, would it be safe to use green gas? Or should I still stick to duster?
Yes I think Green Gas would be ok once the slide rails are secured to the blowback housing properly. I still use Abbey Ultra (Mid power) to be safe, but unless it's particularly hot,Green should be ok.
***** I epoxyed it together, and installed grub screws, but now the nozzle isn't returning when I pull it forward.
That's odd, did you install the spring back correctly? How freely does the nozzle move? There could be excess glue stopping it from moving properly or something.
***** I fixed the problem, apparently I might have caved the front of the sides(rails) of the blowback system a bit from drilling each side while It pressed against a flat surface. It took a bit of sanding and prying open but after I did this the nozzle moves freely and the rails are fixed like a rock!
Enrico Cortes I drilled first then epoxyed. Its probably much more convenient to epoxy it first then drill+tap+install grub screws like you did.
By any chance if you heard if they have fixed any of these issues with their newer versions of this gun? I really want one but I don't have the skills or the know how to fix it if it broke.
The gun reviewed is a newer version actually, different trades on the grip, and I don't think it's been updated since this one.
***** That sucks, Good Review by the way! You go into so much detail that others don't do!
Thanks!
***** Could you tell us what Site you Skrimish at?
Ground Zero Airsoft, but I very rarely play anymore
great reivew ! were did you get the threaded outer barrel ?
Ehobby asia!
+ApurtureSci any chance of a link?
shop.ehobbyasia.com/angry-gun-fn5-7-silencer-adaptor-outer-barrel-silver.html
+ApurtureSci I can't find that replacement outer barrel in stock anywhere and after contacting Angry Gun they told me it had been discontinued! Any idea where i might be able to find it in stock or failing that what other replacement threaded outer barrel would you recommend?
Tom Blant Guarder make a similar outer barrel, 10mm threaded tip, but I can't remember if it comes with a 14mm adapter like the Angry Gun one does. Also a bit more pricey.
Can't you just find a little smaller suppressor
can this mag be compatible with the co2 version?
No, the Marushin Co2 version is very different. Co2 would be too powerful in this anyway.
+ApurtureSci ohh ok thanks
Hey AputureSci, I got a tm 5-7 and put on the creation metal internal slide, along with a PDI piston head for the gas chamber, and it works really really well. The kick is very very strong though; people always think I'm using propane. Ive been to multiple CQB games with it using only green gas and it is still holding up very solid. This does kind of scare me though I was going to get a threaded barrel and silencer but if what you say is true, I don't want to put more money into it if its going to break soon :/ hopefully it doesn't though i put a lot of time into cleaning and maintaining it thoroughly before and after every game.
I already upgraded the outer barell and got the guarder slide , do you think that I can use green gas?
It's the blowback unit/slide rails that's the main issue. The Guarder slide (like there other 5-7 parts) is actually weaker than the TM parts, so that won't help. The barrel is a good move, but what you really want to is secure the rails to the BBU. This isn't the easiest thing to do, but will make it green gas safe (unless your slide cracks) The way I did it was to drill holes through the BBU and rails, and thread grub screws through to hold them together.
***** Yhea I saw what you did but I find it very hard to do... I didn't even understand how you got into there to drill the holes for the screws...Also I cannot find screws this small.....my only hope was spare tokyo marui parts which I cannot order from Japan , I am doomed... (Also , since I live in Greece it is almost impossible to find Duster , I tried because I don't mind using it but I could not find the gas...)
Andronikos Lykoudis You can try abbey ultra gas. Its more powerful than duster but less powerful than green gas.
I know use a mix of butane (lighter gas) and green gas an it works just fine , got any ideas where can I get this abbey gas?
Andronikos Lykoudis Yeah i do biatch
The seam line is there on the real one as well.
I did a bit of shooting in Orlando last month, and it seemed that a lot of real guns actually have worse seam/mould lines than the replicas! A lot of people are fussy with seams on their replicas, but after seeing a lot of RS polymer framed guns, they don't bother me at all now.
It's always funny when replicas look better than their real counterparts.
I love your videos by the way, I appreciate how in depth you go, even down to the materials the replicas are made of externally and internally. You're the first RUclipsr I've seen who actually acknowledges possible weak points on the gun, which is always a good thing.
How disappointing. I really want a 5-7, and I was hoping TM would be able to deliver a solidly reliable product.
Well apparently it may depend on the models and gas used. I have one and I've used it for 4 games since I bought it. Still have no issue with it at all. I'm using only predator 144a gas (Ultra Predator during winter). Maybe problem will occur later, who knows... I think it is still the best Five-seveN on the market in terms of performance. Excellent gun for skirmishes, very good gas reserve that makes it playable even in cold weather. My only complaints are about the diamond grips (too sharp), the grip is not very comfortable compared to a Glock or M&P. The magazine release button is also too prominent, thus you can easily lose mags by accident if you are not using rigid holster.
Cool
The thread looks bad it makes it look weird thus gun is my fav pistol though
Splinter cell's gun : )
I really like your videos, but you need to work on your mic location or something. Everytime you rack the slide or shoot or anything, the input from the noise drowns out your voice. So at times it's hard to hear what you are saying. So please work on that.
The problem is that I'm using my phone for these videos, built in mic, which as you say focuses on the gun sounds rather than me sometimes. I am working on it.
***** Oh wow, I wouldn't have thought this was a phone camera. Looks great! I think some companies make external mics for phones.
Haha thanks, it has a surprisingly good little camera (Samsung S4) - I will try and find a mic for it.
***** I have the same phone, and it takes great video.
is it metal?
The real FN57 isn't metal, so a metal replica wouldn't make sense. This (like all TMs) is polymer like the real thing.
cool thanks!
134a it is then :D
Becoming very nervous of how this guys turns te weapon around......jekke, jekke, jekke and still saying nothing.....
The real five seven does not have a plastic slide
The outer slide is plastic, like most of the externals on the Five seveN. It does have metal inner slide, just like how most plastic framed pistols have a metal inner chassis.
Haha first view ;)
